The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe is a brilliant collection of some of his best-known The Tell Tale Heart (a murder's haunting guilt), The Cask of Amontillado (a story of brilliant revenge), and The Fall of the House of Usher (an ancient house full of very dark secretes). Also included in this collection are The Mask of the Red Death (horrors of 'the Plague'), and the most famous of all his The Raven (a lover's decline into madness). Best read in a dimly-lit room with the curtains drawn, Poe's brilliant works come to life in darkly thrilling ways in this Manga Classic adaptation.
The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.
Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.
The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.
tl;dr A fairly faithful adaptation featuring several different artists with appropriately scary artwork. A great way to introduce newer readers to Poe's works.
Thoughts I've never read the Manga Classics series before, but I always enjoy a good Poe adaptation, so I jumped at the chance to check this out. I'll refrain from reviewing the stories themselves, since it's Poe, and you probably already know if you like his work or not. (But if you don't know, Fall of the House of Usher is always a strong recommend from me.)
This book is a collection of some of his most famous works (Telltale Heart, The Raven, Cask of Amontillado, Masque of Red Death, and Fall of the House of Usher), each illustrated by a different artist. Style varies across the board, although all of the pieces have been adapted very faithfully. Telltale Heart leans into heavy use of blacks, making the nighttime sequences feel very ominous. The Raven is appropriately dreamlike in nature, with some really cool angles in the layout. Cask of Amontillado's characters are highly expressive, especially as the story goes on. Masque of Red Death is probably what most people think of when you say "manga style," with more use of tones and delicate lines that fit right in with the decadent atmosphere of the story. Fall of the House of Usher has some heavy and sometimes messy inks that really nail the gothic feeling of the story, and remind me quite a bit of a lot of the novel->comic books I used to read as a kid. A handful of character design sketches and layout thumbnails are also included, which are always a treat for art fans.
Overall, this book feels like a really great introduction to some of Poe's most famous works, with very accessible and moody art across the board.
Thanks to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for a review copy! All thoughts in this review are my own.
God I love Manga Classics!! Especially when I get to see some of my favorite classics in a manga art style and format <3
The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe includes The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Fall of the House of Usher.
If you love Edgar Allan Poe's works to begin with, you should definitely try this one out if you like manga/anime! It stays true to the gothic format even in the artstyle!! It's been a while since I've read these stories but Poe is one of my favorite authors and I often read his over again every few years so this was a great arc to recieve!!
However, if you're new to Poe and his works; he's known for his gothic and macabre writing style with elements of gruesome horror, phantasma, and psychological horror.
Either way I highly recommend this if you're into gothic, macabre stories in manga format!
Disclaimer: I received Manga Classics: The Stories of Edgar Allan Poe as an ARC, and I'm voluntarily leaving this review.
As a Poe fan I knew that I absolutely needed to read this when I saw it on Netgalley. I was lucky enough to get approved for a copy to review. I’ve read o e other Manga Classic before and that was the Romeo and Juliet one which I really enjoyed so I had high hopes going into this one. I felt like the artwork was amazing and it went really well with the stories being told. I’m hoping to pick up a few more Manga Classics in the future since the two that I have read so far have been wonderful.
I have always wanted to read Poe’s work. And, when I saw the manga on Netgalley, I just could not resist myself from requesting it. The book has only four famous stories by Poe. I liked the graphics but felt that it was a little bit confusing for me as I am reading manga for the very first time. And the stories had been able to create a little bit of an atmosphere of horror. After reading this, I am definitely going to read all of his works.
This graphic novel was a fun way to read some of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous short stories and poems. The text (from what I can tell) seems unabridged, and so includes the full text with manga-style illustrations.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and UDON Entertainment for the opportunity to read and review this manga.
I am a big Edgar Allan Poe fan - while I do have mixed feelings regarding his life choices, the man had a way with the macabre that few other authors came remotely close to it. And I like that darkness, that eerie feeling and atmosphere.
This manga adapts some of his most popular works like The Raven, The Fall of the House of Usher and The Tell-Tale Heart and it's a great way to introduce people to his works. Reading Poe is beautiful, however some of his short-stories are not easy, which is why having the visual support that the manga offers makes his stories more accessible.
The art styles captures the maddening feels of Poe's stories. It's not extremely spooky, but it's not far from it. A great read.

Lately I've been interested in graphic novels, so when I saw this book, I was very intrigued and I'm really glad I had the chance to read it. It is an easy read as there are several short stories in the book, and of course it's Edgar Allan Poe, so you know they're good. I absolutely loved the illustrations and the style really fits the dark vibes of the stories. I really like how this book makes these stories accessible to more people that might not have read them in their original form before. All in all a great book that I would recommend to everyone. Thanks to NetGalley and Udon Entertainment for providing me with a copy.
I admit to not being in the target audience for Manga (grandkids are, though), but I love Poe in any form or type of imaginative presentation. Nothing like true classic horror! According to several young folks this presentation is very much the thing and they got this granny to buy and gift them as soon as they had read major parts on my laptop when they were visiting. The book is atmospherically illustrated in simple line drawings that still manage to convey the appropriate atmosphere. I requested and received a temporary electronic copy on Adobe Digital Editions from UDON Entertainment via NetGalley. Thank you!
OK this one was amazing, fans of horror manga stories will love this one, you get several short stories, and the stories are explain just right, the drawing is not that childish, but much more mature and kind of maddening, yes I loved this one.
Highly recommend this one for fans of Junji Ito stories, its easily a 5 stars read, and besides the great drawings is a fantastical way to introduce Edgar Allan Poe to people that don’t know him.
Thank you NetGalley for the free ARC, and this is honest opinion.
As someone who’s been fond of Poe’s writing for many years, it is such an interesting thing to see them taken into a different light. Graphic Novel, Manga or any other version is to some degree also interpretation. Interpretation of the artist in a sense. And I think it’s been done in a very good way. Poe’s writing and the art both seem to work well together and it was a delight to read them. Thanks to the publishing team and Netgalley for making it possible for me to read this as an ARC.
Stunning collection of manga and Poe adapted stories! This is definitely a unique and fun way to experience a lot of the creepy Poe tales that we've come to know and love over the year. October is a great time to dive deeper into some of these macabre stories and fully embrace all the spooky, haunting vibes. There's some luscious language and great artwork!
The horror of Edgar Allan Poe translates very well to the graphic novel format in this very well illustrated retelling of the classic tales from the haunted pen of Poe. They are particularly good for someone just coming to the stories and act as a great introduction to the tales.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion! I adore any stories by Edgar Allen Poe, so to see them in manga form was absolutely amazing! Any fans of the Manga Classics series is going to fall in love with the art style and spooky tone of this manga.
A great rendition of the classic tales by Poe. The graphics are well done and the stories are easy to read and follows. This is a great book for teens and adults. A great way to introduce the classic tales of Poe! Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
4⭐️ This illustrator did a wonderful job bringing Edgar Allan Poe’s stories to life. The drawings were perfect and exactly how i imagined the stories when i read them. i wish i had this book when i needed to read these for English class 😅.
I enjoyed the artwork in this book and reading some of Edgar Allan Poe's stories for the first time! I always enjoy how quick the reads are and that they're easy to go through in a sitting and that I get to enjoy the lovely artwork in the process.
I really enjoyed this!! I was able to relive some of my favourite Poe stories, and gain visuals for some that I had not read. and it was fun too practice reading from right to left for when I read more Japanese stuff.
I loved this book! Prior to this, I only knew of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven, but I had no idea how that could be turned into a Manga. Once I read that story, it made so much sense and I loved it! All the other stories in this Manga were also super well done and very fun to read.
