Every story needs a killer midpoint. We're told as writers that the midpoint of a story is either a false victory or a false defeat, though the terms and conditions may change depending on story, world, and characters. Song of the Lost absolutely hit it out of the park with delivering the midpoint of the series' arc.

When grief drives Lekore to the stars, he finds that enemies still abound--or perhaps, his enemies were never far away to begin with. With only a few questions answered, others delved into, and even more brought up, this continuation of Lekore's story promises more uncertainty for the characters we've come to know and love.

Fair warning, friends. Record of the Sentinel Seer is a series that doesn't shy away from the very real and present darkness that infiltrates even the most righteous among us. This book--as the midpoint of the five-book series--does take a very dark turn, which had me as a reader setting down the book (figuratively... aren't e-readers great!?) to take a fortifying breath. Reader be advised; topics are heavy, violence against innocents is alluded to and appears on page, and some scenes are extremely hard to deal with.

However, there is hope. With these books, there is always hope. Characters once more prove themselves as trustworthy and heroic, and unexpected development (redemption?) comes from an unexpected character as well. Lastly, we're promised that darkness in this series always appears as a counterpoint to light--and light there will be.

A midpoint this is. Whether defeat or victory, it will have to be seen.

There are few authors who can craft a tale like M.H. Woodscourt. She pulls you in from the very first sentence and doesn’t let you go until the very end. She is a true storyteller.

Her characters are real, flawed. Her settings are spectacular and truly her own. Her plots are well-thought out and amazing.

Song of the Lost was no exception. It starts out right where Rule of the Night left off. I had no idea where it would lead, but the ride was thrilling. An emotional roller coaster that left me reeling.

I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book, how these amazing characters evolve, and what tortures she has awaiting them.

I recommend this series to everyone who...

No, just everyone.

Lekore in his grief runs to space in order to find his place. But he has enemies after him no matter where he goes, and as his unravels the history of the Ahvenians and Kilsuld, he'll learn that not everything is as it seems.

The series just keeps getting better with each book. While there were some points where the story was a little dense, the plot has continued to be fascinating. This is the midpoint of the series, and this book does take a darker turn, with triggers that everyone needs to be mindful of.

Seat-Gripping, Action-Packed Tale

An adventure off Erokel and into a universe fraught with unexpected dangers. This new journey, and attempt to escape emotional pain, becomes more than Lekore bargains for when he comes face to face with not just one but multiple threats that wish to claim him as their own. There is no way out of the tasks that await, and the outcome will leave Lekore and his companions changed forever.

As the third installment to the Sentinel Seer Series, this is a seat-gripping, action-packed tale readers will not want to miss. Oh, and as always, impossible to put down.

The story was a bit dense and I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters but the plot line was stunning and I loved seeing the characters in a new place!

This third book in the five book series was an intriguing and strange pivotal point in the adventure so far.

There is a lot that happens, and it keeps you wholly invested, from beginning to end, but it doesn't quite go where you think it will. There are a lot characters, and its action and world(s) building never cease, yet, despite everything that goes on, it is still an easy story to follow, as far as writing style goes.

M.H. Woodscourt is masterful at keep your attention, without losing the reader, or the depth of the story and characters.

The first two books in the series had me cry, multiple times, and, while this one didn't drag me that far, as far as emotions go, that isn't to say that I didn't feel SO much for the hardships the characters went through. Especially Lekore (the MC).

My heart broke for the obstacles most of the characters faced, and I cheered for their perseverance. Even though there were a lot of characters, and a lot of backstories, when I was reading, I never found myself bored or wishing that I was reading a different perspective. They all kept my interest.

While I do have certain favorite characters, especially from the first two books, even with some changes to this one, I easily found characters that I cheered for, more than others. The noble and stoic Captain Nerenoth had my heart. His loyalty and intelligence were so masterful.

I also found myself loving certain antagonists of the story, for their humor and behaviors, despite their own evil intentions.

The royal family (and many of their associates), even with their personal traumas, also had me wanting them to succeed in their endeavors.

I highly recommend this series, to anyone looking for a sci-fantasy adventure, which is spaceships and world traveling, with magic, gods, cults, elements, ancient evils, royal intrigue, secrets, prophecies, magic swords, minor romance, and so much more!
It will grab you and never let go!

As a side note:
I'd also like to point out, that of all the books I've read, I, very rarely, have ever gone looking for character and story appropriate songs to match the story I'm reading (with my own written story being the exception). Well, since starting M.H. Woodscourt's stories, I have created her an entire playlist of music and songs that come into my head when I read her books. There are currently 135 songs on it. And I'm sure, more to come.
That tells you how invested I get, when I read her stuff. You should invest too! 🥰😘

I love the worlds Ms Woodscourt crafts, so diverse and interesting yet so vivid and alive. From his home world to a new world beyond the stars, Lekore's exuberance is catchy, especially as he's able to communicate with the Elemental spirits once more. Talking about Elemental spirits, they are unlike any I've encountered before, they feel tangible, like real little beings. Lekore is the purest of the pure, any acts of violence cause him immeasurable pain and he suffers deeply. Even the two people who annihilated his entire race are not exempt from his feelings of redemption.
Tahomin is not the evil dude he thinks he should be, he actually has a conscience and feels remorse for the deeds he's done and it takes a spunky princess to solidify his feelings and thoughts. He is so different to his race, a race that enjoys conquering others and taking their souls, although, Vay-Dinn relishes every single act of torture and death. Loved the differences in their characters. Poor Lekore, he strives to just be, even in the face of great evil but fate has a different agenda. With all the odds against him, the loyalty of his friends, the belief they have in him, comes through. They pull out all the stops to help him. He is a character unlike any other, pure, caring, honest, just amazing! It is a wonderful experience reading all the different worlds and people, some really scary, whilst others offer beauty. There are few fathers, anywhere, whether fictional or real, who portray such genuine affection for their children as Majentay, it was refreshing, especially as he is the Emperor of his world, a gorgeous character. I loved the pace and the brilliant storytelling. A terrific 3rd book in the series, setting up an exciting continuation to the series.

An easy 5 stars. The Record of the Sentinel Seer series is one that gets better book by book. Book 3, Song of the Lost, is no exception.

As you dive into Song of the Lost, prepare for emotional impact alongside the magic and star-travel known to this series. It's a book that dares to ask if we can run away from our pasts and the grief they hold. It begs the question of long-festering hatred and how we'll address it in our own lives. And it does these things without sacrificing the sci-fantasy elements that keep the action and the wonder of these worlds and characters alive.

There is a lot of darkness in Song of the Lost, but hope won't be snuffed out so easily.

I had the pleasure of beta reading this book and am so thrilled to have now read it in its published form. If you haven't tackled this series yet, I highly recommend it.

This series just gets better and better! I love epic fantasy and I had concerns that I wouldn't enjoy this book as much as the others because more sci-fi was part of this tale. But I had nothing to worry about. If these characters went to a undersea kingdom I'm convinced that I will be just as enthralled as I've been in the prior books. The story has levels of the bad guys and good guys. And again the world building is phenomenal. If the characters are in a desolate place I felt it. I felt fear and worry, anger, just a lot of feelings. I really would love to see these tales on a screen to see if the characters and locations will look like they do in my head. I highly recommend this book. And I'm confident that the next book will be as good if not better.

Song of the Lost is the 3rd installment of the Record of the Sentinel Seer series. This book picks up fairly soon after the tumultuous and series changing events of book 2, Rule of the Night. Lekore finds himself trying to cope with his newly found understanding of the universe and the fact that he has an important role to play in shaping its events. A powerful threat has emerged, but this threat leads to getting crucial answers that everyone needs.

The world building continues to be so immersive and just gets more vast with each new book in the series and SOTL is no exception. From the very first pages, it is obvious the stakes have gotten so much higher and it’s a nonstop ride of friendship, family, action, betrayal, revenge, love, and heartbreak. Woodscourt is really showing her master-craft at weaving such a exhilarating and unique tale while having absolutely incredible multi-dimensional characters.

This character development, in my opinion, is where Woodscourt truly shines. I love the internal battle of good and evil that was explored more in some characters in SOTL and how the fantastic relationships between each of the characters was fleshed out more to where the bonds that these characters share continue to be so believable in their mindset and motives.

I love how all of the characters are also not stagnant with their own unique struggles and are in different places at the end of the book than they were at the beginning. This holds so true with the series as a whole thus far. Woodscourt should get all the credit in the world for this accomplishment because this is hard to pull off and this is done so darn well.

I have read very few characters in books that I root for as much as I have for Lekore. You can’t help but love him and his never-wavering heart of goodness and innocence. It also really is heartbreaking for me as this series goes on to see his innocence be continuously taken away and to see how he has to cope with that.

This story and series continues to be so fun, unique, and fresh, and is such an valuable addition to the sci-fantasy genre. I cannot wait to see how the story for Lekore, Skye, Nerenoth, the Sun Gods, and Kiisuld continues. With this being the third book in the series, I was expecting more of a transition book that it’s main function was to set up the next act of the series without much plot or character development added, but I was so wrong and can’t recommend this book and series enough!

The series is great, but this book - THIS book! - is my favorite so far. It takes an already deep and impressive plot and makes it even more intense by introducing not one but two new major villain characters. One of those villain characters is completely unique in my reading experience (an impressive feat all on its own), as well as being absolutely haunting!

I would love to gush more, but I won't. Spoilers.

This series is for anyone who like science fiction/fantasy and epic reads that involve world-changing, history-changing plots. Sword and sorcery high fantasy meets space travel and interplanetary intrigue.

Lekore's journey now takes him into a new world, introducing an entirely new set of characters and a fresh set of dynamic, engaging worldbuilding for readers to enjoy. It's quite an ambitious maneuver for an author to literally transport readers to a previously unseen planet at the beginning of a third book, but Woodscourt manages brilliantly. The Ahvenians are unique, dynamic characters, that both introduce new ideas and underline the strong themes of the first two books. They also bring in new characters to love, as well as a compelling political dimension.

Book three in the Record of the Sentinel Seer series takes us through the universe and I must say with each book I become more and more captivated with the series.

Like any great fantasy novel, the story becomes more complex the deeper you get into it, and Song of the Lost does just that. Picking up right where Rule of the Night (book 2) ends, we join Lekore as he travels with Prince Toranskay to his home in the stars. While Lekore attempts to adjust to this new role in life, discord immediately finds its way between the Ahvenias and Kiisulds, putting Lekore right in the middle. With threats looming, the genuinely pure hearted and spirited Lekore is taken into a malicious grip and it is up to his friends and enemies to save everyone.

I will continue to rave about M.H. Woodscourt's world building, characters, and her amazingly expressive writing style. The worlds she builds with her descriptive style draws you into the story. Her characters are deeply distinctive and continue to evolve throughout the pages. The seamless way she weaves together futuristic elements into this deep classic fantasy world is flawless.

[ARC Review]
*I received a free digital copy. This does not affect my review, which I leave voluntarily

Song of the Lost is book three in the Record of the Sentinel Seer series. This is N/A whimsical sci-fantasy with a soft magic system, a vast universe of different races, and especially in this specific book, very adult themes.

This one started out massively strong. After book 2 I really couldn't wait to dive back into it. Though it had a bit of a slump from 40 percent on, and towards the end it took a turn that didn't necessarily work for me plotwise, I really enjoyed my read and am anxiously awaiting book 4.

Sexual content: non-detailed mention of rape
Coarse language: none
Violence and gore: moderate-extreme, torture

Conclusion
If you like adult-ish sci-fantasy with trauma, redemption arcs, themes surrounding morality and characters who would literally die to save their friends, mixed with some awesome space-travel and an evil planet, this series should be your next go-to.
