The PDF version of “Anatomy of a Set Up” is actually authored by two people: Bud Allen and Diana Bosta. At just 50 pages in length, this paper clearly lays out how criminals use manipulation and coercion in prisons. These tactics occur regularly in jails and prisons, but are not limited to these institutions. In fact, these tactics are also favored by criminals and criminal organizations on the ‘outside’ (e.g., KKK, neo-Nazis, etc.).

The authors really clarify how set-ups are run, from pre-set-up to the conclusions. I particularly appreciate how the authors included various examples and 3 full case studies to illustrate not only what happened, but in order to teach readers how to identify each step in the set-up process.

This is an excellent paper. Even though it’s dated to 1978, the same types of set-ups occur today. I recommend this paper to everyone!
