I’ve sworn off men. For good! Finding your boyfriend cheating on you will crush even the most romantic of hearts.
Never again will Shelley allow herself to believe in happily-ever-afters that don't exist. At least, not for her. The only guy she is willing to let into her heart is Ben, her adorable eleven-year-old nephew, who just moved into town with his dad.
Adrian has finally landed the job of his dreams. His new dreams, that is. He gave up on his real dreams eleven years ago. For the last decade, he has struggled to raise his son on his own after his girlfriend split, leaving him to figure out parenthood on his own.
When Shelley offers to help out with Ben, Adrian finds himself leaning on her in ways he thought he never needed. And it’s awakening something inside him that he thought was gone forever.
Will Shelley and Adrian continue to hide behind their fixed excuses, or will they conquer the obstacles that stand between them and take what could be theirs?
Mylissa Demeyere was born in Belgium, and resides in the beautiful city of Ghent. She lives in a somewhat organized home with her four beautiful children and the love of her life. If she isn't working, she's writing, running, reading, or enjoying time with her kids, who are growing up way too fast. The Songs of You and Me is her debut novel, with a sequel already in the works.
I'm really enjoying this series, and was eagerly awaiting this book! I really enjoyed this one and the unique storyline. Adrian is a pretty great single-father, raising his son Ben and sacrificing a lot to provide for him. He accepts a new job offer that brings them closer to Ben's aunt, Shelley. Although they've known each other for years, things seem different now that they're seeing each other more often. Shelley is an awesome aunt. I loved the relationship she had with Ben and how close they were. She really made an effort to be a part of his life and you can see what a positive affect that has on him. Shelley and Adrian are cute together, as they try and figure out what is going on between them. I thought the story was well-written, kept me turning the pages to see how things would turn out.
Content: Clean, just kissing, no language or violence
Yay for book number two in this series!! This is a fun one, friends. It's the kind of relationship that has the potential for some cringes as Shelley's sister has a kid with the guy she is crushing on. Awkward, right? Nothing like falling in love with your sister's ex. Fortunately it didn't come off too weird and Adrian and Shelley are both great characters. It was easy to like them and easy to root for them.
This story is told in alternating first person perspectives. I liked seeing things from both Shelley and Adrian's points of view. One other thing I really liked is that Shelly and Adrian didn't have some great big misunderstanding that tore them apart. They both faced a challenge that they had to work through but they did it with relatively little drama on their parts. I like when characters face things together. Their love for Ben was big, obvious and I loved how it drove their decision making in the best of ways.
It was fun to see characters from the previous book, giving a feeling of community and family to this book. Don't worry, you don't have to read the previous book to love this book but you might have a more vested interest in the secondary characters if you do. This book is on Kindle Unlimited if you have that.
It always seems that love comes when you're least expecting it and that's what happens with single dad Adrian and done-with-dating Shelley. I adored these characters and 10 year old Ben was the icing on the cake. I loved how each chapter alternated points-of-view.
The elements are all there for a delightfully sweet story--a wonderful cast of characters, service, homeyness, attraction, baking, and swoon, but I was slightly uncomfortable with Adrian's and Shelley's connection. I know people are connected that way in real life, but it would be a personal hurdle for me to overcome.
Adrian and Shelley have a bond that is tangible and it was lovely to watch them build upon that, making their relationship deeper and more meaningful. Ben was the glue, even amidst all the troubles and angst. Once I settled into the situation, I was stolen away for an entertaining, yet bumpy ride, and it was a nice diversion. I'm loving this Rules series!
This is one of my favorite tropes because I met my husband shortly after I had a bad breakup & had decided to take a break from relationships - several of my friends had it happen similarly for them, too.
Shelley & Adrian made such a perfect couple! They had complementary personalities, but their life experiences also made them good for each other. The story is romantic, but it's really satisfying, too, because it's such a pleasure to see them win out together after so many difficulties.
I loved this story. The characters felt real and the issues they dealt with felt so real to life. The book had such a smooth flow to it and I turned the pages without even realizing the passing of time. I loved catching up with the characters from the first book in the series as well. As with so many books, the child in the story, Ben, steals your heart from the very beginning.
I noticed a few reviews mention that they didn't like the premise, meaning the prior relationship between the hero and the heroine. I understand how they feel. I don't want to give anything away, but the thing that made it all okay for me was that TEN years had passed since the "prior" relationship. That's a very long time before the hero and heroine finally notice each other romantically. So, again, that made it okay for me and I was not at all bothered by the prior relationship. I felt the author handled the situation with finesse.
If you love a sweet and honest romance, then you will love this book! Enjoy!
Shelley has had enough of flaky, traitorous men in her life and has sworn off them forever. But when her nephew and his dad move to her same town, she suddenly craves to be part of Ben’s life. He’s practically the only family she has left around anymore, and she’s determined to do right by him. Her older sister, Zoe, left him and her boyfriend, Adrien, when Ben was still a toddler, to live her life as she saw best (selfishly). Adrien has raised him alone for the past decade. As Shelley becomes a part-time caregiver to Ben to help Adrien out, she starts feeling things for her sister’s ex that she has no business feeling. But how to resist when he starts feeling the same way about her?
This was a fun, easy read that has a slightly forbidden romance, friends-to-lovers tropes written into it. The characters were delightful and the angst and family drama was very heart-grabbing. Definitely worth a read.
I wonder if Shelley picks awful men because she's afraid of trusting her heart. Because of her last relationship she has sworn off men is was wary about starting a romantic relationship with her sister's ex and nephew Ben's father Adrian. Ben is a good loving kid and pretty well adjusted considering his mother took off when he was a baby and he hardly sees her. It was sweet how excited he is to hang out with Auntie Shelley. I would love to cook all the yummy sounding food she made. I love the idea of a trapezoid pizza to make geometry fun for kids. Her self-centered selfish sister Zoe is a piece of work with her jealousy and manipulations. She really did a number on Shelley, Adrian, and Ben. But I kind of hope she redeems herself and finds happiness in a future book. This was a sweet romance, with it's ups and downs, funny moments, and an awesome ten year old who wishes his fun loving Auntie Shelley could be his mom.
I liked this book’s characters (our heroine and her baking YouTube channel, Ben a very cute ten-year-old, Mamie the grandmother of them all) quite a lot. But there was something that didn’t work that well for me: maybe it was the too much kissing (there weren’t explicit scenes but it was a bit too much for me) or the previous relationship between the main characters that didn’t let me enjoy this as much as expected. I’m happy to wait for the next one and see if it works better for me. I received a review copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
I'm loving this series. And I just saw that the author is working on the next book in the break-off series. Woohoooooo!!!!! I might be just a touch excited about that fact (if you can't tell). *shrugs*
Shelley and Adrian were great leading characters. They were very down to earth type characters, kind, good hearted, willing to help others, and they shared a deep love for Ben who is Adrian's son. Shelley has been through enough heartaches and hard situations that she decides it's time to say no more dating right now. She'll focus on her job. Except that's going to be hard when Adrian and Ben move to town. Sparks fly! The chemistry is undeniable, even though they sure try to deny it.
Honestly, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel with this story. It sounded like it would be fun, but my unsureness had to do with a connection between characters. Name the two main characters' connection...Shelley's sister. Her sister is Adrian's ex and Ben's mom. A little different than other books I've read, but I love this author's books. So I dove in.
I ended up really enjoying it. Like I said earlier, Shelley and Adrian are just good characters. They're working hard and trying to help Ben thrive. When Adrian comes to town I loved watching their focus being Ben. Ben's character was darling. And the love and joy her brings into Shelley and Adrian's lives was palpable. I really liked how Shelley didn't push Adrian about letting her help him with Ben but was a good balance and support for his parenting of Ben. I loved how Adrian recognized Shelley's help and the stress he was able to let go of by having someone else in his corner. Add to their friendship and common goal the budding chemistry (that they try to fight) and you have a sweet love story.
There are some other characters who are great supporting friends for Shelley and some characters you'll recognize if you've read the first book. Don't stress if you haven't, you can read and enjoy this one as a stand alone. Lots of fun food moments (yum, don't read while hungry). And of course a sweet love story. There's a bit of a problem that arises in Shelley and Adrian's life but I loved watching them work together to solve it and not let it drive them apart. I laughed several times and sighed as well.
Content: Clean. Some kissing. Some mild violence but nothing graphic.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I enjoyed this book so much! It was exactly what I needed after a rough couple of months. It had such a sweet storyline and wonderful characters. I read it in less than 48 hours and was quickly sucked into the characters' lives in the first few chapters. The storyline flowed very well and the characters all had a lot of depth, even the side characters. I thought there was a good balance of faults and redeeming qualities, even the Shelley's sister. I felt invested in every character's life.
So cute, funny, and sweet! Shelley just cracks me up! Slightly unconventional combo, but no icky vibes from it at all. Give it a chance, and get lost in the charm.
We were doing the right thing, but didn’t make it easy.
“Weird people are the best kind of people.”
“And what about Ben?” Shelley fought a grin. “I think I’m going to have to fight Ben for time with you.”
“If you keep this up, we’re watching a rom-com tomorrow.” Ben groaned. “With extra kissing.” I laughed. “No. Here.” He offered me the pretzels. “Have some of this too.” “Fine.” I grinned, biting into one. “You guys do enough kissing. We don’t need to watch it on TV.” Ben giggled. “BEn!” I protested. “You’re probably right.” Adrian smiled and took a hold of my face, proving Ben’s point. I didn’t mind. I had missed this type of affection for too long. And I’d missed these spontaneous moments which I’d probably taken for granted before. Not anymore. I was more than happy to get lost in Adrian’s kisses. “See?” Ben groaned while Adrian and I laughed, interrupting our kiss.
I really enjoyed this book and the unique storyline. Shelley has a crush on her sister’s ex who had a kid with. There’s Shelley, Shelley’s sister Zoe and Adrian. Zoe and Adrian had Ben who is now 10-years-old. Zoe and Adrian hadn’t been together for almost 9 years. When Adrian and Ben move to California, Shelley is there to help out. Soon enough, Shelley and Adrian start to fall for each. I love the little family that Adrian, Shelley and Ben had created. I adore Ben. I love stories that have nieces and nephews in them. I have two nieces and one nephew, so when a character is talking about the love that they have for their nieces and nephews, I know exactly how they are feeling. Adrian and Shelley are a perfect couple. They complement each other, they are there for each other, and are good together. The story was romantic and satisfying. 4.5 stars.
I honestly don’t know what to write in my review! I enjoyed the book. It was well written and the characters were fun. Charlotte (who REALLY annoyed me in the 1st book) was a damper for me. Shelley and Adrian were cute. I liked that we got to know Adrian by his son , Ben and his art. Shelley for some reason I felt like I was missing pieces to the puzzle. It talked about how she wanted someone to like her for her and not who they thought she was bc of her online cooking videos. It almost felt like these online videos were something we should have known about. It didn’t really elaborate about them. Until you were much farther into the books I don’t know. I liked Shelley as well and how she interacted with Adrian and Ben, I just don’t feel like I knew her as well. The romance was good, no whishy-washy, I don’t deserve love which is always a plus for me. Once Adrian decided he wanted to peruse Shelley that was it. He went all in.
“The woman that invades my every thought, that keeps me up at night, that has me thinking I might have a future that isn’t just about Ben and me. That woman is you. Somehow, you have wormed your way inside here.” I took her hand and raised it to my chest, resting her flat palm on my racing heart. I rested my hand on hers, holding it in place on my chest. “For so long this has been locked. Closed off. Not open to anyone. And somehow, you found a way inside.”
I loved the relationships in this book and how they progressed. Each main character had their own struggles and yet were able to overcome them as they grew together. Shelley longs for love and family but she’s almost given up hope, deciding she’s done with men, except for her ten year old nephew Ben. Adrian has been a single dad for almost ten years. He doesn’t regret a minute of it, but is there a chance for more? Ben longs for a mother’s love, but he has his Aunt Shelley, that’s almost the same, right? Can the three of them put aside their loneliness and make a family? This book had a family dynamic that made it a story I was invested in. The end was surprising and added a real life feel to the book. I loved it.
3.75🌟. Its a sweet, mature love story with strong, loving mcs. Shelly, is such a strong female lead and boy what an aunt!
This is the second book in a week when a very Indian dish has been mentioned. Impressive, she was going to make chapatis with curry. I liked how the author used the right word and not Indian flat bread as its generally addressed.
This is also the second book where the mother has left the baby and walked out either for a more carefree life or to better her career. And in both cases, the father has stepped up and how!
The only inconsistency was in the mother 's character. It doesn't match with Sbelly's and Adrian's reminisces of her.
Just as Shelley decides she’s done with men, her nephew Ben and his father Adrian pop up in her life. She adores Ben and wants to spend time with him, but Adrian also charms his way into her life. Complicating the situation is the fact that Adrian is Shelley’s sister’s ex-boyfriend. Adrian and Shelley are endearing and likeable, and, of course, Ben is an adorable 10-year-old who steals everyone’s heart. I was a little surprised at the amount and depth of kissing for a story that is classified as “clean and wholesome” romance. This is a cute story I would probably class as YA romantic fiction. It’s fairly predictable, but it’s a fun, easy read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own
This was a wonderful story of Aunt Shelley helping out her nephew and Adrian after they moved from Arizona to California for his new job. Her sister, Zoe is the mother of Ben and she left them to be her own free spirit.
I liked the chemistry between Shelley and Adrian and how sparks were flying whether they wanted to admit it or not. That truly sparked a cute, fun story that I enjoyed reading. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
Really fun! I enjoyed the first book of the series but I really loved this one. Sometimes sequels can have a bit if a let down but this one surpassed the first. Being raised in a single parent household myself I must say I was rooting for the free spirit mother to never make an appearance and mess up the happy family bubble that Ben enjoyed. But without giving anything away, I’m happy how the story developed and had the most perfect epilogue. I loved understanding Adrian thru his drawings. Just great relationship development! I loved Ben helping in the kitchen and well, just so many great moments in this book. I really am looking forward to reading more in this series! Rating: PG, clean
This was a fun read, it was interesting to see Adrian and Shelley work together to overcome challenges. The epilogue was perfect! This was a sweet and clean read, I'd rate PG for kissing.
