This book had the heart of a fairytale and the epic elements of fantasy. Elves, fae, trolls, sirens, dragons, curses and gods, an immersive world—it was amazing! Indeed, this is a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, a fairytale I’m only familiar in name. After finishing Daylight’s Curse, I finally looked it up and I could recognize some plot points. That’s how I like retellings to be—original, but still recognizable. I like seeing the small nods to the original tale. Those loose retellings that are marketed as such just to attract readers? They’re not really retellings for me. So fans of the fairytale, please read this. This is such a treat!
People who don’t know the fairytale, please read this book as well! It was such a beautiful standalone fantasy romance, with family and love at its heart. The bonds between Sabrena, her siblings and her friend reminded me so much of the one between me and my siblings. And her slowburn romance with Kiran was…*squeals* *chef’s kiss*. It was like a more romantic and epic fantasy version of Beauty and the Beast, if you can believe that. (In fact, in my research, I found out Beauty and the Beast is a descendant of East of the Sun, West of the Moon.) Kiran is the perfect blend of broody and sweet, protective and supportive—and he’s gorgeous! As for Sabrena, I loved her good heart and courage to do whatever it takes for the people she loves. I also admired her ability to keep an open mind and not let prejudices dictate her opinion of others, like with the fae and trolls.
This is a New Adult novel, but the steamy content is more romantic than detailed, so YA fans could definitely enjoy this too!

I wanted to love this book, I really did. When the author announced the preorder incentive I ran to preorder the ebook because I couldn’t miss the opportunity. I’m so thankful to Tyffany Hackett for being so kind and generous.
Unfortunately, I did not love this book. But I think it was my fault.
No, I’m not saying it just to sound nice. People who know me know how honest and plain-spoken I am with my reviews: if I don’t enjoy a book I say it. But this time is different. The problem wasn’t the book per se, it was the timing. My timing.
I started reading this book a few days after graduating, and I shouldn’t have done that because I was in a significant slump. I didn’t feel like reading most of the time but I kept forcing myself, and that’s the worst thing you can do when reading a book. I should’ve dropped it, waited a few days, and then maybe pick it up again, but I didn’t and that’s why I wasn’t able to really enjoy it.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate this book. I liked the world-building, I liked the characters, and I liked the plot (I did not know the original fairytale). But none of it really stood out to me. And while I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed this story a lot more if I had read it without being in a slump, I also think some things could’ve been done better (beware of spoilers): first of all, the world-building was a bit confusing, and it was also too vast for such a short standalone (the paperback is 398 pages long). I also didn’t completely enjoy how things between Sabrena and Kiran developed: they were a cute couple, there’s no denying it, but I think their relationship should’ve developed more slowly. The first time they meet, Kiran is already cupping her chin and telling her how she’s perfect even without magic, and that was a little bit too soon for me. That kind of physical intimacy has to come later in the story for me to find it realistic and enjoyable. Sabrena was a nice MC but sometimes she made me so mad: the worst thing is that we never discover her full potential. Later in the story, we discover she’s actually a Siren, but this thing doesn’t get explored! She keeps telling herself and everyone she doesn’t know how to use her Siren powers, but she does absolutely nothing to try to learn! She even has a book with an entire chapter about Siren, and Kiran literally leaves her a note telling her to read that chapter, but she never does! The final trials were also a bit of a letdown: they overcome them way too quickly, and especially the Soul trial was so disappointing because Sabrena is told it will be the most difficult trial of them all, but in the end, she’s not even the slightest affected by it. Another thing that bothered me was Bleiz: he was such a nice character, and his betrayal at the end would’ve been such a good plot twist if it weren’t for the fact that we don’t see him for 80% of the book. I really wanted to witness Sabrena develop a bond with him and Damara, but that never really happens because Bleiz and Damara are always away patrolling, so when we discover Bleiz had betrayed them all it doesn’t hit as deep as it should’ve. Last but not least, the way she manages to kill the Sorceress at the end was way too easy, considering she’s fighting against someone with godly powers!
There were also things I enjoyed of course: Kiran and Sabrena’s trauma bonding, their initial banter, the way she acted towards him when he was in dragon form, the Eventide Rose, Kiran in general as a character (even though sometimes he was too cinnamon-rolly even for me), witnessing Sabrena grow into a fierce woman.
To wrap up my thoughts, Daylight’s Curse is a book that didn’t stand out to me. I can see why so many people would enjoy it though, and I encourage everyone to give it a chance if only to support an indie author that absolutely deserves to be supported.

DAYLIGHT’S CURSE will sweep you away into a beautiful fairytale. If you’re familiar with the story of East of the Sun and West of the Moon—of which Daylight’s Curse is a retelling—you’ll enjoy recognizing elements of that story revisited by the author in an entirely new lens. Family and love are the beating heart of this book. I absolutely adored Sebrena’s relationship with her siblings and her slow-burn romance with Kiran. Their story was sweet and magical, the kind you can enjoy with a warm cup of coffee and count on to give you all the warm and fuzzy feelings.
The author also did an incredible job with her world-building. Daylight’s Curse is a standalone, but the world is so rich with mythology and species—we have elves, fae, sirens, trolls, dragons, just to name some—that I would absolutely love exploring more of it! I definitely recommend this book to all lovers of fairytale retellings, especially the lighter, sweeter kind (though rest assured, there’s no shortage of action and betrayal in this one!). While the book is marketed as a New Adult and does have a mildly steamy scene between the main couple, I do think it can easily be enjoyed by a YA audience. So…no excuses! Read this beauty!

Me gustó muchoooo 🤧💛, hubiese preferido que fuese duologia para explorar ciertas cosas pero igual estuvo bien, Kiran y Sabrena los amooooo, aparte el siendo un dragon o sea como no lo voy a amar, me encantó el mundo, es pequeño, nada complicado, diría que una fantasía/lectura ligera💕 y los personajes amé, aunque también me gustaría que me mostraran más de ellos🤧 (ojalá haga libros de los hermanos jaja los amé 🫦) en fin, me encantó 🥹 (pd. otra cosa que amé, es que ambos protagonistas tienen más de 200 años😎)

A wonderfully, whimsical fairytale. I really loved this retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. It had all the great parts of a great fantasy fairytale retelling: Swoony love, unbreakable friendships, and conquering your fears to save the day! I highly recommend you all check out this lovely standalone novel.

Daylight's Curse is a standalone novel and is a New Adult Fantasy Romance retelling.
Book Cover: 5* - Ok, obviously I'm going to gush about this cover because it is GORGEOUS! I love this artist, she makes amazing character illustrations. I think this cover evokes a bit of mystery of what's to come in the story. I mean, elf protagonist, a magical rose, AND a dragon? Ok sign me up.
Summary/Tagline: 5* - Trolls, curses, and dragon shifters. This story sounded like one heck of my kind of fantasy with a promise of don't touch me or doom us romance haha! In fact, I was already in at the words Mald Magicae, so let's go!
Characters: 5* - We follow Sabrena, an elven woman who is over a hundred years old, scarred, and a rare elf with no magic. Attacked at a young age by a troll, she has lived ever since in terror of when the next troll attack will happen, while being harassed and bullied by the people from her own town. Struggling with trying to survive with her large family and only friend Nakia, she is given an offer she did NOT want to refuse. Every character, INCLUDING Sabrena herself, was amazing. From the best friend Nakia, to the love interest Prince Kiran of the faes, to even the troll villain Amirah. You'll have characters to love, characters to root for, and a villain to want to see defeated. I don't really know what else to say except I love Sabrena and Kiran together, the friendships she's made, and the trials she undertook to save her family, her Prince, and her country. Love this book.
World Building: 5* - Alrighty, despite that this is a Romantasy, I was worried the fantasy was going to take a terrible back seat to the romance, thankfully it wasn't. There was an amazing balance between world lore, faith, magic, and romance. We even learn a lot about Kiran and his family, where the trolls came from, and quite possibly something about sirens? You just gotta read and find out what I mean lol.

The story starts with an event that kicked up another war with trolls, but one where only the faes faced alone while the elves were struggling to survive. Over a hundred years later, there is a truce between trolls and faes while the elves are struggling to make ends meet while Sabrena faces harassment and bullying from her own people for not having magic. Before she knew it, a fae comes to her home with an offer she just didn't refuse, to restore the connection between faes and elves, she is asked to marry the fae prince, and in return her family is given riches to help them live comfortably for the rest of their lives. After saying her farewells to her family and best friend, Sabrena comes to learn that there was way more to her deal than she realized. This story is filled with mystery, a don't touch me or doom us romance, and a fantastical world filled with magic, powerful deities, and shackled curses. I found this story so thrilling and entertaining that I seriously struggled with putting it down. Just trust me and go read it!
Over All: 5* - Are you kidding me of course 5 stars haha! I loved following Sabrena from the very beginning. Watching her struggle with belonging in a society that mocked and reminded her of what she lacked, trying to help Kiran and figure out his curse and discover where the trolls were hiding, and learning to accept who and what she is while saving her Prince and her country from an evil, power hungry sorceress. This retelling was both thrilling and romantic with a fantastical world I fell in love with, and with characters I would very much die for! This author is an amazing storyteller and I can't wait to see what she will write next.

East of the Sun, West of the Moon is one of those fairytales that feels like it gets done all the time, because of how closely Beauty and the Beast resembles this original tale. But “Daylight’s Curse” was a fresh take on an old classic with all the hallmarks of big, epic fantasies that Hackett is so masterful at crafting. We follow Sebrena, an elf woman who struggles with belonging in her tight knit community as the only one without magic. Through a deal to help her family and her people, despite their ridicule, Sabrena agrees to marry the broody fae prince, who is cursed to be a dragon during the day, returning to his true form at night. Like Sabrena, Kiran also makes a deal that puts him at a disadvantage in order to protect the continent. Which makes for such a strong basis for these two characters, forced into a marriage neither truly wants, to build a genuine, and beautiful relationship from. As long as they don’t accidentally trigger the curse that could see their world destroyed by the evil troll sorceress in the meantime, of course.
Ok, let’s get the disclaimers out of the way: I was a critique partner for the author on this novel. I got to see the very first draft of this story, and trust me when I say, the updates and refinement that Hackett put into this novel were phenomenal. Rereading this story in its final form was an utter delight, and I am forever grateful to the author for trusting me enough to read her work of art in such a raw form. That being said, that’s why I waited until I could read the final version of this book before rating or reviewing the story, because a lot can change on the editing floor. But I was not disappointed in the slightest.
If you are unfamiliar with the original East of the Sun, West of the Moon story, I am happy to say you don’t have to know that tale in order to enjoy Daylight’s Curse. It can help with really understanding major plot points, but not having that knowledge base doesn’t detract from the magic within this story. If you’re a fan of classic fantasy elements like glittering magic, elves, fae, dragons, trolls, sirens, and a score of magical creatures, then you’ll love this story. Hackett not only incorporates all those elements flawlessly into this standalone romance, she does so with a healthy dose of heart and pure emotion. Because outside of all those fantastic elements, Sabrena is learning to love herself, to take up her space, to thrive, and that she is more than enough just as she is. It’s a beautiful message that I fully support! But, if that wasn’t enough, you have incredible family and found family bonds on top of a very tender and emotional love story. Oh, and did I mention all the action this book has? For such a lovely tale, there are plenty of action scenes to keep the pacing of this novel strong throughout.
Sabrena and Kiran are an amazing couple, but this book is full of well-developed side characters, too. I’m partial to Nakia, myself. But Hackett is a master of subtly, too, so I highly recommend you pay attention to her words, and not just because her use of prose is lovely, either (even though it is). Part III of this book flew by, so be prepared to not get any sleep when you hit that section! Plus, there are some absolutely gorgeous illustrations strewn throughout the novel which I love to stare at even after the book’s completion. If you are looking for a NA, standalone fantasy with some sweet romance and beautiful, emotional themes throughout, you’ll want to read Daylight’s Curse ASAP!

Rereading this story in its final form was an utter delight, and I am forever grateful to the author for trusting me enough to read her work of art in such a raw form. That being said, that’s why I waited until I could read the final version of this book before rating or reviewing the story, because a lot can change on the editing floor. But I was not disappointed in the slightest.
If you are unfamiliar with the original East of the Sun, West of the Moon story, I am happy to say you don’t have to know that tale in order to enjoy Daylight’s Curse. It can help with really understanding major plot points, but not having that knowledge base doesn’t detract from the magic within this story. If you’re a fan of classic fantasy elements like glittering magic, elves, fae, dragons, trolls, sirens, and a score of magical creatures, then you’ll love this story. Hackett not only incorporates all those elements flawlessly into this standalone romance, she does so with a healthy dose of heart and pure emotion. Because outside of all those fantastic elements, Sabrena is learning to love herself, to take up her space, to thrive, and that she is more than enough just as she is. It’s a beautiful message that I fully support! But, if that wasn’t enough, you have incredible family and found family bonds on top of a very tender and emotional love story. Oh, and did I mention all the action this book has? For such a lovely tale, there are plenty of action scenes to keep the pacing of this novel strong throughout.
Sabrena and Kiran are an amazing couple, but this book is full of well-developed side characters, too. I’m partial to Nakia, myself. But Hackett is a master of subtly, too, so I highly recommend you pay attention to her words, and not just because her use of prose is lovely, either (even though it is). Part III of this book flew by, so be prepared to not get any sleep when you hit that section! Plus, there are some absolutely gorgeous illustrations strewn throughout the novel which I love to stare at even after the book’s completion. If you are looking for a NA, standalone fantasy with some sweet romance and beautiful, emotional themes throughout, you’ll want to read Daylight’s Curse ASAP!

This may be one of my favorite East of the Sun, West of the Moon retellings out there!
First, I liked how the main ship is an elf and a fae. I don't think I've ever read a book that had that pairing. It's also really nice having a romance centered around two characters with long lifespans. Also, they both are more than a century old. Sabrena, the elf without magic, is nearly 2oo; while Kiran, the cursed fae prince, is around 350.
I honestly loved all the characters in this! I'm rooting for Damara and Sabrena's family to have more page time in future books. Also, it made me really happy to see a main character with a great family: Sabrena has both of her parents, her siblings, and her best friend/sister by heart at her side!
Also the slow burn romance between Sabrena and Kiran was amazing. I liked how their relationship developed over time. Also, I loved the twist on the original fairytale curse!
All in all, I really loved this standalone fantasy!

Tyffany has done it once again with marvellous characters and a gripping tale. The plot flows effortlessly and not once do you feel like it's being forced. The names feel so original to a retelling and the characters and races created are unique in their characteristics.
I have several lines bookmarked, because for sure I'll be returning to it over and over again. 🤭

this book is a true definition of a fairytale. it was whimsical and heartwarming, and has all the fantastical elements of the fairytales we grew up with ( including a dragon!! ). the plot was perfectly paced and the world was built together beautifully. the characters were written so well done that i felt they were real people with real flaws ( like sabrena’s scars - that hit close to home for sure ). not to mention, that someone who is deemed mald magicae ( without magic ) can be the most magical character of them all. it was beyond refreshing to read about a female main character who wasn’t a proclaimed chosen one, but truly a simple being with complex emotions. kiran and sabrena’s relationship wasn’t forced like some relationships can be in stand alones, and they both developed together on their own. while i do wish we had more time with kiran and sabrena, i still do love them together! plus y’know, having a cursed husband who turns into a dragon is pretty damn cool. i definitely recommend checking daylight’s curse out if you’re looking for a quick but magical read!!

Honestly this book is my favorite so far out of 2023. Kiran and Sabrena story have my absolute heart. It wasn’t just their story about finding each other but as well as Sabrena Journey in finding herself. I adored her connection to her family and how they stuck by her side and how close she was to them. 6/5!!!

Very very surprised to have liked this as much as I have!
I found it really easy breezy to read. Subtle humour added in various spots, some angst sprinkled and a hot dragon prince = a good read!
Sabrena is a magicless elf. (There are elves, shape shifting fae, trolls, etc!) She and her family are struggling to make ends meet after the war. When suddenly she gets a proposition for marriage.
I really loved the prince’s personality. He’s this broody guy with a heart that cares a little too much for all his people and loved ones.
Sabrena’s character arc surprised me quite a bit. I really liked how she became more sassy and confident as the pages progressed.
This book had the perfect plot for major angst which I think could’ve been done better. There was so much potential! While I could feel the chemistry and did feel a tummy dip in a part or two, added angst could’ve really taken this to a whole other level!
Bottom line: Perfect for romantasy lovers, plus it’s a stand-alone which is just perfect for a quick getaway!

I haven’t read anything by the author just yet, and I was curious as to her writing style and her ability to capture an audience early on, especially with a standalone. I was not disappointed. It sucked me in from the very first page and the storyline didn’t suffer nor felt rushed despite the number of pages. Reading Daylight’s Curse is a real treat. We get a world building that was clear from the get go, characters that you’d definitely root for, and a tale that I wanted to rad again as soon as I finished that last sentence. This is one of my fave reads this year so far, and got me looking up her backlist so I can check out her other works.

This was the best version of "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" that I have ever read!! Was it because it was Elves and Fae battling the Trolls? Or that he was a dragon instead of a bear? I don't know what the magic of this book was, but it was a delight to read and I devoured it! The artwork inside of this book (maps, roses, and full-page pictures!) was stunning, too, and an extra treat whilst reading.
If you are looking for a cozy, fairy tale read, look no further than this book! It was a pleasure to read and a strong, yet joyful telling of this well-known tale. I simply loved it!

I really liked this book. The romance between Sabrena and Kieran was so adorable and heartwarming. It made me swoon. The relationship between Sabrena and her family was also a highlight for me. I loved her best friend Nakia and her brothers Connak and Rhett. Loved how supportive and loving they all were to each other. The character development that Sabrena went through was amazing. She really came through at the end. The only minor critique that I have is that the last hundred pages felt a bit rushed. But I loved the rest of the story so much that I don't really mind.

A lovely, charming, romantic fairytale!
There were so many nuggets of wisdom in this book. The characters were all so tender and thoughtful, helping one another to overcome their personal challenges. I had a thoroughly delightful time reading.
Alas, the ending did feel a tad rushed, and I feel the author bit off a little more than they could chew with the various plot threads--they weren't all tied off by the end. However, I am very glad I read this and recommend it for anyone wanting a sweet yet adventure-filled romantasy!

This entire story was just so magical and beautiful. Daylight's Curse is my first Tyffany Hackett book (that's not a cowrite) and I am simply in love with her story telling!

I am a sucker for good worldbuilding and this has it! I love worldbuilding but I can be bored by it very quickly and I was not bored at all. I love this work and I just want to live in it. The detail was just amazing.

The good: The love interests are close in age for a fantasy romance novel. She's ~200 and he's ~350.
The bad: The first 70% of the book has decent pacing, but the last 30% is super duper way too fast paced. It was like reading a toddler's board book fast paced. It read like an outline or rough draft that wasn't finished. The final 30% could've been better flushed out / detailed / explored / whatever, and probably had 100+ pages added to the book no problem.

It’s not a bad book, it’s just all very convenient in the story when things happen, the FMC suddenly changes so much without much character development time or reason and everything is so predictable. It is cute and sweet though.

I read this book in almost one sitting and what an enjoyable read it was. I loved that this is a fantasy standalone (I feel like there aren’t enough of them out there). I love that you don’t have to wait a long time to know how the story ends. I think it is amazing that you can bring all of those fantasy elements and world building together in one book. The writing was good and it was easy to read and understand. Which I think is very important for a fantasy story. Therefore it was also very easy to get into the story and understand the world. The characters were a lot of fun as well. You go on a journey with them and it was so lovely to get to know them better throughout the story. And it is not only that, there is some character development as well. I loved the slow burn romance. I do wish they had more time together in the book and the ending kind of the last 33% of the book felt wrapped up a bit fast. Other than that I fell completely in love with this world.

I have read a few of Ms. Tyffany's books and loved them all, so I was so excited about this one. A standalone, East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling that I would call mature YA.
I absolutely loved this story! All of Tyffany's characters are always so enchanting and well rounded, you can't help but fall in love with them all. I loved Sabrena and Kiran and how their relationship developed. And how close Sebrena is with her family, especially when her brothers and chosen sister go with her to help save Kiran. The story was really captivating in all it's elements. And there was a twist near the end that almost had me throwing my tablet across the room! Did not see that one coming! And it hurt!

Daylight's Curse by Tiffany Hackett is a beautifully crafted standalone fantasy brimming with classic elements: trolls, elves, fae, sirens, dragons, curses… It’s a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, a fairy tale that was new to me. The FMC, Sabrena, shows significant growth throughout, though she’s a touch too sweet for my taste. Kiran, on the other hand, strikes the perfect balance of broody and caring as an irresistibly handsome fae dragon lord. I really enjoyed the curse-driven storyline, though I also discovered I don’t enjoy reading about trolls all that much. The story carries a meaningful message about self-love, scars and all. Definitely recommended for fans of New Adult slow-burn romance.

The FMC’s character development steals the show in this book. She goes from a misunderstood, bullied, magic-less and scarred elf to a brave and competent swordswoman capable of slaying an enemy with the power of a god. At times, the book feels derivative: the fae coming to her home where she lives in squalor to take her away to marry the prince reminded me of ACOTAR, and the similarities with that (and Beauty and the Beast) continue when we learn that the prince is cursed and that none of the members of the household can speak of it. There’s a locked magic garden she can’t get into, like Bluebeard’s secret room, but we never find out what’s behind that door. Nor does she ever read the passage in the book which is disappointing. But I guess she learns by doing, anyhow. Or maybe the author is saving stuff for a second book.

Daylights Curse was a fun fairytale read. It is a East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling, the first I have read and I adored it. I want more of these retellings. I loved how relatable all the characters were. Also there is a dragon and I am here for it. I loved the romance progression and the growth of our MCs. I really enjoyed how Sabrena came to love her perceived flaws and embrace them and herself. It’s a fun fantasy standalone perfect for someone who just cant commit to a series right now.
The side characters are just as fun and have such distinct personalities. This was a great spring read. The world building is done so well that you can easily picture the characters and environments.

Excuse me this was completely gorgeous. I loved every minute of this East of the Sun West of the Moon retelling. I love the writing style, and I loved the plot and the way the author made it her own.
