I’ve followed the patterns of the universe. Now they follow me. I don’t hit the ground when I jump. Unless I want to. And light carries me, as if I were another photon, and it lifts me to new heights from which I drop to somewhere new. It’s not witchcraft or science or a miracle. It’s just me.
Vanessa and her brother Wesley have harnessed extraordinary magical abilities. Wesley's experiments to determine the forces that control destiny have led him on a journey of discovery, only to be captured and held prisoner by someone coveting his powers. Guided by nothing but a series of coincidences, Vanessa and her friend Saphron travel by starlight to rescue Wesley. But what do the coincidences really mean? And what other powers must Vanessa unleash before she can find her brother?
Julia Tilson was first published in "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul 25th Anniversary" edition. Her story "A Best Friend Crush" was chosen to open the book. She is also the author of the fantasy story "Coincident," and she is currently working on writing a high fantasy novel. https://juliatilson.wixsite.com/julia...
These are the words I would use to describe Julia Tilson's book Coincident.
From the beginning this book provokes curiosity, wonder, and abstract thinking. Following Vanessa's journey, readers are exposed to the notion that the limits of the human mind are not what we think. That when we put aside our own limiting beliefs, we can fly.
"When your mind opens to the signs and coincidences, then the setting is just that. Saphron and I could have gone anywhere, but he believed in the sign, and that was all that ever mattered"
Readers are left with a new perspective on life and an awareness of how we all encounter signs and coincidences in our everyday life. It is when we chose to pay attention to those things do we find our true power.
I loved writing this book so much! I can't believe I have just published it and released it to the world... my head is still spinning a little bit. 🤪 This is a story that came to me while I was admiring the stars one night at our local drive-in movie theatre. At the time, I didn't know when I would get around to writing it, but I soon found the words coming to me with tremendous force. What began as four words on a piece of paper (Staring at stars story?? to be exact) transformed into a fantastical tale of friendship, family, self-confidence and magic. Happy reading, everybody!
A flavorful read with an engaging protagonist! I loved how the characters were pre-established; it felt like I knew the characters as friends from the start of the book, and that I was truly a part of their adventures! Venessa's uniqueness draws you into the story more; you never know where her reflections, refractions, and coincidences will take you, but you can trust Venessa's lead in finding her brother! A definite must-read, and a definite must-read again!
This was a wonderful read! Was great to delve into a fictional story that helps us all discuss synchronicities and articulate their meanings, a worthy task. The book felt, at times, like a philosophical treatise on the big questions of WHY. But also, some fantastic imagery along the way such as Vanessa using starlight to travel. Her philosophical musings about the nature of Light kept me relating more and more deeply to this character. Some memorable turns of phrase amidst the musings. A real page-turner for me. The ongoing mystery of her brother’s whereabouts keeps action moving forward to resolution. Congratulations and thank you, Julia! Cheers, Dan 📖🎆
"Vanessa, look, I’m glad to finally be understanding some things,” says Saphron, “but no offense, I’m having a hard time drawing a line between ultimate wisdom and total insanity.”
I wasn't sure how to categorize this novel but ended up placing it in my Science Fiction folder. It is not a science fiction journey with aliens and advanced technology, but is very much a journey of the mind, the science of light, and of possibilities. It will definitely have you thinking. There is no steamy romance or high adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but there are hints at romance and the author kept me guessing as to just where this novel was transporting me.
Vanessa has found the ability to use light to travel to earthly destinations and then to another dimension. How does she do this? She claims it is neither science nor magic. She has found the ability by overcoming the restrictions of her mind telling her what she wants to do is impossible. How do these restrictions develop in one's mind? What does Vanessa perceive that I do not, or perhaps, cannot? What could I achieve if I refused to accept what my mind tells me, or others tell me, is impossible. How many people have advanced the wisdom of the world while others warned them of the impossible or accused them of insanity?
Reading the book had me thinking about an old quote (and its variations): The difficult is done daily; the impossible is done but takes a little longer.
