Welcome to Preto Village, a beautiful black community where everybody knows your business and has no qualms sharing it…
We ain't gettin no younger, so we might as well... Time waits for no man. That's what they say. It sure isn't waiting for Maali and Zach to get themselves together. Everybody in Preto has been trying to push them together since forever. They've done everything in their power to keep that from happening, until now. He has a need, and so does she. Can they strike a mutually beneficial deal without getting their hearts involved?
I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.
This trip back to Preto Village is just what the doctor ordered. The townsfolk were just as petty and messy as ever and I was here for all of it. I loved, loved, loved Maali and Zach. What started out as a business transaction turned into an unexpected HEA. Companionship was the ultimate goal but, love found its way in and brought these two together in the most unconventional way. I loved how unproblematic their relationship was. Even with the heaviness of the issues Maali and Zach were dealing with, they didn’t let it deter their love journey. Well, Maali tried to but Zach shut that down real quick. As always, AshleyNicole came through with the gut busting humor. That Mr. Ollie cut the fool. He was roasting everybody. "You know Mae was a skeezer back in the day. Was out there selling p*ssy faster than a cat breeder.” LMAO!!! 🤣🤣🤣 That’s just a taste of how savage he was. If Mr. Ollie was around, anybody could get it. Ms. Stephanie flying in to remind Margaret her hands were rate E for everyone was the highlight of the book for me. When she said she didn’t play about her child, she meant that. I wasn’t a fan of the ending but, I completely get why the author left things up in the air. Hopefully, we’ll see a resolution to Maali and Zach’s issue in the next book. With Rusty finally moving to Preto Village full time and Pastah Dion still living the single life, I see at least two more books in this series. Let's Get Married was definitely worth the wait. I enjoyed catching up with the messy townsfolk of Preto Village and I’m impatiently waiting on the next installment.
Maali and Zach are acquaintances at best! Growing up in Preto everyone tried their best to force these two into marriage but if bucking against the system was a person, these two would be the perfect example. She was a Hollywood success that relocated back to Preto and loved her moments of solitude while he was the son of the town’s pastor and a slight undercover heaux. After slangin dxck to the wrong woman his peen ended up all over Preto’s Facebook page. How does he solve this problem? By proposing to Maali 🤣😩! I’m a huge fan of a marriage of convenience story because they seem to fall harder in love! I loved Maali and Zach just as much as Keegan and Charadee!
There is absolutely NO WAY I could ever do small town living! I have my own auntie blocked as I type this because she dont know how to mind her business and we don’t even live in the same state so if I had to deal with these “mothers” and I use that term loosely because who did they nurture, I’d be pulling out my hair. Ain’t that many lavender fields and waterfalls in the world that would make being subjected to the foolishness ok! And these folks are too old!!!
Whew I need a drink!! They had poor Zach about to lose his mind running his wife off! I hope we get more of their story in the next book because that ending left a lot to be desired. I mean I get it but nah Ashley we need more! Im ready to be blessed by the man of God that is Dion! I know he got some undercover freak in him 🤣🤣 on to the next book!
Back again in Preto Village with another small-town romance.
Maali a Preto village native was one of the ones who got away. Maali returned on her own terns after a successful ten- year stint in Hollywood. Now back home and enjoying her solitude and her label as being an outcast in her own hometown Maali feels like something is missing. She wants marriage and kids but doesn't have a prospect in sight. Zach the middle son and a Preacher's kid lives in Atlanta during the week for his job but commutes to Preto on the weekends. He also sees himself returning to Preto eventually but not until he's ready to settle down. After an unforeseen scandal he thinks it may be time. Zach and Maali's parents along with Preto village have been trying to put the two together since they were kids. Even though the two don't dislike each other they do everything they can to prevent want everyone wants. That is until the decide to on a mutually beneficial deal that doesn't involve falling in love.... until they do.
Again Mr. Ollie with his sage advice and sense of humor carries the book for me. I found myself wanting to highlight everything and eventually stopped because at the rate I was going, it would have ended up being the whole book.
I love how the two of them arranged their own marriage…the two basically brokered a deal, but ultimately fell in love. We can’t forget the town’s patriarch ..Mr. Ollie, he is definitely the star of this series….there were a few inconsistencies with regard to dates and ages…but this is a really good series so far…on to the 3rd book.
This is going to sound strange, but my biggest takeaway from this story is Mr. Ollie….ok, maybe not, but this man is a gem. He needs to be protected at all costs. Like I would legit be okay with a story about him. Or just a book titled "Shît Mr. Ollie Says". Cause that man is WILD. "Opportunity The Rapper" took me OUT 🤣🤣 Ok, now to the real stuff. There are a lot of sub-genre I don't care for and try to stay away from. Among them are romantic suspense, marriage of convenience, one night stands, FWB, surprise pregnancies, etc.. That is why I'm just now getting into this story. But leave it to AshleyNicole to push me out of my comfort zone in these areas. Because after this marriage of convenience story, I can honestly say I like it here. This was absolutely beautiful and so wholesome. Ashley never fails to create characters that you wanna swoon over and root for. Maali and Zach's love was sooo unproblematic. It literally made my heart flutter 🥰 and the issues they were dealing with made the story even more real and more heartwarming and so touching. But, real talk, what in the world is wrong with people in this town? These women are ruthless. They're minding everyone's business but the one that pays them. They're seriously pointing fingers to show the specs in their neighbor's eyes while having a log in theirs, oblivious to the three pointing back at them. Trifling. These kids were loyal AF to Preto cause the way I would move out and never come back 😤😤 I felt so bad for Maali, because of her mom. My mom is my everything, so imagining my mom treating me the way Maali's mom treated her broke my heart. Especially on a sore matter like that. But this story was perfect and I am thoroughly satisfied. I hope to get more stories out of Preto. Even though I'm late to the party, I'll still say this: Highly recommend. I feel an AshleyNicole binge coming on.
Who knew that going back to Preto GossipVillage would be just what the doctor ordered. Old man Ollie is probably my most favorite character. He tells it like it is..Who knew that Maali and Zach would defy their parents and be happy doing it... I loved, loved loved Zach. He was the best possible guy for this story to be this good. Any other character would've fumbled the ball. Zach's mom needed Bk Jesus to visit her and pray for her spirit. Stephanie tried to help her see the error in her ways. But for real, Zach stole my heart.
Yasssss!!! I’m loving AshleyNicole’s work. This was super sweet. The people of Preto are a flaming mess! Being that I’m reading this series out of order, I was aware of the events that occurred. However, it didn’t affect the overall enjoyment of the book.
This was just sweet and now I’m moving on to book 1😂🤷🏾♀️. I need to know the background of Keegan and Charadee.
While I am thoroughly invested in Maali and Zach I’m all for marriage of convenience but them Pretoans and those parents wrecked my last good nerve… Mr Ollie is my favorite person on earth he needs his own book before he dies on us. That ending through me for a loop I need an additional epilogue or something… overall it was an amazing read and I love for Zach and Maali to get there HEA… definitely can’t wait to dive in the next book
Zach stole my heart. But I’m getting tired of these town people it’s like every book my hate for them grows. I really want to see Maali and Zach happy in my mind I created their little family. The ending was different but I liked it.
Thank GOD for Mr Ollie and the crazy stuff that comes out of his mouth, because Maali is heart-broken and we need some humor right about now!
Neither Maali's mother or mother-in-law are supportive through her miscarriages. Instead, along with the other nosy and narrow-minded busy bodies, they blame her, to her face, as if it is Maali's fault.
Just like his brother, "Pastah Dion", Zack has no problem going to war for his wife.
I. FREAKING. LOVED. THIS. I could scream from utter joy for how much I loved this! AshleyNicole books excite me so deeply and fulfill me so thoroughly that everyone needs this feeling. Sheesh ..I didn't want that to end ❤️❤️❤️
I loved Maali from the previous book in this series. Her take no bs from others attitude was one I wish a lot more people had. She stayed to herself and gave no qualms about others opinion of her and what she did. I really like that she had Charadees' back from the moment she moved into town. Then, Rusty, Charadees' friend, just added to the crew and made it the complete trio. As out of sorts as it seemed, I really liked how natural and easy things flowed with Zacharias and Maali. They spent their whole lives trying NOT to be in a relationship because the whole town pushed it on them, that once they did it for them, it was kind of a no brainer. It hurt me to know that Maali had all those miscarriages. Even though I'm glad she had her cousin Keegan, his fiancee Charadee and their friend Rusty, it was the love from her husband Zach that truly had me swooning. Even with them knowing each other their whole lives and never being romantically involved, he cared deeply for her and wanted to see her fully healed and protect her from all things, family included.
Zacharias Henry was the middle child of 3 sons of a Pastor. He was a bit rebellious, yet understood that disrespect to his parents, especially his mother, would not fly; it's not how he was raised. Now, that didn't mean he'd let anyone disrespect him or his wife Maali, no matter how unconventional they ended up together. He'd protect her and honor her until the ends of the earth. I loved how fiercely he held her down during her time of need with the miscarriages. He didn't understand the situation from her side of things, yet he would do as he could and should to help her, no matter what. Boy, at the end, I almost blew a gasket with him when she pulled that stunt. I'm glad he popped up on her and fixed that right away. I can definitely see these two growing old together and loving each other so much, it would take death to part them; even then, they'd figure out a way to love each other. They just were meant to be and even though they were both stubborn in their youth, he refused to allow them to be in their marriage.
Man, if it's one thing AshleyNicole can do, it's ensure you're going to laugh your butt off. Man, that Mr. Ollie is a complete nut and I Love his humor. This book had me HOLLERING 🤭. Mr. Ollie has no sense and I love it. Heck, Rusty is almost as bad too🤣.
I am really enjoying learning about Preto Village. Can't wait to see what new scandal, gossip and what-nots that take place in the stories to come.
Such a Great Read. Highly recommend this book/series.
For the most part I've gotten over the kids and marriage being needed for HEA... However, I do expect certain things ... Ashley Nicole has once again push my brain beyond its normal way of thinking with her unique brand of writing.
Despite the trials and the possibilities of what could come next, I loved this story. The story was funny and I loved Maali and Zach's pragmatic approach to marriage. As I read the story the angst over their situation wouldn't let up... But the peace I felt at the end of the book is what made it a 5⭐ read for me. It's not the typical love story but it was just as fulfilling.
Noooooo...I needed more of Maali and Zach! I needed an 1 year later moment. I needed her womb to be blessed. I needed Zach to make an announcement about people approaching his wife. I needed another Mr. Ollie story. I needed more Charadee, Rusty and Keegan. I needed Charadee's mama to out that work on Keegan's mom! This was so good I needed more
Maali and Zach didn’t have the typical marriage but it became so sweet. I remember the town of Preto and the horrible nosy old timers😩 Loved that we got to see more of Charadee and Keegan!
This was so good! I was cracking up at mr.Ollie and Mrs.Stephanie! These old folks think they can say and do what they want and we’re supposed to take it. I just love how Zach loved her
4.5! I feel like I didn’t want this book to end! A marriage of convenience quickly turned into a where have you been my whole life and I loved every second of it! I loved the love between Maali and Zach and his fierce need to protect her. Through the ups and downs and after the newlywed bliss there was still love and that man wasn’t letting her go! Emotional towards the end but the HEA we needed! I also loved all the updates from Charadee and Keegan too! Loved seeing Rusty as well! Mr O is still a fool! Lol

Growing up in Preto everyone is in everyone’s business so it's no surprise that the entire town has been trying to push Maali and Zach together through the years causing Maali and Zach to intentionally avoid each other growing up. Now their biological clocks are ticking and since they aren't getting any younger they come to the conclusion that they might as well go ahead and get married and have the kids they both have always wanted.
Maali and Zach’s journey to love was so laid back and easy going that even when they experienced hardship they were able to navigate through it with a more laid back approach that worked for them. All of their drama came from their mothers and the noisy/messy residents of Preto Village. Those old ladies of Preto worked my nerve. Zack and Maali were so committed to their "business arrangement" that it made it easy for them to quickly fall in love. I enjoyed how easy it was for Maali and Zach’s relationship to develop and how they fell into their own rhythm effortlessly. Maali and Zach didn’t let any of the outside negativity get in the middle of their relationship, for the most part they didn’t even pay it any attention, and when Maali did let negativity affect her Zach was right there to reassure her they were solid. After giving us an emotional read with Gravity AshleyNicole gave us a lot of comedy in this read. There were a couple emotional parts in the book but I loved the way AshleyNicole wrote Maali and Zach’s response to it, it matched their personalities perfectly. It was nice to get an update on Charadee and Dr. Keegan, I thought their drama would have died down but lawd Keegan mama seemed to have gotten worse with her miserable self.
AshelyNicole is one of my favorite authors, I love everything she puts out. I am looking forward to more of Preto Village in future releases.
I really wanted to like this book, but the love story between Zach and Maali was too slow and lacked depth. The ending left a lot to be desired and did not leave me wanting more. I get the setting was a small town but the women in this town were just too extreme with their foolish ways and because they were so over-the-top it took away from my enjoyment of this book. I felt like there was way too much focus on them and other characters.
One thing about AshleyNicole is that she can write one hell of a supportive partner. I would have loved to see how Zach would protect Maali’s peace from his mother and hers
This book was so sweet. I loved how much Zach respected and supported Maali. We got real glance into the Pretoria village and I loved every bit of it. Obviously Mr. Ollie had me cracking up every time. The drama was the town folk stirring the pot and the Mamas who stayed trippin. I honestly liked this one more than the first one and would definitely recommend it to a friend.
This was so good. Very funny and pulled at your heart strings. Definitely pay attention to the trigger warning for miscarriage. Maali and Zach were such a cute couple. Loved how they came together and how the navigated that crazy town of Preto. Ready to dive into the next book.
I loved this town in book 1 but the time the elders became team too much time time and I was more excited to see Kee and Char because most of the time Maali got on my nerves. I hope we get this town again...oh and I loved Mr O!!
Marriage, marriage with a baby carriage was how Zacharias (Zack) and Maali went into their business relationship. All of Preto, GA was up in their personal life. But, Zack and Maali found their own walk into a loving HEA.
This book did not feel like I was reading a romance but a business deal. There wasn’t any spontaneity or passion in their coming together. It was devoid of emotion. It was in fact BORING! So far Ms. Nicole is 0 for 2 with this series.
I am a HUGE Ashley Nicole fan but this one missed the mark a bit for me. Now Ms. Ashley will write the hell out of a good black man and a supportive friend group! I read this series out of order so I love Preto and I am absolutely obsessed with Mr. Ollie! I love this town and love the individual characters the story just needed a little more for me.
LGM gives childhood friends to lovers, marriage of convenience. The two people everyone always wanted together, they were against it, turns out they’re perfect for each other. They had a perfect relationship and a really cute relationship. They meshed well and supported each other from the start. I just needed more. The book is short, about 175 pages, and the “conflict” starts in the last 50. Maali seemingly attempts to initiate a 3rd act breakup in the last 5 pages, Zach says no you’re not going anywhere, then that’s it and that’s all.. the end. Literally I wanted him to get a bullhorn in the town square and go to town on the town about his wife! The conflict is a big deal and was technically resolved so there’s no lingering questions, it just felt like it needed a bigger moment for me.
I still highly recommend this whole series.. Take Me to Church was amazing!
i love maali and zach. i loved their transition from a marriage of convenience into an actual romantic union. it was just easy. and that’s where it ended because preto made it rough for them real quick
i love how so soft and tender he was with her🥹🥺. and the way he reassured her that he’s not going anywhere regardless of what anyone else had to say and absolutely nothing was going to get between the two of them melted my little heart. especially so because it eased the doubts she expressed to him AND the ones she didn’t. maali rly deserved that because just couldn’t catch a break
one of my favourite things abt ashley’s writing are the little quirks that her characters and couples have that make them so special and so much easier to fall in love with them. it makes me giggle and kick my feet
i didn’t go into this book expecting the romance and spice to be as heavy as in the other two books (which was good because they weren’t) but i loved it all the same. my precious babies deserve the world, which makes me want a follow up novelette on them to see them get it🤭
in other news, i love that keegan’s mother got that ass whooped. she more than deserved it. never been happier to see somebody get their comeuppance
speaking of comeuppance, where is it for zach and maali’s mothers??? i hate them so bad. like SOOO bad. i know it’s harsh but it’s true. the things they did and said to their kids warranted *several* ass whoopings (that the didn’t receive omg😩). like the least you could be is compassionate and considerate like that’s your CHILD. i also hate how their mothers (and the wider town) measured maali’s worth based on her ability (or lack there of) to have kids. like they make me so sick
and if i though preto tested the other two couples, they actually shocked me with how far they went with these two. but once again their miserable asses lost as they should. but seriously an investigation needs to be done on why their so mad and bitter and hypocritical all the time because it just doesn’t make any sense. the only reprieve to cut through the mess was the always much appreciated mr. ollie and rusty. they’re literally SOOOO funny lmfaoooo and i can’t wait the latter’s book
this book broke me and put me back together in the best way. all 5 stars were *well* deserved.
tw: miscarriage

Ms. Ashley, I am so glad you decided to grace us with another Preto village novel. The townspeople are still the same just messy and don't mind the business that pays them. However, God, I love Mr. Ollie. I want a Mr. Ollie in my life. He is hilarious but his wisdom is unmatched. Ms. Mae doesn't stand a chance around him.
Zach and Maali's arrangements weren't conventional nonetheless it worked. They both fell head over hills for the other. My heart shattered 💔 for all of their losses. I think their wishes for a family are going to come true at God's timing. I also think they got married at the right time. They both needed to mature and not let the town decide their fate. They actually complement each other quite well.
This is another mind-blowing installment in this series with all of the shenanigans. The spirit of control was high in the small town of Preto. I did not care for Zach or Maali's mother's actions and opinions. You would think they would have been more loving and caring. They both made suggestions that will tear down any marriage. I was glad that Keegan and Charadee were still going strong. Keegan's mother got exactly what she deserved. I am looking forward to the next installment. Ms. Ashley, I love how you have integrated everyone throughout these stories. If by any chance you never read a masterpiece by Ms. Ashley, what are you waiting on? You can start with this series. You will not be disappointed.
I can always count on many laugh out loud moments, when I read an AshleyNicole book. This one was no exception. Them folks in Preto, are messy, nosy as hell and will spread all your business with no remorse! That damn Mr. Ollie! I swear I hollered so much during this read, that I almost choked many times! 😂 I loved Maali and Zach! Who knew what perfection these two were going to find, after all the hiding they've done their whole lives? The ease in which these two fell into their relationship, was so sweet. They complimented each other, and supported the other as their relationship and feelings began to grow. I was heartbroken for them as they endured their losses, but Zach was amazing to Maali! Now, Mrs. Henry and Janet Warton can both go to hell as far as I'm concerned! 😡 The audacity to speak those vile things to your children, grown children at that, was just beyond my comprehension! Ughh...... Should have called Miss Stephanie to throw them hands! 😂I'm so glad that Zach continued to be Maali's rock through all the heartache she endured, compliments of the people of Preto! So looking forward to more from this village, as I can't wait to see if Charadee and Keegan can survive Miss Margaret Francois' mess! Also, with Rusty moving to town, it is sure to be more laughs to come. Really enjoyed this! Great job!👍👍👍
Ashley Nicole you wiped me out with this one. Leaving wanting More of Zach and Maali and the good people of Preto Village😂❤️❤️❤️
This was such a heart warming story about two people who had unconsciously denied themselves of a Love that was meant to be forever. Simply because since childhood they felt like they would do anything except what their family and friends had been suggesting and that was them being together as a couple. The both agreed that friendship was the best they could offer to each other.
Than almost twenty years later, things take a turn when something happens very unexpected to Zach and he ends up in Back in Preto Village to regroup and these two decide to enter into a agreement of sorts and get married. I don’t want to give to much away about this wonderfully well written Love story. I can tell you that I giggled, I laughed out loud at Mr.Ollie and his over the top humor. As for Zach and Maali all I can say is that as I read the ups and downs twist and turns and interferences from their own mothers, that came about as they grew closer together, they took a part of my heart. You won’t be disappointed if you read this book. ❤️
