This was a very good read, because nothing turned out the way I expected it to. When you've read a number of stories in this genre, some tropes became familiar and expected. Numerous times whilst reading this story and a new character/object was introduced, I expected it to be used a certain way (eg., to face slap other people), but it never did - events and mysteries always unfolded differently than what I expected, which kept the story engaging and interesting.

I liked how the story didn't have a brainless love rival for the ML, I liked how the story had other non-evil and supportive female characters, I liked how in-sync the main couple was without stupid miscommunication, I liked how everything never unfolded the way I expected it to.

The romance kept apace with the plot, so it never felt like it came out of left field. Even in the middle of dire situations, the author made sure to include gestures or words that showed the main couple's growing affection, so their romance felt natural.

The plot itself was layered well - small mysteries peeling away to reveal bigger mysteries, over and over until it revealed the entire picture. On that front, the execution was amazing.

The only thing I struggled with was the amount of names... The setting is well thought out, with the different states having their own royal families and circumstances... But whenever a state name or another royal family was mentioned, I had to pause and try to remember who that was, again. And I didn't even switch stories in the middle, I read just this story from beginning to end.

I really recommend this - the translator did a wonderful job.

I absolutely love this story, especially the strong main characters and how they subvert the typical romance tropes. It highlights how in reality, people act based on selfish motivations and sometimes, good people are forced to bad ends. I love how everyone in this story has their own goal that they strive for - it feels very realistic even if everything is taking place in a fantasy novel.


Perhaps most surprising is that the female lead and male lead are not good people, and sometimes enable each other to do some unsavory things. However, in the end, they both contribute to making each other stronger. While one might want to protect the other, when they fall short, the other is there to help them jump over the gap.


I also love how the author ties up pretty much every loose end. I feel like we could learn more about the arcane, but we know enough for a pretty solid backstory.


The last thing I really appreciate is the thoughtfulness that the author put into the brother character. He's not gendered confused, he's just borrowing a face that makes him feel powerful and free. He becomes stronger by learning how to integrate that into his real face. In the end, it's about learning to be comfortable in his own skin, not twisting himself into a gender stereotype.

Read this story on a friend's rec. I liked it but didn't love it. Generally I enjoy a story with a good romance and engaging plot, but for some reason, I couldn't get into this one and kept getting distracted while reading. It took me longer than usual to finish.

It follows Sang Yuanyuan, a famous actress, as she transmigrates into a novel as a character with the same name. The original character dies in the very first chapter, but she racks her brain and figures out a way to stay alive by invoking the name of You Wuming, a genuine madman who has no scruples and even killed his own family and is feared by all.

Initially the FL fully relies on her acting skills when she pretends to like You Wuming, but as they spend more time together, she herself starts questioning how much of it is acting and how much of it is real. I enjoyed the story more once the feelings developed, and they genuinely want to help each other rather than doing it for their self interest.

The world in the novel is a fantasy one where 18 different states, united under an emperor, have to constantly fight against demons invading their world from the abyss. The beginning of the story was a bit slow since it follows our main characters as they go to the front lines to fight. Later on, Sang Yuanyuan realizes there's more to her transmigration into the novel than meets the eye, and that there are many suspicious points including the insane luck that the male and female protagonists Han Shaoling and Meng Wuyou have, so she and You Wuming start investigating, only to realize there's a whole conspiracy connecting random events that don't seem related.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

To sum it up quickly, 20 years ago, a mysterious organization called the Temple of Heaven divined in a vision that the world would be destroyed in the future unless the og protagonists Han Shaoling and Meng Wuyou become Emperor and Empress. So they did everything in their power to control the future to match their vision, including replacing the current Empress's soul with a transmigrator and afterwards making her kill both her lover and son (the ML) and sending the FL's soul to another world to remove her as a love interest for Han Shaoling. The reason why the og protagonists seemed to have a golden finger is because every time they were in trouble, Meng Wuyou would shout for help into a mirror, and the folks in the Temple of Heaven would use their colorful power (called the power of destiny) to save them.

After the FL transmigrated to this world, she throws off all of the Temple of Heaven's plans by teaming up with You Wuming to act against pretty much all the other major players. Slowly but surely, they plan the deaths of other characters and orchestrate them in a way so that the blame falls on the Emperor, sowing distrust between the Emperor and her allies. Eventually they both become super OP and kill off all of their enemies and become the new rulers.

Like I mentioned at the beginning, the story wasn't able to hold my interest despite all of the complicated plot and reveals. Part of this is due to the fact that there are many battles scenes, which I really struggled to get through. I think another part is due to the fact that there isn't a solid cast of side characters. We're mostly following Sang Yuanyuan and You Wuming for the whole story, with negligible mentions of other characters, mostly from SYY's family.

I also think both characters got too OP by the end of the story. It started for You Wuming when he absorbed some holy fire that lets him refine anything, so after he obtains this ability, he can assimilate pretty much any power into his body. He starts with the heavenly thunder but eventually works his way up to refining all of the colorful power of destiny hidden underground in the iron cauldron. As for Sang Yuanyuan, she gets some pretty OP support abilities to heal and energize soldiers fighting on her side but cause poison damage to the opposing side's enemies. It was necessary for them to have these OP powers to beat their enemies, but it got a bit old seeing YWM incorporate anything their enemies throw at them into his own power.

At least I liked both main characters, and the romance between them was probably the best part of the story for me once it started. YWM isn't the bad guy that everyone makes him out to be. He has principles, but sometimes he just can't be bothered and it's easier to kill. SYY brings out the goodness in him, and there are multiple moments where he admits he changed his behavior because of her presence. By the end, they have absolute faith in each other and are completely sync'd up in their thoughts and actions. It was cute to read.

The writing is surprisingly funny too. One of my favorite themes across the story was how Sang Yuanyuan's cultivation manifests in ugly ways as chomper flowers and kelp bandages. Every time she reaches a new level, she gets hopeful and then gets disappointed again when she realizes her flowers are still just as ugly XP

Also, it cracked me up how You Wuming and his puppet are both suckers for money. His kingdom has traditionally been a poor one, so any money will help towards buying better equipment and weapons for his soldiers. They got so excited when SYY's flowers started pooping valuable jade crystals and were equally devastated when said jade crystals were consumed by SYY to further improve her cultivation XP

Here are some examples of the humorous writing I particularly enjoyed:

You Wuming has been stunned for a long time.

The expressions of the dog and the puppet are not much different from him.

A person, a dog, and a puppet squatted on the edge of the stone platform together with their mouths opened in exactly the same arc. The six eyes closely followed the bunch of flowers below, watching them gnaw through the spiritual veins one after another…

It was a boring process, but these three guys watched it with gusto, without blinking their eyes at all.

The small Chomper Flowers grows after swallowing the underworld demons——After they grow up, it begins to dismantle the spiritual veins and carry the crumbs——Then the next batch of small flowers continue to grow up——

The assembly line is completely formed. The two batches of that big and small flower alternate in an orderly manner. The action is extremely rhythmic and the connection is smooth and natural.

You Wuming tightened his arms: “Little Mulberry, hold firmly.”

She immediately summoned a bunch of ‘kelp’ and tied herself to his body like a bag of dynamite.

You Wuming: “…” This wife of his, is not a fairy at all. Really.

This was supposed to be the beautiful and picturesque scene of her wrapping her hands around his waist and with her long hair and clothes floating in the wind, but she just tied herself into a zongzi like this.

穿成短命白月光后，和反派HE了 is a great example of how you should write a Yandere love interest. 幽无命 is terrifying and he never ceases to be, but one grows to appreciate him as his layers and secrets are revealed. And he also learns to be emotionally healthier and less insecure as the plot progresses which makes him more endearing.

Usually when authors write a Yandere LI, the novel falls short due to a weak MC that can't really handle the yandere (or just plainly give in to the obsessiveness). I like that 小桑果 can not only take it and dish it, but also takes opportunities to get stronger while growing character-wise alongside 幽无命. I do appreciate her sick burn of the OGFL's "pick me girl" entitlement but am not sure if she herself is truly free of the golden fingers that leads often get.

She's a female lead that doesn't need love to live, just that circumstances have brought her into a romantic relationship, through a hole she dug of her own choosing. Slightly Stockholm syndrome vibes and a lot of crossed moral lines. Read at your own risk. 8/10

I'm not sure where to even start with this... FL and ML were such fun to read. Neither of them were the typical "kindhearted lead character" type. In fact, they were the ones often criticising others for their so-called kind but ultimately hypocritical words/actions! I think ML could be considered a yandere, which would fit given his less-than-healthy personality. And yet, throughout the story, he actually grew as a character while still remaining a yandere; it was so good to see proof of his mental health steadily improving as time went by.

Am I saying this is entirely thanks to FL? Yes, yes I am. And FL herself was rather refreshing. She made no bones about doing what she wanted or needed, even if it meant doing some dark things. And this did get pretty dark at times. The author did not shy away from people dying or being tortured or other gruesome things, like a counterbalance to all the nice things that did happen. It gave this book such a diverse amount of genres.

This did take some time to get into it, I'll admit. The first handful of chapters or so were slow going for me, though that may have been partly me getting used to the writing style. But at some point things just seemed to click and I found myself devouring several chapters a day. The romance was probably my favourite part. I was worried at first because it started off with FL's lie that she was in love with ML, and we all know that in fiction books, starting relationships out on lies was bound to blow up in everyone's faces sooner or later. And yet somehow, this never happened. There's no sudden moment of realistion where everything changes either. Instead you see FL and ML slowly learning to trust and support each other, until the end where they're practically inseperable. And the absolute best part? There's no OW/OM drama! <3

I did think the ending felt kind of abrupt, though I'm not sure how much of that was because of the writing style or because it had gone on for so long already that part of me just wasn't ready for it. Buuuut the 'what if' side story was both appreciated and somehow gave me a better feeling of closure.

I haven't read a good web novel like this in awhile.

It is definitely going to be in my most favorite novels of all time list.

Sang Yuanyuan, an oscar-winning actress, transmigrated into a novel after her death and she comes in contact with the ultimate big villain, You Wuming and fights with her wits and courage to survive.

You Wuming was an yandere but he was also so so cute that I wanted to put my hands on him to rub him violently. This man is the ultimate combination of kawaii, tsundere, yandere and op male lead or should say, villain.

Sang Yuanyuan was my favorite kind of heroine. She was mature, witty and had her own agency, most of all. She had her own weight beside You Wuming.

Sang Yuanyuan was the 'sheath' to You Wuming's sword, literally and metaphorically.

These two fought together side by side. They had incredible chemistry. I loved this couple! They were the ultimate villain couple who fights against the "good guys" and fate to reach their HEA.

The world-building wasn't the best I've read but the author was able to pull me in. The various states of this xianxia cultivation world, Cloud Realm, were explored one by one with individual characteristics and quirks.

None of the important characters were totally good or totally bad. Even the most hated Huangfu Jun has my respect along with that bastard, og male lead, Han Shaoling.

And of course, Sang Yuanyuan and You Wuming both had incredible dynamics. I also want a Duan Ming of my own. The puppet was also so cute.

If you hate white lotus Mary Sue female leads and overbearing scum male leads, then this is a great novel for you. The author also shares this hatred and we stan💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻

I love it.

The start was really slow and kind of boring/stoopid in sense that it was not so cleverly written and original (and translation was not good first dozen or so chaps but keep going, it will pay off fairy quickly). But boy oh boy, this story finished strong.

Not the literary gem like some special others but it had solid plot, funny characters and good pacing.

The last chapters, everything was just clicking together, all the loose end were wrapped up nicely, all those plot twists and revelations, the start of this story (and description of this story really) don't do justice to the second half of this book. Tbh, because I was not expecting those great parts, I was even more pleasantly surprised by them. No expectations do wonders, really. xD

There were a lot of moments that got me laughting loud, they were precious and cleverly written.
And not a small number of shockingly brutal scenes, so a little warning for those who will read this as funny love story.

Another small issue is character of ML. He is psycho so if you don't like rough starts of relationships, this one can be tough. But he had very solid character development and very good reason for why he is who he is. And he has bottom line, what a good villain, hehe. (Also, 100 % tsundere not just for our MC, but his loved ones people as well.)

MC was great, which is not always given in these novels. Clever, normal and rational. :)

And the relationship between MC and ML was precious (omitting the start ofc), developed well and sweet. One of the loveliest relationships I came across in cnovel which is kind of funny taking in account that ML is really dark, murderous villain. (but those moments with MC in later chaps, oh my heart, oh my my, I was smiling so big reading about those two muffins, and I was laughting so hard in some of these. They were so precious.)

One of my favs that will be reread again. Not perfect and maybe it just suited my mood perfectly because I didn't read cnovel in a really long time... but I really liked it very much so 4* is it. :)

This author can go in some really original directions from the cliché sounding titles, based on the two books I’ve read by them, this one and Wake Up Male Lead, You Belong With The Female Lead! I like this one better, since it’s happier overall. But still, I don’t think I’ll read their stuff again. It gets too twisty and uncomfortable sometimes for me.

For the first half of this book I couldn’t really get into it for a long time since it’s all based on a lie. It felt like a time bomb and I was just waiting for it to explode. Not a feeling I enjoy while reading although it can be a common trope. It got more fun and sincere later on and I liked that much better. Also there’s no real random other male lead sticking their foot in to add spice to the main couple’s relationship. Iirc the author’s other work, Wake Up Male Lead, You Belong With The Female Lead!, had this and I hated it. Didn’t like that book much in the end.

Anyway, both books turned out as twisty as multiple pretzels and not a style I enjoy in my reading materials so I’ll stop with this author. That said I’m very pleased to have read this after the other one because it left me a much happier impression.

Enredo bom, personagens ótimos, protagonista inteligente e esforçada, ML não-tóxico e relacionamento saudável (embora a principio seja pseudo-tóxico (mas era na época fake do relacionamento então eu desconsidero)).
Problema: CANSATIVO. Já li novels muito maiores que essa, mas demorei tanto nessa porque a enxurrada de acontecimentos e a progressão do enredo no inicio-meio dá a impressão de que você está lendo uma saga de mais de 10 livros. Muitos acontecimentos para um pequeno espaço de tempo, e depois (meio-fim) muita escrita pouco relevante a longo prazo.
Às vezes eu ficava confusa com a progressão de ações dos personagens e descrição de locais, mas não sei quanto disso é erro de tradução. Achei o final meio meh, esperava mais. Não achei de bom tom os extras.
Enfim, vale a leitura? Acho que sim, li muita coisa pior e muito mais conhecida do que esta novel, que em essência, é bem feita.

This book is so good.

MC was so likeable and smart and not useless when it came to love, which is so rare in light novels.

ML is crazy, more so at the start, but the difference is this book doesn’t downgrade it and gives him actual substance. Also, despite being crazy, he never assaults the MC so authors listen up, if the crazy man can still be decent, then your love interests can be too.

Also they didn’t meet when she was 13 and him 25 or something like that, which is way too normalized in this genre, so that was nice too.

Only thing for me, this is a normal sized light novel, however this one genuinely felt long. There was a lot of plot. It was all good, but it was a lot to take in. Maybe if I had read it in volumes instead of an ebook it would have felt easier, idk.

This novel's genre is hard to pin down. While there is the ultimate romance bit, there's martial arts/cultivation, action, intrigue, humor and tragedy all wrapped in the bundle as well. It can cause a bit of emotional whiplash at times but it was worth the read.

The world building was excellent. As the story progresses new puzzles and mysteries come up and it did not have a lull or slow down towards the end.

I did like the FL and I was more ambivalent about ML in the beginning but he redeemed himself later in the story.

Definitely worth the read. Would be interesting to see made into a cdrama.
