Lonely Apocalypse #2

Still Left Out By the System

Rate this book
Imagine being the only human left on an Earth occupied by monsters, aliens, and worse. Sounds terrible? Well. . .it’s not so bad when you are an introverted battle junkie like me.

Honestly, I was almost starting to appreciate being left behind while everyone else was given the chance to prepare for the mess Earth had gotten itself into. On a side note, it turns out I'm pretty good at hunting monsters. Though dragons and such are a bit out of my league. Just a bit.

I survived dozen-something kobolds that wanted me dead, and now it's time to pay back their leader. Unfortunately for the poor doggies, I have made some allies. Allies they’re gonna hate.

There's just one tiny detail that bothers me. My talking cat companion is hiding something. Something big. Something that has the potential to make deadly monsters the least of my worries. . .

Series info: Lonely Apocalypse 2: Still Left Out by the System is the second volume in the thrilling LitRPG series. Fans of the RPG genre will find a sophisticated progression system with Levels, Ranks, and Quests built upon compelling logic. As our hero seeks magical powers via Concepts—special abilities based on each individual’s personal traits—he grows not only in power but as a person, too. Follow Lex as he uncovers shocking truths about himself and his home planet alike. Why did the enigmatic System call it Mirror Earth, anyway? The answers lie in this latest addition to the Post-Apocalypse genre!

Well that ending was… silly? Somehow makes the entire series kinda worse.

Progression is still bad (yay another whole day has passed) but the POVs did get better, only remember a couple of them. Story is still kind of going nowhere and nothing really happens.

Mediocre story that goes nowhere.

I was excited to see what happened when he finally left the dungeon. And what was it, he goes right back in. At this point the story is railroaded forward for a very boring, very obvious ride. This is a long wait for a boring story to get to five pages of twist in the end. I expected more from the author, and am very disappointed by this entry. Three stars just for the series, the book itself is a one star.

trash super trash

Horrible book that gets to much in depth with the magic system and how it’s works. I say 80% of this book is about how the system works, which is what the first book did also like come on man then they try to hook you with a pointless ending. Because now there time travelers.

Sad conclusion to my interest

Wow. Did this whole book concept fall apart or what. Two books worth of effort by the MC and it's all squandered with a pathetic deus ex machina. Will NOT be continuing.

Its mostly great.

Honestly until the final chapter this was a 5 star review, but that final chapter managed to take a lot of the things that I really looked forward to watching develop into things that I no longer care about in the series. Overall the story was very interesting and well written but the ending just destroyed the magic of the story for me.

Still Left Out By the System (Lonely Apocalypse #2) by Constantin Step

A sequel that compounds its predecessor's flaws while squandering narrative momentum through mechanical exposition and devastating plot revelations.

Structural Problems: This continuation suffers from severe pacing dysfunction, devoting approximately 80% of its content to system mechanics exposition while actual plot progression remains minimal across 423 pages. The narrative covers roughly a single day of in-world time, with Lex returning to the same hospital dungeon that dominated the first volume, creating a claustrophobic sense of narrative stagnation rather than expansion.

Mechanical Overload:
The book drowns readers in statistical calculations, Concept explanations, and secondary attribute mathematics that interrupt narrative flow every few pages. These technical diversions serve the author's apparent fascination with system complexity rather than reader engagement or story advancement.

Climactic Misjudgment:
The final chapter revelation—that Lex died in the original truck accident and now inhabits his crush's brother's body via organ donation—retroactively undermines two books' worth of character development and reader investment through deus ex machina plotting.

Major Characters:

Lex Lurker (Protagonist): His arc focuses on completing dungeon objectives, developing Concepts, and forming alliances with cat-like beings. However, the final revelation transforms his entire journey into potential possession by an external entity, fundamentally altering reader understanding of his agency and identity. The character shows competence in combat but remains reactive to circumstances rather than driving plot development.

Ciesta (Talking Cat Companion): Serves as exposition delivery mechanism and mysterious guide figure. Her character development revolves around withholding crucial information about Lex's true nature while providing system tutorials. The revelation of her deeper knowledge positions her as potentially manipulative rather than protective.

Cat-Race Allies: Newly introduced characters representing the first non-hostile intelligent beings Lex encounters. Their function appears primarily tactical—providing combat assistance against kobold forces—while establishing the broader "cats versus dogs" conflict dynamic within the world's ecosystem.

Minor Characters:

Kobold Leader: The primary antagonist whose defeat serves as the volume's main objective. Limited character development beyond representing obstacle to be overcome.

Various Kobolds: Multiple perspective shifts to soon-to-die kobold characters add page count without meaningful contribution to plot or theme, representing poor editorial judgment in narrative focus.

Lisa (Mentioned): Lex's original crush whose brother's body may now serve as Lex's vessel, creating disturbing implications for potential romantic development that the text doesn't adequately address.

Assessment: The volume represents a catastrophic example of middle-book syndrome, where authors mistake complexity for depth and revelation for resolution. The body-swapping twist reduces what appeared to be character growth into external manipulation, while the obsessive focus on system mechanics suggests the author prioritizes game design over storytelling craft.

Too many confusing stats. Lots of rambling talk between main character and his companion. Two books to complete one dungeon and a little bit of suprise at the end of book two. Not worth wasting time on the next one...

Plot error

Was Lisa next to lex real body? When everyone was taken? Story talked about her future mother in law. Which would be awkward if she was next to her brother.

The book could have certainly used a: What has happened before.
What happened before: Lex Lurker gets hit by a truck while saving a girl he has a crush on. After spending much time in a coma he wakes up just as the system which just absorbed earth decides he is dead and not worth incorporating.
What happens in this book: He gets stronger as usual for litrpg books, meets some of the other people outside of the dungeon (some sort of cat race). Kills a lot of kobolds (which are some sort of dog race). Then it goes off the rails: Seems Lex Lurker died when hit by the truck, and several of his organs are donated to the brother of the girl he has a crush on. So now in possession of her brothers body, another entity is trying to enter this new earth through this same body...
The first book has a few language issues, as expected by someone whose primary language is not English. In those terms this was a much better book. He enlisted someone else to proof read the book.
As for the story, he completed the dungeon that he started in but then in the last 20 pages or so, went out to left field and kept going.
Another positive over the 1st book is he mostly dropped the weird math of secondary attributes, it still shows up but only 2x in 423 pages instead of every 3-4 pages.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Wow, just wow, cliffhanger and a mind fuck at the end

I have been enjoying the characters, story, theme and progress as Lex discovers his new reality. Plus some possible minor possession that he should fight.
At least he has Ciesta beside him guiding him along as he strives to learn about the system and survive the challenges of presents him. Meeting some new beings changes the dynamic a bit as we see a common theme in the eternal war between cats and dogs!
Lex also starts to experiment with his concepts more and works towards his class requirements. Then embraces his new class and concepts as he learns to use them and tries to develop his personal fighting style.

And the ending reveal was a big surprise!

I was drawn into these first two books and had no problem reading past the translation or print errors.

Author's note holds the key

So from the author's note, this is part 2 of what is essentially a single book.

Again I really enjoyed the flow of the story and the system of powers. It had a much better flow than part 1 honestly, and the Concept system is really interesting.

I do think some things could have been explained a bit more, and there were a couple of places where the level ups/skill ups were wrong or repeated.

The language translation was a bit of a struggle but not in a way that made it difficult to understand. It was more "I know what's being said, that's just an odd way of saying it".

Disappointed to see this series may or may not continue. Especially on such a cliff hanger! Really wanted to know more about the Concepts and other parts of the system that weren't unlocked yet.

solid book

I would have never guessed that the writer was a non-native English speaker. I found the book entertaining and pretty well paced. I only have two complaints, the game mechanics are needlessly complex. I appreciate that the author is being very thoughtful about game system, but in this case, less is more.

The second issue is it really makes no sense for someone who is keeping a low profile to randomly team up with strangers and bring them to his home base. Especially, when these strangers happen to be alien invaders.

Pretty mediocre in my opinion. While I kinda liked the first book, this book hardly improves on it, making it very "meh". The author tries to blend litRPG elements with cultivation, but it's kind of weak. Most times wih cultivation/Dao concepts the protagonist needs some insight to advance said concept. Here just using it is leveling it up. This feels like a cultivation "very light mode" kind of story and does not give a lot of depth.

The ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger, so be warned. I wonder if I'll pick up the third book in this series.

After enjoying - with caveats - the first book in this series, I was rather excited to dive immediately into the second novel. However, I was left extremely disappointed. The flaws in the first book remained prevalent - a lack of focus, hyperfixation on the stats and mechanics of the world/game/etc, and a complete lack of progress. However, the flaws stood out much more in this book, where *literally almost nothing happens* overall, and it frankly took away from some of the good work with characters and creativity.

acceptable

It needs another proofreading pass. Simple, obvious mistakes that should have been caught. Not *unreadable*, just a bit sloppy.

The narrative is challenging to read because the system is complex. Maybe too complex. And by comparison to the first book where we got a glimpse of people *in* the tutorial, this never visited those people. Making me think the author changed directions.

I don’t know. It wasn’t awful. I *did* finish it. But it got a bit weird.

Excellent Series

Was an interesting storyline that I found intriguing I look forward to the continuation of this series as the way the 2nd book ended in a bad way leaving to many questions unresolved and seeing that it will take a few more books to tie current plot up means ill probably have to wait years to finish ( books like this make only want to read completed series .

Some errors may occur

My biggest complaint is the frequent grammatical and lexical errors. The errors were not so bad as to make the text difficult to understand, but were distracting.
The story was engaging and the MC shows growth. Sometimes the secondary characters are a little flat, but not bad. There is a nice twist at the end, it shouldn't come as a surprise if you paid attention, but is done pretty well. Tom out

can’t complain. definitely binged it

While the end twists were foreshadowed really hard so I guessed it. I was still on the edge of my seat. Nice progression but these types of books rarely make it to or past 8. If the story line continues like this it’s not going to get far. Hope Constantin ramps it up soon! But overall a good book. Just sad I read it in 2 days!

Pretty decent story overall. Liked the story, though towards the end it got a bit heavy for my tastes, and while we learned the reason for the system acting differently with this character, I don't think it was handled well, but that's part of the fun I guess, having authors do what the reader doesn't expect. :) Anyhow, decent story, and a pretty good read, especially if you read the first one.

KU Review

Fun and silly with definite dark undertones. Certainly separates itself from the first novel with the interactions and direction it seems to be heading. Larger story starts to materialize.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Fun, but still overtalks a bit

I did enjoy this story, but sometimes the narration dwelled too much on the different options or choices the MC had to choose from. It was a lot of discussion. I'm sure some people enjoy that....i kinda skimmed that and moved on to the action and interactions. Those are done excellently. Fun book. Can't wait to see where the author takes it next!

Well what an imotional roller coaster you think the books going one way fights advancement etc while its actually some thing else happening in the background, a very cool concept and i cant wait for book 3 to come out and continue the journey .

Great continuation

I really enjoyed the second installment of this story. More of the background is revealed and the plot is really starting to come together. The characters are well written and the action scenes are excellent. Well worth taking the time to read.

An amazing read.

I absolutely love the twists and turns in this book as well as the first one. I couldn't put it down. The changes in emotions as I read was absolutely fantastic. I look forward to reading any future continuations.

interesting read

Good continuation of the first book. I’m not exactly sure what to think of the ending as it raises nearly as many questions as it it answers. The story itself is decent. Very ‘crunchy’ as far as stats and stat gains.

another Void litrpg

Very similar to The Winter Wolf and other cultivation litrpgs. I feel the pacing is a little fast but it is nice to see a litrpg story with both cultivators and players.

Very bad

Word vomit. The author tries to be funny and fails. Concepts of a story that seems directionless. Kept trying to find a flow to the story but it's just not there very disappointing.
