Absence doesn't always make the heart grow fonder.
Matt is inside Maggie's head, and their oddly dangerous frenemies are gone for the time being, but their troubles are only just beginning. Cyrilla is out of commission, and some young witches are setting themselves up to be her successors...and courting Cole in the process.
Which annoys Maggie, given that she's his girlfriend now.
It's complicated.
Maggie doesn't have any interest in taking Cyrilla's place, but when she hears that a magical bounty hunter is preying on the children in her community, she's sure as hell not going to let him get away with it.
Tracking him down requires her to go to James Shalton for help. Cole's father. The guy who might or might not have killed Cyrilla. Who might or might not have it out for Maggie.
Maggie and her ghost brother Matt are at it again in the second book of the series. Their paranormal investigation team is trying to find out what happened to 11 missing, magical children and the clock is ticking.
Although she’s a new author, Norcross writes like a seasoned pro and has delivered two great books in a row. Well written and deeply engaging from beginning to end, you won’t be able to set this particular book down until you reach the last word. At that point, you will simply want more.
While the first book set the stage, this story is much more like your classic PI “yarn.” The “catch,” so-to-speak, is that it has been wrapped in a fantasy setting which just so happens to be plunked down in the middle of what we “mundane” folks like to call the “real” world.
As such, each of these books, individually, makes up a neat little package nicely wrapped and capable of standing on its own. There’s most definitely continuity between them with ongoing subplots, but nothing so drastic that requires reading one before the next, so feel free to jump in where you like. This particular volume would be a great start.
This tale is heart-wrenching and poignant, leaving you wanting to sympathize with the villain as much as the heroes, which is difficult when children’s lives are on the line. Go figure.
Not all is at it seems, at first. Nonetheless the ending comes as no surprise, but you’ll still be on the edge of your seat as the action unfolds. So grab a cup/glass/bottle of your favorite beverage, pick up this book, sit back and be prepared to ENJOY!
I liked this one more than the first, and I feel like the story and characters are coming along. I wonder if I'm the only one thinking James and Maggie make more sense as a couple than Cole and Maggie do? Maybe it's because she actually spent time with James in this book--it seems all Maggie does with Cole is eat, have sex, and sleep. This plotline would have been perfect for them to get real bonding time as a couple, as well as show Cole one of the ultimate conclusions to the magical elitist attitude. I'll be interested to see if and how that all resolves...
Maggie has to try and find a bunch of children that disappeared over night and at the same time try to work out her relationship problems. I really enjoy the sibling interaction in these books and also enjoy her friends. The books have lots of action in them and keep your interest from beginning to end. I am looking forward to the next story.
Congratulations to Phillipa Norcross and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such intexresting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Second book is more fun than the first, probably due to everything flowing along with less introduction. In any case it was full of action, adventure, some surprises, and a really good story best of all. I have enjoyed this series so far and definitely recommend it.
This is the second book in the Great Lakes Investigations series. Magical children are going missing in this story and Maggie is on the hunt to track them down and bring them home safely.
Like the first, this story was engaging and entertaining. I wasn't as thrilled about the side story going on with Cole, in this one, but it appears to have wrapped up well.
Yay, Ferrow had more of a place in this story, she was more involved in the actual investigations and not just an accessory to the office and we actually saw a bit of her Naga magic. Cole's father was absolutely my favorite in this book though.
Overall, I enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next one in the series. And as per usual, Amanda Ronconi was amazeballs.
Amazing loving the twists and turns in the story line talk about straddling two worlds lol. Brilliant love it and high recommend this series on to the next one woo hoo
I've never heard of a shifter story quite like this! Great world with delightful characters as well as action and mystery... Definitely a big thumbs up and on to book 3!! Howard S
I find this series to keep me interested. The story always keeps you wondering were it is going next. I look forward to the next addition to the series
I’m enjoying the series more with the 2nd book. Our protagonist is turning into a true heroine & other than the last half of the book feeling a bit rushed it flows well. While I hope for more books in the future I can say that this one has a satisfying ending so I’m glad I can see that there’s at least one more book!
19AUG2025 Update: I decided to read the series from the beginning before I started the book I finished on back in 2022. If anything it’s been more fun than the first time! 😀
