Beautiful Aviva Stern never dreamed she would leave her strong Hasidic community, nor does she ever imagine meeting and falling in love with a stranger from a completely different background. Nevertheless, a frightening incident in her life makes her feel she has no choice but to escape, although she has no real place to go. But her chance meeting of handsome, kind David Delgado, a Colombian musician, enables her to make the difficult transition and to have confidence that she can be loved and succeed in a very different world from the one in which she grew up.
This book just did not do it for me. I felt like the writing was very stilted, the relationship between the two characters didn't feel believable, and I feel like there were a lot of issues regarding power dynamics that were either never addressed or the characters who brought up those issues were dismissed as being highly critical. The ending was also just way too convenient.
When reading about this book I thought it would be a very good read. However I just feel it doesn’t hit the mark. I feel like everything between the characters is extremely forced. They just don’t seem like they’d mesh well I’m not sure I guess. The whole book just felt kind of off. However I do think the story was beautiful in theory.
