The woods around Weaversmoor hide a secret. The very town, sleepy and placid as it seems, hides secrets, only allowing inside it those who know, those whose blood runs with the same magic that ignites the trees around it. Into the town comes Nyx Vaughn, to live with her uncle Spencer in the same house where her mother once grew up, to attend the same school, learn the same craft. And unravel the secrets that lie behind her forced estrangement from her own grandmother, secrets that could place both her and Spencer in danger, as well as the entire town. Into Weaversmoor, he comes too, on the back of his bike - a man with a mission and his own secrets to find, intent on opening the doorways that lead him back to what once was his life. But these doorways have long been shut, locked behind veils of unbreakable magic, and tearing them apart can only mean one thing. Death must follow.

Witch Craft is book one in Ruth Miranda’s Mythos Trilogy. Young Nyx Vaughn has lost her dad, and has not seen her mom in ages; she has returned to the family town of Weaversmoor to live with her Uncle Spencer, in the very house her mom grew up in. She is attending the town’s unadvertised but highly rated academy for teens coming into their magical powers. Her mom, Erin, went to this school too. We know right off this in not your average town. Her family comes with many secrets, many that Nyx herself does not know the answer to: like why her mom really left. These secrets, which includes her estrangement from her own grandmother, come with danger; danger for her, her uncle and the whole town. These dangers could even spread into the larger world.
Then a young man arrives on his bike, Eli. He has lived in two worlds, our and the mysterious Ephemera. Who is he really? But he definitely has a right to live with Nyx and Spencer. That is my only clue. He is intriguing and mysterious and older than Nyx, a young man in his mid-twenties. He is on a mission that unfolds with growing intensity as the book progresses. It is a mission that addresses but complicates the danger: the danger that they all are threatened with.
The characters are wonderful, flawed and relatable in this story of magic and mystery. Another world awaits and beckons to the characters and to us. Nyx is strong and independent and Uncle Spencer is so loveable. I adore him. He has known tragedy and loss and the love of his life is a man, Max Everley, who is married to another, Cressida, also an important supporting character in this tale, a woman who knows more than she will always say. Her daughter, Bryn, is a teen with a huge personality, rebellious and in many ways beyond her years. As Eli adjusts to his new home, he is torn between two women, Bryn, who is really too young for him and Jacintha Tate, one of Nyx’s teachers at the academy. Ms. Tate seems to be a mystery to herself. She doesn’t seem to really remember where she came from. And then there is Pip, so unique, quirky and open-minded. He loves someone for who they are, not their sex. And love Nyx he does. And do expect some tragedy.
Witch Craft ends with a true cliff hanger and an invitation to read book two, in the Mythos Trilogy, in which you will enter the world of Ephemera. This tale is passionate and original. The feelings of the characters are intense. It is a tale with big secrets, a layered plot and great characters.
I really enjoyed the world building and the magic. The multiple POVs were confusing at first but then I got used to it. I'm bummed it ended on a cliff, and I don't see anything about book 2. I need to know what everyone's fate.
