Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, for the advance reading copy.

The book is really simple to read and fit for very young readers. The information given is at its minimal best. However, I feel the illustrations could be a lot better.

I love the Little People, Big Dreams series of books! This one is about Anna Pavlova, who, at the age of eight, was taken to see The Sleeping Beauty ballet show in Russia, by her mother. From then, she was hooked on ballet, and she became a professional ballet dancer. She became famous and she travelled a lot with her work, touching the hearts of many with her artistic dance skills. She set up her own ballet company, which was a huge success, and she also taught many little ones how to do ballet.

The book itself has really beautiful and quirky illustrations, and easy to read text, which my daughter and I loved.

Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

"Anna kept practicing night and day. She knew that only hard work transforms talent into genius."
Delightful biography of ballet's greatest star. Quirky yet appealing illustrations give a sense of motion. I even liked the moral of the story: "true success doesn't lie in the applause of others, but in the accomplishment you feel every time you give your best."

Having lived and breathed ballet when a young girl, I was excited for ‘Anna Pavlova’, a new addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS series of mini biographies, by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara intended for readers aged 4-7. (I am certain that I am not the only adult that enjoys them).

I was not aware of Pavlova’s early life or that she had to work hard to achieve the status of prima ballerina; overcoming what her teachers felt were physical faults. I felt that the message in one panel “that only hard work transforms talent into genius” is an important one. I found the details of her later life, including her interest in world dance, particularly fascinating.

The art work by Sue Downing is quite abstract, almost Cubist in style. I especially enjoyed how she incorporated swans and swan motifs into some of the illustrations echoing Pavlova’s iconic role as the Dying Swan.

The book ends with a biographical timeline accompanied by photographs and a suggestion for further reading at a slightly older level. The photo of Anna with a swan taken in 1920 at her London home was very sweet.

I am always happy to recommend new additions to this delightful series to parents, grandparents, educators, and librarians as a gentle way to introduce children to biography, history and nonfiction. I expect that ‘Anna Pavlova’ will be especially popular with young dancers.

My thanks to Quarto Books Frances Lincoln Children's Books for a temporary digital copy via NetGalley of ‘Anna Pavila’ for review purposes.

Anna Pavlova is another wonderful child friendly biography in the Little People, Big Dreams series. Anna was a little girl who lived with her mother, who worked hard to put food on the table and give Anna a gift now and then. When she was 8, her mother bought her tickets to see the ballet, Sleeping Beauty. Anna was hooked and worked hard over the next two years to become a ballet dancer. She was not a natural and was teased, but she got accepted into the Imperial Ballet when she was ten. She worked hard and eventually became a Prima Ballerina and performed all over Russia. She eventually formed her own ballet company and toured the world. She became one of the most famous Ballet Dancers in the world all because she persevered and worked hard. This is a perfect book for this series because it shows children that if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams like little Anna did. Sue Downing illustrated this book with quirky and whimsical illustrations that fit the story of Anna perfectly. The end pages also contain a timeline of Anna's life and resources for further exploration.

The joys of ballet! This book transports a message that is frequently neglected when discussing big names in the arts, IN sports, literature, or science - namely that talent is a myth and that outstanding performance can be achieved by anyone, as long as they work hard. No one is born as the prima ballerina, not even Anna Pavlova! In her installment of this series, the illustrations stand out for representing a more abstract side of styles, which I personally never preferred while I was still a part of the target audience, but the popping colours are sure to turn heads regardless!

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book tells the story of Anna Pavlova, one of the greatest dancers to have ever lived. It was nice to read about her discovery of ballet and how, after that, she spent all her life and effort in order to become a great ballerina.

Anna Pavlova by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another release in the Little People, Big Dreams series, which I have reviewed frequently on here. I just love these little books. They are always packed with facts about the person who they are writing about and full of colourful illustrations throughout.

Little Anna fell in love with ballet after watching a performance with her mother. At the age of just nine years old, she auditioned for the famous Imperial Ballet! But…she was rejected.

The set-back didn’t stop Anna—she auditioned again a year later and was accepted into the company. Although ballet was her passion, it didn’t always come easily to her, and she worked fiercely to become the best.

I found this little book full of easy to read, with great Illustrations throughout this small book. and I am so glad these books are being published and I highly recommend all of these books

This is a fantastic book about one of the greatest prima ballerina dancers in history, Anna Pavlova!

What little girl doesn’t dream of becoming a ballet dancer?

Anna was no different. Once she saw the beautiful dancers on stage performing The Sleeping Beauty when she was 8 years old, a dream was ignited. Being born premature, Anna already proved herself a fighter; her spirit was strong from her first breath. She knew what it took to make it in this world because she saw how hard her mother had to work as a single parent.

“She knew that only hard work transforms talent into genius.”

You can imagine her excitement after years of training to have a chance to perform in the same theatre where her dream began! Rather than keep her excitement to herself and her people, Russians, Anna decided to bring ballet to those around the world who had never seen it before. You’ll have to read about the steps she took to ensure it happened.

Children need to read more about the meaning of true success, and this is a perfect book to start that conversation. Anna didn’t focus on the applause of others, but rather on giving her best…that’s what made her feel successful. Furthermore, discussions will open up about natural talent and bullying. Anna wasn’t a naturally gifted ballet dancer, she was initially awkward and her technique came from lots of practice. Children need role models such as Anna that teach them that ‘being the best’ doesn’t often come naturally and it requires hours of devotion. Anna battled name calling, she wasn’t naturally good at ballet, and she came from a poor, single family, YET she became world famous and danced her way into our hearts.

Sue Downing’s images are whimsical and quirky and will definitely bring giggles. Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s text is simple and straightforward. Most of all, the message is clear and encouraging. Vegara always seems to know exactly what parents wish to teach their children and produces an apropos book that engages children and is the perfect springboard to countless conversations.

I was gifted this copy by Frances Lincoln Children’s books, Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

This installment of the Little People, Big Dreams series introduces children to Anna Pavlova, emphasizing her hard work towards achieving her dreams of becoming a ballerina. The biographical information shared in the book is briefly and fairly minimal, but there are more details in the author's note, along with some historic photographs of Pavlova.

The book gives a sense of the challenges she faced, such as growing up in a single-parent household and experiencing bullying at dance school, and it shows how she triumphed in spite of her difficulties, enjoyed a wonderful career, and went on to mentor many other dancers around the world, spreading ballet to other cultures and incorporating multicultural elements into European ballet.

The blocky, unnatural-looking illustrations are the reason why I'm not rating this book higher. The human figures have distorted bodies and faces, and their hair frequently stretches back behind them in extended, blocky shapes. Although the illustrations in this series are usually somewhat abstract and have flat color schemes, these pictures are visually skewed and unattractive. I would find them unappealing in any biography, but it is especially unfortunate that this illustrator handled the book about Pavlova, since the illustrations absolutely do not convey the artistry and elegance of ballet.

I received a copy from the publisher through Amazon Vine in exchange for an honest review.

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Sue Dowling
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Ballet, Biographic
Setting: Starting in Russia, but global.
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

I'm not a massive fan of Sue Dowling's illustrations. They feel more constructive than I like, and then I feel suits Anna Pavlova. The illustrations feel chonky, ever more awkward as the story goes on. The inverse would at least make sense, the illustrations becoming more graceful or elegant as Pavlova comes into her own. There are definitely subjects this style would suit, but Pavlova isn't one of them for me. I do, however, like the endpaper choices, swans, as suits the moment that made Pavlova a star.

Sánchez Vegara has done her usual wonderful work with the story. Putting focus in the right places and leaving off the a message of do your best every time and perseverance. Anna Pavlova's Little People, Big Dreams entry is definitely one for dancers or those younglings being bullied for not having the right body type for what they want to do.

As a bonus I give you a video of the performance of The Dying Swan, the performance that made Anna Pavlova's name and reputation. The quality it much what you would expect given it is from 1907 but there you go.

Thank you so much Quarto Kids / Frances Lincoln Children’s and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Anna Pavlova one of the worlds most renowned ballerinas who went on to inspire and teach her dancing to the world. As a young child she loved ballet but wasn’t the best at it, but as she got older she became a prima and wowed everyone that saw her, as she traveled she wanted to teach ballet to those that couldn’t learn it.

This was a really good read it’s sweet that she was inspired so by ballet and only dreamt of doing it. She then went on to inspire millions with her talent in ballet, seeing the entire world showcasing all her talent. I adore how much she wanted for others to get the opportunity that she had and started to teach ballet whilst she was touring. It’s also so sweet that their dances inspired her too. It’s great that she went on to teach children, sharing her gift with the future ballerinas.

Another really great book in this inspiring series, with illustrations on each page and a sweet story to inspire children and show them that they can achieve their dreams with hard work and dedication.

Succinct edition for this series that conveys nothing of the world of ballet through the ungainly visuals – but at least manages to tell a kind of story of her life for young audiences. We see Pavlova, and her single parent of a mother, go to the ballet for a treat, and the young lass deciding that that is all she wants out of life – but in her rare instance she got her wish, with a lot of coaching and hard work. By the end she's seen the world, and started to train and coach younger replacements for her, even if none could ever have such global acclaim as she did. But the book is sure to give the moral that the knowledge you've danced and given of your finest is the best thing, not just the bouquets and ovations. And let's face it, with Pavlova such a one-off it's clearly our hard work that is more attainable for the book's audience, as opposed to a far more impossible aim. Commendable, then, but for the looks – three and a half stars in total.

And not a mention of a certain pudding...

'Anna Pavlova' by Maria Isabel Sanches Vegara, is another lovely book in the 'Little People, Big Dreams' series. Simple text and stylistic illustrations, my 9yo and I found this to be engaging but definitely aimed at a younger audience. It highlighted well that despite being different to other young ballet dancers, bullied and considered not to be natural dancer, Anna's hard work, perseverance and vision for her own life is what led her to the incredible title of 'Prima Ballerina'.

As always, we enjoyed the additional facts and timeline included at the end. We also love that each book in this series really captures a different artistic style in it's illustrations. We know these ones won't be to everyone's liking but it felt unique, something a bit different but no less beautiful, which feels truly fitting for the story of Anna.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

There is nothing more formidable than the human spirit and boy, was Victor Hugo right.

I will keep reusing this line for when I read titles from this series as I am blown away by the never say die attitude of these amazing humans.

Why i love this series is because of the fact that so many faced one issue or another and decided, screw this, I am going to do my best and be the best. Nothing was ever going to get in their way of greatness.

I also absolutely love this series as i find out about the most interesting people and it is all thanks to @mariaisabelsanchezvegara

This is another brilliant addition to this series – even as an adult I look out for the next book in the series being released. I love the images in this series and this is a delightful introduction to Anna Pavlova, one of the best and most inspirations ballet dancers.

These mini books are excellent introductions to some of the well-known, and less well-known, characters that have had a great impact in our lives through a variety of subjects such as literature, women’s rights, music and in this case, dance.

Anna was a brilliant ballet dancer and the book really showcases her determination - it is a positive book about following your dreams. I read the book with my five year old daughter who takes ballet lessons and she really enjoyed it so that was a plus with me too

5 stars from me for this one – a delightful read and one I will be highly recommending!!

#Anna Pavlova

Note: 1 mit vielen Plusszeichen davor

(Es gibt sehr viele Bücher dieser Reishe, deshlab habe ich in diesem Falle eine einheitliche Rezi gewählt - was aber nichts damit zu tun hat, das mir dieses Buch nicht gefällt)

Another very nice installment in the 'Little People BIG DREAMS' series of books for little kids. These easy reads introduce a famous or notable person to kids, in an easy way for children to understand. Each book is illustrated & these drawings also shine a light for the reader, into the story. Anna Pavlova, the Russian prima ballerina in the early 1900's is highlighted in this book. The illustrations are unique, & seem a bit 'blocky', or 'sturdy' ......but they also fit the story perfectly....so it works great! This adult reviewer even learned something about Pavlova that I hadn't known....so I think that is wonderful! I think this is a great series for little kids!
I received this e-ARC from the Quarto Publishing Group-Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley, for review purposes. The opinions here are all my own, & it's a fair/honest review.

This newest addition to the Little People Big Dreams series covers the life of Anna Pavlova, a word famous Russian ballerina who remains relevant al these years after her death. I think this book in particular will be relatable to a lot of young readers as it represents a dream a lot of children share: to be a dancer. I love how this book shows that these dreams can come true, and I liked seeing the depiction of Anna Pavlova's childhood before seeing her live these dreams. Her lifetime of dancing and ballet was brought to life through the beautiful illustrations I've come to expect from these books. I'm really glad that there is now a Little People Big Dreams book covering a ballerina, and I think this one will be a big hit with young readers.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced ebook copy of this title!

When I was little my brother gave me a ballet book on Darcey Bussell. At the time every moment of my day I was fascinated by her ability to be one of the best ballerinas- I wanted to be just like her. But the book was filled with so many words that I didn't know where to start as I couldn't read fully. However, Ms Vegara's book is the sort of book that I needed. A book filled with brilliant illustrations to tell the life of an amazing ballet dancer, who was not just a ballet dancer but someone who sought to change the world for the better.
I love the Little People, Big Dreams series and I now buy them for my nephew and for friends with little ones. I definitely think that I will be reading this one to my nephew soon.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from #netgalley , thank you. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Little People, BIG DREAMS. One of a series for adults to read WITH children and for ESL to polish their English and learn about people who have shaped their world.
Anna was born small but determined in a village in Russia. When she was six, she attended her very first ballet performance and decided then and there that she would become a ballerina. And she did! It was very hard work for her, but she became the very best at what she did!
The illustrations by Sue Downing are mostly simple, colorful, and forthright. Every public and school library needs a copy!

Thank you so much Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group and Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara for the ARC!

What I love most about the book is Anna wasn't considered a genius when she started, she turned herself into one by working hard. Even then, she was different from others - less athletic but more graceful. Guess what? that is what attracted people to her performances. Just because something isn't considered great or liked by people right now, doesn't mean it'll stay that way. Maybe a right person can change their mind! Anna is an amazing idol to look up to. The message was wonderful and I loved the illustrations. Recommended!

Pavlova's childhood and career come to life for elementary level readers in this book in the Little People, Big Dreams series. Readers watch as Anna overcomes other people's views of dancers and becomes the prima ballerina in the Russian Imperial Ballet. From there, she traveled the world and formed her own dance company to bring the gift of dance to people in all areas of the world. She also formed her own dance school to share her love of dance with the next generation.
Sanchez Vegara writes for this age level so they can learn for themselves or share with their families.

This was just a beautiful and colorful story about the young Anna Pavlova. Another great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams collection by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. There is nothing more uplifting to share with children than a story about perseverance and really following your passions. Just when one might stop dancing ballet you see how Anna Pavlova didn't stop, kept at it, and her dreams came true. The illustrations are fantastic, the story is so special, love the lessons in these stories.

'Anna Pavlova' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Sue Downing is volume 85 in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.

Anna Pavlova was born premature and lived in a tiny house with her mother in Saint Petersburg. When her mother took her to a ballet, her future was set, but it was not an easy one at first. She became successful because she gave her best.

I knew of this person, but was delighted to learn more. The illustrations have a wavy quality to simulate graceful dance.
