I received a free electronic ARC of this novel from BookSirens, Angelica Markus, and Amazon, Publisher. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read Angeline of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. This was a touching tale, told well. I am pleased to recommend Angelica Markus to my friends and family.

It's 1928 and despite the tagline of The Roaring Twenties, it is still alcohol-free in America, even in downtown New York City. This is Angeline's story, but it revolves around her relationship with actor/producer James Howard and bad-boy Luke Cartwell.

Angeline Moretti really wants a shot at a role based on the script handed to her by James Howard. She can't sing in public, but the cameras don't inhibit her at all and she has some experience. It is a role she will win. She tries very hard to ace the rehearsals, to make no waves on the set, and ignore the growing battles between the other female actors in an attempt to draw James Howard's notice. Angeline does pretty well staying out of the limelight, but her mother is enamored with the idea of a match between her daughter and the well-known actor. James is troubled by his relationship with his father. A rocky relationship with their parents is their first found common ground. It won't be the last.

But Angeline has a growing relationship with Luke Cartwell, the owner of Wonderland, a highly illegal and very popular speakeasy. Not only does she feel affection for Luke, but she is also comfortable enough to sing while there in Wonderland, and public exposure has always been a big problem for her despite her excellent voice. But Luke is under the thumb of his liquor provider, gangster Clay Harvey. And Clay Howard is a very scary man. Maybe even scarier than Angeline's Mother.

This book was such a fun yet heartbreaking story of a young girl in the 1920s who has big aspirations and a lively personality.

Without giving too much away, the main character Angeline is desperate to live life to the fullest whilst she can, even if it means leading two lives.

She meets two men from two different backgrounds which I liked, though they don't meet until near the end, I enjoyed seeing how Angeline's life could have gone differently depending on who she ends up with.

The book is short but fast paced. The plot twist near the end was a shock, but only because throughout the book it's misleading, which is clever but also it could have been stated earlier and would still have the same emotional impact on the readers.

The ending isn't necessarily happy, but it packs a punch and for once I didn't mind the lack of HEA. Overall, this is a great historical fiction that's short and lavish, full of theatre and speakeasy settings!

A historical fiction story taking place during the prohibition era. The drama brings the plot and characters into focus. I wanted the main character to succeed in what she wanted to accomplish. Let’s throw in some distractions along the way. I like this era, the music and movies of this time. The author takes the reader into this era through her writing.

Wow... This book took a turn I never expected! I loved this, although I bawled like a baby while reading it. This was not your typical love triangle and kept me wanting to read more. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you so much for taking me into one of my favorite eras!

I could picture myself in the shoes of the characters for the most part. I love that books can make see the characters exactly as WE imagine them to be.

Wishing I was in a speakeasy wearing a flapper dress ❤️

A great short read!

Thank you to BookSirens and the authors for an ARC of this book. These opinions are my own.

The idea of the book, I loved. The writing, not so much. I found the dialogue to be rather cheesy and like a soap opera. The writing also switched from one character's perspective to the next, sometimes in the same sentence, so it was hard to follow at times.

I think the plot was interesting and there was a twist, which I always love. Being such a short book, I can't say it was a waste of time, I just wish the execution could have been better.
