Business and Pleasure shouldn’t mix.

Yet, that’s exactly what I’m contemplating after Seattle’s most eligible bachelor strolled into the diner where I work and made me an offer I’m having a hard time refusing.

Beckett Anderson has the looks and money to get the attention of any woman, and yet he wants me to be the one at his beck and call. If I accept I’m to be his assistant in and out of the boardroom. In exchange, I’d finally have a chance to use my college degree and escape the cycle of poverty I’ve known my entire life.

He wants my mind and my body, but can I keep my heart out of it? Because if I can’t, instead of saving me, he might be what finally breaks me.

DNF @ 13% - premise is silly - the heroine refusing help with finding a decent job from her friends isn’t admirable… this is called “networking” and it’s the completely legitimate way many people obtain jobs… and the hero’s proposal is beyond ridiculous and makes no sense. It’s like the author wanted it to be taboo while also making him a good guy. Its not working for me.

This book is good, but it is an emotional roller coaster. Beckett is a man who believes he doesn’t deserve the love of a good woman, and Evie is a good woman who has suffered from tragedy in her young life. There are so many twists and turns to this story, and sometimes you feel like grabbing Beckett and shaking him. So grab a copy, and hold on for the ride, I think you will enjoy it.

Beck and Call by Kimberly Carrillo is the story of Beckett Anderson and Evie Holmes.
Evie is alone in the world and has been struggling to make it money wise. This has put her working in a field that not what she wants but it helps her to get by. Evie because of her loss has set on a path to independence and to guard her feelings. Beckett by all appearances has it all but deep inside he is missing an important ingredient in his life. Beckett is very guarded with control issues that are not going to go away. When Evie and Beckett life both collide they end up finding something they both need. This was a page turning read for me. I hope to read more from this author soon.

Oh HOLY HOTNESS BATMAN....Beckett completely stole my heart. Like hook line and sinker, stole my heart. This is the first book I have read by this author but I can tell you it absolutely won't be my last. I was hooked from page one and just couldn't put it down. Both Beckett and Evie have wormed their way into my heart but they are stuck in my head too. I'll be the first to say my favorite go to genre is normally romantic suspense with lots of suspense even though it makes my brain hurt. However, sometimes I just want a book that is far from that and this is it. This book is one that will stay with me long after I have finished reading it. There were a couple things thrown in that I didn't expect for sure. Sometimes authors throw in things that are unexpected and it ends up feeling like an after thought but this one was the exact opposite of that. Everything in this book felt very thought out and not an after thought at all. I can not wait for the next book. This is an author that I will be watching aka stalking to make sure I don't miss anything.

First off, thank you Kimberly for getting an ARC to me!

This love story is about Evie and Beckett....
After losing all of her family, Evie is left alone, with nobody to care for her or help her through the toughness that the world holds for a young girl in her early twenties. She's struggling to make ends meet and living in a closet of an apartment. Her college degree sitting uselessly to the side while she waits tables at a local diner.
Beckett is a control freak and an all powerful, multi-billion-dollar businessman. By the looks of it, from the outside, it looks like he has it all. When in reality.... there's still something missing in his life....someone to share everything with. With a dark past and a lot of trust issues - will he even be able to let someone in?
A chance encounter and an impromptu business proposal could be the solution they are both looking for. But can they both get away from their pasts to let the other in?

This is my first book of Kimberly's and i've gotta say - I am so, so happy with it! I love my romance and this book definitely had that! Evie had a hard life growing up, with all the tragedies that seemed to follow her. It was like she couldn't catch a break with anything! Beckett also has a dark past, one i will not mention so there are no spoilers here, but let's just say - it left him with a really sad and hard time to let anyone break the barricade he had spent a long time building up. The two of them are so broken but need each other to help tend to the wounds that are still there no matter how hard they try to push them aside. Beckett is so swoon worthy! He may not try to be since he doesn't want to let anyone get too close and claims to not be romantic - but c'mon.... if he didn't want to be romantic then he shouldn't have been so damn romantic and charming!

The two go through a lot of struggles through this book. There is a lot of heartache and hidden secrets that can't seem to stay hidden in closets for too long. Misconceptions are made in the heat of moments and thrilling but scary surprises are made. And then there's the love. You can't have a love story without the love. It was so well written and I really enjoyed the sub-main characters as well. The two friends Evie makes since her move and then Beckett's best friend and business partner, Colter, who i think needs his own damn story because after reading this book you KNOW that there is more that needs to be said about him! Either to do with his past, or his future, his story needs to be told! There's too much there! I need more answers when it comes to him! Please!!

4 star review here! Hands down! Great love story to give a read. I didn't put it down at all today. The outside world ceased to exist for me lol

3 Stars 2020
Honestly the first part was good, and I actually thought I might move it to a 4 stars… that is until I found out MMC loved another woman before and he’s still hung up on her! How the hell this got a 3 stars out of me, I don’t know. I’m 63% in and he hasn’t even told the FMC about her!! Worst he compared everything he felt for FMC to how he felt about OW because it was the same feeling. Just no.

This book was just.. ok. It was very predictable and moved very quickly, I felt like everything happened so fast. I liked Evie and her story line, but the whole story line between her and Beck just didn't sit right with me, and as I've said it moved far too quickly for my liking. It also had quite a few grammar mistakes which isn't an issue I suppose but it's still frustrating when you're reading a book. This books needs some serious editing.

This was fun. The insta-love drags it down, all of it's unrealistic, even absurd at points, and sometimes the characters don't talk or behave like real people. But I still had a fun time reading the silliness. Honestly, most of these stars I'm giving to the crazy twist, I couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous it was and how it made the best friend act afterward. Just suspend all disbelief about reality and you'll probably have a good time reading.

Dnf. The way it’s written, it feels like a cheap imitation of the J/P story you’d want to read. Also he was fully attached to ow. One time even loved her. More than he was capable of loving anyone else. That’s a no from me. Ew

Trigger Warnings include:
overdose, discussions of depression, bipolar disorder, and misdiagnosis

Evie is just trying to stay afloat, barely making it. Then a random stranger walks in on a random Thursday and the life she knew suddenly changes. He’s full of opportunity and promises. Evie had a great first impression of Beckett Anderson. That man is BOSSY. But neither of us minded. Beck offers her the chance of a new job, well, two actually. He’s in need of an assistant, for all of his needs. That man had me swooning from the start. His need to take care of her, spoil her. Prove to her that she’s worthy of it. He’s not ready for the force that is Evie Holmes. He also wasn’t prepared for how stubborn she is. Beck was so lost in his head, and it wasn’t taking a toll on just him anymore. You could tell how badly he wanted to open up to Evie, how scared the whole thing made him. They both wanted to go full speed and at a snail’s pace at the same time. By 50% this felt like a five star. It felt comfortable, and yet pleasantly unexpected and exciting in all the right ways. Then by 60% there were thousands of reasons to grovel and I was worried about those five stars. Everything that felt easy and safe suddenly became chaotic and heartbreaking. By 70% I was very concerned. Do I like Beckett less? Or Evie? Which side do I take? Because to be honest, I didn’t want to take either side. Can I just lock them in a soundproof room and remove all sharp objects? A plot twist has never made me want to become so violent before! But thankfully, the twist had an instant happiness because I’m not sure how I would have felt otherwise. (And in full disclosure, I was teetering on the DNF line after I was ready to hand out five stars right out of the gate!) Everything seemed to fall right back into a comfortable place. That moment of panic definitely felt worth it, for them. But it nearly took me out of it. And I think I enjoyed it a little less.

My Favorite Quotes:
• “I'm going to break all of the rules I've ever lived by to have you, even for just a while."
• “You're remarkable, just let me help make it easier."
• “Say you're mine." "I'm yours." "Yes, you are."
• “I like seeing you in nice things. You haven't been spoiled nearly enough, and it brings me pleasure to be the one to do it."
• “This is everything I'm capable of."
• “I'll take care of you. Just give in to me."
• “You undo me."
• “You make me want more from life."
• “I plan on keeping every promise I make you."
• “I want to give you everything, even the moon if you want it."
• “I think your existence is my salvation.”

Quite a good read

I actually preordered this book at the beginning of February and was very excited when I was able to get last Friday.

I love both Evie and Beckett Anderson so much. I was able to connect with both characters on so many different levels.

Kimberly Carrillo did such an excellent job of telling Beckett and Evie's story as well.

I highly recommend you get this book ASAP

It was a fun read! I loved the strength of the main character. I loved following her inner dialogue as you wade through all of emotions and learn about her past. I enjoyed learning about the side characters, but the insta love wasn’t for me. If you enjoy insta love, brooding billionaire man, and a fiesty main character then I think you will enjoy this! Definitely gives 50 shades of grey vibes, and there is some good spice!! This is also an age gap which I do love! I had trouble buying into the attraction and the organic creation of their relationship, but that is because I don’t enjoy insta love, not because I don’t think it was well done!

Disappointed

I've read plenty of billionaire/waitress improbable love stories to understand the trope, sadly, this one was hard to finish. Neither main character grabbed my heart, and their instalust/love story made very little sense. Yeah, it's a trope, but a reader needs some logic to relate to, this book had very little. The writing was choppy, needed some serious proofreading and an honest beta reader to catch the multiple WTF moments. I only wish I'd simply borrowed the book and not spent money on it.

I made it to 35% (Ch 10 of 26).

The characters and the story have potential, but the writing is just so painfully obvious and awkward. It all feels like: "I am rich, she is poor, I will have an age-gap romance with her and be her boss." "He is hot and cold, why is that?" This needed more editing to smooth out all the rough edges and make the dialogue more natural and the descriptions more a part of the story as opposed to being very obtrusive.

This book was a stupid train wreck and the only reason I didn’t DNF was because I had to see what happened. The only good thing about this book is the plot twist but even the way it was handled afterwards was stupid.

I'd give this book 2.5 stars, it was mostly okay with parts that I liked and it did have a lot of potential. The thing I liked most about this book was probably the heroine. She had a tough life and was struggling to make ends meet in an expensive city and trying to find a job where she could actually use her degree. I really like the moments where she didn't take shit from the hero and she stood up for herself, whilst I do feel like she gave in a little too quickly to him at times I also never felt like she was a doormat. There's one moment where she finds out the hero has moved her out of her apartment and into his place behind her back and rather than give in she just texts her friend to see if she can crash there.

I also liked her friendship with this friend of hers, at first I thought the friend would be the stereotypical rich party girl who's the complete opposite of the heroine and utterly annoying up I'm glad to see it's not the case. She has her friends back and put her first rather than the guy and when the heroine announces the engagement she tells her she doesn't have to do this she can live with her and give her a job, rather than jumping up and down that her friend got a man timeframe be damned.

The hero is one of the things that dragged this book down for me. I do like that he wasn't 100% the usual older billionaire type we get like Christian Grey (fuck that guy) and he did feel real. He showed vulnerability and showed that despite having everything he was lonely and really wanted to be seen and wanted companionship. His reason for keeping the heroine at arms length and the reason for his hot and cold behaviour however weren't something I could buy. He's been cheated on by at least two women so his trust issues I can understand but the main reason is that he broke up with high school girlfriend who he had a toxic relationship with and she then went and attempted suicide and is now living full time at a care facility. He feels guilty that he pushed her over the edge despite the fact she had bipolar that they hadn't discovered yet. My issue with this is that it was 20 years ago and seeing a 38 year old man hold onto teenage logic and not doing anything to move past it or help himself was just too much for me.

The relationship between the hero and heroine didn't do it for me and it was mostly because of the hero's back and forth and hot and cold attitude. I also feel like these two agreed their relationship would be professional with exclusive sex but weren't really all that clear on their deal, which is why there was so many question marks from each side about where they stand. Then there's an engagement thrown in with a deadline and their own past baggage and their developing feelings and the hero's misplaced guilt, and it's just a complete cluster fuck and I got tired of reading it.

There's also the fact that the blurb mentions two pink lines which tells us that this arrangement they have is going to get thrown of course when they find out the heroine is pregnant. However this doesn't happen until 70% into the book. I don't know about most people but the stuff I read in the blurb is meant to be basic set up to me, once the book has caught up to all the information in the blurb then I feel like the story has kicked off and started. So I spent a lot of this book wondering when this story was going to properly start.

I thought this book would be something more along the lines of two people who are in different places in their lives but both are lonely and want companionship but don't feel like they can give their hearts. So they have a relationship/marriage of convenience of sorts and have a decent friendship and it's going well until the pregnancy that knocks them of balance and control. Then the book explores how they handle this and falling in love with each other and opening up after they've been hurt.

Overall I thought this book was okay but towards the end I'd had enough with the hero's issues which meant I lost any investment I had in their relationship. My heart broke for Colter though and I thought he was such a great guy and I actually cried for him and all that he's missed.

Move out of the way Christian, Hudson and Gideon!! Beckett is here to steal our hearts!!

I'm going to be completely honest here - Kim and I became friends after we met on another author's Facebook group and I didn't even know she was an author!! I heard about Beck and Call's release and was able to grab an ARC thanks to Booksprout!

It's so awkward sometimes to read your friend's books because there's always the possibility that you wouldn't like the book and then you have to either lie to keep the friendship or you should be honest and break their hearts!

Kimberly thank you for saving me from all that anxiety. When I read that part about the newspaper in Chapter One, I just knew I was going to love this book! And about 10 hours later I can call Kimberly Carrillo one of my favorite authors. She's been upgraded from awesome Facebook friend.

But please don't think because we're friends, I'm giving her a great review! She earned those 5 stars!!

So why am I practically begging/forcing you (yes, you! The one reading this review and not knowing if you should buy the book or not!) to read this book? Well let me tell you this - I pretended to be sick yesterday so I could stay in bed and read all day! I finished after 1AM and now I have a book hangover. But was it worth it? Totally!

I can't really find the right words to describe this book! There is a few things that's so predictable but I think that's just a ploy to make you feel comfortable and think: "I already know what's going to happen" and then BAM! Kim hits you with something you would never expect to happen. It happened more than once.

That characters are so relatable but not cliche at all. Evie doesn't take anyone's nonsense and she walked out on Beckett more than once when he pissed her off. She's not taking any crap! Beckett wants to control everything but he's also insecure and scared of loving someone! Best friend Colter is loyal but he doesn't take Beck's crap either. Jana I totally love (and I'm so happy she's going to be in the second book as well!) She's so witty and snarky and I wish she could be my best friend!! Even Beck's mom is hilarious when she discovers what her son did! It's my goal in life to be like her when I'm old and retired!

Just click that button and buy the damn book! You will not be disappointed! Kim has a brilliant mind and I am so in awe that she was able to come up with this amazing plot!

Beck and Call is definitely one of my top 10 favorite books only because of Kim's ability to create the perfect set up to reveal one of the biggest plot twists ever written! When she hinted at *spoiler* I thought nah it can't be! It's too much of a coincidence! They will never be able to put 2 and 2 together and realize that *spoiler*!

What I appreciated as well was the fact that Evie and Beck didn't just jump each other in chapter one. I hate when that happens! They sexual tension had to build up first. In a previous book I read it irritated me that the characters fell in love right away but that was because that book was so unrealistic.

In Beck and Call everything happened so fast but it made total sense and if it happened in real life you would be like... I can totally see that happening!

Let me stop going on and on about this book! Just go buy it already! Mark my words - this is one of those rare gems that will have its own cult following when one friend tells another friend TO JUST READ THE DAMN BOOK!

Imagine being completely on your own. No Family to depend on anywhere in the world. The last person who loved you died 6 years ago and, in that time, you have picked yourself up, graduated from college and moved across the country without a job or family to help you. Evie does all of this. While the bad seems to be winning she hasn’t given up hope. Not quite an eternal optimist so much as an idolizer. She knows that something better is out there than her diner job and teeny apartment. Evie Holmes isn’t afraid of hard work and doesn’t shy away from the possibility of failure. The character of Evie is real and relatable. We all have bad times, but you just keep putting one step in front of the other and keep hoping for the best.

Then enters Beckett Anderson. He is a control freak who even though his life is full of family and friends his past is dictating how he handles relationships. Beckett (Beck) is attracted to Evie the moment he walks into the diner where she works.

A chance encounter and an impromptu business proposal could be the solution for both.

I loved the push and pull of this book. I liked that Beckett had a hard time letting go of his past to allow himself to have a future with Evie. There are moments in the story where you wonder what trope will come next, but every trope works in this book and makes it an amazing read. I started this book and could not put it down. It was sexy but not over the top. A modern-day retelling of Cinderella with just enough of a twist for you to realize the uniqueness of the story. This was not your typical CEO sweeping the down on her luck orphaned waitress off her feet, love at first sight novel. Instead you get amazing character development and a authentic storyline. This was a first time reading Kimberly Carrillo for me and I will totally be going back and reading everything I can in her catalogue

The couple: Beckett and Evie

Romance genre: contemporary
Series: Business and Pleasure
Length: 258 pages

Plot: Evie is a down on her luck waitress who just happens to wait on Beckett, a businessman who is not at all down on his luck. He hires her to be his assistant with the expectation that she will also be his companion. He seems to run hot and cold though; he's a man of mystery and he doesn't intend to change that. Evie isn't really on board with a half-relationship though, even though she thought she could be what he needed. In the end, it turns out that what Beck needs is a swift kick in the butt to make him see what he has before he loses it.

Commentary: This story was okay, but for me, I was a little let down when it devolved into a sort of CW-esque soap opera. We have . I definitely don't need my fiction to be realistic. But I'm not really big on New Adult kind of drama (especially when it seems like it's coming from people well out of that age range, which Beck and his best friend were). I liked the idea of the story, but it was a bit back and forth for me. And he was kind of a jerk for most of the book and it all came down to unreasonable guilt for something that he should have gotten therapy for, no lie.

Shoutout to lampshading the Christian Grey comparisons:
"Are you going to punish me if I don't?" He nipped my ear. "I think you'd like that too much, but no. Causing you pain isn't something I'm comfortable with. I'd rather bring you pleasure."

So many feels

I was recently introduced to a new to me author, Kimberly Carrillo. I needed a minute before I wrote about this book, because it touched on a topic very close to my heart. In this book, a side character is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Only her situation did not turn out the same. For the last 5 years, my daughter has been on the similar path, but with more positive results. This book was enlightening on how easy it is to miss signs of mental health distress. We read to escape, but also we can learn a great deal & maybe even save a life.

Although this deals with heavier topics, you will have all the feels by the end. And yes, the next book will be centered around the side characters you will grow to love by the end of this book.

Damaged hero, Beckett. He's afraid to love, But!
He's very JP over the heroine, Evie
Beckett runs hot & cold with her, he shuts down when he starts to feel things.
Evie, all she wants is love and family.

Office romance/she's his Executive Assistant
Insta-lust
Age Gap
Family Drama
Bulldozes into her life, buying her clothes, moving her out of her apartment (because it's not safe enough).
Accusation of cheating, but doesn't happen
A twist!

By the end, you will feel everything and I mean that in a good way. There are new beginnings, a lot of healing, forgiveness, sadness, some fun banter. Highly recommend.

Beck and Call is only the 2nd book by Kimberly Carrillo apparently, which makes her a new to me author, but that tag is no longer true, as I'm going to devour any & all that she releases from here on out to be honest. It didn't take anytime for me to fall in love with this story of Evie, a girl in her early twenties, who is truly alone since all of her family is gone. She's barely making life work as she's broke while living in basically a closet masquerading as an apartment. Unfortunately, she's working in a diner while her college degree sits around collecting dust, and I wanted to hug her so badly. Beckett is a rich, powerful control freak, who has it all. Or is everything as it seems?! Beckett feels there's something missing, and that's his person (still not named). Fate steps in allowing these two to cross paths, and a new journey is on the horizon. And that's all that I'm saying about that. See, this story was so good that I don't even want to give all my emotions away because I don't want to take away from the wonder that readers will feel! So hit that one click button to find out how it happened, what's happening now, and how it will all pan out! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

This is Evie and Beckett's story. Evie has had a rough life growing up and everyone she has ever loved has left her. Beckett has a past secret that has stunted his life since high school and has left his unable to give himself romantically to anyone. When Beckett see's Evie, something pulls him to her. Evie has been struggling to find a job in her field and Beckett wants to offer her a job as well as a relationship with her. Becket is many things, Controlling, insecure, jealous and wants what he wants when he wants it, but will never give anyone his heart again. Evie is a strong woman even with all she has gone through and will not take his games of push and pull away from her. This story is an emotional one and make sure you have some tissues as it will have you weeping. This story deals with some hard issues but it is well written in the discussions involving these issues. I absolutely loved this book and so many secrets finally came to light. When Beckett is pushed to deal with his issues he struggles, and we see how emotionally drained he really is. Evie is the strength he needs and the two of them complement each other is so many ways. I am super excited for the next book.
I was given this book as an ARC for my honest review.

I really enjoyed reading Beck and Call! This is my first book by the author, but thought that the story was well laid out with some pretty cool bombs dropped in there! I will say that it took me a couple of chapters to really relate to the characters, but once I did, I was in deep!

When you have two people that are extremely independent and not looking for anything serious, of course there will be some head butting. These two both have had hard times and not an easy go of it. When Beckett offers Evie a chance to better herself, she would be a fool not to take it. What she wasn't expecting was to connect with this alpha man!

All in all, the book had a great plot and I liked how things played out. I wish I was able to connect to the characters faster, but that could just be my own weirdo self coming into play! If you are looking for a book that shows compromise and surprises, I recommend you check it out- 4 stars from me!

PS: Thank you to Kimberly Carrillo and Give Me Books PR for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!

This is the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last. I could not put Beck and Call down at all. And I so wanted more when it was over. Evie has been through so much in her life, but she's always trying to stay positive and move forward. She's looking for a job that she has her degree in and trying to stay afloat. I loved her down-to-earth personality and that her best friend is rich but totally down to earth. Beckett is kind of a jerk but totally hot and sexy. He has many issues which you will find out what really happened to him. One thing I like though was that he tried not to give up. When he approaches Evie with a job and the opportunity to be with him, he prays that she understands why he can't be more. These two will go through all the emotions but in the end, can they be together or will Beckett's past tear them apart. And Evie will get some life-altering news how will she handle that? Oh just love the whole story.

Loved Beck and Evie!!!!

If I could, I would rate this as 4.5 ****I really enjoyed reading this. This is a Billionaire insta-love storyline but differs from many I have read before. Beck starts off as a true alpha controlling rich guy who knows what he wants and what he doesn’t want is true love. As the story progresses, you see why this is the case and how he has been burned in the past and you can truly emphasize with. The storyline continued to evolve and there were a couple of turns to it that were unexpected and brought even more forward in this world. I loved the integration of the supporting characters as well. I loved Evie and Beck’s relationship but felt it could have been developed more. This and some of their steamy scenes faded to black is why I didn’t give it a full 5 stars.

This is a new author to me and I can’t wait to read more from her!!! I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
