I met this author a decade ago at a workshop in Prescott where he teaches, and was impressed with his deep respect for and knowledge about the landscape we were studying. Singing Stone takes you right into the heart of canyon country, so that you can hear the heat pulsating from the rocks and feel the cool sand between your toes. If you are stuck in urban or suburban life, Fleischner can take you into the wilderness with his fluid and perspicacious writing.

This starts out with rock formations, then animal and plant species, then early civilizations, and finally a current description of Escalante Canyon in Southern Utah. Beautiful language and many interesting personal stories from the author, who is a professor.
