Dancing with the enemy is a terrible idea. Falling for him is so much worse.
Angie’s life was a choreographed dance– thoughtfully planned and perfectly executed.
Until a year ago.
Losing her job, moving to a new town, and barely making ends meet? Definitely not part of the plan.
Neither is living in the same town as Johnny—a guy with more charm than a box of leprechaun-themed cereal. His toothpaste ad-worthy smile might work on every other girl, but not on Angie. For the most part.
When her dance partner breaks his foot and can’t help teach the charity ballroom dance lessons she’d agreed to, Angie is desperate to find a new partner. Not in life, of course. Just on the dance floor.
Johnny is the last person she wants to tango with, but his help is an offer she can’t refuse. Besides, keeping your enemy close is supposed to be a smart move, right?
But during the long rehearsals and late nights, Angie sees he might not be the villain she thought. Although, that’s part of his routine, isn’t it? She’s seen this story play out before. She knows all too well how it ends with guys like him.
If she doesn’t tighten up her frame, Johnny will continue to cha-cha his way even closer. And this time, he might do more than step on her feet.
He might stomp right on her heart.
A sweet, feel-good romantic comedy, Shut Up and Dance has slow-burn chemistry and plenty of sizzle without on-page explicit content.
Lindsey Jesionowski is a wife and mom who does most of her writing in her car in the school pickup lot. She’s a native of West Virginia, a lover of coffee, and a fan of books with happy ever afters—so she decided to write one.
Lindsey’s books are full of heart and humor with plenty of sizzle and no explicit content. Just lots of smiles.
I loved, loved, loved this book!!! I grinned nearly the whole time and read it in less than 24 hours!
Johnny is hilarious and I'm so glad he got his own book. Angie was also really amazing, too, and I related and felt for her character in ways I didn't expect. Plus, it was great seeing Hannah and Max again!
Being the West Virginian that I am, I highly appreciated the multiple cameo appearances that pepperoni rolls made in this book. I know that sounds silly, but pepperoni rolls are my favorite food, and if you've never had one, I hope this book influences you to whip up a batch!
I can't wait to see what else Lindsey writes!! She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!
And a huge thank you to Lindsey for the ARC! I nearly squealed when I saw it in my inbox.
Lindsey does it again! This book has the perfect mix of romance, laughs, sass, and real-life hardships. She writes wonderful characters and beautiful happily-ever-after stories!
I am so glad we got Johnny's story. Ever since I met him as a character in Alone Together, I knew his story would be so good! Johnny and Angie fit so well together! I love how at the beginning Angie is all sass! I see a bit of myself in her. I love that Johnny took dance lessons, so he could step in as her partner! Johnny's brother has Down Syndrome, and I love the relationship they have. Johnny also has a special bond with his mom, and I love that we got to see that side of him!
I recommend this book, and I cannot wait to read more from Lindsey!
Content Warning: -Death of a parent (past) -Kisses only -No language *This is a clean closed-door romance.
Not bad for a free download. I have not read the other books in the series so I think I missed the introduction of these main characters. I felt like something was missing in this book. It seemed that more emphasis was placed on sexual attraction than anything else.
Have you read this book yet? NO!? Ok, stop whatever it is you’re doing and add to cart! You won’t regret it!
This book had everything I love in a RomCom. I knew I was going to get along well with Lindsey’s writing within the first two pages. The sass is served right from the start. The characters in this story both come with a lot of deep hurt from their pasts. Walls are put up, but walls are also broken down. I love it when a story brings all the giggles, but I also appreciate complex characters. Not too heavy, but not too light either. This book is a beautiful balance and representation of it all.
Angie’s life is falling apart around her. Nothing seems to go right and to add another negative to her downward spiral, she just got news that her dance partner has broken his foot. She’s desperate for a new partner to help teach the charity ballroom lessons, but is she desperate enough when the one man that makes her skin crawl seems to be the only option? Angie is repulsed by Johnny and considers him an egotistical womanizer. But perhaps she’s made a lot of angry assumptions about a man she hardly knows. You’re going to love the way their relationship evolves. These characters are going to dance right into your heart.
Johnny’s brother Matty has Down Syndrome and I was tearing up reading about their special bond. Also, the heart-to-heart moments between Johnny and his mom were so beautiful. I could truly go on and on about this book, but the captions space is only so long. Lol This book is 249 pages so you can easily binge in one day and then you too will have a new favorite author to add to your list. 😊

My opinion:
I really loved the writing and the characters. Angie has a mindset similar to mine, so was easy for me to connect with her. Johnny is amazing and already got a spot on my book boyfriends list. Even though is a close-door book, I could feel the HEAT and the chemestry between them (Just because I don't want to read anything explicit, doesn't mean I don't want my books to have flavour). I like the world build around it, without so many side-characters that we can loose track of the story. Can't wait to read the other books of the series!

This dance filled, swoony, and hilarious rom com was so much fun to read!
Angie finds herself without a job and is settling into a new town. The last thing she needs is the attention of the charming and unbelievably handsome man, Johnny, who she believes-no, she knows is definitely a ladies man. Johnny has always had a thing for Angie, but Angie seems like she only has one thing for Johnny-dislike. When Angie’s dance partner breaks his foot, Angie would take on anyone to be her partner to uphold her commitment to performing in a local charity event. Even if that replacement partner is the one and only, Johnny. As Angie and Johnny spend more time together, they both realize that they have more in common than they think, and that what others see on the outside is only what they perceive, and not truly who they both are and they soon embrace who they are truly meant to be. And that includes being together.
I loved this story and the ballroom dance elements (along with Johnny’s humor), were such a fun breath of fresh air! I can’t wait to dive into more books by this author.
Romantic Content: Attraction Mildly Descriptive, Closed Door
Is there anything better than visiting with good friends? That is exactly what it feels like to return to Wheeling, WV, and reuniting with Angie, Johnny, Hannah, Max and the rest of the crew. I already knew I was going to love Angie and Johnnys' story after being introduced to them in Alone Together the first book in this series and let me tell you Shut Up and Dance did not disappoint.
Angie has recently moved to Wheeling, WV to be closer to her best friend Hannah and to start fresh. She works as an English teacher at the local school but her true passion is dancing. So when the opportunity to teach dance lessons at the local gym in preparation for their charity dance-a-thon she jumps and the chance. It is easy to empathize with Angie, she struggles to let love in after having been disappointed and abandoned by her father. She has a hard time opening her heart and trusting another man won’t leave her too. She has build up walls to guard her heart and while she has been telling herself she is ok with living her life in the safe zone she starts to question is she is being honest with herself as Johnny slowing chips away at those walls.
Johnny has a smile that could knock you off your feet and enough charm to make any girl swoon but he has sworn he wouldn’t open his heart to heartbreak again. He is the kind of guy who would do anything for those he cares about and it is obvious very early on that sparks will fly between him and Angie. The way they banter, the back and forth is so good and really builds the tension between them. It was so fun to see how the walls they had build to protect themselves were also blinding them to how the other was obviously growing more and more fond of them.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to what I am hoping will be Sami and Chris’s story next.
Thank You to author Lindsey Jesionowski for the gifted eARC. This does not affect my opinion of the book and I leave my honest review voluntarily.
This book is the best! My favorite from the series so far! I 've just loved this man since book 1😍. I was waiting for Johnny's story so bad & it didn't disappoint!
Johnny in the rain? Yes please😍🙌🏻. Max helping him will be one of my favorite things ever😂. Having Max & Hannah again was so special.
Their chemistry was off the charts🔥. At first I had my reservations with Angie, but then she won me over. She was deeply hurt before... It was good to see her growth.
The rawest scene was so beautiful! I love it so much! They were amazingly vulnerable 💙. Their first kiss was everything 😭🥺🔥.
I loved the date👠! what led to it & what happened after! Him needing more convincing was so cute 😭😍.
I love how those situations were handled. Their teamwork was the dream🩰.
The plot was so clever! I had my suspicions at first, & it was so well done! I love it! Lindsey wrote such an awesome story! I went from laughing so hard, to having my heart hurting for what they went through. But it was so worth it.
I loved his grand gesture, he was so special😍. The final chapters were amazing! I love this series . Johnny's my favorite character that's for sure.
This man's pure sweetness & muscles 💪🏻. He was always cheerful, kind, honest & ready to make anyone laugh... But he was also hurting inside. I loved to see him talk things through, ask for space & figure things out. Angie was so sweet when it was her time to support him🧁
Am I gonna share w/ you the next sneak peek without any context? Yes, yes I am. 😂
🩰 "Johnny had always heard that if you stood too close to the sun, you’d get burnt. Now he knew if you looked at a woman’s legs for too long, you’d see stars." 🪩
You have to read this one! Lindsey, count me in for what's to come💙

☕ * I was kindly gifted an ARC from the author. This doesn't influence in any form my review/opinion of the book*
Shut Up and Dance is the second (full) book in the When In West Virginia series. It can be read just fine as a standalone if you haven't read the previous book.
I learned everything I know about ballroom dancing from watching Dancing With the Stars... which is to say, I really don't know a lot! But when I read this book description, I was drawn in. I enjoy a good enemies-to-love story, as they already have that back-and-forth built right in. In this case, Angie and Johnny weren't true enemies... Rather they were both broken characters with pasts they were working through so she disliked him (greatly) for what she believed to be true about him while he hoped to change her mind about him. Watching their back and forth, and seeing them truly get to know one another was so much fun. It very much was like a dance and worked together so well with that ballroom theme. I found myself unable to put it down, wanting to see how it all worked out. While their dancing (and the kisses) led to some swoon-worthy moments, this is a closed-door romance that goes nothing beyond kissing and mentions of physical attraction.
As much as I loved the chemistry between these two, I also have to say that their group of friends truly made their story all that much better. They are hilarious and loving, and I definitely want to see more from them! Overall, if you're looking for your next closed-door RomCom, this one is definitely worth checking out.
**I received an ARC for consideration. All opinions are my own.
4.5 stars!! Oh my goodness… I was waiting to read Johnny’s story and it did NOT disappoint! In Lindsey Jesionowski‘s first book I read (Mishaps and Mistletoe), I met Johnny and instantly needed to know more about him… because I could tell there was more to him than meets the eye. I was right… this book did him so much justice (and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him)! Also… an overly charming, hot, MMC who rocks a backwards hat can do no wrong (in my opinion)! Johnny’s best friend Max is about to marry Hannah, who has a best friend named Angie that seems to despise/not understand a single thing about Johnny. The feeling seems mutual… but they eventually decide they should try to put aside their differences and learn to get along “for the good of the friend group” and to make sure the wedding goes as smoothly as possible. This book had deep emotional storylines for both of the main characters, and I loved reading how their pasts formed the people they are and also helped them ultimately bond together (even with all the resistance). The witty banter and undeniable chemistry (even if Angie and Johnny were the only ones who couldn’t see it) between the two kept me intrigued and wanting to read this book straight through to the end. I can’t lie that the “Bro-Room Dance Club” was hilarious and made me love all the male characters in this book so much! If you like hilarious, closed door romcoms that have main characters who bring out the best qualities in one another when they are together… then this is the book for you! I definitely recommend this read!
What happens when you detest your best friend’s fiancée’s best friend?! Sounds confusing right, not as much as you might think…hence the plot of this fun story!
Angie has been extremely down on her luck as of late, like walk under a ladder bad luck! Between losing her job, getting a random flat tire, moving to a new down to be closer to her engaged bestie (Hannah), her walls are higher than ever! What does she need to turn her frown upside down…certainly not some flirty, muscle bound neanderthal!
Enter Johnny, best friend to Max, lifelong resident of Wheeling, physical therapist, never without a smile, and always willing to help a friend! He comes across as overly flirtatious and happy go lucky, but there’s more than meets the eye! This man is the moth to Angie’s flame, and she didn’t even ask for him- which makes things slightly awkward! He helps fix the flat tire and jumps into the world of dance all for the sake of a good cause!
While grateful for his help because let’s be honest nobody wants to be left stranded, Angie stays guarded until a fateful power outage! These two protagonists have such different approaches in the way they conduct themselves and yet are similar in the most unlikely of ways! This book is good for all the feels! It will have you laugh, cry, cringe, and everything in between! It was fun to go back to West Virginia again and see the gang and hopefully a new novel will be on the horizon, but until then I will learn to be patient! Great job Lindsey!
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 Angelica is new in town, moving to be closer to her best friend Hannah and working a stable teaching job. Hannah’s love, Max’s best friend Johnny really knows how to get Angie’s back up though. So when they keep meeting, eventually the two get to a truce, but there are sparks of chemistry all over. When Angie is going to be ballroom dancing in the local Danceathon, and her former partner Andy isn’t able to join her, Johnny steps up and learns the moves to be able to dance with her. Could there be more feelings than either of them are prepared to admit?
𝗠𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 I ARC read Lindsey’s first and second books and was excited for this next instalment. While there are shared characters, these stories read perfectly as standalones as well. So…. Both Johnny and Angie come into their acquaintance with life baggage. Angie’s father left her and her mother when she was young, and it’s left her wary of relationships. Johnny’s father was killed as a policeman in the line of duty, and his previous relationship ended badly. As the story takes place and they spend time together, they are able to trust in each other and truly see the other for who they are, which makes all the difference. There’s also a twist in the story that is the sweetest. A fun read! 🫶
Read on Kindle Unlimited My rating 4/5 - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
4.5 rounded up. Lindsey was one of the first authors I connected with on bookstagram last year, and she is one of the kindest and sweetest people who writes such relatable characters and swoony love stories. I’ve been invested in her fictional world since the pandemic-era Alone Together, and I’m SO excited we finally get Johnny’s story in Shut Up and Dance!
Johnny is the jokester of the group, the easy-going friend who makes everyone laugh, but that’s to cover his insecurities so he won’t get hurt. Angie’s perfectly laid plans have fallen apart and she finds respite with her best friend as she picks up the pieces of her career and personal life. Johnny knows the buttons to get under Angie’s skin, and she’s certain that he’s laying on the charm because that’s what he does with everyone. When she needs a dance partner for the upcoming dance-a-thon, Johnny volunteers his shabby dance skills so Angie can see her vision come to life. They work through the missteps together, and their animosity toward each other turns to friendship and affection.
One of my favorite things about this book is that both characters had to really become vulnerable with their insecurities from failed relationships and family let-downs. What is seen on the surface is very rarely what’s happening on the inside, and both Angie and Johnny invested in each other and their relationship faced natural setbacks along the way. For a closed door romance, I still managed to feel my skin flush at a few of the scenes (sunscreen, backwards hat, massages… IYKYK).
Thank you Lindsey for the eARC - all opinions are my own.
This is book 2 (but could be 3 if you count the holiday book) in Lindsey's When in West Virginia series. It can very easily be read as a stand-alone book, and you won't miss any goodness. This book is filled with amazing banter. The push and pull between these two; Angie and Johnny are perfect for each other. Lindsey does such a great job of making you feel like you are reading a real-life tango dance in book form...they hate one another, they love one another...how will it end? They both suffer from trauma in past relationships that cause their walls to be built of concrete and you will be sucked in feeling like part of their friend group. If you love close door romance, slow burn builds, Friend references and Easter eggs, adorable banter, surprise twists, a tight friend group, and dancing this is the perfect read for you!
Thank you, Lindsey, for my free eBook! It wasn't expected for me to leave positive feedback. These opinions are 100% my own.
i am grateful i got to read an arc copy of this book, it was amazing. this is a sweet enemies to lovers romcom. it is one of the funniest and most romantic books i’ve read in a while and i cannot praise it enough. 🥰 Johnny and Angie are a perfect match, tho they don’t see it from the start. Angie misjudged who Johnny was and didn’t see the kind, caring, sweet person he actually is. both of them have built their walls up so high, trying to keep everyone out. Johnny starts to break down Angie’s walls and his slowly crumble as well. they become more vulnerable with each other and share very intimate moments, growing closer than they ever thought they could. Lindsey Jesionowski is an amazing author, and tho this is the first of her books i am reading, i will be rushing to read the rest soon. i can already tell she is becoming one of my favorite authors. overall, her writing is amazing and if you love hilariously sweet romances, this is a book you should pick up immediately.😁
This book was wonderfully written and one you won’t want to put down. It’s an easy read and a clean romance.
Angie is new in town and is loving feeling like part of the group in her new group of friends. That is all except for Johnny. Johnny is everything Angie hates in men. She sees him flirt and go out with a different women every night. But she has to put her feelings aside and get along with him for the sake of their friend group. Without her walls up she may find out everything isn’t as it seems.
I received a free review copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
If you are in a search for an enemies to lovers romcom that is full with funny banter - this book is for you! 🤩
I think Johnny is a great book boyfriend : loyal, caring, attentive, charming and always ready to help! And Angie is a strong female character who squires lemonade out of all the lemons that life throws her way. I enjoyed the character development and the way both heroes overcame their fears!
This is my first book by the author but I am sure I will read other books in this series, the first one and ones that will come after 😍
I was reading this book as a part of ARC team and this is my honest review.
This is my first book by Lindsey Jesionowsky and I'm desperate for more!
Johnny had me cracking up much of the book and I really responded to Angie's character. I liked her relatable day job (teacher) with her passion being dance. I mean, how can we not all relate to that? I also will now go and buy Hannah and Max's story because I am smitten. I need more!
I loved how both characters had a difficult past with heartbreak in differing ways. It made their happily ever after that much more enjoyable. If you haven't already, add this to your TBR and order it today.
Thanks to the author, Lindsey Jesionowski for an eARC. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to read more.
That book. It was swoony and clever and sweet and romantic and funny and so many other good things. Johnny was adorable, his long haul game was on point. Angie was great- I loved having a strong willed female lead that was easy to root for because she was lovely. (Sometimes they are too much of something and I don't love them. But that was not this case)
If you love dance, friend groups, movie references, enemies to more- except not really enemies as much as not fans to big fans, all mixed into a smile inducing story, absolutely read this one!
Available in KU and paperback. Thank you to the author for the ARC. All opinions are my own!
Thank you Author Lindsey Jesionowski for the ARC! I am voluntarily leaving a review. Johnny is the chef's kiss of book boyfriends. Angie is down on her luck and a total grump when it comes to Johnny. Their best friends are getting married so they will have to tolerate each other at least a little bit, right? The more Angie learns about Johnny the more attracted and confused she becomes. Will these two stop "dancing" around their issues and get together?
Just a delightful book! A bit of a reverse grump/sunshine vibe. She has been scorned in the past and wont let that happen again. Johnny is the happy go lucky guy who won’t let her slip away. He will do anything to spend time with her, even if it means volunteering to dance with her (despite his lack of knowledge of dance). What ensues is hilarity and swoon. So much sweet swoon. I loved this book so much.
Way too much over the top ogling of each others bodies and sexual attraction only. A bit crude in places, with the guy saying the girl was going to bite his head off or his danglies. All this was supposed to be redeemed by the hero having a heart for special needs kids? Couldn’t hold my interest….
Great read! I really liked the development of Angie and Johnny's relationship and I loved the fact that he learned to dance for her... Swoon! There was fab chemistry and having read Alone Together, it was great to continue to hang out with this lovely group of friends. All the feels here.
I was SO pumped to get Johnny’s story and I was not at all disappointed by it. I ended it loving him even more than I did when I went into it, which says a lot!
We got a ton more of his backstory and the emotional scars he carries, and subsequently how they affected his personality currently. I ached for him to have a different perspective on everything after all the pain he’s experienced, but I also completely adore him and his family and wouldn’t change them for the world.
I must say, while I love a good grumpy character, Angie was not what I expected. And she was such a joy to get to know more about. I loved watching Johnny crack her shell and help her change her perspective on life as well. She is one of the most compassionate people and the way she fit into Johnny’s life was so effortless and beautiful, that it was definitely heartwarming watching their love unfold and grow stronger after each chapter.
I cracked up several times in this story and also squirmed a little bit when it came to the physical connection between these two crazy kids. Their chemistry was fire! I laughed and cried and squealed over the scene with the pizza rolls and pool party.
If you’re in the mood for food, coffee, laughing, or dancing at almost all times then this is a book you don’t want to miss!
Thanks so much to Lindsey Jesionowski for the eARC, all opinions expressed are my own.
This was such a cute read and I loved Johnny and Angie as a couple. Their tension and chemistry was so strong and the way Johnny worked hard to make Angie change her mind about him was admirable. The friend group was excellent and provided a hilarious aspect to the story, seeing the way Johnny enlisted the help of his friends so he could develop dancing skills to ultimate come to Angie's aid was one of the sweetest things I've read. Johnny is all about the details, and he pays close attention to what Angie needs.
Lindsey Jesionowski does an excellent job in luring the reader down a particular path, I was convinced the story was going in a very specific direction - which I'm glad it didn't, but the subtle twist was excellent.
The world the Jesionowski built was excellent, grounded in multiple food references, I felt I truly got a taste of the West Virginia, I also enjoyed the multiple Friends references - hello Hugsy!
I truly enjoyed the style of writing, super easy to read and definitely funny. Would highly recommend if you're after a super sweet love story!
A great second book in this series. Loved Johnny and Angie and the continuing development of other relationships from previous books. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
