First sons inherit all. Third sons are promised to the church. Second sons do their duty and serve in the military—unless fate intervenes and turns their lives upside down.
Welcome to Second Sons of London, a new Regency Historical Romance series by bestselling author Alexa Aston, where seven men who are second sons lay claim to fabulous wealth and lofty titles and fulfill their destinies when they find their soulmates.
A self-assured earl who doesn’t like rules. A poised beauty mature beyond her years. Neither thinks they want or need love . . .
Major Owen Hasbury returns from the Napoleonic Wars as the new Earl of Danbury. He’s ready to enjoy life and make love to as many women as he can before settling down and siring an heir. His attitude irks his two closest friends, men who have come into recent titles and made love matches.
Louisa Goulding has a reputation as a bit of a bluestocking. She has served as her father’s hostess since her mother’s death years ago and has been an active part of the meetings in their home with her father’s War Office colleagues, giving her little time for social events. With the war over, Louisa wants to fully participate in the Season and finally live a life for herself, finding a husband who will give her children.
At the insistence of mutual friends, Louisa and Owen meet. She calls him out as a rake, telling him she won’t waste any time on him. But her beauty and intelligence intrigue Owen. He becomes friends with Louisa, even teaching her how to kiss, finally realizing the perfect woman is right before him.
Can Owen convince Louisa that he has changed—or will he lose her to another lord at the house party they attend together?

Award-winning and USA Today bestselling author Alexa Aston lives with her husband in a Dallas suburb, where she eats her fair share of dark chocolate and plots out stories while she walks every morning. She enjoys travel, sports, and time with her family.
Her historical romances bring to life loveable rogues and dashing knights, while her contemporary romances are light and flirty and sometimes contain a bit of suspense.

The third book in the series & whilst it could easily be read on its own Spence, Tessa, Everett & Adalyn from the first two books do feature heavily. Another very well written, engrossing captivating read with wonderful characters. I loved both Owen & Louisa, sparks fly between them but he’s totally in denial about his feelings until Louisa starts drawing attention from other men at Adalyn's house party & then he wonders if he’s too late. Louisa is a strong woman who is intelligent, caring & totally smitten by Owen until they argue. Do they resolve their differences? Well it is a romance but their journey to their HEA had me devouring this lovely book

Empowered by the Earl by Alexa Aston is the third book of the Second Sons of London. Major Owen Hasbury has returned from the Napoleonic Wars as the Earl of Danbury, a title he never expected to have as a second son. He is not ready to settle down, and much prefers life as a rake. This attitude bothers his two closest friends who have recently become happily married and wish the same for him. Louisa Goulding is a bluestocking. She has served as her father’s hostess and has had an active role in her father’s work for the War Office. Louisa doesn’t have much time for or care much for the Season, so when her cousins invite her to a house party, she goes. Louisa and Owen have mutual friends who insist on setting them up. Louisa doesn’t want to marry a rake, and she makes her opinion of Owen very clear to him. Despite this, Owen and Louisa begin a friendship that also features Owen teaching Louisa how to flirt—including how to kiss. Owen soon realizes the only man he wants Louisa to kiss—and marry— is him. He is determined to prove to Louisa that he is the one for her and that he has left his rakish ways behind.
Louisa and Owen have great chemistry. I loved how Louisa became more confident because of Owen, and Owen started to believe in love because of Louisa. I also really enjoyed the side characters. I will definitely go back and read the prior books in the series!
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.
Louisa Goulding has seen her two beloved cousins marry, and start families, and she's ready for her own future. After years being hostess for her widowed father, she's finally having a Season for herself, with the hope of finding a partner, but none of the gentlemen have caught her eye. When she's invited to her cousin, Adalyn's, home for the winter, and to prepare for the birth of her child, she meets Major Owen Hasbury, friend of her in-laws, and newly minted Earl of Danbury. Owen plans on waiting to get married, but knows that Adalyn will likely start matchmaking, and when he and Louisa meet, it seems he was right. Though neither think the other will suit - Owen is too much of a rake, and Louisa wants to marry for love, and children - the longer they spend together, as friends, it's clear that they are struggling to not blur the line between love and friendship.
Since reading the first two books in the series, I've been waiting for Louisa's story, and am so glad with how it turned out. She's put herself on the shelf while being her father's hostess, and now ready to marry, the men she meets are too concerned about their wealth or looks, and don't want an intelligent, older woman to marry. She needs someone she can talk - and argue - with, and who will challenge her, and not expect her to be a trophy wife. Owen is perfect for that, though they don't have the best first impression, nor though they see each other are a credible partner. I loved that Owen seemed to fall harder, first, and he was willing to fight to show Louisa that he was the one for her, but also willing to step aside if she decided she didn't want him. He never took away her autonomy or freedom, and rather praised her mind and intelligence more than anything. I'm not sure what the next books will bring - I don't think we've met any of their main characters, but I'm looking forward to them!
I received a copy of this from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion.
This is the third book in the Second Sons of London series, and the story of Owen and Louisa. Louisa is the cousin of Tessa and Adalyn, from the other two books. She is the daughter of a baronet heavily involved in the government, and as such, took on the hostess role for her father. She has developed a personality and intellect that fits in well with dealing with older men, and politics. But she is now older, in her mid-20s, and is not doing as well with the more socially minded, younger, marriageable men. Unfortunately, she is not enjoying her Season, especially now that she is on the look-out for a husband for herself. She also misses her cousins terribly, since they have each gone to their country estates, with their husbands.
Owen, after his brother falls into a coma following an attack, reluctantly leaves the army to take up the care of the Earldom, and inherits it when his brother succumbs to his injuries. But he finds them changed after their marriages. He is determined to not marry for a number of years yet, and wants to enjoy his bachelorhood, and is vocal about this, but afraid what this would mean for keeping his friendship with his married friends and their wives. Adalyn plans a houseparty and insists on his attendance. Owen, on hearing that there will be unmarried debutantes there, including her cousin Louisa, and other bachelors, suspects Adalyn of matchmaking and is clear about his bachelor plans.
But he and Louisa are attracted to each other. Owen continues to decry marriage and is vocal about wanting to be a bachelor and sow his wild oats, and Louisa is determined to look to the others to find herself a suitable mate, and Owen agrees to help her, but finds ultimately that he hates the idea of the other men being with her.
This is different from the other stories as Owen was always the more social of the three men, even as a child, and has clear plans to put off marriage and enjoy a variety of women in the mean time. He is clear about communicating this and does not plan on having the love matches that he sees his friends have. This sets up quite a bit of tension between Louisa and him, as she is determined to find a husband and start a family, having spent so many years putting it off for her husband. The house party offers her several options, but also forces Owen to see her with other men, and while he vows to help her find a suitable mate, it is hard for him as he is so attracted to her himself. So when Owen finally realizes that he wants Louisa for himself, he has a hard road to earn her trust, since she thinks he is such a bad risk as mate.
Another solid story of the Second Sons. I really enjoyed the tension set up between Louisa and Owen, and also the tension it all places on his relationship with his friends and their wives. It was hard for him to be the determined rakish bachelor while his childhood friends are in stable, happy marriages, and wish the same for him, and he fought against that, while still trying to keep those friendships, but alliances have changed with the marriages.
Owen is a Second Son, a major fighting Napoleon's troops. When a letter arrives from the family attorney telling him must take his brother's place as the Earl of Danbury, he ignores it for six months. Attacked and injured in London, his brother is in a coma and may die. A letter from the attorney to his commander forces the issue to sell his commission and return home. His brother passes away and he is now the Earl of Danbury. The mention of a wife turns him off of the subject. He wants to continue to be a rake in London. But the machinations of his best friend's wife sets the stage for an introduction to Louisa who rocks his world. Instead of helping her find a husband, he finally realizes he wants her for himself. If he wants her to trust him, he has to love her. Owen's resistance and jealousy is so funny, but he definitely knows his way around kisses, flirting and seduction. Nothing like a reformed rake falling to his knees. Heat level 3 🔥🔥🔥 I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. While I liked this book more than the first in the series which I DNF, it still wasn't a homerun for me. Owen is a second son who returns home from the army when his brother goes into a coma. He is now the earl and determined to enjoy his bachelor hood. Louisa is on the shelf as she has spent years as her father's hostess rather than at ton parties. I didn't like Owen. The only thing keeping them apart was Owen's insistence that he was going to wait years to marry. He just annoyed me. Louisa was just dull. The writing style also didn't work for me. The dialogue was weak and the description were too long. Ie how to play lawn bowls.
Another great book to add to the series, which I’m finding very much to my taste. Great writing style, one of the reasons I enjoyed Alexa’s books, they flow so well.
This was enjoyable and fun, especially the house party , loved Louisa in the last book, so in her own story she’s so much better, Owen I struggled with in places, his character frustrated me at times, though I understood his reasons for his feelings.
The whole plot and the growing chemistry with the two was excellent and so emotional at times. Very entertaining and great reading.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Alexa Aston has crafted a truly enchanting romance with *Empowered by the Earl*. This story of love, resilience, and self-discovery is beautifully written, with compelling characters and a plot that keeps readers hooked from start to finish.
The novel follows a spirited heroine determined to rise above her troubled past and an honorable Earl haunted by guilt yet yearning for connection. Their journey to love is filled with emotional depth, heartwarming moments, and a slow-burning passion that makes every interaction between them utterly captivating.
The most romantic moment comes when the Earl, deeply moved by the heroine’s courage and independence, surprises her in the garden under the moonlight. As he declares that her strength inspires him and that she’s not just his equal but the woman who has reignited his hope for happiness, the vulnerability in his confession is breathtaking. When he tenderly kisses her and promises to stand by her side no matter what, it’s a moment that will stay with readers long after the final page.
The chemistry between the protagonists is palpable, and their relationship grows naturally through trust, understanding, and shared dreams. Aston’s writing beautifully captures the emotions of two people learning to heal and love again. The historical details and secondary characters enrich the story, making it even more immersive.
*Empowered by the Earl* is a shining example of why Alexa Aston is a master of Regency romance. Fans of the genre will adore this poignant, romantic tale that celebrates love’s ability to empower and transform. An absolute must-read!

The Review Major Owen Hasbury, Earl of Danbury has returned to London to take up the earldom at the death of his brother. After being a soldier for years, he has no interest in marrying anytime soon and wants to enjoy being back in London first.
Louisa Goulding has been assisting her father ever since her mother died years ago. Her duties keeping her busy, she has never really had time to be part of society and find a husband. This season, however, every man she meet seemed immature and uninterested in her intellectual self.
When Louisa and Owen meet at a house party, there is definite attraction, but both dismiss the feelings. But spending time together, Owen makes Louisa feel beautiful and worthy of a love match, but Owen is insistent that he is not interested or ready for marriage. He instead offers to help Louisa refresh her riding skills and to help sort through the bachelors attending the house party...but watching the other men spend time with Louisa has Owen realizing he just can't lose her!
Ms. Aston knows how to weave a genuine romance in to a short story! And for being a fairly straight forward story...girl likes boy, boy not ready to be serious and needs some convincing...it was so fun to watch their romance bud and watch Owen kick himself for thinking he could walk away from Louisa! I loved seeing the characters from previous books in the series; it is always fun to see them years after their happy ever after!
Tropes Historical Romance, Regency Era, House Party, Country Life, Season/Marriage Mart, Gamma Hero, Rake Hero, Soldier/War Hero, Possessive/Jealous Hero, Protective Hero, Titled Hero, Bluestocking Heroine, Virgin Heroine, Spinster Heroine, Friends to Lovers, Forced Proximity, Sudden Nobility/Rags to Riches
Called back from the war to take over the earldom when his brother dies, Owen plans to go to London and have a fun time even if his best friends are happily married. He attends a house party before going to London and is determined to avoid the single woman. Louisa hopes to someday find a man who is interested in her, but she will not stand to be with a rake. While you know who eventually ends up together it was amusing to watch them deny it. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
Read this ARC via NetGalley. This is a wonderful romance - I love any romance where a man helps a woman (usually a “spinster”) see her own worth in the world and worthiness of love. Combine that with a reformed rake, and you have the makings of a great book. Louisa and Owen have a sweet banter between them, and while there is some drama and angst it is handled maturely.
This is my favorite of the series so far! I really liked the change of pace and a story in the country instead of during the season.
As with the previous books, I really like the characters. The focus on Louisa and Owen this time made for some fun. I like her intelligence and the fact that she has no problem defending herself. I think Owen is the most outgoing character and tends to act before thinking things through. As they say, opposites attract!
The relaxed house party and atmosphere added to the ease of romance and of course threw in some complications. Of course everyone eventually wants love and this book is no different.
I'm interested to see where the next book goes since we have already seen 3 of the second sons stories.
Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
Empowered by the Earl is book three in the Second Sons of London series. Each of these is based on the first born male is the heir, second born make is the military, the third born is for the priesthood. So each make child knows what his life is to be, unfortunately for them they are never trained on the off chance they are to take over in case something happens to the first born heir. It is sad that each second born son did not have the love of their family. Apparently their parents were not married in a love match but for what each could bring to the marriage of the families. As we discover love is not a priority for them.
Major Owen Hasbury has received several letters from his brother's attorney. He has chosen not to respond and chooses to remain at his position in the Napoleonic Wars. Owen has received another letter from the attorney stating due to his lack of response he has written to his Owen's commander of the situation at home and he is needed to return at once. Owen, furious at this turn of events, goes to the commander and lies that this is the first letter he has received. The commander tells he has a duty to return to care for the estate and his dying brother, the Earl of Danbury. His brother hasn't left the estate in good condition and is going to need help now that his brother has died and he is not the Earl of Danbury. He has always been a rake and is ready to enjoy life and make love to as many women as he can before settling down and siring an heir.
Louisa Goulding has a reputation as a bit of a bluestocking. She has served as her father’s hostess since her mother’s death years ago and has been an active part with her father’s War Office colleagues, giving her little time for social events. Now that war is over, Louisa wants to fully participate in the Season and find a husband who will give her children.
At the insistence of friends, Louisa and Owen meet. She calls him out as the rake he is, but she is drawn to him even after declaring he is not husband material. Owen can see beyond her beauty and intelligence which intrigues Owen, but he refuses to consider a wife since he does not want to be married anytime soon. He becomes friends with Louisa as he teaches her to ride among other things in preparation for a house party where they will meet other eligible people they might like to know.
Spence, Tessa, Everett & Adalyn from the first two books are wonderfully featured with their friendships being enhanced and relied upon. The relationship of Owen & Louisa is very entertaining as these are not your average characters as the sparks fly but are totally in denial about their feelings. This is a wonderful entertaining romance. Each book book is written with the possibility of another book with some of the same characters reappearing, which is something I like since I am already invested in them. Looking forward to more in this series.
Empowered by the Earl by Alex Aston is the third in her series about second sons. Major Owen Hanbury has been ignoring letters from the family solicitor for months. This time he has written to Owen's commanding officer, as well, and so he has no choice but to report to the man who will usher him out of the service and send him back home to run an estate that belongs to his brother. Will he even receive a salary? His brother has been in a coma for months and apparently is unlikely to awaken. He had been set upon by robbers when he was in the wrong place, the same situation in which Ev's brother had been killed, which made Ev a duke. He is contemplating contacting Ev when the man appears, with an invitation. He is to come to tea and meet Ev's new wife. She is lovely, and they are in love, but Owen has no wish to find himself in the same place. At tea he meets Adalyn who immediately starts scheming to find him the wife he doesn't want. Then he meets Louisa, who if he wanted a wife, would be perfect. They agree to watch each other's backs at the house part coming up and to be friends.
Like most reluctant suitor tropes, this is a rocky journey to love, which he almost messes up before all comes aright. He doesn't like any of the men at the party. None are suitable for Louisa. He doesn't really care for any of the women either. He is not looking for a wife. As he watches Louisa with other men, he slowly realizes he is making a mistake: that he wants her, indeed, loves her. Louisa is trying, but none of the men at the party are Owen, and no matter how much she wants a husband and children, she can't settle. It is a very character driven novel and very entertaining, watching them make every effort to not be together. It is not a new story or very different, but it is enjoyable and very readable.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Empowered by the Earl by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #dragonblade #alexaaston #empoweredbytheearl
A follow-on from the first two books in this series, this romance is nevertheless a standalone. Two stubborn characters refuse to be manipulated into marriage and it is with reluctance that they agree to accept an invitation to a house party. When Owen Hasbury discovers that his brother has died as a result of head injuries and is the new Earl of Danbury, he determines to hold out for as long as possible before finding a wife, as the example set by his own parents is not one he aspires to. However, his friends and their wives have other ideas. Louisa Goulding, on the other hand, grew up much too quickly, taking on tasks for her father that far outweighed her youth. She has learned to entertain, speak intelligently with senior officials at the War Office, plays bridge with expertise, and is well-read. None of these attributes win her the praise and attention of the young bucks in society, most of whom have no clue how to converse with an intelligent woman. She has two failings: firstly she is unsure of herself when it comes to horse riding and secondly, her dancing skills leave a lot to be desired. Tasked with giving her some riding lessons, Owen reluctantly agrees to take on the task, but when Louisa picks up on his attitude, he realizes he has to do a whole lot better. Riding lessons lead to dancing lessons, which in turn leads to lessons in flirting, and therein lies the crux. Once that line is crossed, the reluctant pair spiral down into a vortex of love. The novel ultimately comes to a good conclusion, bringing smiles to their friends' faces. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Owen Hasbury the new Earl of Danbury after fighting in the wars and selling his commission decided that he would enjoy his single life. Both his best friends had left the military life to take up titles and both found themselves beautiful wives who they loved to distraction but he didn’t want that. He wanted to enjoy and live his life as a single man for a number of years until he decided to settle down. He had no interest in love but he did feel a little envious of the relationships his friends had formed.
Louisa Goulding cousin to his two best friends wives, would like to settle down and have a family but is quite practical in that she doesn’t expect love. On meeting Owen whilst staying with her cousin, is not impressed and although attracted to him, can see him for the rake he is. Thrown together, they form a friendship and Owen teaches her how to kiss and flirt which goes beyond just kissing, but still he won’t accept that Louisa is for him even though his friends see they are the perfect match.
Louisa has feelings for Owen but knowing he doesn’t want to settle agrees to keep an open mind to meet different men at her cousin’s house party. Owen agreeing to help, finds something wrong with all of them and doesn’t like the idea of Louisa kissing anyone but him! He soon realised that he’s jealous and is in love with Louisa but has he left it too late?
A beautiful love story with just the right amount of historical reference and added steamy moments which compliment the story line. This is the first of the series I have read so I will definitely be reading the first two.

Alexa Aston continues her streak of never letting me down! So far this series has set itself apart from previous series by having you know both the lead characters (or at least know of them) prior to getting their love story. As much as I liked Owen, I was really excited to get to learn more about Louisa. We have gotten smal bits about her in the previous two books in the series and just from that you knew she deserved someone amazing. It was also so nice to have a book where the female characters actually support one another. Even though the other ladies at the house party are also looking for husbands there is not really any animosity between them. I found even Miss Rexford to be likable - I appreciated her honesty and the way she really just did her own thing. I would love to find out what happens with Miss Peterson - maybe we will see her again in book 4 or 5? Back to the love story, of course we know how the book is going to end but I loved the journey each character made throughout. Seeing Louisa gain her confidence and spread her wings when really given the chance was wonderful. I thought everyone was a little overly tough on Owen. He had just returned from the war and taken up his responsibilities as the Earl and all they cared about was making him just like them. I love Tessa and Adalyn but they did annoyed a little in the way they talked to him. Can't wait for book 4!
3rd book of the series and 3rd book I’ve read from this author (I started with 1st book of this series in order).
A much improved story and development of plot and characters than the first 2 books in this series which just lay flat.
That being said however, if you are looking for scorching heat you will not find it here. There was at least a little bit of a slow simmer till 85% through when you finally get some heat that turns out to be perfunctory in nature. “Had his way with her…” I’m sorry but we are all adults here and if you can’t write heated romance scenes of a sexual nature without being dull and tepid then well just why bother?
It seems the author has problems with creating plot strife that isn’t easy in nature and then seems to be magically fixed by the next or even same chapter.
So why am I still reading as this is the 3rd book of the series? I like the idea of this group of second sons and them being friends. This series could have so many possibilities and the author could grow into actual descriptive sexual heat. The plots could get deeper. The author could actually make me get “the feels” but as of yet it hasn’t happened.
The best I can say is that it is slightly improving in the series but I really do like more depth from an author.
Now that the first 3 sets of main characters are sorted I’m wondering what is next for the last 2 unwed second son’s characters.
Reluctantly I will plod on just because of the curiosity but I do hope this author has more depth and heat to her writing because right now I wouldn’t recommend this author to anyone.
The following are my thoughts as I read this book. Owen Hasbury…a major, not very close with his older brother the Earl of Danbury, plans to live his life in the military. Louisa Goulding…niece of Lord and Lady Uxbridge, previously spent most of the Season acting as a hostess for her father, participating in her first full Season. Wow, the H is really not close with his brother and continues to ignore letters being sent on his behalf. LOL, the H’s two best friends are now happily married and he has mixed feelings about it. Oh I remember this Duke and Duchess of Camden. Oh the h is not enjoying the Season as she thought she would. The h has come to visit her cousin, the Duchess of Camden and attend a house party. The MCs have finally met and the h does not like the H, but he finds her intriguing. The MCs have spent a little time together and formed a light friendship. The H has me laughing out loud with his inner thoughts. Oh no one of the gentlemen the h is interested in is not a gentleman at all. Now the H has had an epiphany, LOL. I figured Miss Rexford was trouble. Woohoo, the h is not to be trifled with at all! Love prevails in the end. This is from the Second Sons of London series Book Three. I realize now that I forgot about the h when she was introduced in previous books so it was nice to see her with her own love story. There is definitely some steam.
Like two of his friends before him, Major Owen Hasbury is called home to England to inherit his family’s title. He is the new Earl of Danbury. He intends enjoy himself and sow his wild oats for a few years before he marries and sets up his nursery. Louisa Goulding has taken care of her father’s household and been his hostess since her mother died. She would like to marry and have a family, but the season, her only one, was not kind to her. Even though they are taken with each other when they meet at Ev’s estate, they do not suit, do they? The plan is that Owen will help her find a suitable match. In the meantime, her cousin Addie has another plan, match Louisa and Owen. Which plan wins?
This an entertaining addition to the Second Sons series. Characters from the first two books are here and add to the fun. The hero and heroine are intelligent and stubborn, and whether they like it or not, perfect for each other. The story is fun with a bit of trouble, but things work out the way they should. Enjoyable story, wonderful characters, happy ending. I recommend it.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
This is Book 3 of The Second Sons of London series. I have been reading this series from the beginning and have been loving it and this latest installment also did not disappoint. Owen returns from the war and is now the new Earl of Danbury. He is ready to embrace that life and enjoy all the rakish activities that go along with it. Louisa is known to be somewhat of a bluestocking. She has been helping her father in the War Office and now that the war is over, she is ready to fully participate in the Season. When her and Owen meet, she calls him out on his rakish ways. He in turn is captivated by her and they slowly become friends. The sparks between them are strong but Owen denies the feelings taking root inside him. That is until Louisa starts attracting the attention of other suitors. Owen needs to reveal his feelings before it's too late. The story was charming and enjoyable and Owen and Louisa were simply wonderful together. I also enjoyed the witty banter between them. The story was engaging and entertaining and Ms. Aston did a nice job with vivid descriptions which really made the story and characters come to life. Another wonderful addition to the series! I received a complimentary copy from Dragonblade Publishing via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoy Alexa Aston's Second Sons series, and this delightful third book in the series was a really fun read. Louisa, the heroine of this book, was very likable. I was a little confused how she had such bad luck in London, but at a house party was the #1 catch. Small thing though, she was just as likable as her cousins Tessa and Adalyn, from the first two books. The hero, Owen, I also liked but a little less. I was annoyed with him, but Alexa Aston achieved her goal because even his good friends were annoyed with him! I thought this book was entertaining and had some really good lines, which I really enjoyed. I liked the dialogue and arguments between Louisa and Owen, and their story. I love a house party trope, so this one was really fun for me! I also liked a continuation of the characters from the previous two books in this series, they are all so likable they really added to the enjoyment of this book. I hope we get to continue to see with the other seconds sons of the group. This was an entertaining, sweet read. Thanks to Netgalley, I received this as an ARC and all my feedback is my own.
An endearing story of friendship and love. The second sons bond brings us a series of strong, stubborn men who are blind to their need of love. These men have been groomed to loyalty in the military and yet believe they look for marriages void of love for themselves. Of course, they quickly find themselves blindly in love with strong-willed independent women despite their best intentions. This is what happens yet again when Owen comes home to become the Earl of Danbury. Meeting Adalyn’s cousin Louisa, the attraction is instant, the friendship growing quickly, passion heating the pages and love sneaking up unexpectedly (only Owen, everyone else saw it coming). The back and forth between all the characters was amusing and charming. Of course, misunderstandings are expected and add to the overall angst of feelings unexpressed. I enjoyed getting to revisit with Adalynn & Everett and Spence & Tessa, each of these couples have been a delightful read. Alexa Aston writes heroines that are easy to love and Hero’s who make you root for them. A delightful blend of humour, heat and love.
An erotic regency that is not meant to be realistic with characters that are not particularly likable. Most notably, the characters moral behavior is atypical of time period in their complete lack of concern for scandal and ruination. The “respectable” heroine regularly went off with suitors without a chaperone and encouraged 3 different men to kiss her for lengthy periods of time without any concern of being discovered and considered compromised. The hero longed for her, but did not make an effort to partner her or interact with her during most of the 2nd half of the novel even though he was jealous she was spending time with other men. Some of the explanations of extraneous subjects were too lengthy and repetitive. Finally, no matter how mad I was at my husband I would never knee him in the testicles. If I did, he would not brush it aside like the hero did. I still give it 3 stars if you don’t mind the smut because the characters, plot, and romance were entertaining if not a little weird.

Parts of the story were predictable and I wanted more suspense. Near the end you knew what was going to happen before it played out.
It was nice to catch up with the character's from the previous stories. Book 1 was more enjoyable - 4 stars. Even though book 3 of the series, it is a standalone.
I liked the smartness of the h and how she handled herself. The H doesn't want to marry for years and wants to sow more wild oats. He fights his attraction to the h - really a cookie cutter story and I hate to say that. One surprise twist was one of the men at the party, did like how the h handled him.
Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 4 out of 5 described twice.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, enjoyable epilogue and some steam. Small detail on age of a toddler - one place 6 months another 7 months - otherwise editing not a problem. (ljb)
"Lord Danby had to be the most devastatingly handsome man she had ever met." Thus was Louisa's first meeting with Owen and it escalated from there!
A wonderful addition to this delightful series as the second sons of aristocrats, become head of their families. Each of the heroes were in the war together and strong friends and as each find them in their new positions, each finds a wife.
Owen was determined to continue to sow his wild oats for awhile and eventually settle down. Louisa had been a helpmate to her father, who was involved with aspects of the war and very intelligent. While wanting to marry and have a family, she could not tolerate the men who could not accept she was no simpering miss!
As these two are thrown together, it is evident, a strong spark is building, so sit back and enjoy the journey!
The third book in this series finds Owen, a career Army officer, unexpectedly facing the task of becoming an Earl. This is an entertaining romance between two people who are not interested in marriage. The author has created a strong character in Louisa whom I really liked. Owen I found a bit harder to like. His rakish attitude was understandable given his many years in the army fighting the French but it was less endearing. I love how this is a standalone book but is extra enjoyable if you have the read the other books in the series. I especially appreciate that we get to closely follow up on the two couples and their families from the previous books. This book also contains one of my favourite things, a heartwarming epilogue. All in all, this is another great read in this series.
Major Owen Hasbury is a second son. For the highest in Society that marks him as the spare. He and his friends have that in common, and is usual for those like them joined the army.
After the death of his brother he finds himself inheriting the title. Unlike two of his friends, he has no intention of marrying, he will enjoy himself first.
Louisa Goulding has spent most of her adult life as a hostess and helper to her father. Now it's time to live for herself.
This is a happy go lucky historical romance. All the characters are good friends and have been for years. It very easy to fall in love with them. There might not be too many surprises, but it's definitely well worth reading.
How I love this series. Second sons have a terrible time living in their world of entitlement. Either forgotten or sent to the Army to fight for the King. War is all that Major Owen Hasbury has known and that makes him just like his friends. They all joined the service to serve against Napoleon and find that when called back to England, after their older brothers have died, a hard adjustment to the title. Just like his friends, now Owen must take the reins of title, become married and produce an heir. But that is not his plan, until he meets Lady Louisa. Her life has not been easy, either. Just how are they going to adjust to what society has planned? I loved reading this third book of the series and found that I could not put it down.
