I'm not exactly sure why there are so many low ratings for this book on goodreads. It's not the most original or creative piece of fiction, but I certainly found it entertaining. If I can read more than 100 pages of a book in a day (and I did with Atmosphere), that means it certainly has my attention and isn't a slow-going affair.
Sometimes, I think we all just need to step back, take a deep breath, and stop expecting a profound literary experience in every single thing we read. After all, some books should just be fun, and I found this novel to be just that.

Frank Ballaro ist gerade auf dem Heimweg und geschafft von einem schweren und heftigen Fall, den er als Ermittler beim NYPD gerade abgeschlossen hat. Als er vor seinem Wohnhaus aus dem Auto steigt tritt er zu allem Überfluss auch noch in eine Pfütze. Er ärgert sich darüber, bis er feststellt, dass diese Pfütze nicht aus Wasser besteht. Ein blutiger Rinnsaal fließt den Bordstein entlang und sofort werden seine Polizistengene geweckt. Er folgt dieser Spur, die aus einer Gasse kommt. Plötzlich läuft aus dieser ein splitterfasernackter junger Mann heraus mitten auf die Straße. Ein Auto kann nicht mehr bremsen und erwischt den Jungen tödlich. Ballaro eilt zu ihm und wundert sich über das seltsame Verhalten des Sterbenden. Dieser haucht schließlich noch ein Wort: “Atmosphäre…” Für Ballaro beginnt hiermit eine Jagd, die ihm Dinge zeigen wird, die er nie für möglich gehalten hätte und die ihn zudem noch mit vielen Schrecklichkeiten konfrontieren wird.
Michael Laimo hat mit diesem Buch einen Krimi für starke Mägen geschaffen, man sollte jedoch auch dem Übernatürlichen nicht abgeneigt sein.
Der Protagonist ist ein alternder, alleinerziehender Polizistenveteran, der sich mit seinen Meinungen zur heutigen Welt teilweise schwer tut. Er hadert etwas mit seinem Leben, seiner gescheiterten Ehe und der modernen Welt. Genau in diese Situation hinein wird er mit der Jagd nach der ominösen Atmosphäre beschäftigt. Eigentlich gehört sie gar nicht in seinen Zuständigkeitsbereich, er gilt in diesem Fall nur als Zeuge, doch durch alte Kontakte kann er trotzdem mitermitteln und verwickelt sich immer tiefer in eine Geschichte, deren Wurzeln sehr viel tiefer gehen als vermutet und deren Konsequenzen sehr weitreichend sind.
Was ist die Atmosphäre und warum werden mit ihr im Zusammenhang immer glatzköpfige Männer in Schwarz genannt? Das werde ich euch natürlich an dieser Stelle nicht verraten, jedoch konnte der Autor mich mit der Auflösung des Ganzen doch überraschen. Erst recht spät ist klar, was wirklich passiert und was dahinter steckt. Bis dahin lässt Laimo den Leser ebenso wie seinen Protagonisten im Dunkeln tappen, dass aber immer wieder von neuen schrecklichen Szenen erhellt wird. Für schwache Mägen ist dieses Buch garantiert nichts. Selbst ich musste an einer bestimmten Stelle schlucken und habe das Buch da tatsächlich gefragt, ob das gerade wirklich passiert.
Das Buch ist zu Beginn mit einer sehr düsteren Atmosphäre geschrieben, die an Noir-Filme erinnert. Laimo schreibt gut verständlich und flüssig und hält die Spannung auf einem guten Niveau, so dass jedenfalls für mich keine Längen bemerkbar waren.
Die Geschichte wird nicht nur aus der Sicht Balleros erzählt, sondern auch noch von anderen handelnden Personen und auch von Opfern der Atmosphäre. Man gewinnt so einen guten Einblick in das Geschehen und obwohl man auch auf die Täterseite schaut, wird doch erst sehr spät klar, worum es nun wirklich geht und was hinter dem Ganzen steckt.
Ich bin kein typischer Krimileser, zudem gibt es am Protagonisten Ballaro eine Sache, die ich für die Geschichte unnütz und störend fand. Dieser wird nämlich als dreigespaltene Persönlichkeit beschrieben, aber eben in der Lightvariante, so dass Außenstehende nichts mitbekommen. Zudem gibt es keinerlei Hinweise auf den Grund, warum er schizophren handeln sollte. Das hat dazu geführt, dass ich dem Buch doch etwas an Punkten abziehen musste.
Trotzdem ist “Atmosphäre” von Michael Laimo ein gelungener Krimi mit übernatürlichen Elementen und heftigen Szenen, der für Genrefans durchaus lesenswert ist.

Michael Laimo, Atmosphere (Leisure, 2002)
The first hundred fifty or so pages of Michael Laimo's debut novel are your typical kidnapping-murder-mystery with a twist, nothing we haven't seen before, with somewhat subpar writing thrown into the mix. There were a few times I'd have been flirting with just not finishing it at all, were not the pace so quick. But it hits critical mass, and suddenly becomes one of the finest premises in a thriller in recent years. Almost enough to forgive the subpar writing.
Frank Ballaro is a New York City homicide detective a couple of years from retirement. On his way home early one morning after twelve hours of paperwork on a recently-finished case, he gets out of his car and steps into a puddle of blood. Investigating, he finds a horribly mutilated teen, who runs past him in terror straight into the path of a taxi. As they wait for help to arrive, the kid whispers one word to Ballaro: "Atmosphere." Ballaro and his longtime friend Hector Rodriguez are quickly drawn into one of the oddest cases of kidnapping and murder anyone's ever seen.
The first half of the book is unabashedly setup, and can be a little difficult to get through. Laimo makes it as easy as possible by keeping the pace rapid. Once things take their right turn at suspension-of-disbelief, there's nothing you haven't seen before in a number of TV shows and movies, but Laimo cribs together so many disparate ideas and works them into a narrative whole that it's hard not to just sit back and wonder what sort of twisted mind came up with such a wide-ranging bunch of ideas to throw into this melting pot.
There are a few extreme bits, but for the most part Laimo is more from the Charles L. Grant school of horror than the Robert Devereaux school; not much in here is going to make the reader of modern horror (especially that from Leisure Books) cringe much. This is more straight thriller than horror novel, and should appeal to fans of the genre who are willing to let belief fly out the window.
Aside from some deadwood (cliches, badly-written sentences, oddly out of place words, that sort of thing), Laimo's first novel is a stand up sit down bang up ride, well worth the price of admission. *** ½

A bit too wordy for me. Far too many metaphors.
Every other sentence was: "It was as if" or "It was like" or "making it seem as if" etc.
Takes a long time to get going, and when it did finally start moving I'd already had enough.
I think this was one of Laimo's first books, not a bad effort. I'll try another one.

Very interesting. I like how Frank had different personalities and they would take over depending on the situation he found himself in.

When I have a lot of homework to do, a lot of tests to study for, or a lot of family-related gatherings to attend, I usually read a book to distract myself from the
consequences of not doing what I should be doing. Atmosphere by Michael Laimo is not a very good guilt-reliever. It is a fun little read with a pleasant mixture of
horror, police procedure, and historical science fiction without the historical, but it does not do that much for your brain. In other words, it is not complex,
interesting, or shocking enough to get those troublesome thoughts of failure or of the tears of Gramma Pinchycheeks out of your head. What it does do is waste some of
your time in a nice way. Sure, you may have other obligations, but why do them when you can read Laimo's surprisingly well-written first novel. It is a better effort
than Deep in the Darkness for sure, but it is still just a C or maybe just a c. It has my three Fs: fast, forgettable, and fun but I can give it little more praise than
that. The point I am making is that this novel is good for a time filler, but it will not banish all of your mental troubles like a good Stephen King will. Forget
psychologists; King has taken so much weight of stress off my shoulders that I should pay him to...wait, I already do that.

I was disappointed in this. I found the way people acted to be unrealistic, the whole thing didn't really come together right, and all horror novels are far fetched, but this one just seemed especially unrealistic, with people acting in ways I don 't think they'd act in real life. The main character accepted the crazy premise of aliens far too easily, he also wasn't very likable, and the writing wasn't that good. Maybe three starts if I'm generous.
