A HERO’S WORK IS NEVER DONE! Enjoying a rare moment of respite, Satou and his party return to the royal capital to be decorated for their accomplishments. But there, they hear from Princess Sistina that the royal symbol—the cherry blossom—has ceased to bloom. Taking it upon themselves to investigate while enjoying the sights, the party inevitably catches wind of a situation they never would have expected...
By and large I'm still enjoying this series, and looking forward to each installment. However, this one was a bit disappointing. Satou is amazingly overpowered, that's part of the point and the charm of the series, but that means that in order to build tension the author has to make him "carry the idiot ball" sometimes. Satou admits that he's very bad at mysteries and can never figure out whodunnits, but that's not really enough to excuse just how oblivious he has to be throughout this episode to get to the confrontation the author wants for the climax, and since this time there are quite a few injured and dead people as a result it leaves a kind of sour taste for something that's designed explicitly as a pure escapist Over Powered Main Character story.
It was nice to see each of the girls get a chance to shine saving people on their own and not just in a team with Satou sitting back and making sure nothing gets too dangerous, so I won't say I disliked it, but I'm hoping the next couple go back to leisurely adventures and sightseeing.
So the suspicious Cardinal was evil after all. Satou keeps foiling their plans, so they decide to go all in and bring forth the Demon God. It works too, but Satou and company has aid from the Ancestral King Yamato.
Another amazing addition to a wonderful and heartwarming series.
As with all books in this series this one picks up nearly exactly where the last one ended. The story continues its laid back and heartwarming pace as the group tours the capital. However, they quickly discover the shadows are hiding more than just a little litter. As the story progresses we learn more about a couple mystery characters and the obvious person winds up being a bad guy. (Who'd have guessed?) Finally ending in an epic fight between many groups all more or less cleared up by the main character. Over all, despite how predictable this series can be it is still among my top 3 favorite series. If you like light novels and aren't reading it, you are missing out.
Like the other volumes, Death March 17 is partially slice-of-life with Satou and friends enjoying a relaxed life while living their daily lives and hunting the occasional monsters. The other part is dealing with the by now familiar demon summoning villains, who do have grown a bit smarter over the last few months of defeat after defeat. At times it can be a bit slow paced, and Satou a bit obtuse to plots around him in his deep sated wish to keep things relaxing.
Still, if you enjoyed the previous volumes, you will like this one.
At long last I can catched up with the latest English translation volume. The story became a bit repetitive, but still interesting to follow. Another adventure in the other world after being transmigrated 🤣
