My name is Tamsin Vale and I’m finally putting myself first. If people won’t listen to me, are so determined to force me to be what they want, then I’m done working with them. I am a person, not something the people of Faerie own or all other supes can use and abuse.
So I pulled the emergency brake and it’s time for a reset. I came into this world after my power went crazy and I unintentionally hurt people. This was only supposed to be six years I signed on for, and I was promised they’d teach me control so it never happened again.
That promise wasn’t kept.
Again… And it’s not going to be only six years. Not even close.
If people won’t change, I can’t make them. I have to do what I need to for myself and the people I love. With some help, I think maybe there’s a way for me to stop constantly playing defense and maybe even set the record straight on a few things.
That’s the best plan I came come up with since I’m at the eye of the storm. It’s also the last chance I’m willing to take before simply walking away.
Artemis University is an ongoing, hot burning reverse harem, university-age paranormal academy series with darker elements, strong language, violence, and a heroine who follows her own moral compass of what is right… And who she ends up giving her heart to.
Erin is a born Chicagoan who decided to state hop a bit, given she works from home. She currently resides in Georgia with her pup, Lord Vader Flynn. With an eclectic and addictive personality, there isn’t much that doesn’t interest her or she won’t pour herself into if it catches her fancy. She has always been interested in the darker aspects of life and mythologies—especially vampires, shifters, the occult, and anything paranormal.
To date, she has published more paranormal books than she can keep up with the characters for, in different genres with dedicated readers who await each release to her numerous series under any of the three Flynn names she writes.
3.5 stars I still like this series, now after Mel, Izzy gets less and less page time. Don't like that. Also her relationships are not stable. Two are set. Two others are ups and downs...
I don't cry. I hate it and the way it makes me feel. This book made me ugly cry and sob at the injustice and the shit Tamsin is going through. It didn't feel like a book. It felt like it was real! It felt like I was in the book with Tams the whole damn time. I want to save her so bad! Erin has done an amazing job again! I don't know if Erin will read this but damnit. I want to yell at you for your authors note! YOU AND VADER COME FIRST!!! Yes I would be devastated if you quit writing. I can't deny that, but don't ever apologize for putting you and your heath first! You have NOTHING to apologize for! You are AMAZING and FABULOUS! We don't deserve you or your amazing books. Though, you won't see me complaining if you release more. I think you're a lot like Tamsin in a lot of aspects. Don't kill yourself for us. Vader needs you. You are an amazing author and person! Take the blinders off and see it. Absolutely nothing you write is crap. It's all fabulous! I love you and your books. As much as I want the next book now, I can be patient. I may be thinking "I can't wait" but I can. For you and your happiness I can. Don't forget how amazing you are Erin! ❤
So as usual a lot happened: - the whole Arlen is resolved, though the revelations came a little bit of the blue - craftsman is being craftsman and Tams is not learning from the shit he put her through. She needs to heal from him not respond to him. - the nobles made their move but Tams put them in their place - Darby was being needy, but that made me love Hudson even more - Tams is trying to take control of her training and she made some good steps though I expected shed be able to gather more support
And then the title: she was to break free from it all, find herself and take control over her life. I didn't really feel she did. Yes if you read carefully she took some weeks to focus on her, but the pacing of the story didn't do that period of healing and less stress justice, making the reader feel as if Tams is still bulldozing ahead as in the previous books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I don't really understand the title because Tamsin didn't take any respite here🧐 She just moved to an hotel but she continued fighting against the same morons, modeling, stuffing her face, organizing a big tournament, etc.
The only "novelty" is the social media part...I'm not sure I liked it...Too cliché in my opinion and it didn't add anything to the storyline🤷🏻♀️ I don't think that livedstreaming your life makes people love you...anyway...
Craftman and Lucca are back and I don't know what will happen with them. Tamsin kept repeating she didn't want anything to do with him but she couldn't keep answering to his Tiktok videos...🧐🙄 And what about Lucca? Didn't get it. He just appeared and that's it.
As much the book was easy to read, it's not the best of the serie and nothing really changed...Maybe the next one would add new perspective to the story🤔
Honestly I just feel like I am being held captive by the fact I invested so much time into this series (I am 14 books in) so I keep picking them up when they come out, but the story has completely stalled. We are going in circles. Repeating the issues with the harem. Repeating all the same societal issues. Continuing to be extremely preachy and having no results.
Same old, same old. Honestly think i am just hate-reading at this point.
Are you freaking kidding me??? This is it? This book can be completely skipped and nothing is missed from the story. What is this? A social media promo? That’s what this book it was all about. All you need to read is the last chapter and you will be all caught up. How much longer are you going to drag this story Erin????
The book was bad. I really like this series, but the writing in this one was atrocious. There were barely any scenes with her love interests, and it was essentially a filler book. Also - I was very confused as to how it started.
(Spoilers) Book 14 had lots of things in it that makes this series amazing. Finally we got to see Tasmin taking time with her mates instead of them barely being in the book. There also were more adventures in this book instead of so many lectures.
There also seemed to be less overall negativity in this book which was better the last couple kinda put me in a depresh… especially with all the chaos going on in the world I don’t always want to drown in that type of feeling when I’m reading.
I did love the idea of Tasmin telling her own story via social media and how that could have been healing and empowering. I found the whole online interaction between craftsman and Tasmin cringeworthy. She should seriously invent a divorce rune. #you’rewelcome. I also wondered why she was live streaming everything from her workouts to good etc. I would think she would want some stuff private. Especially after she made several live-stream mistakes.
A couple of things that niggled….Erin uses odd grammar and sentence structure that is often confusing. I sometimes have to reread multiple times and the meaning is clear as mud. Often times it’s hard to tell what is going on when Tasmin is onto some type of scandal but is vaguely alluding to details.
I don’t want to criticize too much because honestly despite the flaws this is one of the best stories about fairies I have ever read. I’m do think with a major edit it could be hugely successful. Please keep writing❤️❤️❤️. I love this series and usually never leave reviews except for you!
My one criticism is I didn't like the tiktoks between Tamsin and Julian. I loathe him and don't want any redemption plot for him because he' a selfish and has let Tamsin down time again. I thought Lucca showing up out of the blue was random, maybe a plot hole that needed to be fixed? Tamsin was so done with him that I don't understand her tolerance of him showing up in her hotel room??!! At the beginning of the book Tamsin was her old self and out so many boundaries in place but they seemed to just crumble again as the book went on.
There are so many sub characters that I found it hard to track at times. Again, I felt that this was wrapping up plot holes rather than strengthening the narrative.
I may sound very critical but I still adore thirties and can't wait for the next book.
This was awesome!!! We never get to really read what goes on in the summer with Tamsin so this was a treat. I loved that it slowed down a bit to really show what’s going on in her life, what she’s going through and what is happening to make it better. It was a different perspective to see without the distraction of Artemis. If you haven’t read this series you need to. Im on the Tamsin Train so the long haul, there are many derailments but the fun is watching Tams kick some a** and get back to driving forward.
Please note the following review encompasses books 13 through 19 of the SERIES. As each book depends on the prior books, I am not reviewing each individually to cut down on repetition. Following this review, I will be reviewing the final six books of the series with one final review of the series as a whole.
As always, I will endeavor to minimize spoilers, but please read at your own risk.
If you've read my earlier reviews, you know that I have been raving about this series since I picked up Upended Life. I have honestly been quite surprised by how much I have enjoyed what I've read so far, and the emotional investment has been staggering. So it is with a heavy heart that I say I have found some issues in this set of books that have slightly turned me off.
I do not enjoy game playing in relationships, real or fictional. I do not enjoy recurring relationship problems. Unfortunately, that is a reality of this fictional world. Don't get me wrong, it's all very well written and handled rather admirably by the individual characters, but I personally find it tiresome. I am VERY pleased to be able to note that these situations have, for the most part, been resolved.
I do appreciate that the characters do not always, or even frequently, choose the easy path, and one bonus to a 26 book series is that as a reader, I am able to watch the character development. Even though it is written from a single PoV, I feel invested in more of the characters than I am probably meant to. I relish being able to dig deep into their psyches and trying to guess what comes next.
As I start Layering Resentment, I am more than a little sad to realize that I'm starting that final stretch towards the conclusion. I have only taken about half an hour since I finished book 19, and I am already jonesing for my next fix. Artemis University may have ruined me, but in the best possible manner.
However, before I dive into the next book, I do want to add a content warning of sorts because mental health matters. Contained in the story so far, you will find racism, classism, prejudice and past trauma (physically, emotionally, and smexually.) There are also forced abductions, bullying outside of the harem, references to ongoing trafficking, violence, attempted forced mating and SA, intimate partner abuse, family disconnect and related trauma from both sides, and discussion of forced breeding. Characters have ongoing mental health issues, including anxiety, panic attacks, depression, fear of abandonment, grief & loss, self-worth issues, and suicidal ideation. Please know your limits and read responsibly.
Wow, what an emotional rollercoaster this book was. I cried a lot (of lone tears randomly), and giggled in other places. I had to take 2 days to ruminate over how I felt about this book before I could even write a review. Not sure I can still put it into words that actually express what I'm thinking. Loads happens in this book, but then again, not enough happens. That seems to be a recurring theme to this author's books! LOL I can't complain, I'm addicted to most of her series. A lot of the readers mention that it's like taking 2 steps forward, but then taking 5 steps backward sort of thing for the FMC. Definitely can't wait for the next in this series to come out.
SPOILERS below:
*I never thought I'd get behind Neldor for Tamsin to have as a love interest/mate, but wow, he's made a remarkable comeback to being an actual great character & what a friend he's become to Tamsin. I wish there could be "real life" TikTok challenge videos that they did together in the book to see. *Hudson, wow, I had my doubts about him in the earlier books of being right for Tamsin as a mate, but that guy made a 100% turn around & is on up there as epic book boyfriend material. *Then there's Darby, I'm put off by his behavior in this book. I don't understand why he's being a jealous jerk. Tamsin does not give him any reason to be, she's extra careful, except random comments about "good looking" guys being good looking. She's been more than fair with him. I'm seriously glad she's not given a piece of her heart to him, cause I think he's going to blow it between them. He refers to himself as a "man", but I think he still acts immature enough to still be a "boy". *I definitely don't know what to make of the new character, Luke. He's only near Tamsin 2 times in the book, so he may not be permanent or become anything other than a named villain. He's a conundrum that I'm not sure I want to speculate about, other than being a bad-guy, since he's part of the underground. But then again, Neldor was reformed enough to now be likable, so maybe...? *The thing with Lucca, I still hate him & want him gone from Tamsin's life. And for him to just show up in her hotel room- twice (uninvited & while she's sleeping & disappointed the second time that she's clothed instead), yea, that's creepy to me & not about her needs at all. So in other words, he's not really changed his selfish behavior. I'd have blown a gasket over that if I'd been Tamsin. He's pushing it with her again, and I don't like it one bit. *The whole thing with Julian Craftsman & his mom, wow, I have no words, but if I did it would all be bad words. All the messages he tries to get to her thru his online social media thing, wow, all selfish & about his needs, not really taking her emotions into account at all- again. Like he's trying to get public support to force her to take him back. She warned him when she took him back the last time, he didn't get another chance. I'll be disappointed if she caves from that & gives him another chance. That whole thing with him & his mom is so toxic to her. I really hope she can break the bond with him & get that piece of her heart back.
Honestly I see how great the some of the plots of these books are. I really do. However, 14 books in and this girl just refuses to have much character development. I ignored the really bad editing errors in the beginning books. I really wanted to see where the story went. It’s the same. She spirals allllll the time. She has super high expectations of her partners and friends, which is cool, but they aren’t allowed to have any expectations of her. I have a pretty messy mind and I couldn’t keep up with her back and forth. She was fun and feisty in the first few books. It went to whiny, annoying, and hypocritical as a character though. I would lose complete track of characters as so many are constantly coming and going. A lot of characters feel so forced. Her character has become to feel forced. Some plot growth and development would have been amazing to see but after 14 books I haven’t seen it so I’ll have to end my journey here. I absolutely hate not finishing a series and that very rarely happens with me but I have to tap out on this series.
I never watched soaps. I'm not a fan of tv series unless I can watch all episodes. I love a beginning, middle and the end. EXCEPT when it comes to this series. I really am shamelessly hooked on this series.
In Necessary Respite, we did have some breakthroughs and I feel that some of the Fairies are finally opening their eyes. There was a few sweet times with Hudson and Darby. I honestly really didn't like the Tik Tok videos between Julian and Tamsin. And while some might complain that there wasn't enough in plot development, I would argue this is why Erin is so great at world building. She really illustrates the development of Tamsin's character, even giving us some great peeks into her backstory. We SEE clearly why our characters are behaving the way they do and she's doesn't gloss over the struggles they face. None are perfect, but at least we can understand them. There's no real INSTA anything. Hell, she is really drawing a clear picture of Nalder and even I'm coming around to him.
Honestly, that REALLY is Erin's strength - the world and character building. Yes, sometimes it might be slow, but it's well thought out and I'm here loving every minute of it. Seriously can't wait for the next one - or maybe another in the Succubus series. Because I'm honestly loving that too...
Tamsin is one of my all time favorite FMCs. I love that she is a feminist, works for equality, works for social justice and is a badass fighter. SPOILERS:
I do not like how much time was spent with her back and forth with Craftsman with the videos- it just seemed so BENEATH her. She's become a mogul. She has two supportive and loving mates. She is acting on her strengths and smarts in all areas, finally pulling the trigger and taking firm action on so many different things. Perhaps this is leading to some kind of amazing resolution in an upcoming book, but it really, really bothered me. If anything, she might have taken a bit more understanding view of how Craftsman got into the position he's in due to dark magic. But since she blew past reflecting on that, it seemed disingenuous to then stoop to pouring out her heart in videos. It just detracted a lot from an otherwise excellent push forward in this series.
I have loved reading this series! So sad it’s not finished yet because I totally can’t wait for Tamsin’s full happily ever after. Most of the time when a series is longer than 4 or 5 books I lose interest because I feel like it’s too much of the same stuff dragging the series out. That feeling didn’t hit me at all until about book 10 and then it was short lived. I love Tamsin and the journey we get to take with her throughout this. Her growth and friendships, and her clarity in viewing the world around her make this story amazing. I felt the intro to book 18 was really confusing. I had to go back and double check that I hadn’t skipped a book. There’s a bit of minor editing that would really make the reading so much better. Missing words and improper (or no) use of commas were the biggest culprits, but it was still worth reading. As much as I loved it this book isn’t for everyone. There’s plenty of language, sex, and some violence that would be disturbing to some.
As usual Ms. Flynn doesn’t disappoint. If you have been reading this series from the beginning this one gives Tams some relief from all the troublemakers. I can’t wait to see what comes next. If you haven’t read this series yet and are thinking about, please don’t think anymore. It has it all sexy mates that worship the FMC and mates that treat her like garbage then get dumped, friends that have your back and friends that leave you when you need them the most. The FMC is a bad ass when she needs to be and cuddle monster at other times. There are fairies (good and bad), shifters of all types, and dragons, oh my, the storyline and world building should be the envy of every author. READ EVERYTHING FROM THIS AUTHOR, You won’t be disappointed.
I love that Tamsin is finally working towards fighting back to herself. I was so sad with how she was being treated and how different she was from the fierce woman we first meet in the beginning. But she is back and fiercer than ever. I can’t wait to see even more progress she makes and hope that the commanders will finally start to listen to her. I think it is progressing that way but they still have some more work to do. There wasn’t a lot of plot in this one to progress her relationships with her mates but I am glad to see that Julian tried to apologize and that Tamsin stuck to herself and wouldn’t accept being walk on again by him. I can’t wait for the next book because I am curious to see how the regular fairy takes the nobles being gone.
For so long in Tamsin’s journey it’s been so much pain and disappointment but what I like best about this book is that it ended on a victory, however small. Tamsin character never fails to draw me in because every bit of her stress, worries, insecurities, responsibilities, etc are handled by her in such a realistic way. Her trauma heals but still haunts her and the reality of the world disappoints, especially the people in it. Yet you see through every action she takes, in spite of the heavy weight on her shoulders, how strong loving and dedicated she is. I love how she is finally standing up and speaking up to everyone and am anxiously waiting for the next book of her amazing life.
This book out of all of them so far, was completely unnecessary. It was mostly filler and didn't seem to add any new info or move the overall plot of the series. I don't usually give negative critiques but I'm getting a little frustrated with the series because nothing is ever resolved. Some of the same issues from book 1 still exist in book 14 so releasing a book that isn't helping further the storyline just seems a bit like a waste to me. Every time a new one comes out I think that it will surely be the last one and we'll have answers but the author just isn't ready to bring it on home. You could probably save the money and skip this one. Just a personal opinion.
This girl is a war strategist machine!!!!😲 I cannot get over it sometimes. LOL! I guess we're getting to the part where tamsin will have challenges to her strength. I don't want to see her caught. I really hope she will always have the upperhand. A girl can hope.
I feel so bad for her n Julian. Their relationship has become so painful n toxic. Yet I still wish shed take him back so I'm drowning in the toxic with them. 😢 I REALLY wish Hudson would stop using 'shorty' as his nickname for tamsin. 😰 So awful....😩 It was really random n weird to see lucca pop up everywhere n now I'm wondering if the author is going to be putting them back together later on.
I'm not sure I have words. While this has been one of the best yet it is also heartbreaking. While a.lot of progress has been made...... A lot is still pretty horrible. Talk about an oh crap im gonna die waiting for the next one HEA!!!! Just.....wow. Wow. I'm like.... Holy sh#t..... My heart is racing and breaking for my girl and I just keep thinking holy sh#t!!! Congrats .Ms Flynn! An amazing book and have like broke me (but in a. Good im speechless way) much love to you and vader! On pins and needles till the next one but am rereading the series cause I need me.my dose Of Tamsin and Co.
Great continued journey for Tamsin. I feel like there is strengthening and development in her relationships with Hudson and Darby, though they were very off scene for the end chunk. I am still very hopeful about a certain someone getting another chance (but I recognize it can’t be rushed if it’s gonna happen) while I have side-eye about someone else reappearing in her life (thought the book was closed on him and didn’t miss him). The new potential suitor has me bouncing in my seat (love a misunderstood bad boy). It might be nice to have a book in this series that’s a little less plot drama and more chance for poor Tamsin to catch her breath and explore all her relationships.
Tamsin is back and still stressed as ever. She’s handling everything much better as she grows and matures. Darby and Hudson are as supportive as ever. I want her back with Craftsman so badly, so so badly! I’m glad he stood up to his mom, finally! I don’t think that the unmaking with Luca fully worked as he’s sniffing her out and wanting to be around her. Naylor yes pretty please with sugar on it! I want them together! This hot wolf fairies whatever he is, is definitely intriguing and I’d like more of him possibly as her wolf mate?? The elders, nobles need to become fae dog kibble. I wish a love interest for Lagalos he deserves happiness.
I'm so happy that Tamsin is putting her foot down more. It's amazing how she handles all the bad that comes her way and there's always a ton.
I am a fan of Hudson and am always thrilled when he shows up. I wasn't a fan of Neldor but he's been growing on me these last few books. I'd still like to deck Julian. I used to really like him. What he's put Tams through and continues to put her through is not cool.
I'm looking forward to seeing who else Tams puts in their place, who she saves, how the hobgoblins and fae dogs handle those who wrong her, and if more faeries and sups get their acts together.
I am just gunna say I love Erin's writing style with this series like its a weekly episodic tv show I know some people have read this series to a point or so far moron review s and not liked Tamsin but I do and I must stress I want her and all thee guys Julian and Lucca included...possibly Luke hmmm to be together and I know it sounds crazy with how both Julian and Lucca treated her but still I'm a lover of HEA and all her men no matter how they grovel. I also have seen reviews of people bashing Tamsin thou I don't see it not saying she's perfect but who is . loved thee fight scene towards thee end amazing can't wait for next.
I have loved this series from the first book to this one. I had hope that this story would continue, but I understand that is not practical. At some point I hope that Tamsin and her mates would get their HEA. Erin has done a wonderful job in writing Tamsin’s story. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series and even if it’s the last I’m happy I started this journey and look to the in the Artemis’ story. Thank you Erin and all of those that helped to make this story so exciting. Also making Tamsin’s journey inspiring to those struggling.
Absolutely love this series and always have each book on pre-order even though I subscribe to the Kindle unlimited membership. I also reread the whole series just before the new book comes out. This one is such a heart wrenching 0ne. I would love to see more of how Tamsin and Nalder relationship matures and gets closer. Just truly love it.
On a different note, never apologized for taking time for yourself, especially when it is health related. Plus I am happy to hear Vader is finally recovered.
