4/5: this was such a refreshing thriller to read. I read the first two books in the Claire Wolfe series last year and regret not reading this right after “You Made Me.” This wasn’t nearly as dark as its predecessor, and I appreciate that it wasn’t overly twisty with countless red herrings all building up a big reveal. The big reveal, I should’ve seen coming, but this was a really juicy read. Can’t wait for what’s next
An exciting addition to the series! Love the new characters and their interactions - they were so witty and entertaining. The ending was satisfying and brilliant! Can't wait for more.
I received this as an advanced copy in return for my honest review, and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Highly recommended.
Wow! This book is so good! The author keeps getting better and better. I have enjoyed every book in the series. The characters are well written. The plot is well thought out and has several surprising twists. I really like this series and this author!
I received a digital ARC of this book. I would recommend it. This is my honest and unsolicited review.
This book continues the saga of Claire Wolfe’s fight against Apex. Claire has moved to a job at the FBI. The twists and turns continue to the last page. Plan on reading all day in this engrossing book.
It was a great series that was quick and easy to read. I wasn't sure that I wanted to keep going but of course I needed to know how it ended!! Would recommend for vacation or extra time lying around.
Considering this was the third book in the series, I was hoping to see something new from this author. The premise of an female assassin who went to such dark and twisted lengths to achieve her goals had me hooked. But then the author reverted to what I will now call the dead horse, because they sure like to beat this plot into the ground.
Narcissistic mother? Check. Although this time it was Rob's mother and given his history and knowledge of her trying to gaslight him to get her own way it was both remarkable that he would be that gullible, and unbelievable that he would fall for her schemes to the point he was unconsciously choosing her over Claire and the life they were supposed to be building together.
Two supposedly well-trained FBI agents doing stupid things? Check and check. I mean seriously? Both Rob and Claire know that their lives are at stake, yet they are constantly leaving their firearms upstairs when at home instead of keeping them on them? Yeah, its annoying to constantly have a sidearm strapped to you, especially in the one place where you should be safe, but given the alternative?
Then again, I don't know what I expected from Rob considering there came a point in the story where it was absolutely vital to both his survival and Claire's that he disappear, yet not only is her former colleague Jess showing up at one of the most obvious places every day (something I was very surprised the killer missed), but he also couldn't help himself from tagging along when it came time for Claire to actually execute the plan.
Finally we get to what appears to be the big reveal. Something that I know the author intended as a shocking twist, but was so preposterous that it angered me more than shocked me. The second reveal later on to me was more shocking than that one was. But alas, the second reveal made it clear that this author is not yet done beathing the horse, so if there are more stories within this series, I doubt I will read them. However, if I see a new series, or a new standalone novel from this author, I would probably give that a chance.
I would give this book a 4 star review and would read this series again!
This is the third and theoretically last installment of this series and I have to say, I really did enjoy them all and each of them had me guessing and I usually was never fully right. I liked how this book seemed to be something new, with the FBI killings/bombing and the assassins, but yet it still tied into Apex, whom they thought they finally got rid of in the second book. I thought the idea of the group having separate "heads" if you will was really interesting and reminded me of hydra from agents of shield. Cutting one head down always has more growing in its place and you can never seem to get rid of them completely. I was really shocked the "daddy" or leader of this apex group was Tom, Rob's longtime partner. I really didn't suspect him ever so was really shocked to find out he was behind it all. Agent Massoud I could kinda see but was glad it wasn't him. I'm glad her and Rob were finally able to get married and have a "happy ending" after everything they went through. I have to say that he did annoy me though throughout this book with the whole mom issue. I get wanting to have relationships with your parents, especially when there's been a falling out, but at some point I feel like you have to choose your partner over your parents, especially if they make them feel uncomfortable in their own home. Wondering if there will be a forth book as it ended on a cliffhanger and the hopefully last "head" of the Apex group, being the Senator. IF there would be another book, I would hope it would be the last so it's not drug out too much and loses how good of a series it's been so far.

Well this is the third and it was supposed to be of three but at the end it says Claire Wolf will be back so I guess not. To be honest I really got annoyed with this book so not sure I'll bother to read the fourth. Firstly, the first two books were all about Claire's evil mother, who sort of came around and then fell in love and now everything's sunshine and rainbows between her and her mother, even though for years her mother blamed her for her sister's death and so on and so forth. So now Claire doesn't have an evil mum, the author had to create a different evil mum, so he chose Rob's mother, who tries to break Claire and Rob up. Which is so far so boring but then Claire keeps whining about it and you feel like saying, 'Hmm, remember how he stood by you with all your mum crap and you can't do the same for him?' Claire and all the rest of the hotshot FBI agents are still all incredibly stupid, not seeing things right under their noses and lastly, the author once again saves a shocking twist for almost the very end so the characters find out who the baddie is (usually by phone) and have to rush somewhere to try and save their friends. I guess my issue with these books are they are very repetitive and derivative. There is nothing shocking about the twist because you are expecting not just the twist but how it goes. Oh and the bad guy in this is just preposterous.

Claire can't keep from being the center of attention with every discovery of a dead body, serial killer or some elaborate plot. Her innocence gets questioned so often that she even questions whether she could be a killer. Her mom treated her cruelly. The poor girl, now woman, was shown no motherly love. All her mother could do was degrade and slander her, calling her a murderer. Then, the one person who'd shown any kind of love toward her, wound up being a psycho. Her dad caused her whole world to come crashing down on her. It's a wonder that Claire survived life with her parents. In some ways, Her head is screwed up. Amazingly, she didn't succumb to her mother's torture or become the killer her father really thought she was. It's great that her mom has turned her life around and she can help to ease some of the pain she caused Claire. Healing is a slow process. BUT...Her dad's psycho dealings are the gift that keeps on giving. Unfortunately, she can't give them back or return them to the store. She has to destroy them, one bad gift at a time. Who knows how long this process will take. Hopefully not the rest of her life Claire has some spunk. I think she will weather the next homocide that she gets entangled in.
This might just be my favorite of the series—despite some unhinged moments.
Let’s get this out of the way: I did not need Rob’s mom in this story. She took up way too much page time for someone who added so little. That said, this book felt more streamlined than the previous two—less bogged down by unnecessary detail, which was a welcome change.
I actually didn’t mind diving into the villain’s backstory this time. It added to the tension instead of dragging the pace, and it gave the twist more weight—which genuinely surprised me (finally!). Claire continued to shine, using her mind to solve cases, stay one step ahead, and protect the people she loves.
One of the best parts of this installment was seeing her surrounded by a self-made family—a circle of trust that felt earned. What still grated a bit was how often people doubted her, even though she’s always right. That repetition is starting to wear thin.
The ending mostly worked for me—aside from Rob’s mom again—but I liked how this chapter of Claire’s life wrapped up. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Jamie Millen book without leaving a door open for more… though sadly, I haven’t seen signs of a fourth yet.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You Are Next by Jamie Millen is the third book in the Claire Wolfe series and no, I didn't read the first two. Somehow I missed that part that this is the third book and when I realized I was halfway through. Did I miss something? I don't know. Did I feel that I am missing something - NO! So it can easily be read as stand-alone! I loved it! I am not a massive fan of FBI books but I liked this one! This was different. Not a standard plot and the characters were just fantastic! The plot twist, oh my, my jaw dropped!
Claire just started her career in the FBI when twisted serial kiIIer hunts FBI agents. Her fiancé, Special Agent Robert Cline nearly survived one of the attacks but it doesn't mean he was saved! Claire can feel this is not clean but no one believes so she takes things in her own hand... it's like a sign of a death wish... If you think that things are complicated, wait for her soon to be a mother in law appear on her doorstep!
If you love the series, start with the first one, If you don't care, just grab this one as this one is good!
This series doesn’t disappoint! Claire started her career in law enforcement with one goal in mind- find her sister’s murderer! She waited years until she finally secured a a Homicide position back in her home town of Newburgh. She found her sister’s JP killer but along the way reconnected with FBI Agent Rob Cline- moving with him to the FBI,assigned to the the same unit. Both Claire and Rob are committed to ensuring the group who muttered here sister are identified and shut down - Have the cut off the head of the snake or just one of its offspring ?
I highly recommend this series to psychological suspense and crime procedural junkies. Enjoy
I really enjoyed the first in the series but Hoopla didn’t have #2 so I jumped to 3. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much, but it was obvious I had missed out by not reading #2. This seemed a bit disjointed, jumping from past to present and character to character with no warning. The narrator was great, but couldn’t make up for the confusion in the story. Maybe confusion is the wrong word…unrealistic might be better, especially where Rob’s mother was concerned. I will find #2 and will definitely continue with the series.
Yet again another good, keep you on your toes, entertaining, who done did it book. This last series was a shocker, did not see the twist at the end until it came and gone. This whole series was fun, fast pace, easy to read and very good. I love Claire Wolfe and all her detective skills and work. If you have not heard of Detective Claire Wolfe series please get them, you will not be disappointed, well I wasn’t, they kept my attention and I had fun reading them all.
Compelling read. Many characters to keep the reader guessing. It's only at the end you'll receive a clue. Don't worry this book is a stand alone. Although, future series may come to light. Any how this book will take you on a rollercoaster of immersion. Hold on to your seats. Thank you Jamie Millen for this GREAT way to spend a couple hours of who dun it? PottsvillePA_FRI; 05202022.
I am very hesitant to read trilogies in general because I typically find the second and third books not as good as the first one and that is disappointing. That is absolutely not the case with the Clair Wolfe thrillers. All three of these books were amazingly written, well planned and thought out and exceeded my expectations. I would give this book more than five stars if I could. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. A must read!
Each book in the series can be read independently, but the story flows better if you read in order. In this book, Claire has moved to VA to join her beau, and the FBI, when a bomb blast literally rocks her world. APEX is back!! A ruthless assassin, an FBI investigator who has Claire in his sights…and the return of Rob’s estranged mother…all make for another heart-pumping book. Watch out bad guys…the Wolfe is on the hunt!
This was another really good book in the Claire Wolfe series. The author doesn't spend too much time recapping what happened in previous books, but gets right to the fast-paced action that runs throughout this book. Millen does a good job with character development and storytelling. There were so many characters in this book that it was hard to pinpoint which character(s) was/were involved with APEX until the very end.
The trilogy, starring Claire, is phenomenal. It has been a while since I've read an author I truly enjoy and Mr. Millen certainly kept me hanging on the edge of my seat. The plot twists are extremely well crafted and every turn is a new possibility. I'm not usually surprised by endings, but this series has me hooked. I can't wait for the next one! I hope you're writing quickly Mr. Millen 😁
Wow! This book is so good! This author is getting better and better! I have enjoyed every book in this series. The characters are well written and the plot is well thought out. I really like this series and this author! I received a digital ARC of this book and this is my honest and unsolicited review.
I have really enjoyed these books, can't wait for more. Audible really brings the characters to life. I would recommend this series to all. I don't tell what is in the books I read. That's for you to read and find out. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Off to my next adventure.
Just when you think you’ll get a breath of fresh air, Jamie Millen does it again! The chevron appearance so early made it very clear that this book would be just as mysterious as the last 2. The violence continued and the gore more serious. I have found myself having trouble in the past following organized crime, but the author did a great job lining out the plot, making us fall in love with Claire Wolfe all over again, be protective over Rob, make us hate his mother, and once again blindsiding us with the killer. The end reveals there must be a 4th book! I can’t wait to read it!
Another excellent edition. Alpha, Apex, Senators, FBI all moving and shaking around. I’m told there will be another Claire Wolfe, however I’m concerned as it’s been a couple of years now since book three. I’m not going into detail, you need to read this series yourself. If you enjoy police procedural, FBI involvement, psychological thrillers then this is for you.
This was the best book of the series and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next!! I knew one of the characters was shady in the first two books but I thought maybe I was wrong. Well turns out I got it right!!! I wish there was another book since it ends on a cliff hanger. They need to make this series into movies asap! I really enjoyed this series and I loved Claire!
