I backed the book on Kickstarter, and read it on my desktop rather than wait for the hard copy to arrive. It's a neat story of a group of unlikely heroes (a janissary leader, a nun, and a Wallachian prince, all suffering their own shames) who join to defeat a monstrous figure. It was fun, and rollicked, which I was glad to see. Can't wait for it to hit shelves so more people can read it.

My only quibble is the back matter in the book is a bit too straightforward ("here is a script" "here are layouts" "here are pencils"). I could have enjoyed an essay or two on the creative process, why this story was one he chose to tell, how he came to work with this artist, etc. Still, good. Check it out.

The biggest gripe here is that I wanted more. In other words, the pacing felt a bit off, such that this could been a nice ten issue maxi series or a 50 page one-shot. Don’t let my gripes get you too much, because there is a lot to love here.

First and foremost is Acosta’s art, colored wonderfully by O’Halloran. It feels very classic comics filtered through contemporary widescreen sensibilities. The process pieces in the back are a wonder to behold. The action flows naturally and coherently, conveying straightforwardly what is happening and how it is going. Some of the full-pagers would make lovely posters. Otsmane-Elhaou too adds some beautiful touches, especially Dracula’s voice.

The second killer element is how the team weaves in a fascinating historical element to the Dracula narrative. I simply don’t know why I haven’t seen a story incorporating these before. The closest I can think of is the Netflix Castlevania, but this is even more grounded than that. This comic sent me on a Wikipedia binge in the best possible way. This is why I want a full miniseries with this material (or at least a longer graphic novel).

Returning to the slightest of nitpicks, I do wish more was done here thematically with religion. It plays a huge prt of the narrative, but we don’t get much religious internal depths to the characters. This goes especially for Dracula himself. I don’t need a full backstory or origin, but I would have liked to see flashes of something I can piece together. The epilogue thus feels tacked on to get a theme out.

I don’t know if this is available to those outside kickstarter backers. If it is, I do recommend checking it out!

I obtained this graphic novel because I signed up for a Kickstarter for it a couple years ago. It doesn't have a ISBN so I'm not sure how anyone else would go about getting it. It's a cute small story about a Janissary from the Ottoman Empire and a devout Christian nun teaming up to confront a mythical evil. I like that faith is back in style, I like that people of different faiths working together are back in style.

The premise of this book - "Muslim knight and Christian nun vs. Dracula in the Middle Ages" - hooked me immediately. I loved that the book's depiction of Dracula was rooted in the actual history of Vlad the Impaler; this version of the character stands out against seemingly endless variants of Bela Lugosi. The art, by Dave Acosta, is frequently stunning, with phantasmagoric creature design and lush coloring by Chris O'Halloran. I didn't rate this higher because, in the end, the whole thing felt kind of slight. The characters are interesting and sympathetic, but we don't learn that much about them; I felt the book could have done more with their clashing faiths and troubled histories. The story itself, while exciting, feels over too soon and doesn't really connect with Bram Stoker's original novel in any meaningful way.

In short, if you're looking for a quick, bloody, pulpy Dracula story that's told from a unique perspective, this is for you - just don't expect profundity.

3.5 stars. I feel this story could have been much richer and convoluted: The renegade muslim knight and the christian nun fighting together made me pledge for the kickstarter supporting this comic. However, the story seems rushed, there is very little meat in it. I feel the first part was well developed, but the rest feels like it was written in a hurry.

I have to say the drawings are great and I would love to see a follow up, but hopefully it will be a longer story than this one.

I was a Kickstarter backer, and couldn't wait to read the ebook version as soon as I received it. I'm looking forward to seeing the print version in all its glory.

This was a fun and unique take on the Dracula mythos. I loved the pulp art style and I enjoyed the characters. I just wish the graphic novel explored more of their stories before the end!

A free-wheeling, exploration of an alternative incarnation of the familiar Dracula story, this time with a hint of a more action adventure vibe and set in an alternative history medieval setting of sorts. This was a Kickstarter backer project for me because I am a fan of Ahmeds' writing.

Essentially we find ourselves in a world wherein the familiar man known as Vlad Dracula was a child when the Ottoman Empire had reached the kingdom known as Wallachia and defeated the King of the land, who was nicknamed The Dragon, and instead of being killed, he was made a vassal king to rule on behalf of the Empire. Meanwhile his two sons, Vlad and Radu, were taken to be raised in the house of the Turkish ruler.
The present of the story finds us in a day when the now-grown Vlad has been sent home to take over as vassal ruler from his now deceased father. However... something is afoot as darkness seems to have found a home in the cold and harsh country... and elite Jannisary named Adil finds nothing but blood and death and horrors when he is sent on a mission to Wallachia; leaving him more than troubled and definitely somewhat lost in his faith and his purpose. Meanwhile a young nun named Marjorie is living out her life peacefully in a convent until powerful supernatural forces intervene to turn her world inside out and force her to leave her sanctuary and seek a new purpose in the scary world beyond. Eventually the paths of these two lost souls of different faiths, oft at odds with each other, come to cross and perhaps there is a new purpose that will find and bind them, whether they wish it or not.

I honestly went into this with little to no thoughts on the story and trusted in the creative team of Ahmed and the Acosta. Overall I can say that it was a good solid book - some flaws, but nothing that I would call a negative.

First, the story: It is a well told, well paced story with characters that can be understood and are not one-dimensional. The speed at which things unfold is also reasonably well balanced with time given to exposit in good measure while also allowing for the plot itself to never get stuck anywhere. Another big plus is that it is unlike many retellings that chooses to focus on the historical, brutal Vlad Dracula aspect of the villain instead of just the monster more familiar to many.
However, the pacing and size of the book is also a flaw - perhaps it was limited due to the intended page-count and targets for the kickstarter, but there is almost a rushed element to it all. The characters are good, but I wanted a bit more from almost all of them; the basic narrative threads are strong but could have also benefitted from a little more space to breathe; and lastly the villain - yes it is Dracula whom most all of us know, but had it been literally anyone else, it would have felt threadbare because he is a bit flat.
Is he scary? Does his ominous presence seep in through other parts of the story? Yes to all that, but it is like the creeping evil the main characters feel, but it makes him little other than a scary monster to dispatch at the end of the story. I am of the school that stories with obvious villains, need those villains to be interesting or compelling in at least some measure if you want something other than a monster-of-the-week type of thing - and that does not happen here.

The artwork is definitely a stronger aspect for me. Modestly done without too much window dressing and overt density, it is somewhat clean and the mostly muted and dour colour palette does a good job keeping the mood alive throughout the book. It is a little dull, but I suppose that works with the tone of the story for the most part.

Perhaps it could have been better. But on its own, I have no regrets having backed it as it is a solid action-horror story and was entertaining to read. There were moments where it felt to me like it could very easily be not unlike the mid-budget fantasy action movies from the 1980's like Krull or Beastmaster or Ladyhawke - not a story from which you expect too much in-depth storytelling but solidly gritty adventure with good basic characters and a good vibe and script.

It was a very interesting take on the Dracula myth. The interactions between the muslim warrior, the christian nun and the Wallachian prince (not Dracula, his brother) were great. The art is stunning and the book itself is gorgeous. My rating would be more of a 3.5*. But I can't give in good conscience a 4.

Even though I love the way the action is portrayed, I feel it's sometimes a bit rushed. The story also feels that way. It moves a bit too quickly. Not too much that we can't feel connected to the characters. Much is shown in the art and not told and I love that in a comic book/graphic novel. But I would have taken a bit more. A bit more of the characters' past, a bit more of the three of them together. Also, that epilogue is a bit... well, cliché, and a bit off when compared to the rest of the story.

And when I see at the end of the book all those pages for the script, line arts, colors, etc... well, it's beautiful, but a bit much. Would have prefer more of the story filling those pages, and maybe a bit of an afterword from the author and artists.

But in general, it's a wonderful graphic novel and I would recommend it for those who likes those thematics.

I finally got around to reading some of my backed kickstarters this weekend. I really enjoyed this and can echo most of the positive remarks I have seen in the other reviews. It definitely had a sort of Castlevania feel to it, heroes from different backgrounds banding together to defeat the big bad, but the brevity of the story and Dave Acosta’s gorgeous art set it well apart from the Netflix series.
Most of the negatives I read in my perusal of the other reviews on the site had to do with the length of the story and the lack of character development. While I understand the criticism, I can’t help but think that Saladin Ahmed realized that to build out the characters in the way these reviewers are asking would most likely have doubled the size of the book. Given that this seemed to be a lock down project and there is only one artist and one color artist working on the project, doubling the number of pages would have been asking too much from the art team. Also, we would probably see reviews in here complaining that the story was now too long.

This is historical fiction with fantastic elements about a Janissary of Mehmet the II, a Catholic Nun, and Vlad The Impaler (Dracula.) Naturally religion is a heavy element, but it doesn't go the way of strictly favoring a faith over another. Both Muslim, Christian, and even non believer are shown as flawed people trying to do their best in a hard world. Ultimately it shows that though there are many differences, there are many commonalities, and only in uniting can we prevail.

I am sure many of the choices made may upset conservative believers. Bare in mind it is a work of fiction. For example Mehmet II is shown as having a male lover. There is some historical evidence that forms this basis, BUT it is far from considered a historical fact, and naturally it could bother some people that he is portrayed this way. But again, it is a work of fiction.

If you check out from the religious overtones, there is just a well drawn tale about some badass warriors fighting an undead evil. It works well.

The art is amazing and I enjoyed this take on the Dracula story, with a Muslim soldier and Christian nun teaming up to defeat the forces of evil. However, it wrapped up way too quickly. As others have noted, I have the Kickstarter version which, it turns out, has a lot of extra backmatter, so the ending came even more abruptly.

The character development was good, and it was sweet to see the budding friendships between people of vastly different backgrounds. I would definitely pick up a sequel, were Ahmed and Acosta to team up again.

I backed this on Kickstarter and read it in a single day. As someone who majored in medieval near eastern history (studying the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires in particular) as well as a fantasy and as fan this was very much a book for me. I loved this version of the Dracula story and really appreciated the depictions of the Ottoman Empire and a more nuanced and rich and complex depiction of the diversity at that time in the region.

And as a comic fan this was a beautiful book to read. Fantastic art and colors. As well as a master class in the construction of a comic in the back pages that show the evolution of the comic in stages of the art, colors, lettering and even scripts.

Great fun and a compelling story and I was left wanting to see more of that time and place and characters. It is also deeply refreshing to see characters of different faiths working together to common purpose and clearly respecting each other’s faith (or lack of it).

More drake than dragon

4/5

I love Saladin Ahmed's work & have read any & everything he has ever written (still hoping for more of the "Throne of the Crescent Moon" series -- PLEASE, Saladin, PLEASE!). His writing + the legend of Dracula + Acosta's illustrations? I would travel to Wallachia itself for that!

Likes
+ Fresh take on a classic story
+ An unlikely, eclectic group of heroes
+ Excellent artwork
+ Ahmed's crisp writing

Dislikes
- SO SHORT

Summarily, this is an excellent graphic novel but way too short. As the review title suggests, this really is more drake than full grown dragon & feels like a teaser rather than a whole novel. But strongly recommended for all comic fans, Saladin Ahmed fans, Dracula fans, Spawn fans, & anyone looking for a diverting hour of reading & art.

I backed this on Kickstarter because I've enjoyed Ahmed's run on Miles Morales. And the premise sounded like a neat twist on the Dracula mythos -
"Muslim knight and Christian nun vs. Dracula in the Middle Ages". And it is. The art is good, evoking classic US comic book style. But the story is unevenly paced. The first half was a nice slow burn introducing our characters. And then the second half rushed through the rest of the story. If it had paid off the climb up the mountain with an equally compelling and rich climax I would be loaning my copy to everyone I know. As it is, it's okay.

I backed this on Kickstarter and I am glad I did. A janissary and a nun band together to fight horrifying forces in the Ottoman vassal kingdom of Wallachia, where the ruler Vlad Dracula has gone a bit off the rails...

It's a short read, and I did finish it wanting more, but that's mostly because I enjoyed it a lot. The art is gorgeous, beautifully coloured and crammed with detail. The writing is engaging and I found the characters well developed for the amount of space they got. I would definitely have read more of this, but I appreciate the efforts of all involved to bring us something this high quality via a crowdfunding campaign.

A nice, quick, pulpy Dracula thriller about flawed people joining forces to defeat evil. I love Saladin Ahmed’s Miles Morales run and was happy to back this on Kickstarter- this the same heart that’s present in his other work. And the art by Dave Acosta is fantastic- there’s two 6-panel pages about 3/4 of the way through the book that I want framed.

I also enjoyed the back portion of the book with the scripts, lettering and sketch process.

2.5/5

Read this in one sitting because it was so short. It was a good idea but the execution felt rushed and lazy. The Christian and Islamic aspect of the two main characters was meh.. I really hoped for more for the female character but all she did was pray out loud.
Also, how are we only getting a 100 pages of the actual story? The rest of the pages was wasted on sketches and some of the script.. Beautiful colours and graphics though.

Dragon is a historical, horror epic. It features incredible art with amazing colors. It’s like the style and beauty of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula film captured on page, and you can feel Acosta’s love for the horror genre. The story is great too. It features two flawed, unlikely heroes brought together by faith and shares horrific experience to take down a monster that’s a compelling mix of the historical and mythic Dracula.

I loved this actually- amazing art, cool characters, and a really unique premise. However, I think it was too short to give a higher rating to. I wish this had been longer, or even a series, so that we could have gotten more invested in the story. Instead, this was a quick, amazing graphic novel, but I don't think it will stick in my memory all that much.

A fun, bloody adventure tale where three down-and-out people come together to fight Dracula. The art is beautiful, and I love the creature designs. The coloring really sets the tone and era in which this story takes place, dating back to around the time of the Ottoman Empire.

Well worth your time. It's a quick read but masterfully constructed.

An excellent read. A wonderful tale, putting a spin on legends we are already familiar with. Fabulous art, really evocative of the places and scenes they are depicting. Great supplemental materials, showing script, layouts, pencils, colors, lettering, etc. to illustrate how a book like this comes to be. Well worth the time. Recommended.

3.5 on StoryGraph but just 3 here. The illustrations and panels are so good but it was over so quick! Took me about 30 mins to read, and the second half of the kickstarter print is just bonus/process stuff. Would pick up another graphic novel horror though bc that’s a combo I hadn’t considered and it’s damn cool.

'Dragon' is a graphic novel about a Muslim janissary and a Christian nun drawn together to confront the evil of Vlad Dracula; it's fun and bloody without being particularly graphic about it, and just a good horrific vampire story.

Decent enough story that does a good job with combining at odds characters to defeat a common enemy, or really, force of nature.

I really wanted more from this, but as it stands it's a fun pulpy adventure that leans into its roots.
