I've known this classic Belgian story for years since I watched the animated version about a dozen times throughout my childhood. It's about an incredibly strong young man who travels through the country in the 15th century, fearlessly fighting injustice whenever he sees it. I love the general premise of the story and the picture the author sketches of life in these parts all those centuries ago. It does get quite repetitive after a while though. Fighting injustice and defending the helpless and innocent is great and really exciting at first, but when it's all that happens it gets slightly boring.
As a child, I loved this book, I read it repeatedly and I adored Jan. Now as an adult, I just didn't feel that connection with it anymore. Sometimes much loved children's books must be left in the past, this one is one of those.
