Robin Barefield does it again with this book set in the Alaska Wilderness. Eight people are murdered at Bear Creek Lodge and Alaska State Trooper Dan Patterson is leading the investigation. The challenges to investigate a remote crime scene are daunting. The crime scene can only be accessed by use of a small plane or boat. In the hours it takes to assemble his team and the necessary equipment to process the scene, evidence can be tampered with or lost. Two young women who work at the lodge are the only two survivors of this brutal attack and they claim to have heard and seen nothing. The son and daughter of Bob and Jules Barlett, the owners of the lodge, were present for dinner along with the daughter's sketchy boyfriend, but each was seen leaving hours before the attacks could have taken place.
Bob Barlett had enemies. By all accounts, he was not an easy man to like, but why would anyone murder him and Jules with an ax and shoot their guests, but leave the cook and housemaid alive?
Barefield provides us with several suspects and motives for this carnage, but one thing remains clear whoever did this is extremely dangerous and has no qualms about killing again to cover up their crimes. Fast-paced action, but methodical detective work makes this procedural unique.
