Janus - intelligence specialist, hacker, dominant, imprisoned by the past

I have memories I can’t recover, and secrets I can’t let out.

People die around me, an endless cycle of history repeating.

My enemies like to make them look like suicides, just to keep the mental pressure on.

Now the whole team is looking into my life, moving every rock, sifting through the dirt, delving into the jungle that is Washington DC to find how deep this conspiracy around me goes, and how long it has been there.

They are looking for the answers that could set me free. Or as free as I'll ever be, because it's the last secret that I alone hold that is the lock on the door of my prison. And rightly so. I don’t deserve to be truly free.

All I hope is that by the time this is done I will have had a chance to show Static how truly sorry I am for everything I am putting him through. He didn’t deserve this, but I always let the ones I love suffer.

Janus is the fourth book in The Teams series and forms a duology with Static which should be read first. You can expect dark and steamy romance, political intrigue stretching back generations, and the return of characters from The Handled series which shares the same universe. Please head the trigger warnings but be assured there will be a HEA after all the angst.

I was one of the few totally on board with the Static cliff-hanger because James & Janus' story seemed as rich and riddled with important secrets as Nathan & Gray's. And it definitely is!

This entire book leads up to the big talk Janus & James/Static need to have but, as usual, King punks out on writing the scene. Instead another character reveals James' secret and then Janus' is simply glossed over. [SPOILER explanation to follow...]

***SPOILER***
James' fear that Janus will leave him, via suicide, triggering his own past issues, is NEVER resolved. Instead Janus' decides he won't ever do it (tada like it's nothing) to the reader and never says or shares with James that he longer wants to die- how in the HELL did both the writer and editor miss that little hole in the story?!?! It follows the huge POV misshap in the second to last chapter when Janus asks for the big sit down with James. Did no one actually reread those edits in the last chapters?!?! I received an ARC copy but I don't see it different in the KU version. Nothing is resolved, their future, light, dark, a mix is just left unfinished. This is becoming a really lazy habit of King's. Do NOT include facets of characters in a book you don't have the will or capacity to address! It as if, in the end, they just don't have it in them to finish the friggin plot/outline; it's barely summary.

Finally, we get an ending for Janus. I’m so glad we didn’t have to wait too long after Static to get the conclusion of their story. As in the previous book the dynamic between Janus and Static continues to enthral and while tracking down the group who have been after him we get the added bonus of the involvement of the rest of the group; including the intense Gray and Nathan, who it was great to catch up with and I felt that I gained a little more insight into them as well.
Although this was a shorter book, the suspense and action as always from this author was terrific and once again I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I was gifted an ARC of this book to review and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.

A short quick read, but no less enjoyable for that. The one downer for me throughout was the editing issues. Always a let down. This finale brings highlights to the secrets that surround and shroud. Personally and historically. Fascinating look at the 5 peas in a pod, and not too far fetched in todays political arena... Janus and Static iron out their 'stuff' but not without some interesting twists and turns along the way. And some whips, floggings and hot, heavy 'petting'.

Very good writing and a story that moves along to multiple conclusions. I am adding, poor Berk! He and Snipe are favorites.
