Rate this book
Three years ago, Lift asked a goddess to stop her from growing older--a wish she believed was granted. Now, in Edgedancer, the barely teenage nascent Knight Radiant finds that time stands still for no one. Although the young Azish emperor granted her safe haven from an executioner she knows only as Darkness, court life is suffocating the free-spirited Lift, who can't help heading to Yeddaw when she hears the relentless Darkness is there hunting people like her with budding powers. The downtrodden in Yeddaw have no champion, and Lift knows she must seize this awesome responsibility.

I’m Brandon Sanderson, and I write stories of the fantastic: fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers.

The release of Wind and Truth in December 2024—the fifth and final book in the first arc of the #1 New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive series—marks a significant milestone for me. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be. Now is a great time to get into the Stormlight Archive since the first arc, which begins with Way of Kings, is complete.

During our crowdfunding campaign for the leatherbound edition of Words of Radiance, I announced a fifth Secret Project called Isles of the Emberdark, which came out in the summer of 2025. Coming December 2025 is Tailored Realities, my non-Cosmere short story collection featuring the new novella Moment Zero.

Defiant, the fourth and final volume of the series that started with Skyward in 2018, came out in November 2023, capping an already book-filled year that saw the releases of all four Secret Projects: Tress of the Emerald Sea, The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Sunlit Man. These four books were all initially offered to backers of the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time.

November 2022 saw the release of The Lost Metal, the seventh volume in the Mistborn saga, and the final volume of the Mistborn Era Two featuring Wax & Wayne. Now that the first arc of the Stormlight Archive is wrapped up, I’ve started writing the third era of Mistborn in 2025.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, four of the five Secret Projects, and various novellas, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians, which had its final book, Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians, released in 2022. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the three stories in Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. These two novellas are also featured in 2025’s Tailored Realities. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart, The Emperor’s Soul, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Sample chapters from all of my books are available at brandonsanderson.com—and check out the rest of my site for chapter-by-chapter annotations, deleted scenes, and more.

As far as the audio goes, as always, the Graphic Audio Productions are Awesome!

Lift is still the most annoying character Sanderson has ever written though... Still, the information for the series is important and it is still Sanderson - he can make even a very annoying character a part of a very good story. I recommend the Audio for re-reads of big and biffy books like this series tends to have, because it is better to get everything and you just can't get it on one read. The Audio is a grate addition, not substitution for the book itself, in my humble opinion:)

It was just alright for me. Lift was enjoyable, sometimes obnoxious but still had a great time. Loved her interactions with certain characters I will not mention due to spoilers. Overall an enjoyable book.

I loved this even more this time. I also might have cried reading the final scene with Darkness. 😭

Ok, so I've read like a lot of books between goodreads reviews which is... totally not because I forgot to write the reviews. Also, posting reviews has been really wonky for me, goodreads keeps not accepting them. Anyway, this book slapped, and Lift is great (one of the best characters in the series), would really have loved more from her perspective in the future books, but I guess there's still time for that.

"No stealing souls, now. We ain't here for souls. Just a little thievery, the type what never hurt nobody."

"We'll make an Edgedancer out of you yet."

"The difference between a successful thief and a dead thief is knowing when to escape with your takings."

"Wow. Well then, Gaw. I don't talk to myself because I'm crazy."
"No?"
"I do it because I'm awesome."

"You really are crazy," Gawx whispered.
"Nah. Just bored."

"Why bother?"
Why indeed? "Someone has to care," she said, starting down the hallway. "Too few people care, these days."

"Without the law, there is nothing. You will subject yourself to their rules, and accept the dictates of justice. It is all we have, the only sure thing in this world."

"Edgedancer," Lift said. "I don't know what that is."
"They were once a glorious order," Darkness said, walking her down the hallway. Everyone ignored them, focused instead on Gawx. "Where you blunder, they were elegant things of beauty. They could ride the thinnest rope at speed, dance across rooftops, move through a battlefield like a ribbon on the wind."

"Something is wrong, mistress. Something in the world. I can feel it."

"You sure are dumb some of the time, Voidbringer."
He sighed.
"Don't worry," Lift said. "I'm dumb most of the time."

I thought this book was performed well and was really pretty good overall. I thought it was a bit weak that such a large proportion of the book was a repeat of what was already in WoR, but I guess it's necessary to make this a standalone story. I found Lift a little grating at times (mostly when she's talking about her 'awesomeness' which forcefully ejects me into 2008), but I liked her character development. Overall I'm glad I read this book since it's given me more context for Oathbringer. Would recommend.

Meh! This one wasn’t bad, just kinda like an extended side story in between parts in a main Stormlight book. Lift is pretty deliberately annoying, and there isn’t too much going on with the main characters in this one. An easy skip if you don’t want the lore, but even if it wasn’t my favourite I don’t regret reading it because I do like to know random lore and there are a few big-ish reveals or information drops that can enrich the experience in this.

4/5

A good short story in between books 2 and 3. I knocked off a star because I just could not jive with the main character, Lift. She got better towards the end, and there was some good character growth there, but I was thankful this was just a four hour audiobook from her perspective and nothing longer.

I really love Wyndle, Nale is one of the most interesting Heralds, I think Edgedancers are really cool + the Szeth glimpses are nice.

But my GOD Lift is annoying.

Great job by the GA team as usual. 9 pancakes for them.

Está mais para um 4,5 mas ainda assim é uma boa história, curtinha e direta. A protagonista é meio chatinha mas a pessoa se acostuma, principalmente a medida que a história dela vai sendo contada e esclarecida

The Graphic Audio is VASTLY superior to the standard audiobook. No shade to Kate Reading, but I despise her interpretation of Lift.

A novella about one of the characters in the main Stormlight Archives. It makes me want to re-listen to entire series again!
