I'm not a massive fan of Sue Dowling's illustrations. They feel more constructive than I like, and then I feel suits Anna Pavlova. The illustrations feel chonky, ever more awkward as the story goes on. The inverse would at least make sense, the illustrations becoming more graceful or elegant as Pavlova comes into her own. There are definitely subjects this style would suit, but Pavlova isn't one of them for me. I do, however, like the endpaper choices, swans, as suits the moment that made Pavlova a star.
Sánchez Vegara has done her usual wonderful work with the story. Putting focus in the right places and leaving off the a message of do your best every time and perseverance. Anna Pavlova's Little People, Big Dreams entry is definitely one for dancers or those younglings being bullied for not having the right body type for what they want to do.
As a bonus I give you a video of the performance of The Dying Swan, the performance that made Anna Pavlova's name and reputation. The quality it much what you would expect given it is from 1907 but there you go.
