I have a lot of thoughts about this book and i am not sure from where to start!!

First, i want to say that i did enjoy the book and being the author's debout, i will definetely keep her on my radar, i want to read more of her work. Although i didn't like some things, i devoured it!!

Now onto the plot. The plot was very intriguing and i would say unique. At least i've never read a book like that! The book is in the spectrum of horror erotica, which i don't think i've ever read, but it's a genre i might read more of. It had also some aspects of dark romace. It had the creepy vibes which i was craving and some shocking scenes and i was living for iiit!!

The writing: My 2 reducted stars are because of that. I don't want to be harsh, as it's the author's first book as i said, also writing is not my strong suite haha. But i think the book should be longer. There were many times were the change of emotions was so instant and it didn't make sense, where if it was gradual with better developement it would have made lots of sense. Also many scenes where anticlimactic. There was suspence and creepy vibes but then they were cut abdurptly to the next scene. So it left you with not feeling so much. This had so much potential, so i think with some improvements in the writing it can be so much better!!

Now i would like to tackle a thing that might anger some people in this book. The protagonist thought she was a lesbian but started falling for a man for the first time. Now, that's a sensitive topic as we all many times heard lesbophobic language and way of thinking unfortunately. Lesbian sexuality is 100% valid and no, there is not "a man that can change you". But imo, this book wasn't feeding in that way of thinking. I believe for many people sexuality is fluid, and although identify with one, later on find theirselves in a situation where their label no longer alligns with it. For others, sexuality is very definite. Both are valid. That's ofc not a reason to doubt anyone's label or trying to dictate it!! But at the same time, i feel like some people are scared if they find that their label they used to identify with does no longer fit them, because of how people see them or even how they see themselves. All i am saying is every label is valid and every change of label is valid as well!! People and sexuallities are more complex afterall!! The truth is, this part could have been handled better, so i understand if some people don't like that!!

Also, check the tws on the author's site!! There are many and it's a very dark read so be careful going in it!!

----------------------------------------------------

I think that reading this before going to sleep was a bad ideaa!! Rtc

This was the worst book I read in 2023. Let's go down the line, shall we?

The writing - aside from using words that aren't words like "luxy" and "fictious" and being full of typos, fragments and misspellings, the entire thing read like a stupid, unorganized mess. At one point, in a moment of "spice" between the FMC and her kidnapper, her nipples "peddled" and I screamed. There was also this little gem of a line "I'm holding in my breath so hard that I can't breathe." ...I refuse to believe there was an editor.

The story - as an overall story, it was formless and poorly executed in pretty much every way. Not one of the characters were well developed, no thought went into them at all. The plot was just dumb and the pacing was choppy, almost as if it were trying to throw me overboard so I could save myself. I guess when all your energy goes toward overstuffing the plot with all the sex and relying solely on the dark, taboo, shock value things to do most of the heavy lifting, there isn't much left for editing, pacing, organization, spellcheck, character development, plot continuity, etc.

And all of these things could've been overlooked and I would've simply logged this away as yet another quick, stupid dark romance novel... if homophobia hadn't entered the chat.

The homophobia - so this book is dedicated to anyone who has ever questioned their sexuality, right? And in the trigger warnings (which were also repetitive, redundant and full of typos and misspellings) listed "homophobia and homophobic side characters" right? So what's the issue? Well, the call was coming from inside the house. Queer people can perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Queer people can harbor internalized homophobia. This book reeks of it and to not only write it but then dedicate it to members of the LGBTQIA+ community felt so irresponsible at best and insidious at worst.

Anyone who rated this over 1 star needs to quit playing.
Anyone who claimed this book was well written, show me where.

Okay hands down I LOVE this book!! Now before going in this is not a dark romance book it is a erotic horror. The author said book 2 is more dark romance. So don't expect much in romance. Also please Please check triggers!!

My heart broke for Skylar she had a father who couldn't accept her sexuality and she was feeling a unrequited love from her best friend Nicole so she kept that crush silent, these two are headed to a festival and already sparks fly when Nicole does something that breaks Skys heart.. even more but she has to brush it off. With drugs in her system shes trying to have a good time.. but someone Is watching and takes her. I'll be honest I wanna smack Nicole many times as a bff.. kinda also wanted her to get killed lol

Killer knows Sky is different but he still has to teach her a lesson, and boy his lesson were dark!! Sometimes I question myself lol and when you heard Killers story.. my heart broke 🥺 I had some mix feelings on how I loved them as a couple even if he was toxic for her. But I lovr toxic men.. that only have eyes for that person and he did..

And the more stuff that came out I need more answers!!!! And that cliffhanger!!! Give me book 2 now.

Low angst, no om/ow drama, Slight secondary character, Drama, sexy times, virgin gal no manwhore (atleast from what I saw)

A stellar debut from a fresh author on the block. Ayden Perry brings dark, delicious, depravity in Wings of a Butterfly. While I sit here eagerly anticipating the sequel, I’ll leave you with two words: anal hook.

Well, now.

.... WELL NOW.

It has been a while since I was kept on the edge of my seat, craving more. I almost found myself upset at the end, not because of the ending...but because it ended .

How can this be a debut? I am beyond impressed by not only the story line, but in the fact that this author was able to serve this story like a punch in the gut ... and makes you want to come back for more.

The mind is a wonderful and scary thing. The adaptability of humans can work in our advantage as well as our disadvantage. Just ask Skylar.

The line between love and hate is thin and sometimes dissipates like mist only to reform and strangle you until you wish for death like a lover's embrace.

Like the heroine, I find myself enraptured by this damaged man. *shakes fist at author* You know my weaknesses so well!

As the truths and lies unfold, you find yourself almost as lost as the heroine .. lost in the house of secrets, desperate to dig up more at any cost.

And like a butterfly, we are all ensnared in the glass cage, where our dear anti hero proceeds to pull us apart... one wing at a time.

...as for me.. I do so enjoy the pain.

Miss Ayden Perry is an author to look out for. I am excited to see what else she has in store for us!

You have gained yourself a fan.

I rank this book 5 stars, especially for it being a debut.

Wings of a Butterfly has been on my radar for a while now and although my rating isn’t great, please don’t let this persuade you from checking this novel out, as every reader has different tastes & enjoyments!

For a debut novel, I’m not going to focus on the aspect of the writing, because writing a book is hard, it can take a while to find your footing and grasp your own sense of style. My main issue with the book was the pacing and the jumping back and fourth with one of our main characters.
I won’t give spoilers because I encourage you to check this book out for yourself, but I felt like there was too much back and fourth with Skylar’s feelings and due to the pacing, I wasn’t feeling the horny vibes. There wasn’t a lot of build up for me, and I think that really let this experience down. Maybe if the book was longer & there was more push, there might have been more of that fuck yeah attitude I was expecting.

I feel bummed out that I didn’t enjoy this because I’ve been seeing it hyped for a while, with such raving reviews, and it just didn’t hit those marks for me.

If you want an easy, quick dark romance book, I do suggest checking this out and seeing if it’s for you!

first the sexuality thing and then they’re siblings?????? there’s no way this man kidnapped her knowing they’re siblings to have sex and fall in love with her, AND THEN she thinks she kills him but he’s alive and then comes back for her but gets killed again by her best friend but low and behold he’s alive again???? nobody should read this book but honestly the ending made me curious so i’ll sadly be reading the next book against my own happiness and sanity

This book was a wild ride. The very first chapter was intense and captivating. I needed to know the story behind the Killer. He kidnaps women in hopes of them staying with him forever. When he finds Skylar and captures her, he feels like he found the one. Little does he know, she may be searching for the same things, she is resilient and a fighter.

I loved Skylar and how she is still discovering herself and her sexuality. And how she somehow finds beauty in the darkness with Alex. For such a short story I was completely engulfed in the story. Ayden Perry’s writing made me feel like I was with Skylar. I had the same anxiety and intense feelings she had.

This book does have a cliffy! I can't wait to jump into the next book and see what's in store for Skylar and Alex.

This is an Arc review.

Let me tell you this. I’ve accompanied this author for quite some time now and I can’t tell you enough, how her process of growth excites me. I am glad to see her move from her first thoughts up to her first actually printed books. I am incredibly proud of you, Ayden and remember this everyday to push yourself beyond what you think might limit you. You’re just so much more.
That being said, these 3 characters, Sky, Nicole and Alex, they pull you in like not many stories actually result in doing.
Alex, the guy with the scar, Sky, the fierce red-head and Nicole with her green dreadlocks. They all carry baggage of different size with them. Yet they all play their parts in the setting. This book ends in a cliffhanger and I can not wait to see how book 2 will go on.
If you haven’t tried dark romance and writing before, this is an amazing book.

I was lucky enough to receive an arc of this book. Thank you Ayden!
This book is your worst nightmare, it’s depraved and filthy, and just a whole load of fucked up. Which of course makes for an exciting read.

There were quite a few ‘oh fuck’ moments in this book, moments that make your stomach drop and the ending is just, well I don’t want to give anything away but it’ll have you wanting to read the second book!

This was a really quick and easy read! I do wish it was longer and for some parts to have a little more explanation but I’ll definitely be reading the next book to see what happens next!

Brutal and spicy, it's hard to imagine that WINGS OF A BUTTERFLY is just the debut from Ayden Perry. I almost refuse to believe this is the first because it's so well written and so engaging. Filthy, dark, depraved... it's a journey of survival, sex, mental illness, and so much more. I was never once not wondering what could happen next. A few scenes quite literally had me gasp out loud. AND THAT ENDING?! What a cliffhanger in the best way possible! NEED MORE!

The book

As usual, I went in blind with this one. I didn’t see that crazy plot twist coming at all! It was a wonderful treat for me.

Skyler gets abducted by her stalker she didn’t know she had. Wakes up to a nightmare that she quickly finds she doesn’t mind all that much. It’s the secrets he keeps that bothers her. Can she accept him once she uncovers all that he’s hiding?

I enjoyed this short read a lot. Fully formed story. Perfect amount of spice. Stalker. Taboo. Unaliver. Suspense thriller. It’s classified as a romance but… I’m not sure I personally agree with that. Could just be me though.

The audiobook

Holy cow! The audiobook was absolute FIRE! I am very picky with the narrators I enjoy and these two were absolutely phenomenal!!! Corvin King and Autumn Ivy. It was my first time listening to them and I instantly started looking into other books they’ve done. I can’t recommend this audiobook enough! The best one I’ve listened to in a long time.

This book had me right from the prologue! Twists and turns throughout, you never knew what was coming next!! I literally could not put this down, and that ending, Ayden, Ma'am thank goodness there is no wait for book 2 cause dang!! I was left a little confused there at the end, which makes me need book 2! Skylar and Alex are just wow. I don't know how else to explain it, haha.

I felt like this was extremely fast paced. A lot happened in a short amount of time . Which made it a extremely quick read. But warning it is extremely dark and taboo .

So many questions unanswered. Why is Alex that way ? What is up with Nicole and the trench coat ? The brother ? Everything is just a big loop of questions. It definitely keeps your mind working.

“When did this start becoming our room? I feel fury lighting a fire within me.”

“Wings of a Butterfly” by Ayden Perry gets a 4 out of 5 stars.

Perry states inspiration came from the song, “Wings of a Butterfly” by HIM. It’s the idea of something pure being tarnished but evolving into something new and this is the premise for the main character, Skylar. Part survival horror. Part erotica. Part psychological thriller. This book has plenty of moving parts that intertwine.

Skylar is lovesick over her childhood friend, Nicole, but she can’t bring herself to admit that her feelings have grown to something more. Skylar came from a broken home and feels like she’s struggling with her identity. It all changes when Nicole coerces Skylar to get out of her norm and go to a festival.

That same festival where Alex has his eyes set on taking home another prize. Alex is a serial killer battling extreme personal demons and he is in search for his perfect “little butterfly.” Alex kidnaps, tortures and kills his “butterflies” and Skylar unknowingly becomes his next prey. He’s manipulative, evil and demented and knows exactly what he’s doing. Alex has a secret that turns Skylar’s world upside down and makes her question everything.

The story is sexy, gritty and disturbing all rolled into one. The plot had many aspects that were left open for the next book. Overall, “Wings of a Butterfly” will leave you wanting to know what happens next for Skylar.

"I never thought he'd take what little piece of my sweet soul I had left. At this moment, it feels like I'm ripping the wings off a butterfly." 🦋

Well...

This was not what I expected, but in the best way. If you're a more advanced dark romance reader with a lean towards horror, then you are sure to enjoy this author's debut book (just be sure to check the trigger warnings - the author lists them on her website if you're unsure).

It never ceases to amaze me how valid I feel being able to read stories like this that let me know I'm not alone in this world. Not only that but it got me feeling hot and gave me the creeps all at once. It's a very f*cked up kind of love, but kept me on the edge of my seat as if I were in a dark movie theater just waiting for the next jump scare.

Thank you to the author for letting me read an ARC! I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for book two.

there’s a serial killer who preys on young women. he sees you at a huge music festival with your best friend and decides you’re his next pick. he kidnaps you and when he takes you back to his house lots of sex and creepy shit starts happening and you start to notice things are not as they seem. this book is a horror erotica but the author said the second book will be a dark romance.
_____________

not even going to lie… what happens book is my biggest fear🫣 it was such a quick easy read and i still can’t stop thinking about it days later. i didn’t know there was not an hea so i was shoook by the ending

𝚖𝚢 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚜-the pacing felt off, i wanted more details on certain things that happened, and skylar’s feelings flip flopped a lot so the ending left me confused + sad lol

Sorrrrry but this was really bad imo😬

The writing wasn't good, there were things said several times in different ways, like about her being a book nerd, or being curvy. It got annoying.
It was also all over the place, way to fast paced, also not believable. I love dark romance, I believe I saw this on a review and when I heard lesbian who gets kidnapped and falls in love with her male captor I was sold, but i don't think if I was a kidnapped virgin who woke up with an anal hook in me with some creepy stranger about to rape me I'd be like wow I'm in love.
Good concept, bad execution.

What in the 50 shades of fucked up did I just read!

For real though show of hands who read the TW’s and mistook what “family love” meant✋🏽🤣….in case your like me and didn’t or possibly wouldn’t make that connection they do mean family love of the “incestral” type. I would even categorize this in the romantic horror genre. So make sure to read all the TW’s.

I could not put this book down it was like watching one bad disaster after the next I wasn’t expecting the cliffhanger at the end but oml did it have me running to read book2.

This was very confusing. This story starts off very interesting, and then it just became so convoluted.

Everything was speed up and disturbing. It still doesn't make sense to the very end, and I am confused why there is a book two.

This book crossed my radar when I saw that one of the booktubers I like, Natalie of Weirdo Book Club, is going to be doing a rant review of this on her channel. Since it’s short and available on KU, I decided to read it.

And…it’s not terrible. I should clarify that the author describes this as horror erotica, which doesn’t bother me at all. I love horror, and I occasionally read erotica, and very little upsets me in a fictional book. I actually think the author was trying really hard to be shocking and disturbing and I’m such a jaded reader, I was hoping for something “worse.” If you read a lot of horror, this is mild.

I think this story actually has a lot of potential, but it feels like a second draft rather than the finished product. The characters are not fleshed out, the pacing is off, the twists are predictable and the writing is clunky. With all that said, it was mildly entertaining and I might even read the sequel some day.
