Mariah Talbot seems to lead a charmed life. Successful and talented, she is an interior designer in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and, by all accounts, is fulfilling her dreams. But appearances can be deceiving. Few people know the truth about her tragic past and why she guards her heart so fiercely, or the fact she is still very much in love with a ghost.
Andrew Maddenis a partner in one of Boston’s elite law firms. Bracing himself for a confrontation on his commute to work one morning, the last thing he expects is to be captivated by the woman who emerges from her car. Mariah is unlike any woman he has ever met, and their attraction is instant. But as he soon discovers, there is much more to her than meets the eye. He clings to the hope that with time, she will come to trust him completely.
But time is precious and fleeting. Neither of them could have predicted the bizarre twist of fate that alters the course of their lives forever. Only when Andrew embarks on his own journey, unraveling the haunting secrets of Mariah’s past, does he finally come to understand that love never dies…and neither does the soul.
Considering the books I have written, you may not think me a likely fan of Lady in the Woods. It’s true, romance is not a subject with which I am particularly well versed. However, when I met Ms. Bluni, and we had the opportunity to casually, even somewhat nervously, discuss books, stories, and writing, her eyes morphed into the look she gives on the back of her book—haunting—knowing. The story begins with Mariah and her aging family dog. In a sense it ends that way too. These bookends of endearment were solidly crafted. During the books beginning I felt engaged and contentedly confused. Through the middle chapters I was unsure what would happen to each well developed character and how they would all fit together. Through the last ten or so chapters, I smiled, cried, cheered, and enjoyed that sweet melancholy that only good writers can capture on the page.
The Lady in the Woods is a beautiful debut novel with characters so real, they felt familiar. The story is so compelling I raced through it, and then wished I'd had a more leisurely read when it ended too soon. Anyone who has experienced loss will no doubt find comfort here, and those who appreciate great writing will definitely not be disappointed!
an extremely easy, fun, short read to start off the new year. thought it was going to be a emily henry-esque romance book but turned out to be completely different in a great way!!
Besides being a truly engaging love story and fantasy, "The Lady in the Woods" is also a warm meditation on loss, remembrance, and, ultimately, healing-highly recommended!
