Not a bad basic book on where to start with getting your life together. Lots of good exercises that one can do (if they can somehow find the time to incorporate into their already busy daily lives). I see a lot of CBT present which makes sense because the author is actually a clinical psychologists. I actually like a lot of what she is saying! Quick read :)

"Contrary to popular belief, a healthy mind is not one that feels happy all the time and doesn't feel sadness or other (what we might perceive as) negative emotions...a healthy mind is one that can help you look after yourself and treat yourself respectfully, with kindness and compassion. It allows you to understand your emotions and respond to them in a way that is helpful to you so that you can manage stressors that life throws at you and make the most of your life."

This is a perfectly compact and concise toolkit of methods to manage your mind, accompanied by Dr Emma Hepburn's fabulously bright illustrations. It's divided into six chapters, covering the basics of mental health, ups and downs, emotions, triggers and different ways to respond to emotions (what we do and what we think). Each chapter has three exercises, which encourage you to write in the book if need be, to put into practice the different areas. This also means you can refer back to them later, akin to journaling.

It can be read from over to cover (as I did) or dip in and out of (my sticky notes indicate I'll return to it to do just that. You may feel some elements are more applicable to you and that's encouraged too. It's written in an engaging and accessible way that makes you feel good about yourself and capable of making improvements if you feel you need to. I particularly like the illustrations, which distill the solutions and simplify the approaches. I think most people would benefit from reading this, will learn about their mental health and how to manage it.

I loved it!

It's brought in a clear and playful way. You get to train yourself to look [at and after] your mind through some exercises and (scientific) theories, minus the complexity of the latter.

I really loved the way it has been brought, it gives some 'lightness' to the theme, that by times can be really heavy to bear.

A fantastic source of help & inspiration. I have been trying out the ideas & taking photographs of some of the brilliant images in the book, to use on days when I need a bit of extra support. I’ve also begun using some of the ideas & exercises with my students!

A helpful and compact little book full of practical activities to improve mental health. Nothing you won’t have heard before but it’s all packaged together nicely with cute illustrations and graphics. It was a bit oversimplified for my own preference though.

This is a great book for everyone to read. For many, including me, mental health can be a hard and confusing topic to understand. When you’re struggling with mental health, it can be really difficult to explain your feelings, know what the problem is or how you can improve things.

Dr Emma Hepburn does a fantastic job of explaining, in straightforward terms and drawings, the common mental health challenges and experiences, what we can do when facing them, and how we can be proactive in preparing ourselves for them.

I liked how she explains early on how we’re all on a mental health continuum - it isn’t that we’re either mentally well or mentally ill - but it’s a spectrum that we’re constantly moving around on. It’s much easier to focus on physical health but mental health is also just as important and should have our attention.

This book is a toolkit with lots of good tools and techniques. One I liked near the end was to consider creating a mental health first aid kit similar to a physical health first aid kit. It’s another reminder of how we often focus on physical health but forget to consider our mental health. In this she recommends putting reminders and things that might help you when struggling with mental health issues - music playlists, photos of good times, positive messages, people to call and books to read etc. what a great idea!

As the title reads, this book is a useful toolkit for modern life. Definitely recommend!

My friend gifted this book to me for Christmas and I have to say I LOVE it! It’s the perfect read for combatting the January blues and indeed the covid/lockdown based blues.

Full of helpful explanations (the author is a clinical psychologist) and practical advice about our emotions, the ups and downs of life, how we respond to stress, anxiety, social media pressures, imposter syndrome and much much more, this book gives you 53 ways to look after your mind. I read it cover to cover but it’s also the ideal book to dip into every time you need a little pick me up or a way to think through some of the issues you might currently be facing. I shall certainly be making use of the author’s excellent advice in order to create positive habits and take care of my mental well-being.

There also happens to be some impossibly cute illustrations 😍 ALWAYS a bonus!

Nice and quick read presenting the individual with several simple tool to manage ones mental health. Great for someone who is getting started with this kind of work. Not great for someone who already read a bunch of similar books and who is looking for enlightenment. The work you need to do yourself, as this in the end, is a toolkit.
I love the visuals, they definitely bring up the rating for this book.

This book would be informative if I knew literally NOTHING about mental health or was an alien trying to figure out the basics of human emotion. A lot of rambling, I felt rather patronised and learnt very little. With that being said there are a few decent exercises and the colour and illustrations are nice and engaging.

We all have a mental health jam jar that gets filled with our vulnerabilities (strawberries) and stressors (raspberries).
Everybody’s vulnerabilities will be at different levels and their stressors will change throughout life.

We can increase the space in our jar by learning and using coping strategies, such as social support, good sleep and exercise.

It has been a beneficial book to pursue well-being that (I) we often forget. I loved the author sharing so many tips and exercises you can apply to your daily life.
It took a little time to read this book because I wanted to apply every bit of it in my journey. So I definitely recommend it. The graphics and drawings in this book are splendid too!

This was a really well done intro to all things mental health. Everything is explained in such a simple, yet relatable way with zero condescending remarks. It makes you feel seen. You can also keep yourself accountable by doing exercises after each section to deepen your understanding about the concepts you’ve just read about.

Accessible, uplifting and bright. Not a lofty self help book that leaves you contemplating the meaning of life; but a well written guide for thinking and emotions.
Really appreciated the PDF too
