Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book; this is my freely given opinion. This book is a romantic spy novel that is set in the late Victorian era. Kat was trained as an agent of the Queen by her beloved uncle. The first few chapters of the book really grabbed my attention as Kat is hunting for the killer of her uncle and meets the Earl of Westwood who is also an agent of the Queen and is looking for his wife's killer. The plot is twisting, and I only guessed part of it. The romance was not quit as fleshed out as I would have liked, and I didn't feel invested in the romantic relationship till the end. Kat is a strong character more along the lines of a female James Bond (without the gadgets). I rate the book 3.5*
I had so much fun writing Kat and Marcus's story!! I particularly loved writing about Kat, who is such a wonderfully unconventional character - she throws daggers, not dinner parties!
That might seem odd for a lady in 1885 England, but Kat had an extremely unusual upbringing after the death of her parents when she was three, when her uncle (who was a spy for her Majesty) took over her guardianship and trained her to protect herself as her parents weren't able to. He taught her how to handle weapons and firearms, trained her in Eastern fighting techniques, and all manner of subterfuge and disguises ever since she was a child... in short, he trained her to be a weapon.
And boy is she awesome!! Kat calls a spade a spade, cares little for the constraints of Society, is bold, fearless, and fiercely loyal to those she loves (even though she is determined to never fall in love and marry). She certainly keeps the hero of the story, Marcus, on his toes as they both chase after an assassin known only as the Chameleon!
Kat wants revenge for her uncle's death, whereas Marcus is after justice in his effort to restore his late brother's honor. But they can't have both... and when attraction and their hearts start getting in the way, things become complicated in more ways than one!!
I really do hope you enjoy reading Kat and Marcus's story, as much as I thoroughly enjoyed writing it!
This story is witty, filled with action and the most beautiful romance add in the excitement of spies and danger and getting to know Kat and Marcus was the best this is a must read story in this series, I thought the first one was fantastic this one tops it, neither Marcus of Kat were looking for love and a HEA but love found them in the most thrilling way, I do hope that you come along and enjoy their story as much as I did.
Lady Kaitlyn Montrose has been trained to look out for herself, she knows how to use a dagger and fight like the best of them, but when her beloved uncle is murdered by the assassin the Chameleon, Kat is out for revenge and nothing is going to stand in her way. This brings her in contact with Marcus Black the Earl of Westwood, they are both searching for the same person and the same item, when they meet the sparks fly in all directions.
Marcus Black has been searching for the chameleon since his wife was found murdered in her bed and Marcus needs to stop him, meeting up with Kat again was a shock and when they agree to work together to catch the chameleon things are going to be hard as Marcus is determined to keep Kat safe but this woman is bold and feisty and stubborn beyond belief but they gel together so well can he protect his heart and not fall in love.
Working together in such a dangerous situation just seems to make the attraction stronger between them and with the secrets that they are uncovering and the thought of a traitor in the war office makes things even more dangerous, but ignoring the pull between them is not easy and maybe an affair will help, or maybe not. I loved this story so much from start to finish, Marcus and Kat are made for each other, they made me smile with their witty banter and I loved the strength and courage that is shown by Kat and the way Marcus coped with his stubborn beautiful woman. This is a must read story filled with so much excitement, it was a thrilling, exhilarating story with the best romance, thank you MS Michaels for another brilliant story I can’t wait for the next one.

Barbara’s rating: 4 of 5 Stars Series: Secrets, Scandals, and Spies #2 Publication Date: 2/14/22 Period: Victorian London Number of Pages: 397
Goodness! We have a story filled with spies, murderers, assassins, traitors, Ninjas, and so many twists and turns your head will be spinning. There are definitely no dull or draggy spots in this book – especially with all of the plots within plots. I loved Marcus Black; I liked (but didn’t love) Lady Kaitlyn Montrose; and I enjoyed the feuding between Lucas Devereux, the Marquis of Cantfield, and Henrietta (Etta) Merriweather who I assume will be the leads in the next book.
Lady Kaitlin Montrose certainly had an unusual upbringing and family history. She lost both parents at the age of three, but we never really learn what caused the deaths. I ASSUME they were somehow killed as part of working for the Crown, but it was not spelled out – they could have died from the flu for all I could tell. At any rate, upon their deaths, her uncle Victor became the new earl and her guardian. Victor was determined that Kat would be able to defend herself as her parents could not and instituted a rigorous daily training schedule that left little time for anything else in her life. She became skilled at knife fighting, knife throwing, shooting, and eastern martial arts – she IS a weapon. When Victor was murdered, she also became a woman on a mission of revenge. Victor had been tracking down the Chameleon, an assassin who has taken countless lives over the years. Kat is sure the Chameleon is the one who murdered Victor and she will do anything to bring them to justice. Kat’s version of justice is her putting a bullet squarely through the center of the Chameleon’s forehead.
Marcus Black, the Earl of Westwood is a much-respected earl – and agent for the Crown. He is deadly and fully determined to avenge his brother’s death. Marcus knows the Chameleon planted evidence to brand Nathaniel as a traitor and then cause his death. The Chameleon has hit too close to home too many times – first, with Marcus’s wife, then his brother, and then his mentor Victor. No, Marcus will deliver justice to the Chameleon. Marcus’s version of justice is to catch the Chameleon and then let the justice system take care of the punishment. Mmmmmm – I think I see a major conflict there. 😊
Both Marcus and Kat choose the same night (and time) to break into the Viscount of Somerville’s residence to retrieve a diary that belonged to Marcus’s dead wife, Elizabeth. That, of course, leads to an altercation between the two of them and Kat wins when she knees Marcus in the nether regions. Later, Kat realizes that they should work together since they are after the same thing. Can Marcus agree to that?
Marcus comes to learn many surprising things about Kat, yet he still feels protective of her. She hates that protectiveness and goes way, way, way out of her way to show him that she is better than he is, that she is smarter than he is, that she is more determined than he is, etc. That is the reason this is a 4-star review rather than a 5-star review. Kat is much better than most I’ve read lately, but it seems that in order for a female to be strong, intelligent, shrewd, bold, fearless, etc. she must also be a shrew and show men up at every opportunity. Why is that the perception and the way they are written? What happened to a true partnership? Why can’t Markus be protective of Kat – AND – Kat be equally protective of Marcus? Don’t get me wrong – I am fully for a strong, intelligent female – I am one – but I don’t think my strength should be at the expense of my male counterpart. I’m sure most of you won’t agree with my perception of Kat, but still, it is my opinion.
I can definitely recommend this book as an excellent read with a wonderful mystery within a mystery. It is non-stop excitement and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book; this is my freely given opinion.
This second book to the series appealed to my intrigue, spy story-Mission Impossible-James Bond loving side. Lady Kat was a great character, taught by her mentor and patriarchal figure, Victor, since the age of 4 in various skills including hand to hand combat, knife throwing, and guns. In other words, she is a total Nikita-esque BADASS. Remember, she pulled a knife on the Bastard of Baker Street in the first book, to ensure that he knew that she was looking out for her friend Livie. Not many people are able to do that.
Alternately though, there is a more vulnerable side to her as well, as Kat was orphaned quite young, and while Victor cared for her, his way of caring for her did not allow much of a childhood, fun, or innocence. She did not really gain any friends until going to finishing school and meeting Livie and Etta. Others she met through her training, such as Nathanial Black. Then finally, she loses Victor to an assassin, which sets her on a path for vengeance against the assassin, the Chameleon.
Marcus Black, the elder brother of Nathaniel, runs into Kat one night, when they both have the same goal. They are both looking for the journal of his deceased wife, which has clues about the Chameleon. Marcus believes it will exonerate his brother, who was painted as a traitor for dealing secrets to the Russians. Kat bests him in a fight and makes off with it. But they decide they should work together since they are both trying to achieve the same goal, to catch and stop the Chameleon.
So there we have it - fast paced spy story, and romance, set in Victorian England, with an ass-kicking heroine. Be still my beating heart - throw in a dog and I am in book heaven... oh wait, there was puppy at the beginning - cue the celestial choir!
Marcus Black was a bit too stiff and formal for my liking, also something pointed out by a few other characters. But what really got me was the female characters. The romance was nice, and expected, with some suitable heat and angst. But what really appealed to me was that the women drove the story far more than the men; I will not say more because of the risk of spoilers. Not to say the men were nothing but background characters, but really the women stood out. Again, we see again the Dragon Duchess, the outspoken, sharp witted godmother of Livie from the first book. We see a bit more of the friend Etta, hopefully as a lead up to her story. There are a couple of twists to the story that I could see developing, involving a few other women we meet in the story, but while they were not huge plot surprises, I enjoyed reading their development and denouement.
There was also the appearance of a character in the latter quarter of the book, that was referred to several times from the beginning that really had me thinking as well, that I would like to see a continuation of their story. Again, no other details because of spoilers, but the sense of loss, bitterness, angst, and regret makes me think that I would love to see their story looked at more, and some kind of hope and redemption in their future.
Loved this story, heck, even loved the detail about the easy detach/attach studs on the dresses. It was fast paced, lots of action, and strong, interesting characters. I would even love to see this translated to the screen!
4.75 stars out of 5 - it would be a 5 out of 5 if Marcus had less of a stick up his butt; Kat obviously does not need a hero - she is one herself.
This is a first time read by Maddison Michaels, new author to this reader. Well, I am one for stating that I was not anticipating this story to be quite this good. It had all the makings of keeping this reader engaged. You had a beautiful but, dangerous heroine by the name of Lady Kaitlin “Kat” Montrose and a handsome lethal hero, Marcus Black...agent of the Crown. There is mystery, intrigue, murder, and twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. This is one historical suspense romance that lived up to the plot.
Lady Kaitlin Montrose, after the deaths of her parents when to live with her uncle, Victor. She has been trained by him since the age of eight to protect herself…familiarized and skilled with knives, shooting and the arts. Her uncle wanted her to be a well-rounded arsenal if needed. Unfortunately, when her uncle is killed by an assassin, the Chameleon, she vows at all costs to track him down and make him pay. Then there’s the handsome, Earl of Westwood, Marcus Black who is his own right can be just as deadly, seeks the assassin too…to avenge his brother’s and wife’s murders.
Oh, how I love a combat. When the two set out to retrieve a secret diary that could lead them to the Chameleon, an altercation ensues between the two where Kat is subsequently the victor after coming too intimately close to Marcus. There’s were the attracting starts to brew. Seeing how both realize they can do more together than solo. I thought both Kat and Marcus were loveable characters, and the sub-characters, Lucas and Etta did their part of providing more angst to the story with their banter. It is unfortunate that women in espionage still must prove themselves way too much to men and that was clearly shown in this story at times. In that retrospect, that is what I loved about Kat. She was strong, intelligent, and fearless in her pursuits of what she wanted to do.
Concluding, I thought this was a wonderfully written story that had to me more than one plot, action, twists, and intimacy that I like between the H/h in my historical romances. Recommend the read and looking forward to Lucas and Etta’s story which I am hoping to be a part of this series.
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing LLC for this ARC in exchange for my fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
A murder mystery with many twists and turns! Both Marcus and Kat are equally trained in the art of defense. They are also both after The Chameleon an assassin who has destroyed their loved ones. Marcus comes to realize he cares for Kat and tries to protect her. Having been betrayed before, they both must have the courage to love again. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for my honest review.
Wowza! The name is Kat, Kat Bond and I am a lethal weapon! An exhilarating, daring, nonstop adventure, filled with murder, a major miscreant, spies, secrets and amazing characters that you cannot help but adore! Of course this author is one of my favorites that weaves a tale like no other!
Revenge.. of yes, Kat is after the man who murdered her uncle, right in front of her eyes and she is fearless in her pursuit. (It really made me sad about her uncle dying) She will not stop until she kills him.
Revenge is also on his mind, but Marcus was determined to bring the Chameleon to justice. When these two meet up, both with the same objective of stealing a journal, can I just say it was painful? At least for him?
Get ready to sit back and hold on, because you are in for a wonderful ride! Loved it!
A Wonderful Story full of kick-arse characters, mystery, intrigue, passion, and romance. A story that will keep you up all night turning pages as fast as you can!!
Maddison Michaels has created a fascinating story that includes a plot so full of twists that you just can’t help becoming captivated. A lot of times I worry that follow-up stories in a series will be less satisfying than book one, I can happily state The Bachelor Betrayal is every bit as good as book one The Bachelor Bargain, in-fact I enjoyed this story more!! This story is a historical romance plus so much more, almost resembles a James Bond movie, it’s a complex story including spies, family secrets, traitors, murderers, and assassins —- all embroiled with a passionate clandestine affair between the two MCs who are both afraid of love.
The MCs are Marcus Black, the Earl of Westwood, and Lady Kaitlyn Montrose, daughter of an Earl. These two have known each other for several years and both of them were trained in weapons, spying, and fighting by Kaitlyn’s uncle Victor Montrose. So, I absolutely loved Marcus - he is the perfect dominant, gentleman, badass - he is also on the heels of a horrible previous marriage that ended when his unfaithful wife was murdered by the notorious assassin, the chameleon. As far as Kaitlyn her character annoyed me at times but by the middle of the book I got used to her and came to see her as the perfect partner for Marcus. I loved watching Kat and Marcus fight their true feelings for each other while seeking answers and justice while simultaneously enjoying each other in a carnal nature.
The chemistry between these two was intense yet at the same time neither of them would admit the development of feelings for the other, the only time they were truly honest with each other was when they were between the sheets. So, although this story was not a slow burn with a huge amount of UST, the romance was a slow simmer. However it’s clear to everyone else in the story (and the reader) that these two are falling in love.
I can’t say much more about the story without potentially spoiling areas and I really don’t want to give any of the plot twists away 😉 it’s a book that is fast paced, highly entertaining, and I highly recommend it! I didn’t see the twists coming and the final reveal was a surprise.
I will say that Maddison Michaels knows how to write amazing, multifaceted, witty, and of course very sexy historical romances. She is an auto-read author for me! If you haven’t read her other books I encourage you to do so!
I can’t wait for the next story which will feature Lucas Devereux, the Marquis of Cantfield, and Henrietta (Etta) Merriweather— those two need a hazard label of combustible attached to them — I think their story will be highly entertaining. As for the rest of the series it looks like there are at least two more stories in this series from what I found on the authors website — I know I will be eagerly awaiting them!
Just a note: **Trigger Warnings: The Bachelor Betrayal features themes, imagery, and content that may be triggering for some readers. Scenes depicting graphic murder/assassinations/violence/death appear frequently throughout the story. It is my hope that these elements have been handled sensitively, but if they could be considered triggering to you, please take note.**
Thank you to the author and the publisher, Entangled Publishing LLC, for letting me read an ARC of this great romance book through NetGalley! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“He felt jealous. Damn it. Such feelings were perilous.”
“Let the game begin”
“She’s not a normal woman. She likes to play with fire”
I absolutely loved this book!!! Yes, it is the second in a series but they can be read as standalones so you don’t need to read the first one (though I highly recommend it because these books are fantastic)!!! I have already read one book from this author, “Tempting the Vicar”, and as good as that one was, finding in this one a great, badass female leading character was amazing and refreshing!!! I absolutely loved Kat and her relationship with Marcus !!! I couldn’t stop reading this book either because I wanted to read more spicy scenes about our great characters, or because I wanted to see what new mischief she was coming up with!! It’s been a great romance book with mystery, secrets, lies, familiar drama and a lot of tension and beautiful banter between the main characters!! Marcus is an astonishing, handsome man completely captivated by the strong-willed, great with weapons, almost trained soldier, beautiful woman who’s there to keep him on the edge and make him go crazy !!! I can’t wait to read more about another side couple whose story can develop in very interesting ways!!
“If you’re expecting me to do something unexpected, then it won’t really be a surprise at all when I do it, will it?”
“I’m going to spank you until you’re blacked and blue, woman!”
“She wanted to be pleasured? Then pleasured he would be certain she was”
“But Kat had always believed where there was a will, there was a way”
YES! Another fantastic book from Maddison. I love how Kat is so badass that she takes control of her own life and went after what she wanted. These types of stories (suspense) draw me in like no other stories. Maddison makes us think and realize some of our thinking is wrong but some is right, or we think we are right in guessing the villain. Just when one clue was thrown in we are lead into another direction. I did partially figure out the villain but…nope not going there, you will have to read it. Marcus and Kat are a favorite couple (like all of Maddison’s couples) and I love reading their verbal sparring and making up. I cannot get enough of these stories.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
OMG GUYS I think I found a new favorite Historical Romance Author that I want to now go a read her backlist! This one was so good! Had a lot of action, mystery romance and just a whole well round about story. The writing was that good. It was a fun treat to learn that Etta and Lucas' story is next, and I'm for sure going to go back and read the first in this series this week hopefully. I highly recommend this one, as I was never bored at all and I'm adding this to my favorites shelf.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Underestimating Marcus Black is the last thing his enemies ever do. After all, the respected Earl of Westwood is a deadly threat, when her Majesty needs him to be. And his only goal is to avenge his brother Nathaniel’s murder. Which would be much easier if the viciously-skilled Lady Kaitlyn Montrose wouldn’t swoop in, knee him in the bollocks, and then run off with his only lead. Kat is determined to avenge her beloved Uncle Victor’s murder and nothing will stop her. Especially not the devastatingly handsome, and equally lethal Marcus Black. If they worked together, they could be unstoppable. But when attraction gets in the way of vengeance, it’s more than hearts on the line. And only one person can win. This is second book in the series & I’ve been eagerly awaiting it & Oh Boy! it didn't disappoint. The very first page drew me in & I was engrossed, luckily I started it early in the day & had cleared the decks as I knew from experience that I wouldn’t be moving far until I’d finished it. Fast paced, lots of twists & turns, surprises, strong characters, witty banter & chemistry, which simmered & I was one very happy reader. I loved Marcus & really like Kat & thoroughly enjoyed their journey. I highly recommend this engrossing, enthralling, captivating read & look forward to Lucas & Etta’s story My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I am really enjoying this series! After finishing The Bachelor Bargain I quickly picked up The Bachelor Betrayal. I have to give it to Maddison Michaels, she knows how to write a fierce female lead. Kat was such a bada** who could keep up with the men in all aspects of her life. Marcus was a great lead for her, kind of broody, I’ll never love again kind of guy but who will protect you with his life kind of character. This one was definitely more of a mystery with lots of surprises. It wasn’t as slow of a burn as the first one and that carriage scene was 🔥. Im still blushing! And now that I’m finished I can’t wait for the next book in the trilogy. I have got to know what happens to Etta And Lucas, I see an epic friends to lovers, spy games edition!
Another winner from Ms Michaels! I completely loved this book. Lady Kaitlyn is the most memorable heroine I've read in a very long time - and I did have high expectations of her after her cameo in the epilogue of book 1, The Bachelor Bargain, and she certainly didn't disappoint in her own story. She kicks ass (literally and figuratively) and isn't afraid to stand up to the men. I seriously want to be Kat when I grow up. And her counterpoint Marcus Black was the perfect hero for her. He is strong, honorable and intelligent, and admires Kat for who she is. This story was full of action, mystery and romance. It was one hell of a ride, and I couldn't put it down. And boy what a twisty ending... seriously didn't see that coming... a five star read through and through.
Lady Kaitlyn Montrose has been trained her whole life by her uncle to be a lethal weapon in the spy game. When her uncle is murdered by the Chameleon, she is determined to get revenge. But when a promising lead comes along, she will need to ask Marcus Black for help to infiltrate the gentleman’s club. Marcus wants to find the Chameleon so he can clear his brothers name of treason. Deciding it’s beneficial to team up to catch the Chameleon, they start to let down their guard and they are attracted to each other to the point of distraction. Throughout the story, they both struggle with trusting each other, but in the end they must in order to survive!
I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in a day! So many twists and turns I didn't see coming and the romance between Marcus and Kat was so believable and passionate! Swoon! I can't wait for the next in the series!
The Heroine Kat is a force of nature. Being trained in all sorts of self-defense, she is a strong, independent woman hell-bent on avenging her beloved Uncle’s death. She was orphaned as a young child and was raised by her Uncle Victor. She worked along side him for years to solve cases for the Crown. She is determined to find the Chameleon to finish her Uncles work and avenge his murder.
The Hero Marcus Black, the Earl of Westwood, is a respected member of the peerage, but he double as an agent for the Crown when needed. He trained with Victor when he was younger and he, and his brother, were friends with Kat. After the murder of his wife, branding his brother a traitor and then his death, and the murder of Victor, Marcus is out for justice for all of them.
The Steam There were lots of steamy scenes and romance between Marcus and Kat.
Tropes Victorian Era, Steam Hot, steam Carriage, Historical Romance, East End London, Titled Hero, Tortured Hero, Detective/Agents of the Crown, Spinster, Virgin Heroine, Knife-wielding Heroine, Dresses as Male, Childhood Crush, Fling to Love, Betrayal, Mystery Romance, Blackmail, Secrets & Lies, Return of the Dead, Revenge Trope, Suspense/Danger/Murder
I received "The Bachelor Betrayal" from Netgalley and voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. Maddison Michaels is one of my favorite historical romance authors. Her beautiful sensual stories have so much charm and charisma. The rapport between all the characters is outstanding. In this story, the espionage is mind-boggling...the suspense, the intrigue... absolutely fascinating. Two spies, one suspect. Two murders, same suspect. Numerous murders, and one assassin. Lady Kaitlin Montrose and Marcus Black, Earl of Westwood have known each other for a very long time. They were both trained as spies by Kaitlin's uncle, and are now after the same person known as the Chameleon. They discovere that as independent as they are, working together would bring them closer to discovering the identity of the Chameleon sooner rather than later. At the same time, they have to find the courage to give each other their self dependence while still loving and taking care of each other. Mystery, suspense, romance... you name it, you've got it in this fantabulous story.
The Bachelor Betrayal, by Maddison Michaels. Well this book had it all for me. There was romance, sensual naughty moments. It had action. It had thrilling suspense. There was twisted betrayal and murder. In the middle of this there was bad a** Kaitlyn and her handsome Duke Marcus. Cheers to Kaitlyn’s character written as a independent woman who could think, make decisions and take care of herself even in hand to hand combat. Her character shows this all through the book. Hands down Kat is my favorite Heroine out of all the historical romance novels. I liked her sharp tongue and her intelligence. Marcus character is almost the same as Kat’s, but he tries to defer from being a raging bull running into a China shop committing chaos in his wake, then ask questions, while rounding up suspected felons. Through the book Marcus holds dear to his hart how much he cares for Kat. I like how the writer had Marcus fight with himself over his feelings for Kat. As the book progresses Marcus comes to an understanding of what is important to him in his life. I will admit that the book is a bit long. After the first couple of chapters I finally was able to really connect with the book. Having the action and fight scenes helped out with that. The writer did a great job with providing details to the most important points to the story. I thought that the plot to the story was spelled out clearly for me as a reader. I really enjoyed the emotional and heartfelt moments that the writer touched on. As I read these moments, it was as though you could feel what the character was going through. The romantic moments were amazing. I could have gone for a couple of more tumbles in the sheets with this book, but I was able to settle with the few four that the writer added in. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers… read on!
I enjoyed this book quite a lot. Kat was such a fun character. I love her fearlessness and competence. The plot was super compelling, though I did guess a twist or two along the way (I blame my over-familiarity with the genre for that). There was still a little weirdness with "darn" instead of "damn" being used in the strangest places. Overall it was a fun read.
Speed readers beware! You will not want to rush through this story. Every sentence is filled with glorious details and descriptions that you may miss. Maddison Michaels is a wizard with words, drawing us into her stories and holding us there from beginning to end. I read the book in one sitting and was left wanting more. Kat and Marcus try to convince the reader that neither want a relationship. They don’t succeed. It is clear that they are meant to be together, even if they don’t believe it. The chemistry is undeniable and exciting, as was the action. Kat’s prowess with Eastern martial arts makes her a force to be reckoned with and Marcus…well, let’s just say we could all use a man of his talents. Together, they make a formidable team. The mystery leads us on a merry chase coming to a very satisfying and surprising conclusion. I was gifted an ARC of The Bachelor Betrayal and would like to thank Maddison for the opportunity to read another wonderful story from the Secrets, Scandals and Spies series. Five stars. Lesley Ann
A MUST read for all of Maddison Michael's fans! Seriously y'all this was a fantastic read, I could not put it down... Page after page of twists, turns and mayhem, I was enthralled with Kat and Marcus' story. It was sensual, it was action packed, it was juggernaut of a ride. It's book 2 in the series, but could easily be read as a standalone (but I recommend you read book 1 which was equally as fabulous and had the best epilogue introducing Lady Kaitlyn - which you should read because it's hilarious). I'd give it a 6 stars if I could.
A big thank you to the publisher Entangled for providing me with a copy for me to voluntarily review.

Which would be much easier if the viciously-skilled Lady Kaitlyn Montrose wouldn’t swoop in, knee him in the bollocks, and then run off with his only lead… She wants revenge Kat is determined to avenge her beloved uncle’s murder and nothing will stop her. Especially not the devastatingly handsome, and equally lethal Marcus Black. The fact that he’s after the same target is a complication she hadn’t planned on. And as much as she enjoys taunting him, she has a job to do—one that doesn’t include sparring with the infuriating man at every turn. Except Kat has a new plan… one that Marcus will just hate. Now they’ll have to work together… if they don’t kill each other first Individually, Marcus and Kat are deadly. If they worked together, they could be unstoppable. But when attraction gets in the way of vengeance, it’s more than hearts on the line. And only one person can win... They all wanted justice but it wasn't to be. Treachery four fold made up the story of Kat and Marcus. This is an interesting storyline and I absolutely loved the read. Maddison Michaels has written a book that has spunk. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

The second in the Secrets, Scandals, and Spies series, I was almost apprehensive to read this one because I liked The Bachelor Bargain (first in the series) so much. I wasn't sure how Michaels could top the first book, but boy was I wrong. Kat wants to avenge her uncle at all costs, and Marcus wants to clear his brother's name. Both are well-trained spies trying to achieve their goals separately until their paths cross and entwine, and their missions become increasingly aligned. What I love about this love story is how Michaels portrayed our main couple. Marcus is kind, ruthless, and strong enough to be proud of Kat's training and strength rather than threatened. While Kat holds her own and does not diminish her skills for a man, she's also soft at times. The author layers this complex character to demonstrate that she isn't all revenge and fight scenes, and shows how this brutal world impacts her and those she cares about. At its core, this fast-paced, plot-driven story is about finding love when it's most unexpected. Michaels builds a relationship between our main couple built on loyalty and trust, and it's a relationship we can all root for joyfully. I truly enjoyed this installment in the series, and I hope that the author will continue it soon-- there are more stories I hope to read in this breakneck world! Thank you to TLC Book Tours and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Which sets Kaitlyn on a path with another one of her uncle's ex-student Marcus Black. He's after the Chameleon cause the chameleon killed his wife and set up his brother as traiter. The Chameleon also killed his brother Nathanel. I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Lady Kaitlyn Montrose has had an upbringing unlike any other. Raised by her spymaster uncle to be a agent of the Queen's, when her uncle is killed by the Chameleon, she is out for revenge. And it just so happens that the handsome Earl of Westwood, Marcus Black, is after the very same person. Joining forces with the same goal, they are a formidable threat, but the attraction growing between them may be the biggest threat of them all.
As a sort of enemies to lovers type book, I really enjoyed The Bachelor Betrayal. Neither of the main characters were interested in marrying, or in working together, to be honest, but they were willing to forgo their hesitations in order to stop the Chameleon, and avenge their loved ones. I liked the way that they rubbed off each other, and the banter between the pair was great. Their romance took some time to get started, but once it did, it was fiery. A great and quick historical romance!
I so so loved this book. Great story line and excellent protagonists in Kat and Marcus. Refreshing of the author to add an heroine such as Kat and a great mystery intrigue to boot. Also with the romance added on it made for such a good read. Looking forward very much to Etta and Luke story. Michèle Zito
Omg yes!! This book had everything I want in a book! Historical romance with mystery!! Starting off with a murder and then ends with love! The twists, turns and deceit kept Marcus and Kaitlyn’s story fast paced and a page turner!
Loved this so much! The first few chapters I read through a fever fog so I had to go back and re-read them but when I picked it up again I flew through the chapters. I loved these characters and they had great banter, not only with each other but all the other characters they interacted with, the Dragon Duchess, one of my faves.
The Chameleon reveal was a great surprise. I honestly did not suspect anyone specifically but there were a lot of secrets Kat learned before it was all over.
Getting glimpses of Etta and Lucas' interactions was fun and I can't wait for their book.
Lady Kaitlyn Montrose has made it her mission to avenge the death of her beloved uncle. While gathering information to identify who was behind his death, she bumps into Marcus Black. The Earl of Westbrook is a deadly threat when he needs to be, she knows because her uncle had a hand in his training. He also happens to be looking for the same person, who he knows is responsible for his brother's death.
Now they'll have to work together to find their common enemy. Their growing attraction is proving to be distracting until Kat makes a suggestion that Marcus isn't crazy about.
Thanks so much to the author, Entangled and NetGalley for this ARC to review.
