The wedding was cancelled, but the honeymoon is pure magic

Left at the altar, Claire Jennings wasn’t going to let a cancelled wedding get in the way of her honeymoon trip to New York City, especially since she’d already paid for it. But a chance encounter and a good deed send her vacation in an entirely unexpected direction, drawing her into a side of the city that tourists don’t see—and neither do most New Yorkers.

After she meets a handsome stranger in a hotel bar, she finds herself in a social whirlwind, invited to glamourous parties in impossible venues and included in excursions right out of a movie. She soon learns that she’s become the accidental keeper of something every magical person in New York wants—a source of great power. It’s giving her abilities she never dreamed were possible, but it’s also made her a target.

If she ever wants to go back to her normal life where she isn’t constantly hunted by wizards, Claire will have to rescue an enchanted prince, find a way to navigate this magical world, figure out who the good guys and bad guys are, and mediate a centuries-old dispute. And all before her flight home.

Once upon a time ...

A little girl learned to amuse herself by making up stories in her head. She turned everyday activities into exciting adventures, and she made up new adventures for characters from her favorite movies, TV shows and books. Then one day she realized that if she wrote down those stories, she'd have a book! But that was crazy, she thought. Real people don't become novelists. That was like deciding you were going to be a movie star. You couldn't just go and do it.

But, it turns out, you can, and she did. She realized her dream of becoming a novelist and seeing her stories in bookstores.

And then she started to wig herself out by writing about herself in the third-person.

This is her story.

The Novelist's Journey

As I said above in that bit of silliness, I've always been a writer at heart. My favorite way to play was to create stories and act them out with my Fisher-Price people, my Barbie dolls or myself and a box of play clothes. If none of those things were available, I could just sit and make up stories in my head. I occasionally got into trouble for being a little too creative, such as the time when I embellished a bit on my kindergarten experiences (where's the dramatic hook in coloring, cutting out and pasting?).

When I was in seventh grade and a bit old for Fisher-Price people, Barbie dolls or the dress-up box, I started writing these stories down in spiral notebooks. Later, I found an old manual typewriter, taught myself to type, then wrote a lot of first chapters of novels on it. I still hadn't figured out how to actually be a working novelist who gets paid for writing (finishing a book instead of writing a lot of first chapters might have been a good start), so when it came time to go to college, I went to journalism school at the University of Texas. While getting my degree in broadcast news, I managed to structure a curriculum that might also help me in my real career plans. I took fencing (which I thought would be useful for writing fantasy novels), an astronomy course on the search for extraterrestrial life (in case I wanted to write science fiction), psychology, interpersonal communication, and parageography (the geography of imaginary lands).

I got serious about pursuing my novel-writing ambitions soon after I got my first job in public relations (TV reporting, it turns out, would have taken away from my writing time) when I started joining local writing organizations and reading books on how to write a novel. Then I took the big step of registering for a writing conference. With the registration fee, you could enter two manuscripts in a contest that went with the conference. I figured if I was paying that much money, I'd get the most out of it, so I wrote two entries. At the conference, I met a real, live editor, who encouraged me to submit, and one of my entries won the science fiction/fantasy category of the contest. I hurried to finish the novel the editor had asked for, then mailed a proposal.

She ended up rejecting the book, but encouraged me to keep trying. I ended up selling that novel elsewhere, then sold two more books to that publisher before I had another idea for that original editor. That book ended up selling, and then one more.

And then I hit the wall. Due to a number of circumstances, some of which weren't my fault and some of which were, I didn't sell anything else for eight years. But then I had the idea that became Enchanted, Inc., I wrote it, sold it, and here I am.

Other Life Stuff

I think I need to get a few more hobbies or something else going on in my life that isn't related to reading or writing because currently my bio in my books is shorter than the "about the typeface" section. Yes, a typeface has a more interesting life than I do.

When I'm not writing, I'm most often reading. Otherwise, I enjoy watching science fiction TV shows and then discussing them on the Internet, working crossw

This was a cute ass book.

Definitely didn't know what to expect when I picked up Make Mine Magic on my audible app but it ended up working out. All of the characters were entertaining and super interesting. Yet, I feel like this was lacking so much information. At least for me - especially when it came to the spells and magic. Ugh, I just wanted to know more about everything they were doing and saying.

If I had to pick a favorite character, it would probably be Claire. Didn't think it was going to be her in the beginning, because she was so naïve.. but just like that - she was a favorite. Besides her, the others were okay but I kind of wanted more. I don't know.. romance maybe?

Ugh, it was cute and that's about it.

I have to be honest. I saw that cute cover with the word magic on it and decided to read it. I didn't read the synopsis or anything like that. I simply jumped into it without knowing anything about it, and I'm glad I did that. I thought it was a typical romance book about this woman called Claire that was jilted at her wedding and had to spend her honeymoon alone until she would meet the man of her dreams.
However, that didn't happen. She ends up being tangled up in this world of magic where she is their new queen trying to break a curse and find a new leader for the magic community during her honeymoon time. So I was surprised, in a good way.
Nevertheless, there is romance, but also mystery and fantasy. The writing was flowing and captivating. I relished it a lot.

There is a subspecies in the human race that are witches. That is the underlying premise of this wonderful book. Some are born with the gift, others have it bestowed on them. Our heroine was living a predictable life in a small town with a dream to visit the Big Apple. She plans the perfect honeymoon but the groom gets cold feet. So she goes on the honeymoon alone.
Then a good deed changes her life.
This is a wonderful and imaginative story with excellent characters. The magic is introduced slowly while we get to know the key players. And the scenery is perfectly drawn, especially the addition to the library. Too Cool!

I have been a fan of the author for a while, and I was glad to see that there was a book of hers that I hadn't read yet.

I truly enjoyed the book, as it was written in the same fashion as her Enchanted, Inc books. A little mystery, a little romance, a little magic, all rolled into one. The ending wasn't as predictable as it could have been, but, with romances, they tend to have a similar theme. The journey to the end is what's important, not where they end up.

I hope to find more of her books that are similarly written. I have been enjoying them.

So this was a cute, light story. The plot itself is unique - wizardry folk living among non-wizardry New Yorkers. The main "conflict" being fought for in the story was "who" should govern the wizarding community.

description

I really loved Claire's personality. She was such a fun protagonist to follow along. I love her arc - starting out naive and then coming into her own and laying down the law!

The aspect I didn't quite like about this story was there was a lack of depth in terms of "why" holding the governing power was so important. And then the magical aspects weren't impactful enough. I wish the wizards described the spells more.

This was like any other kind of magic book I have listened to it was interesting I will give you that.

The mystery really had me intrigued. Claire is one smart cookie and I felt terrible for what happened to her until she finds herself in this pickle. But her wit and smarts really shined.

It was all very nice, I don’t know what I was expecting exactly it was a good story if a little dull.

The narration was pretty great.

3.75 stars (Audible Plus Catalog). Love me some Swendson. Her writing surpasses the "cozy" category, yet the content is always light + delightful, while still tackling issues. When I actually LOL, it deserves extra points!

She’s left at the alter and decides to take her honeymoon to NYC by herself. Little does she know she’ll stumble into the world of wizards. This is an incredibly fun and lighthearted book. It gives just a taste of what possibilities the magic world can offer, as seen from a completely normal, newly single, librarian.

It’s not terribly complex and I do wish it explained and showed more of the magical world of the wizards of New York, but it is such a refreshing story. She doesn’t always make the most logical decisions and contradicts her own better judgement, but who doesn’t? Easily binge-able.

Cute. Not memorable. No world-building. But cute. Plus, I’d like to be offered the job of paranormal librarian.

This was cute

Isn't it every librarian's (or an avid reader's) fantasy to stumble upon wizard-like powers? No? Just me? Well I definitely liked this although there were "No! Don't do that!" or "Don't trust them!" moments. All good books have idiot protagonists 🤷🏾‍♀️

Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone novel by the author of the Enchanted Inc. series. I borrowed this Audiobook through Audible Plus.

Audiobook Quality: This audiobook was well done. The narrator does a good job with the accents and it was very pleasant to listen to, not complaints.

Story (4/5): This was a cute and cozy little read about a woman, Claire, who was stood up by her fiance at the altar. Claire decides to take her honeymoon trip to New York City anyway on her own. Once there, she helps an old woman in need and is accidentally thrust into New York City's magical community. This was a fun little read that was exactly what I thought it was going to be and exactly the type of book I was looking to listen to. It's cute, there's a good mystery, some fun magic, and some romance. It's a self-contained story and was just a perfect fluffy read for the hectic time leading up to Christmas

Characters (4/5): I enjoyed all the characters in here even if none of them really blew me away. Claire was determined and hurt and I admired her actions throughout the book. The side characters are also well done but also fairly stereotypical, which to be honest was exactly what I was looking for when I picked this up.

Setting (4/5): This whole story is set in New York City, which is a fine setting. While I am not a huge fan of New York City it was kind of fun to revisit all the sites and sounds of it throughout this book.

Writing Style (4/5): This is a fairly simple story that is written in a way that’s easy to follow. It’s basically a cozy little mystery about Claire trying to unravel the secrets behind New York’s magic scenes and what this has to do with her. The characters are generally pleasant, everything is fairly predictable, there is a decent plot, and some sweet romance. While it’s nothing special, it was exactly the type of book I was looking to read and it was exactly what I thought it was going to be... which was perfect for my mood at the time. It was just a nice fluffy, little diversion and was decently written.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this, it was exactly the kind of book I was looking to listen to. I don’t listen to a ton of these kind of chick lit paranormal books, but that’s what I wanted and that’s what I got here. I keep planning on checking out Swendson’s Enchanted Inc series but keep getting diverted by other books; this book makes me want to keep that series on my to- read list. I would recommend it if you are looking for a fun, light, fluffy story that is fairly predictable and has some magic and romance in it and is a stand alone.

I'm more of a chick-lit fan, than someone who chooses a book about magic, but this was fab!

When listening to this book, I couldn't help smiling to myself! This book was beautifully read by Karissa Vacker. As a fan of chic-lit, it definitely enticed me in! I was somewhat surprised that I liked this so much, as I wasn't sure what to expect, especially going in blind! I wasn't too sure if a book about magic would be my thing, but it was!

I enjoy stories about time-travel, and in this story she is brought back to the 1920's. The narrator was brilliant in how she captured the essence of the 1920's party lingo, versus an average Texan woman, who we later discover is a librarian.

The library scene descriptions felt like it borrowed some visuals from the film, "Titanic" when describing the doors, but also of the older gentleman.. And "Fantasia", when describing the books!

From the start, this book felt like a Cinderella fairytale. However, there was also an element of where this story could've got a whole lot darker, like Dorian Grey. As the older blind woman appears to be older than she should be. It made you wonder about the young and beautiful people she was hanging out with, and when their faces would melt away!

We follow the main character Claire, in suspense, as there is a lot of dramatic irony going on throughout the book. However, at a certain point, you do start to wonder why they don't know yet and surely they must have some inclination of what's going on by now, but you just go with the flow!

It felt like this book should be a "Book 1" of a series of books, as we have just been introduced to these characters, which have a lot of room for expansion. I am new to this author, Shanna Swendson, so maybe she has other books that follow this story?

This book evolves around the finding of a necklace. A blue amulet, that holds great magical powers. Following this book, I want to know how this ordinary woman goes back to her normal life, after being exposed to magic. It feels expected that she will return to this life! But how will it look like when she does finally decide to return?

Should be YA.

This book should have been YA. The main female character came off like a teenager to me instead of an adult woman. Her thoughts, her reactions- they seemed immature. Her life isn't really explored in the book very much, so a few simple edits would do the trick to change this to a YA novel.

I had to check this book's category three times while listening. It is listed as a romance but there is no romance. The last hour finally had some romantic elements included but they are very minor. This book should not be considered a romance novel.

The fantasy element was ok but it was boring. Nothing happened that was particularly interesting in this story.

I think this is the first paranormal chick-lit I’ve read... it had some romance but was pretty G rated and definitely not the emphasis of the story.

The story had a enchanted fairytale feel and I really enjoyed it. I think I am a bit biased as the heroine is a librarian whose damn good research skills save her booty. I’d suggest reading when you want something lighter, there was nothing too heavy or complicated and the narrator was very good.

I just love her books. She's fun and silly and completely predictable...but just fun. Her books don't pretend to be anything other than what they are...just enjoyable. I really enjoyed this stand alone book by her.

Listened to this book on Audible. Interesting story of a jilted librarian who goes on her honeymoon alone and then finds magic and even gets to be queen for a few days. I hope this is a series.

This was a cute Audible Escape listen. It took a while for me to get into the story and at first I thought there was going to be some sort of love shape (triangle, octagon, torus, whatever), but thankfully that was resolved with relative ease.

Claire is taking what should have been her honeymoon vacation (but turned into a post-jilted get-away after her stupid groom left her at the altar) in New York City. It isn't long before she saves a stranger, and gains... what is it, Mr. Kissel?

Like you do, she gets slipped a piece of jewelry that pulls her into a magical power struggle. There's a whole Excalibur situation going on. Also, there's a prince under a curse that she needs to rescue, which was pretty cute.

The entire thing was very cute, very fun... and I'm probably going to forget it in a month. That's okay because honestly, I needed cute, fun and frothy. I don't know if it's stress, life, bad books, adult ADD or what, but I can't finish a book to save my life these days. I haven't been updating my re-read shelves for the past few weeks, but trust me, they're getting a workout, trying to lube the works, so to speak.

My one complaint (minor spoiler)...

Narrated by Karissa Vacker

This felt like an audiobook version of a Hallmark movie with magic. The author goes for a mix of Romannce, Comedy, and a splash of Urban Fantasy. The fluffy romantic comedy portions of the book are done the best. The fantasy (magical) side of the book is interesting but not fleshed out enough. It follows a predictable flow in both the romance and final solution. I saw it all coming less than half way into it. Theres isnt much world building or explanation on how these wizards co-exist with humans but it was interesting enough that I wanted to see what happened in the end. That's really any author's goal, right?

In my opinion this book should have been named, "How to Become the Stereotypical White Girl in a Horror Movie". Seriously, every silly mistake we poke fun at in scary movies, well this girl made them multiple times. First, she told everyone that she was in the city alone. Then she goes off with strangers... She even gets warning signs but ignores them... Even worse, she says Yes to dates with someone she knew was stalking her. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Its like she had no home training on how to keep yourself safe.

I must have missed it, but who was the wizard who entered the library when they were hiding behind the shelves? If you know please put in the comments section for me.

I'll rate this as a Romantic Comedy, so 3 stars... if I were to rate it on a Fantasty/SciFi scale then it would be 2 Stars.

I had high hopes for this book, since I had remembered enjoying Shanna Swendson’s “Enchanted, Inc.” series. But unfortunately, this one struggled to keep my attention. For me, it just took too long to get the ball rolling. I do think it has potential as a series, as it seems like this book served as set-up for more. Since it’s pretty new right now, I’m curious to see if others come out in the future. If so, I’d be willing to give book 2 a listen, since I did think it had potential to go somewhere good—just didn’t quite feel like it got there with this one. Overall, not a waste of time, just not my favorite.
