An Amish Mystery #4

This Little Piggy: Kappy King and the Pig Kaper

Rate this book
They only came to buy a pig… Jimmy Peachey, lover of all animals, has finally done it. He’s finally convinced his sister, Edie, to allow him to raise pigs. But when he, Edie, and Kappy arrive at the farm to buy the swine, they have another surprise in store. Balthazar Lapp, the ultra-conservative Amish pig farmer, is lying on the floor of his greenhouse, bludgeoned to death. After an anonymous caller tips off police, Jimmy’s friend Tiny is arrested for the murder. Jimmy begs Edie and Kappy to help get his friend out of jail, but with a prison record and the possible murder weapon found in his car, Tiny will remain behind bars. Yet strange things are still happening around the valley. Corn is mysteriously growing at the abandoned farm behind Edie and Jimmy’s house. Balthazar’s wife disappears just days after his death along with all his livestock and the huge crop of medicinal marijuana from his greenhouse. And Jimmy is convinced that the Lapps’ neighbor, Gerald Kent, stole one of their pigs—the very same, ‘special’ pig Balthazar had been trying to sell to Tiny on the day of his murder. It’ll take all Kappy’s wits to put the clues together and figure out who the murderer is, but it’s only at the Third Annual Smoking in the Valley barbecue competition that she uncovers just how special this little piggy really is.

I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.

I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!

I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.

I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.

I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.

I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)

Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.

This Little Piggy: Kappy King and the Pig Kaper by Amy Lillard is the fourth A Kappy King Kaper. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. This Little Piggy is a cute lighthearted cozy mystery. I love the quirky characters in this tale. Kappy, Edie, and Jimmy are a hoot. I laughed often while reading This Little Piggy. Each character is unique, and Jimmy is a sweetheart. Jimmy has a wonderful way with animals and for winning over his sister. Even though Edie kept telling Jimmy that he could only have one pig, you knew he would find a way to get more than one. Jimmy was certainly in hog heaven with all the pigs in this story. Kappy certainly has her hands full with her two beagles (master escape artists). I enjoyed following Kappy along with Edie and Jimmy Peachey as they set out to uncover who murdered local farmer, Balthazar Lapp. The mystery was entertaining. It seemed everyone that Kappy and her crew spoke with had their own idea of what happened to Balthazar. There were certainly some surprising secrets uncovered during the investigation. It is all wrapped up nicely at the end. I had to laugh at Edie who was trying to imitate the female detective in her appearance. I liked the message that you should only be yourself. We are each unique and special so we should not try to be someone else. This Little Piggy is a lively tale an addled address, disorderly swine, a lifeless farmer, wacky tobacky, abnormal notches, bothersome beagles, a fake façade, and a plethora of pigs.

This Little Piggy, Kappy King and the Pig Kaper by Amy Lillard was a fun book to read.
I was so happy to see another Kappy King book in the series because it's a series I enjoy reading.
This is a fun, lighthearted Amish cozy mystery series.
Quirky characters that you'll remember from previous books in the series. This book set in Pennsylvania will keep you entertained.
I especially enjoyed the character Jimmy, the tenderhearted animal lover.
Great read. I hope the series continues.
I was given a complimentary copy of the book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

This Little Piggy Earns 5/5 Calendar Words…Entertaining Fun!

Kappy King is tagging along with her good friend and neighbor Edie Peachey who is following through with a promise to her mentally-challenged brother. Jimmy is quite the animal fanatic and is excited about adding pigs to his menagerie. Edie, of course emphasizes, “Pig. Singular. One pig.” Jimmy’s attention is immediately seized by the sight of a road full of pigs. A truck had run off the road, and it’s load was scampering all over. No driver to be found, so they stop to wrangle as many piglets as they could until animal control arrives. After their exciting side adventure, they head off on their errand to the Kent farm to pick up “one” pig for Jimmy, but no one’s answering the door. Jimmy spies several pigs in the pen noticing a little one with a notched ear much like the pigs they spent time rescuing. Jimmy heads to the greenhouse, and stops…he found the farmer dead. Issue become more complicated when they discover they’re not where they’re suppose to be. Jimmy had left the directions at home, so it isn’t Gerald Kent, it’s Balthazar Lapp, and it isn’t everyday pigs Jimmy is eyeing, but specialty miniature potbellies. More curious details, missing persons, unexplained crops, and pigs pop up, but Jimmy can’t believe the man the police arrest is guilty. He pleads for Kappy’s help, and help she does.

Amy Lillard’s fourth book, in her Kappy King Kaper Mystery, is quite entertaining with a clever mystery, diverse characters, a couple of dogs, and lots of pigs. It’s been a few years between books, but plenty of helpful background bits are provided to get both fan and newbie up to speed. The mystery was very intriguing with revelations about the victim’s greenhouse, a debate over medicinal and recreational uses of marijuana, the barbecue competition, and pigs, the investigation realistic with eavesdropping and some informal snooping, and the final conclusion was a surprise twist. I enjoyed Kappy and Edie’s teamwork, and the fact they didn’t always circumvent law enforcement. Amy’s writing has several realistic elements including interspersing German phrases often used in the Amish community.

Kappy King lives the Amish ways although she’s not perfect rationalizing her reading of many of “verboten” detective novels which does well to explain her mindset when investigating. She doesn’t avoid or criticize, but often embraces her new friend and neighbor Edie’s use of a cell phone, extra solar panels, and a car because she recognizes they sure come in handy. Edie’s sister/guardian dynamic with her brother is portrayed well, too, with realistic snaps, cajoles, and several “no-s” with dubious explanations, yet mellowed with endearing moments. She hadn’t anticipated life again among the Amish community, and her dilemma about whether she wants to remain in a community still “shunning” her has a surprising resolution. Romance, too maybe available for both young women. Entertaining fun!

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

For the most part I enjoyed my return to Blue Sky. I bought a paperback copy and there were quite a few mistakes in it. I didn’t like the encouragement for marijuana that I felt like came towards the end. The paperback copy is 279 pages and the cover is fun and happy!

Where will the clues lead them...

Kappy, Edie, and Jimmy are back...but this time the mystery has gone to pot...errr...the pigs... I've been a confirmed fan of this mystery-solving trio since the very first Kappy King Kaper novel so I was pretty excited to read This Little Piggy. Boy, did Amy Lillard take things in a bit of a different direction than I expected...

But I enjoyed every minute of trying to puzzle out the mystery and unearth who-done-it. There are suspects aplenty to sort through with Kappy as she also tries to keep tabs on two very busy dogs with a penchant for coming back home with some very suspicious 'grass'. And then there was that other puzzling little mystery in This Little Piggy, what's up with Edie and Jack? Only time will tell with that second one and I sincerely hope that Amy Lillard has more Kappy King Kapers forthcoming, and soon, because I just HAVE to know!

If you've never read an Amish cozy mystery before you should really check out Amy Lillard's quirky Kappy King Kapers because they are so much fun to read! They are lower on romance and high on mystery, sorry, that pun was very much intended after reading This Little Piggy, LOL! Anyway, you won't want to miss a single one!

This was another fun book by Amy Lillard. Strange things are happening! And who better to figure out what than Kappy, Edie and Jimmy. These three characters are so lovable and their antics add to the solving of a murder in the small town of Blue Sky, Pennsylvania. Jimmy has to be my favorite. He may have Down syndrome but he’s very smart, learning more each day and an animal lover “to boot”. He loves animals so much that he’s turned into a vegetarian. Kappy, so nicknamed because she makes Amish caps for the ladies in her community, has her hands full trying to keep “Poppy” her foster dog beagle from escaping her backyard fence. The eventual discovery of why is really quite fascinating. What does an overturned piglet delivery truck, an oversized unusual pig, a dead farmer and growing medicinal marijuana have in common, or does any of it? You can certainly believe that these three will do their best to try and find out. A little love interest on the part of Kappy and Edie adds to this reader’s enjoyment. See if you can figure out “who dun-it” (no peeking in the back!) because I surely did not.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise, all opinions are strictly my own.

This Little Piggy is the fourth tantalizing mystery written by Amy Lillard in her Happy King Kaper series. This book is full of mystery, murder, and yes marijuana. The characters are the same fantastic characters from previous books with a few new ones thrown in. When Happy, Edie, and Jimmy happen upon an over turned truck and little piggies scattered everywhere the adventure begins. With Jimmy actively seeking a pet mini pig they also happen upon a dead Amish man and a greenhouse full of marijuana. Happy discovers more about the dead body than the hit on his head which starts Edie and her next great adventure. Where it leads them is absolutely unthinkable. I enjoyed this story and found myself chuckling in parts. I have enjoyed this series and look forward to their next kaper.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

This book is such a delight! I love stories with dogs and puppies but who knew that pigs could be just as special? Amy Lillard shares a story that had me laughing out loud, and scratching my head at the same time, as I tried to figure out what happened to Balthazaar Lapp. Yes, he was murdered, but who in Blue Sky, Pennsylvania would be capable of murder? Most of the people who live there are Amish, and they're known for being peaceful, non-violent people! Can our heroine, Kappy King, find the killer? Will her special friends Edie and Jimmy help her play detective once again?

This Little Piggy has unique characters, unanswered questions, some interesting happenings, and an intriguing emotional dilemma for Kappy. Hiram seems to have feelings for her, but she finds herself thinking more and more about Silas...is there romance in the air for this talented Kapp maker? This is Lillard's fourth book in the Kappy King series, and I thoroughly enjoyed her fun, entertaining story. I recommend it to all who enjoy Amish fiction and cozy mysteries.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Hi ya Kappy King! So glad to see you and your friends again! I didn't think I'd get to read about you again!
Lillard has once again brought our delightful heroine back to solve yet another mystery.
She has done an incredible job of bringing our friends to life and I loved solving the mystery with along them.
I was definitely happy to see Jimmy.
You gotta love him.
I really really didn't want to put this book down because I didn't want it to end. I'm hoping Kappy will be back.
Some scenes you just have to laugh out loud at. Some just leaves you shaking your head. But that's the way my new friends are!
Seems trouble is always finding them lol.
I'd love to give this more than 5 stars. This book definitely is a page turner!
I highly recommend this book and all of the others too.

This Kappy King Kaper cozy mystery is a lighthearted tale with plenty of antics from Edie, Kappy and Jimmy. Jimmy is a favorite character with his tender heart and love of animals shining through. The mystery involved finding a dead farmer when they were on a mission to pick up for a pig for Jimmy. Jimmy may have Down’s Syndrome but his perception and being observant made this a great read. The mystery surrounding the farmer led to plenty of events that usually found Edie and Kappy involved with Jimmy tagging along. Lillard has a way to draw her readers in from the start until the truth is discovered to who is behind the mystery, while weaving a wonderful description of Blue Sky, PA and the differences with the Amish based on their buggy tops and practices.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author without any obligation to write a positive review. I have expressed my own opinion.

This is another in the Kappy King Kapers series. And it is a fun and is a cozy Amish mystery that you will enjoy. This light hearted mystery is entertaining and has fun and quirky characters that you will enjoy and remember from previous books. I enjoy Jimmy, who can be a bit of a challenge, now and then, but is truly loveable. This is a fun who-dunit and everyone has something to say about what happened to poor old Balthazar!
You will love the fun with the pigs and Jimmy is in "Pig heaven". I have to personally relate to Jimmy's love for pigs as my mom raised two little pigs when we was a girl. So I especially enjoyed the cute story.

It's an enjoyable book and I loved it as I have the previous books, as well.

Hi ya Kappy King! I'm so happy to see you again! I've missed you, Edie and Jimmy so much!
I've often wondered if I'd ever see y'all again and alas! You're back bigger and better than ever before with the funniest adventure I've ever heard of!
I think I'll call y'all the three musketeers!
I must admit that I've learned much throughout this sweet and funny adventure that I simply couldn't put the book down. I finished it in one day.
I had no idea there were so many unique Amish people and pigs that at times it made my head spin.
Once more Lillard has kept her readers guessing as to whom the culprit is. My was I surprised!
Kappy is just the coolest Amish girl there ever was!
I had a few favorite scenes in there that made me giggle. I won't say because I don't want to give them away. The book blurb does that.
I enjoyed this book to the fullest. I hope Kappy will always be around!
I didn't want the story to end.
I highly recommend.

This Little Piggy : Kappy King and the Pig Kaper by Amy Lillard
They only came to buy a pig…
Jimmy Peachey, lover of all animals, has finally done it.
This is Kappy King and English best friend Edie and Jimmy Peachey's story.
Balthazar Lapp, the ultra-conservative Amish pig farmer and wife's story.
“And no more digging.” Kathryn King, known to all Blue Sky, Pennsylvania, as Kappy, pointed a finger at the two beagles seated on the floor in front of her. They wagged their tails as if they understood. But who knew? She was being stern. Yet she had the feeling there would be a hole or two for her to contend with when she got back from this errand with Jimmy and Edie Peachey. In the last year or so, she had become very close to the brother and sister duo who lived across from her.
Edie was the reason Kappy had the two mutts. Okay, so they were actually purebred registered hounds, but sometimes they acted like common old dogs, digging their way under the fence and running around the valley wreaking havoc.
“Are you listening to me?”
Poppy, the newest edition to the King family, though the older of the two dogs, barked. She was a rescue, brought to the Peachey farm by the Beagle Society of Kishacoquillas Valley with the hopes that Edie, now officially a beagle breeder (her first litter was born just two days ago), would find her a loving home.
Kappy sighed. She supposed that Edie had, for she had promptly brought her down for Kappy to foster, promising the dog would only be there for a couple of weeks. Three at most. A family was willing to take the aging dog, but they were moving into a new home and didn’t want to overwhelm her with too many changes.
their exciting side adventure, they head off on their errand to the Kent farm to pick up “one” pig for Jimmy.
“Come on,” Edie yelled as Kappy turned to lock the front door.
She might have gotten the part right about the car horn, but she hadn’t managed to improve her patience level. Maybe that was something they could work on next.
Edie swung her lavender, barely shoulder-length hair to one side and lifted it off her neck. “It’s burning up out here.”
Born with Down syndrome, Jimmy had his limitations, but he was a loving and caring animal owner.
But now he wanted pigs. Miniature pigs. And after a year of steady begging, hints, graphs, and even a pie chart showing the distribution of their farm chores, Jimmy had finally worn Edie down.
“Hurry, Kappy. Hurry!” Jimmy called from the back seat of Edie’s wine-colored sedan.
“We’re going to get my pigs,” he told Kappy as she slid into the passenger side next to Edie.
“Pig,” his sister corrected. She put the car into reverse and backed out of Kappy’s drive. “Singular. One pig.”
I recommend reading.

This Little Piggy is the fourth book in the Kappy King series and I enjoyed being back with Kappy, Edie and her brother Jimmy. Of course there's another mystery or two to solve and guess who's right in the thick of things much against Jack's will. Jack's a detective on the local force and Edie has a thing for him although she was hoping their feelings are mutual. It was fun to watch the changes she made to herself in order to get his attention.

I loved all the references to Kappy's Word-a-Day Calendar and how she fits her new vocabulary words into her conversations or thoughts. There are wonderful descriptions throughout of the farms, the animals - especially the dogs and pigs, and the small town. The story has a good flow and was a quick read. There is a depth to the story with all the clues and details given as they try to solve the murders. Of course, Kappy and Edie always seem to be one step ahead of the police in more ways than one! There is some closure but the story ended with a cliffhanger and too abruptly for me. I loved the colorfulness and details on the cover.

Ms. Lillard is a go-to author for me of both Amish and contemporary romances and mysteries.

This Little Piggy, is a Kappy King cozy mystery, by prolific author, Amy Lillard. Although I've not read the three previous Kappy Kapers, I have read a few other stories by this author so knew the book would be enjoyable. And it is. There's murder afoot in an Amish community right along with friends and neighbors who seem to know everyone else's business, humor, and hints of romance for Kappy and her neighbor Edie too. Several twists to the plot, one in particular that makes me think there are more Kapers to come for the three amateur sleuths. The characters are realistic and likable. Jimmy is an especially sweet character with his love of animals and concern for his friends. Lillard keeps the interest high with tidbits of information regarding marijuana and pigs (and trust me 'this little piggy' is a misnomer when one considers pigs can grow to 800 pounds!!!). This is the fourth Kappy King book and I will be checking out the first three. Readers who enjoy lighthearted whodunits will not want to miss This Little Piggy. I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a positive review. The opinions are my own.

It was so much fun to read another book in this series that features caring, lovable, and inquisitive Kappy King. If there’s a murder or mystery to be solved in their Amish community, Kappy and her English best friend, Edie, are always ready to help solve the case. Their plan to purchase a pig for Edie’s younger brother, Jimmy, quickly becomes another intriguing case for them to solve. But as they become deeply involved in this case, they soon realize that there’s more depth to this mystery than they first imagined. Jimmy has some special challenges in life and his love for animals adds both sweetness and humor all throughout the story.

The mystery is an interesting one, and the author does a great job in the pacing of the story by dropping a new clue at just the right moment. This story takes a couple of unexpected turns, and kept me guessing until the very end of the book.

I have loved every book in this series. Each book can easily be read on their own without having read the others. The themes of faith, family, and friendship weave in and out of every story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This book takes us back to Blue Sky, Pennsylvania to visit my friends Kappy King, and Edie and Jimmy Peachy. I so enjoy visiting with them. You never know what’s going to happen and there’s never a dull moment!

Edie may have left the church and is shunned by some but, that doesn’t stop her neighbor Kappy from hanging out with her and finding herself in the middle of Edie’s predicaments. They are the Amish version of Thelma and Louise!

Jimmy has always had a love for animals. Edie and Jimmy breed Beagles and Jimmy had goats. Now, he wanted pigs.

On their way to pick up a pig, they run into an over-turned truck load of pigs. Pigs where everywhere! Of course, being the animal lover that he is, they stopped to help round the pigs up. That was the beginning of all the things they would encounter…. a dead body, marijuana plants, and a “special pig”. That pig was huge!

Join Kappy, Edie and Jimmy in Blue Sky and find out why that pig was so big. Why was the Amish man murdered? Who murdered him? And what was an Amish family doing raising marijuana?

This Little Piggy is A Kappy King Kaper Book 4 By Amy Lillard If you like a mystery yet you want what you have come to love in the Amish Fiction than Amy Lillard’s Kappy Books may be what your looking for as they are fun, entertaining books. You will get all the mystery you want, and still have the Informative part of the Amish book we love. In this book I found I really liked Jimmy, his love for all animals touched my heart and in particular his desire for a pig. I could visualize Jimmy as he cared for his zoo of animals, and as he walked his pet pig. I also really enjoyed following along with the mystery as Kappy and Edie worked through clues to find who and how this terrible murder happened. Amy Lillard has a wonderful way of creating a entertaining fun mystery that holds your attention with characters that are heartwarming. I look forward to reading more Kappy books. Here we are back to visiting Kappy, Edie and Jimmy. Despite his zoo of animals, Jimmy has finally convinced Edie to allow him to have A pig. (as in one pig). A wrong turn and a wrong farm bring the three to a murder. Who did this to Balthazar? Visiting with Edie, Kappy, and Jimmy is always a treat. Without even trying, these three can stumble across a mystery. Jimmy can be a handful for Edie and Kappy but both love him despite his quirks. Speaking of quirks, Edie is trying to change hers. Will the three survive solving the mystery and the changes? Or will the real murderer go free? While this is a stand alone mystery, reading the first three will help the reader to understand the characters. Plus they are so fun that one will want to read the rest. I hope we get to visit again! I received an advanced copy. A review was not required.

This is A Kappy King Kaper Book 4 but I read it as a stand-alone and still enjoyed it, although I would love to read the previous stories to know more of the background story. This is such a fun Amish cozy mystery that made me smile and brought me joy. I found the characters to be a hoot and couldn’t get enough of. Add in pigs, murder, and mayhem and you will be engaged with the story from the beginning. There are so many fun elements to the story especially when Kappy puts on her amateur detective hat. I especially love that Jimmy is Asperger’s as I have a nephew with this diagnosis and he is so enjoyable. Ms Lillard has done a wonderful job capturing the essence of this cozy. I recommend reading if you are looking for joy in the moment.
I received a complimentary copy. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

This Little Piggy: Kappy King and The Pig Kaper #4
By: Amy Lillard
This is the fourth book in The Kappy King series. It is a fun and cozy Amish Mystery that I really enjoyed. The story is very entertaining and some quirky characters I loved. I found myself laughing a few times. Kappy and Edie are puzzled about a murder that has happened. I really love Jimmy and he is smarter than you think he is. He has his mind set on getting a pig. Will he find the right pig? There are some other mysteries to be solved . Will they find the answers to them?
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I have been waiting for another book to come out in this series and I was definitely not disappointed in the wait. This was one of my favorite books in the series. This will make you laugh even with the murder. Kappy, Edie andJimmy are great characters. There are many twists and turns and lots of laughs. There are lots of animals also. Remember to read the other three books in the series because they are all good and they will help you to understand all about Kappy, Edie and Jimmy. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

With a mystery, a murder, a little bit of romance, runaway dogs, a little weed growing, and special pigs all included in one book, this makes this latest installment of Kappy King quite a fun read.
Making up their own family, I love how the Kappy helps out Edie with Jimmy. Even though Edie is banned Kappy takes Jimmy to church and is interested in his life.
The author, Amy Lillard, keeps you reading and wondering about who did it till the end. You know, the end is when I finally figured it out.
I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Jimmy loves animals & REALLY LOVES pigs. FINALLY, Jimmy convinces his sister to let him purchase a piglet. Little do they know what awaits them the day they pick up
Jimmy's piggy. A dead body!! Craziness abounds after Kappy gets involved, helping Jimmy & his sister, as they TRY solving the mystery around this shocking murder.

This Little Piggy is a fun, intriguing read. A real page turner, you wont want to put it down till the end! Fun read for all ages!
