The Duke of Warrington dislikes social gatherings and despises the Marriage Mart which makes it nigh impossible to find a wife. He plans to secure his future duchess at a house party, but she’s being managed by a thoroughly meddlesome—and provocative—Mrs. Langton, who is determined to find his better nature. He’ll do anything to avoid her sunny charm and room-brightening smiles, but she’s breaking through his shell and the only way he can think to keep her quiet is to kiss her. He must marry the young lady, not desire the companion.
Darcy Burke is the USA Today Bestselling Author of sexy, emotional historical and contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily ever after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations. Join her Reader Club at http://www.darcyburke.com/readerclub.
A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids who seem to have inherited the writing gene, two Bengal cats and a third cat named after a fruit. In her “spare” time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say “no,” but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.
Since the death of her husband shortly after the marriage, Mrs. Juno Langton has found herself in the unique occupation of refinement tutor, helping young ladies prepare themselves for the London season and finding suitable matches. She is almost always cheerful, even with the most difficult of charges, but when she’s faced with matching her most difficult charge yet with a duke at a house party, Juno has met her most challenging task yet. The duke is rigid and unsmiling, if devastatingly handsome, and Juno’s charge is steadfastly unwilling to make any effort to get to know him.
Alexander, the Duke of Warrington, Dare to those who know him, loathes spending time in society and finds most people intolerable. He has eschewed the London season but gives in to his mother’s suggestion that he attend this house party to meet a young lady who could be his perfect duchess. However, he finds himself more provoked by the lady’s companion and her sunny nature. Dare soon goes from feeling irritation at her frequent smiles to responding with rare smiles of his own. He’s meant to be considering the young lady, not the companion, for his wife, but he soon begins to rethink his options.
This was such a fun, upbeat novella. The grumpy/sunshine trope was very well done here with an older heroine who truly was mature in her approach to relationships, not just with the hero but with other supporting characters as well. I’m also a complete sucker for a house party setting so that combined with the steam made this book a can’t miss read for me. Besides the well-developed tension and connection between the MCs here, I was also impressed by how much character development we get, especially from the hero, in such a short book. Dare is socially awkward and uptight, unable to handle changes to his plans, while Juno is happy-go-lucky and always smiling. Over the course of the book, he goes from finding her cheerfulness irritating to needing her like air and I loved seeing that grow as he changed and came out of his shell with her. I also liked the fact that she never tried to change him, even though he was rather difficult and had things he needed to work on. Rather, he changed because he wanted to be better for her. In one scene earlier on in the book Juno even accuses Dare of being incapable of deep emotional connection with anyone when he doesn’t make a connection with her young charge. Dare boldly corrects Juno’s misapprehension by saying he is indeed capable of feeling such a connection and that he feels it for her. I just adored his bluntness and how he was able to set the ever-prepared-for-anything Juno on the back foot, but in a good way, with his awkward charm. Add in the slight element of the forbidden and a lack of time for any annoying plot devices (such as the dreaded third act separation) to be deployed and this was a winning story for me.

Y'all, the title got me 😂 I didn't even read the synopsis. I saw the title and clicked on "Read Now" on NetGalley. I mean, COME ON — The Rigid Duke?! You best believe he's rigid in all the annoying and best ways 😏
In all seriousness, this was a quick and fun novella. A sunshine and grump romance set at a house party?! Yes, please and thanks!
Dare is a grumpy Duke who has a very rigid way of life. He likes everything organized and planned. But he's also very grumpy and anti-social. Juno, on the other hand, is a sunny matchmaker who loves socializing.
Juno and Dare were hilarious together. He was so determined not to be charmed by her smiles. The poor grumpy Duke didn't know what hit him 😂 I especially love the scene where she mocks him by imitating his grumpy behaviour 💀 And his reaction: "Wow, that's actually accurate." 💀
Historical inaccuracies aside, this would have been a solid 4 stars. However, the conflict was a bit too superficial for my liking. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading this one!
The Rigid Duke was an excellent read featuring a great opposites attract romance between a refinement tutor and the duke she's trying to match with her charge.
Mrs. Juno Langton works with young ladies to help them develop the skills needed to secure an advantageous match. Her newest charge is quite shy, but Juno knows Marina could make an excellent match if someone would just take the time to get to know her. When a house party provides the opportunity to match her charge with a duke, Juno will do whatever it takes to satisfy her employer. But unfortunately Alexander, the Duke of Warrington, is a grouch who detests social gatherings. As Juno works to break through the duke's gruff exterior, she finds herself falling for a man who can never be hers.
Juno married her husband against her family's wishes and ended up widowed in less than a year. After losing her husband, she took up a position as a companion to an older woman which led to her helping the woman's granddaughter secure a match. From there, Juno's business of helping girls find a match was born. Alexander, or Dare as most call him, likes things to be in order and he doesn't like unexpected plans or situations popping up. Dare has a tendency to speak his mind in any given situation which means others perceive him as rude or abrupt.
Juno and Dare did not get along at first as Juno found Dare to be unnecessarily rude and Dare thought Juno was was a bit pushy. Plus with the reason behind their meeting, for Dare to potentially marry Juno's charge, they both tried to push aside their initial interest in each other. I liked that even in the face of Dare's gruffness, Juno was consistent in her attempts to break through his shell. The banter between these two was great and I loved how quickly Dare fell for Juno. Ultimately Juno believes their relationship can go nowhere due to their different stations in life leading to a disagreement between the couple. I liked how they ended up working out their issues and was happy with the direction their romance went.
Overall The Rigid Duke was an enjoyable read and a great start to the series. I will definitely be continuing on with the series and picking up the next book soon.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
You should read this if you believe that opposites attract and like the Grumpy/Sunshine trope. Juno is going to a house party to matchmake her employer's daughter with the Duke of Warrington. Her charge Marina and the Duke don't show any signs of wanting to be a couple and unfortunately he only has eyes for Juno. This was a quick, light and very enjoyable read, with a lot of steam packed into a short amount of pages.
Thank you, Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Rigid Duke is the first novella in Darcy Burke’s Matchmaking Chronicles series.
At approximately 150 pags, it is a short and sweet story of opposites attract. Dare is grumpy and likes to stick to his routines and preferences, Juno is sunny and personable. Neither is a fan of the other at first meeting. But there are hopes for a match between Juno’s charge and Dare, which brings them frequently together. The more contact they have with one another, the more they begin to understand one another an attraction grows.
There is not much in the way of plot or outside story details, largely just following the interactions between the two main characters, which is not surprising considering how short this is. The story was short and engaging. The ending did feel a bit rushed and out of character to me, which is what brought my rating down. I just found the grand, public declaration to be a bit cringey and didn’t feel in keeping with the characters’ interactions that we had seen up until that point. Overall I enjoyed the novella _____
I would like to thank the author, Darcy Burke, for sharing an eARC of The Rigid Duke with me. This is my honest review.
Barbara’s rating: 4 of 5 Stars Series: Matchmaking Chronicles Publication Date: 3/8/22 Period: Regency Number of Pages: 156
This short book was a nice introduction to a new series and I’m looking forward to the next books in the series. While the book was short, it told a complete story and didn’t make you feel as if you’d missed something. The characters were all interesting and I’ll be interested to see which of them, if any, continue to be featured in future books.
Mrs. Juno Langton has made quite a successful life for herself since being widowed. As a highly sought-after refinement tutor, she can pick and choose her clients. Her current student is Lady Marina – who is totally disinterested in the marriage mart and lessons from Juno. Juno is very happy to learn they’ve been invited to a house party where Lady Marina will have the opportunity to be matched with a duke. Now, if Marina’s disinterest doesn’t discourage him, Juno will have another successful debutante launch to her credit.
Alexander Brett, Duke of Warrington, is definitely rigid in all things. He’s dour, curmudgeonly, taciturn, and … well – you’d have a hard time finding anyone more rigid and less inclined to find himself in a crowd of any kind – especially a house party. Yet, that is exactly where he is.
Will there be a match between Lady Marina and the Duke? Well, there are certainly no sparks flying, but many marriages are based on less. But, there is Lady Marina’s companion. She ignites all sorts of feelings just by being in the same room with him. A duke absolutely cannot marry a lady’s paid companion – or can he?
I hope you’ll give this book a read. The characters are interesting and the story is well-told, so I’m sure you can’t help but love it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I WON A FREE COPY OF THE RIDIG DUKE FROM GOODREADS GIVEAWAY!!
I DNF!! I really didn't like the way Mrs. Juno Langton the Refinement Tudor was written. She was a little too loose for me. she was supposed to be a refinement tutor. Her sexual behavior with her lovers in Bath made her more of light skirt!! I am also and really tired of the older women or spinsters being the heroine of the story.
The story didn't fit the Historical Romance era!! If red more like a Modern Romance!
The Duke is an enigma, he likes things a certain way and at first it looks like he sticks to a rigid schedule, but then he goes to the house party - something he detests. The young miss he is supposed to woo is so wrapped up in herself that she doesn’t give him or anyone else a chance to get to know her. Juno is forthright and a breath of fresh air in this interesting cast of characters. This house party makes for a delightful romp.
The Rigid Duke follows Dare and Juno as they meet at a house party and develop feelings for each other. Unfortunately, Juno is trying to set Dare up with her charge and knows that she, a working woman and not of the same social class, could never have more than a fling with Dare.
As a refinement tutor and widow, Juno is very independent. A confident and intelligent woman, she refuses to be beholden to a man and knows how to take care of herself. She is such a fantastic protagonist, and I love her strong, confident, and effervescent personality. She is the type of person that brings out the best and sees the best in others, which is especially obvious in her growing relationship with Dare.
Dare is also a strong and independent character. However, he is not as outgoing as Juno. They are opposites in many ways. He is very serious and a bit of an introvert, whereas she is very outgoing and social. However, they complement each other well. I like that she helps him become less rigid. She shows him how to live, and he is forever changed by her influence.
The romance has definite grumpy-sunshine vibes going on, and I loved it. Juno and Dare have fantastic chemistry, and the forbidden aspect of their relationship (she is trying to match him with her employer’s daughter) adds to the chemistry and charged atmosphere whenever they’re together. I love how Dare goes out of his way to see and spend time with Juno. Even when he isn’t fully aware of his feelings, he is drawn to this remarkable woman, and their romance is wonderful!
I really liked the secondary characters as well, especially their hosts for the house party who help in Juno’s matchmaking endeavors. Dare’s mother is also lovely and really perceptive. Though she has a minor role, her words have a strong impact on the story and Dare’s inner conflicts. There are many unique and distinct personalities, which makes for an interesting house party and a great read.
I enjoyed The Rigid Duke, as I enjoy all of Darcy Burke’s love stories. This is a fun, character-driven historical romance, and it included several of the tropes I love. I would definitely recommend it to romance readers and look forward to reading more books in this new series.
I just loved the main characters of Juno and Dare. Juno was a young widow but I liked the way that she felt confident to enjoy discreet affairs. She had a charismatic character that drew people to her. Dare, the Duke of Warrington was the complete opposite. He disliked crowds and was only at the house party to please his mother and possibly find a wife. Juno and Dare had an instant connection and their teasing and banter was amusing. I liked how the more Dare was in Juno’s company, the more he relaxed and his true personality came out. However, Juno wasn’t keen on marrying again and Dare needed someone suitable to be his duchess. This was an entertaining read that I enjoyed very much. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Rigid Duke, by Darcy Burke. Well who new that the well known Darcy Burke was a saucy minx while writing her novels. This love story was exquisite and absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t help it, I was utterly glued to each page. I just loved reading this deliciously, charming book. Juno and Dare are my favorite romantic couple this year so far. The two lived life on the edge of a enchanting love affair. The could care less what the ton said or did. I can’t call it a courtship when Juno and Dare met, but it was like a meeting of the minds. A time for two opposite people to meet and see who would out will the other. I believe Dare had his work cut out for him when he came up against Juno. I absolutely loved her character, she loves her life with so much freedom. She does what she wants, without having to answer to anyone. Juno was in charge of her own self and she couldn’t be more thrilled with that. Juno was “Venus” to the “Rigid Duke” and he had no notion of what to do or how to act around her. Quiet actually Juno’s character was a pure turn on for Dare. I sing the high praises for Darcy Burke as she provides a sensual, raging sexually charge, erotic love story between Juno and Dare. Their time together in this book left me with a smile on my face to the end. The book is easy to read, as well as a quick read, but don’t worry, the writer, Darcy made sure to not let her readers miss out on the juicy parts. You will like the characters, just as I have and beg for more naughty scenes. I recommend this book this book with two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers… read on!
A hero who holds himself in tight control as a part of his station in life, out to obtain a match with the least effort possible.
A heroine, who was not suppose to be the object of his attention, until it could not be denied.
A truly delightful story of opposites coming together when least expected. Wonderful characters, witty conversations, and an unbending attitude slowly unwinding..... A great start to this new series that I cannot wait for the next edition!!
Very enjoyable read. Alexander Brett, the Duke of Warrington, is all buttoned up and not enjoying himself at all. Refinement tutor, Mrs. Juno Langton, is all smiles and laughter and enjoying her time helping her student, Lady Marina Fellowes at the house party. But, as they say, opposites attract. Loved the way these two came together and how well they fit together when they finally let down their barriers. Especially enjoyed watching Dare's (Alexander's) awakening. Highly recommend.
You know I just love Darcy Burke books! I know she’s not always totally historically accurate (which usually is a deal breaker for me) but I just enjoy her books so much. Her characters just light up the page. The flow of the story is always excellent and I just keep reading until I’ve finished the book. I always make sure I’ve got a few free hours when I sit down with one of her books so I can read straight through. This particular story is about a Duke who needs to get married. He is at a house party to meet his perfect match but ends up falling for her companion. Sometimes love just happens, you know? Anyway it’s a lovely story, with engaging characters. A quick read. One star off for some contemporary phrases used. Several detailed steamy scenes in the last quarter of the book.
I received a free copy of this from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.
What a crankpot the Duke of Warrington is! His Grace is graceless, lacking in any social polish and an absolute anti social grouch. I actually kind of like him because he is how the inner me feels at times - when I am in my "I hate people" mode. He can probably act on it because he has status, and wealth to buffer him as well (whereas I have bills, and a job where I have to somewhat personable, so the grouch gets tamped down, cuffed, stifled, smothered, and buried deeply). Regardless, he does have the duty to find a spouse and carry on his family line, and because of that, he ends up attending attending a house party (a loathsome beast to the duke), to meet a young lady, Lady Marina. She is picked for him by his mother because she appears on the surface to be a perfect match for him, as she also seems to not enjoy the social whirl.
Lady Marina appears to be a very private, terse individual who cares more for libraries and books than people and parties, and her mother hires Juno Langston, a charming widow with social savvy, to help Marina develop better social skills to help her navigate the Marriage Mart. Her mother, Lady Wetherby, has her eye on matching Marina with the Duke, and she and Juno work to try to bring the match about at the Cosford's house party.
The Duke tries, but does not have a connection with Marina. But he cannot seem to stop thinking of the widow Langston. She is the opposite of what he considers his perfect match, being joyful and sunny. But you know what they say about opposites attracting. He is a dark, brooding man, who probably needs a sunny social butterfly, otherwise he would end up a cranky, lonely hermit.
I found this to be a fun, rather joyful but short story. I connected with Marina and the Duke, being at times the cranky and terse introvert, and could commiserate with them, but also understand that sometimes one needs the joy and sunshine in life (the hubby is my Juno) - even if one has to be dragged kicking and screaming out into it, and don't appreciate it until it happens. I also loved the characterization of Juno. She appeared to have had a disappointing marriage and a break in her relationship with her family, and despite her losses and lack of support, pulled herself up by her bootstraps, and developed strength and independence, through her own resources. Good for her.
I am curious as this is the first of a series, will there be more in the future about Lady Marina - I would love to see her come into her own, and out from under the thumb of her mother, and find someone who appreciates the treasure that is probably under that prickly exterior. Also, I am curious about the supposedly clumsy Gilford daughter as well. Finally, the implication was that Juno was the matchmaker, for Marina, but obviously that was not true - does that mean that we shall see more of Cecelia Cosford in the future too - she seems a lovely character as well, who loves love.
A fun, and joyful novel, despite the obnoxious grumpiness of some!
Summary Since being widowed less than year into her marriage, Juno Langton has found joy and a career in helping young ladies prepare for their Season. She accompanies her current charge to a house party with the purpose of helping match the young lady with the Duke of Warrington. Both the Duke and Marina are quiet, shy people and fail to make a connection. But when the Duke finds himself thinking more about Juno, he can’t deny she brings him to life. Juno isn’t looking for marriage, but she can’t deny the attraction between them. What starts as an attraction will grow to be much more!
Tropes: Widow, titled hero, class difference, Marriage mart, Opposites attract, Matchmaker, house party, grumpy-sunshine, Country setting
The Plot : The first part of the book was Juno trying to get the Duke and Marina, her charge, to make a match. I felt bad for them both as they clearly weren’t suited, even though their personalities were very similar. That time did allow the Duke and Juno to get to know each other, especially in the Orangery. I loved how the Duke spoke his true thoughts and feelings to Juno; he didn’t have a lot of angst about falling for her cheerful personality. Their banter back and forth was adorable and made me laugh several times. This was an easy read and I was glad there was no drama between Marina and Juno over the Duke as I kept fearing there might be.
The Heroine : Juno Langton is a cheerful, look at the sunny side of life person. After being disowned by her family for her first marriage and having said husband turn out to be a drunk who died less than year into her marriage, she found a way to still have a fulfilling life working with young ladies. She is optimistic and funny and the exact opposite of Dare.
The Hero : Dare, the Duke of Warrington is a grumpy, set in his ways man who sees no reason to pretend to enjoy anything or anyone. He prefers to spend his time alone and outdoors. He know he must marry so he tries to make it work with Marina, but he finds her companion annoying, too cheerful…and intriguing. He softens his edges around Juno and when he realizes she understands him better than anyone, he can’t let her go!
The Steam : Slow to build, but passionate when they finally come together!
Stand Out Moment : Probably when he appears in her room to some fun and just takes sweet and dirty to her!
Who Would Like This : Anyone who appreciates a fun, opposites attract trope turned passionate!
Final Thoughts : It was a great, quick read with a cute romance between the two main characters!
Darcy Burke has a talent for crafting a delightful historical romance, full of heart, steaming with chemistry and enchanted with endearing characters! This grump/sunshine historical romance is the start of a new series-The Matchmaking Chronicles. This romance is well paced, charmingly written and such a pleasurable start to a new group of romances.
This romance takes place at a country party where the hero, Dare-a duke, is hoping to find a wife and Juno, a ladies companion is hoping to help her charge make the perfect match. But little did Dare and Juno know that they would become fast friends who learn that they might have much more in common with each other than at first glance.
Not only do I absolutely love a house party, but I also love a grump/sunshine with a bit of a class difference thrown into the mix. I love that Juno and Dare have such an ease about them when they are in each other's company. I love that Dare only has eyes for Juno and that her being slowly opens him up in ways that he would never expect. I love that Juno might at first criticize his rigid ways but as she begins to discover his true being she can see he for the kind hearted and loving man he is. Watching two people open themselves to each other and trust each other is really rewarding. I also think that Darcy Burke, does a lovely job building up the chemistry between Juno and Dare and they both embrace their sensuality and growing feelings for each other in a beautiful and consensual way. I love that Juno's station in life, or her dreams to help young women find confidence in themselves become an issue. Dare and Juno both learn that in order to be together they don't need to sacrifice who and what makes them who they are.
Darcy Burke never disappoints, I always know I am going to get a deliciously sweet romance and be excited about future romances in her world. I would definitely recommend this new romance, it is such a wonderful story of two people who are truly made for each other and bring out the best in the other while fully supporting their hopes and dreams.
Thank you to NetGalley and Darcy Burke for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The start of a new series & once again the author has written a delightful romance where grumpy meets sunshine. The characters are well portrayed & have depth & all apart from Marina’s mother are likeable. I loved Dart from the moment at the house party when he voiced to everyone that he disliked house parties, he’s dour, grumpy, unsmiling & rigid. Juno is a widow who has made a life for herself & is a ray of sunshine. I loved how the pair were attracted to each other & how she gradually drew him out so that he smiled & then laughed plus the sexual chemistry between them was electric. A short but riveting read, which I loved & it left me smiling My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
The Rigid Duke by Darcy Burke Matchmaking Chronicles #1
Lady Marina and the Duke of Warrington should be a perfect match. Marina’s mother wants a Duke for her daughter and as she is quiet a quiet duke should be perfect. The duke’s mother thinks Marina might suit her son and a good friend will have a house party for them to see if they are compatible or not. But…what if like does NOT attract like but instead a quiet person needs just the opposite to step out of their rigid shell?
What I liked: * Mrs. Juno Langton: widow, alone, has made a good life for herself, helps others, sees to her own needs and enjoys helping young ladies prepare for the season. * The Duke of Warrington, Alexander Brett or “Dare” to his family and friends: rigid, controlled, growly, a curmudgeon, forthright – in the extreme, and perhaps not as locked-in as he thinks he is * Lady Marina: young, quiet, reserved, difficult to get a handle on BUT perhaps she will show up in a future book after she finds “herself” and finds a way to deal with her mother * Lady Cosford: hostess of the house party, fun, friendly, helpful, matchmaker * Dare’s mother: sees her son as more than the rigid person he shows the world and hopes he will come out of his shell * The Dare sees Juno at first versus how he sees her at the end of the story * That it was short, sweet, and made me smile…more than once. * Knowing that there are more books in the series to look forward to.
What I didn’t like: * Thinking about the expectations both young women and men of the ton were expected to live up to * How Juno’s parents treated her when she decided to marry a teacher * Not really a dislike BUT…would like to know how the couple are doing a year or ten after the story ends.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the book ~ This is my honest review.
This historical, slow burn, romance is well written and entertaining. Great historical details as usual by this author and it was very engaging and light hearted. It's set at a house party, so there's a bit of sneaking away and meeting in isolated places, plus Dare is grumpy and Juno is upbeat, so lots of fun. The romance is pretty steamy when the slow burn finally heats up. My thanks got to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC. 3.5 stars. Release date is March 8th 2022.
Maybe, I should just stop reading books none of GR friends have read because once again I've found myself thinking where the fuck all the 5 and 4 stars rating reviews are coming from. Did we really read the same book? Did we?
I do respect everyone's opinion, I do, but for me... Oh boy this was such a 'could have been so much better' kind of book and the only thing I truly adored about it was that it was a really quick read (`・ヘ´・-)
I gotta say, I'm not a big fan of 'the male lead changes because he meets the right woman' plot. There are times I like it when it's done well such as when the story has charm, humour and some good banter. Here? Both the characters and the story lacked SUCH depth, the book was really painfull to read at times.
I couldnt help myself to find the main characters rather wooden with no chemistry between them at all and story was sadly predictable and rather boring. And the secondary characters were so unmemorable I had to consistly remind myself whom was whom.
I'm not ashamed to say I'd have totally DNF'd this shit if it wasnt such a short story. Life is too short, fellas.
Overall; I should definitely choose the next book I read more carefully.
A delightful regency romp full of witty banter and a charming widow who takes an uptight rigid Duke and breaks down his defenses. A house party for the Duke of Warrington to meet the young Lady Marina turns into disaster when the Duke refuses to propose. Her companion, Mrs. Juno Langton, loses her job and references from the young lady's mother, but hold on... she may have won the Duke! Lots of snickers and steamy sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Special thanks to Zealous Quill Press for providing an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 3 stars!
I have to admit that I was initially a little worried that this would end up being a bit of a “love triangle” situation as Juno, as Lady Marina’s refinement tutor, is playing matchmaker to her and the Duke at the house party because they both don’t like parties or people so everyone thought they’d make a perfect match. Thankfully, there was none of that mess here because it was clear from the beginning that the Duke was basically besotted by Juno and Marina had zero interest in him. I appreciated that this was a low drama and low angst romance and although there was still the “third act conflict” that sees them go their separate ways, they also very quickly come to their senses so it’s resolved almost immediately.
I really liked Juno’s character and her openness about searching out and having multiple lovers as a widow, and her boldness in (eventually) making the first move! It’s not often we see heroines in HR be so sexually open, and not in a negative way either, and I found it refreshing. She was an extremely loyal ray of sunshine and it was easy to root for her. In contrast, the Rigid Duke or Dare, as he’s known to the people he likes, was the epitome of a grumpy H. He’s surly, intimidating, and hardly ever smiled—except in the presence of Juno, of course. Though he eventually cracks around Juno, there’s very little depth to his character and I found that a pity because usually the grumpy ones have some kind of painful backstory where we learn what made them that way, but Dare doesn’t get that and that’s just the way he is? They do have great chemistry though and could hardly keep their hands off each other; plus this Duke liked it a little dirty, which led to some pretty steamy scenes 🥵 This definitely ended up being more sex than plot and y’know, that’s totally okay—so if you’re looking for a historical romance that’s fast-moving and steamy, you’ll probably want to check this out! That said, this was a little too insta-love for me. Bearing in mind that the whole house party took place over the course of several days totalling (I think) one week, this surely was more insta-lust than love? But if you’re looking for a HEA, have no fear because you get one here!
Other than Juno and Dare, there are a few supporting characters who make several appearances but I particularly liked the house party’s host, Lady Cosford, who also had a similarly sunny disposition to Juno and who became a good friend to her. I honestly would’ve loved to get to know her more but sadly, I found the supporting characters to be very flat! Overall though, this was a fun and easy read that I finished in one sitting but certainly not my favourite of Burke’s books.
This novel has all the makings of a historical romance, complete with an enemies to lovers plot and the grump/sunshine trope, but it didn't hit quite the mark for me. Everything just seems to happen on too quick of a timeline to really believe in love declarations after only what amounts to about four days. Aside from that, neither character really jumps out from the page for me. The heroine and hero both seem mostly like blank pages, and the hero is known for being rigid but only has about twelve hours before he seems magically cured of that.
While the book is well written, it just doesn't really make much of the good elements that it has going for it.
ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
After being widowed shortly into her marriage, Mrs Juno Langton has found work by helping debutantes prior to their come out, and preparing them as a refinement tutor for marriage. Her latest charge, Marina, is shy, and her mother is adamant that Marina will marry well, and who else is better than Alexadner, Duke of Warrington. At a house party, Juno needs to do whatever it takes to bring the Duke and Marina together, or else suffer the wrath of her employer, but unfortunately the duke, also known as Dare, has no time for social gatherings, and seems to be wholly wrong for Marina. It doesn't help, either, that Juno is very much attracted to Dare, and he also seems to prefer spending time with her, rather than her charge.
I enjoyed this book. Juno and Dare were great characters, and both fought their chemistry, and had a difficult first meeting. It was clear that their attraction was too much to fight though, and even though they had different positions in life, Dare seemed to be the one to fight for the relationship the most. A very quick and enjoyable read!
A rigid/stuffy duke, a matchmaker and a house party. Sounds like the beginning of a bad joke but this story is so freaking good. So what does a Duke have to do to find a wife? Well, he needs to look on the right places. I love how Darcy can spin a story that makes us want to keep reading even when we reach the end. You know what is going to happen but the journey is so fun that smiles will happen.
Darcy is one of my favorite authors of romance during regency era, she always captures the era so well, with character that are so likable and this wasn't the exception, we follow our heroine who clearly loves her life and how independent she is, then we met our hero who is only looking for someone fitting of the title that he holds.
It has steamy romance, passion and lovable characters and who wouldn't want that.
****1/2 stars- Mrs. Juno Langton is employed by Lady Wetherby to be a companion to her daughter Lady Marina. She is to instruct and help Marina find a husband. Marina has no interest in marriage. She just wants to be left alone with her books. Juno will have a difficult time making Marina less shy and strengthening her confidence. Alexander Brett, Duke of Warrington and Marquess of Daresbury, hates social gatherings. He is invited to a house party where Marina will be attending. He needs a wife and he will go and meet Marina to see if they are have a connection and are compatible. This will be the perfect opportunity for Juno to help Marina secure a marriage proposal from the Duke.
Alexander, also known as Dare, is brusque and dour. He does not like surprises or anything that breaks his routine. Juno has nicknamed him the Rigid Duke. Juno spends time with Dare as she tries to get him to open up to Marina. As Juno and Dare spend time together Dare finds himself smiling and even laughing. This is something he has never done before. He finds Juno alluring and a temptation. The Duke is handsome and he suddenly becomes charming when in Juno’s company. He finds he is captivated by Juno and this irritates him. Juno is breaking through his rigid outer shell and tumbling down the wall that he has created around his heart. He does not understand his feelings. Juno is intrigued with the Duke but she has no desire to wed again. The Duke is always in control but with Juno he becomes unbalanced. She is the light to his darkness.
Dare is suppose to be getting to know Marina but all he can think about is Juno. I enjoyed Dare loosening up. Dare and Juno’s interactions were entertaining. I loved how Dare fell for Juno. Their unusual courtship will sweep you away. They have a sizzling passion when they are together. Their playful banter and subtle flirtations were a delight. Can he prove to Juno he is the right man for her? Will Juno follow her heart and marry Dare? Lady Cecelia Cosford was a fun supporting character. As the host of the house party she was entertaining. She befriended Juno and provided the perfect opportunities for Dare and Juno.
This was a quick and sweet novella. It was an awesome read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me interested from the first pages. It was easy to read and flowed well. The book will sweep you away! I look forward to reading the next book in the Matchmaking Chronicles. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thank you to the author and the publisher, Zealous Quill Press, for letting me read an ARC of this great historical fiction romance through NetGalley!!
"Juno absolutely loved a challenge"
"I also hope you find the woman who breaks through that rigid outer shell you wield so relentlessly"
"I need to manoeuvre myself next to the rigid duke"
Funny, witty, entertaining, hot, spicy, romantic ... this book was everything! If you're a fan of Bridgerton, than you should definitely check this book - hopefully a series soon enough - out now! A singular woman, strong, witty and beautiful -a goddess as he likes to say- and a very rigid but very hot duke ? I'm all in for it!! I loved every minute of reading this story, starting from when Juno's trying to arrange a marriage for someone else, because that's what she does for living, and he very much tries to be as frigid and bored as possible, up to the point when something changes and he is the first one realising it! I love when he is the first one realising what's happening... when he is the first one realising that some strange feeling is growing in him, that's a bit different from disgust or distaste!! Juno is amazing, Dare even more so and their dynamic is great to read about. Adding a bit of a forbidden relationship in the middle helped making it even more intriguing!! It seems like the matchmaking season started and I can't wait to read more about this stories, about this world and from this author!!
"I do feel a connection to someone. In fact, she drives me mad with her giddy smiles and forthright demeanour ... More than anything, I want to kiss her and see if she'll taste as divine as I expect"
"Because there are at least a dozen things that have come to mind ... that I should like to do to you in a private setting such as this"
"Juno had opened something inside him, and he's be damned if he'd let it slam closed"
