The Bonegates #2

Assassin Witch

Rate this book

A forbidden love. A dying kingdom. A cruel queen.

Now that the Successional is over, my siblings and I are ranked soldiers and royals on a mission. Two missions actually.

One: Find allies in the mafia-run western realms of Faerie.

Two: Kill the Queen of Buyan.

I don't relish the latter, but her death would mean freedom and happiness for the fae of Lyonesse, who I've come to adore.

One, in particular, I might even be coming to love.

Garret is kind and perfect, but for now I need to stay away. I'm too busy and not even sure Father will let us be together.

At least not unless I prove myself and help free our kingdom from the noose Queen Pari has wrapped around the neck of Lyonesse.

So I must sneak into Buyan and assassinate the most powerful queen in fae history.

Right . . . that's all . . .

Sinkers save us all.

Assassin Witch is perfect for fans of the Throne of Glass Series and The Cruel Prince. With danger lurking in every faerie wood and mafia-run city the royals journey through, it will keep you enthralled long past the last page.

Oh there is nothing better than a selfish father who pits his children against each other to build jealousy and knock morale out of the hemisphere...lol

So life in the fae lands is definitely different for Lana and her half-human siblings...
SIbling rivalry continues after the successional is done and dusted.

Lana feels she need to overachieve to gain her fathers approval when honestly she should be looking for a way to bring her siblings together as a team but hopefully Lana will learn and grow over time and eventually become a true leader and have a good relationship with all of her siblings well all except Casimir that brother is super sketchy...lol
I'm also left wondering so many things What is Meegra really up to??? Is Queen Pari truly a bad Queen??, is King Oberon more than he comes across as?? and will Lana and Garrett finally, finally give in to their attraction...lol so many questions so many plot twist and so many awesome breadcrumbs that left me wanting more and my mind is going in all different directions which I love...

Assassin Witch is a wonderful second book in this amazing fantasy adventure, I love the world, I adore the characters and I have a serious love for the author's imagination and her ability to bring these wonderful stories to life for me.

The Ugliness Of Jealousy!!😔💔

We return to Faerie right where we left off. Lana is in her first meeting with the King, Her Father. Although she'd started to see living for his acceptance & approval weren't the goals she should be aiming for, it seems having one on one time with him has thrown that enlightenment out of the window!!🙈😕 The more time he lavishes on her the worse her need gets to be the best in his eyes.😡

When she is given a task by the King she's determined to excel. However she was ill prepared. She's left feeling inadequate, jealous & starts to become paranoid. She isolates herself ever more from her siblings as she becomes ever more determined to regain their Father's favour by being the People's & his Saviour!!😱😔

Wow, I didn't like Lana very much in this book!😢 She came across as weak willed, selfish & super jealous, it was really unattractive.😔😕 It was such a shame after she appeared to 'see the light' in book #1 when her focus seemed to turn towards improving the lives of the people in her Family's Realm & much less on her 'want & need' for Daddy's approval, acceptance & love!😒 Crystal is quick to shove her accomplishments in her face, which is equally as gross & much of Lana's jealousy & inadequacies are centred around Crystal.😔 Lana is fantastic with the ordinary working families & I love that side of her, I very much feel that's her biggest strength!💕 I was gutted for Garrett in this book 😢

This is a gripping & engaging read. We got to know some more of the siblings better.👍✨ There are some extremely tense parts - Nail biting!!😳 Roll on Book #3 🌟🎉

Nothing about an Ashley McLeo series is typical. The rules of magic are hers alone, just as she blends the users of magic into her own unique forms. In this series, all sorts of supernatural beings are blended together with the Fae creating an unending variety of enthralling new characters. Join this great new series now!

Lana has won her place in her father’s kingdom. She is to be the supreme general of his forces. She would love nothing more than a bit of time to sit back and recover from the grueling weeks of training it took to get her to this point. But now she must work harder than ever to prove to everyone that she deserves her position. Most of all Lana fears letting her father down.

How can Lana excel when some of her siblings seem so much smarter, to know so much more than she about this new world of Faerie? Her light magic may be rare here, but she has so little command of it. She hasn’t even had her Faerie power awakened yet. The magic of her siblings, her subordinates, seems so much stronger than hers.

With her father’s kingdom headed toward war with their neighbors, can Lana become the leader she needs to be? Does she have it in her to assassinate the neighboring queen and win the battle?

I really enjoyed this book. Lana is the General but hasn’t a clue what to do. Her magic isn’t really progressing and she knows nothing about leading an army. Crystal on the other hand is progressing beyond expectations and doesn’t let Lana forget it.
Lana starts studying war strategies and training harder than ever determined to be the best for her father and her people.
The plan is to take back their bonegate and restore the kingdoms magic.
The siblings are preparing. Join them and you won’t be disappointed.

This is a really exciting sequel to Hawk Witch. There are few times when I have been as frustrated with an MC as have been with Lana. That is a testament to Ms. Mcleo's good writing. If the story weren't so well written and the characters so compelling, I wouldn't care enough to be frustrated.

This is book two of The Bonegates series and the main character is Lana, who along with some of her fellow but unknown, brothers and sisters had made it through the Successional. They are all children of King Oberon, born of human mothers and raised in the Old Land. They only had two weeks to prepare for the Successional and two of her siblings she had begun to like, were killed by their evil brother Nigel! Now Lana has been named the second in line of succession to the throne of Lyonesse. But their kingdom is dying since Queen Pari of Buyan, stole their Bonegate, leaving their land without magic. She is also now Oberon’s General and some of his other children resent her for that and think they are better suited to the position. Oberon has one son born of his fae wife, Prince Casimir, who is the heir and doesn’t think much of his fellow half siblings. Lana gets to have meetings with their father most evenings, after a day of training, which leaves some very jealous. She has been given the task of assassinating the Queen of Buyan, but first to gain some allies from the western realms, swordsmen and giants. King Oberon believes she and her siblings will be able to get around the wards at Buyan.
She no longer has her personal guard Garret, now her position has been confirmed and wants to have him around still. She isn’t quite sure how her father may take a relationship between one of his children and one of his guards. She still has a lot to learn about Faerie and wants to desperate help all of the Fae of Lyonesse. She has seen the devastation around the city and the circumstances everybody lives under will do all she can to help, even if that means she must kill someone else. She feels under great pressure to prove herself in her new position in control of her father’s forces, whilst Prince Casimir is in charge of the specialised unit of the Feathered Fae. She isn’t spending time with her other siblings and this causes quite a few issues of jealous and mistrust, even from her best friend Finn and even her hawk familiar! She puts far too much pressure on herself to be perfect, especially with Meegra and Crystal disliking her closeness with the king and her higher position. She is sent off on her first missions, but finds herself being undermined by one particular sibling in particular and matters don’t go as planned. She feels she has failed her father and begins to wear herself out trying to become the best of them all and not sharing any details of their most important mission. Not the best way to get anything to go well, as they will soon find out! Who is truly the worst leader is still a huge secret, with Oberon willing to play his children against each other and the rest of them knowing nothing really about Queen Pari. A large number of siblings to get used to, so not a book you want to jump into, without having read the first book in the series beforehand. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Brilliant second book in the Bonegates series

This is the second in the Bonegates series and it follows straight on in the action from the first. The characters are fantastic and well written, you can feel what they are going through while reading and understand their conflicts. There's magic, action, friendships, treachery, twists and a great cliffhanger end.

Lana had been brought to the kingdom of King Oberon with her friend Finn where they had discovered they were his children with several others, all born of human mothers and raised in the Old Land. After only two weeks of training they had to take part in the Successional (to determine ranks) and Lana lost two of her new siblings when they were killed by another. But they've all learnt that the kingdom they are in is dying as their families Bonegate has been stolen by another Queen, leaving them without magic.

Lana and her siblings are given their titles and set their missions, to find allies to help them fight and to kill the Queen of Buyan. Lana, as King Oberon’s General, is resented by some of her other siblings and she has to be careful as she's lost her personal guard Garret now she has her own rank; though she wishes he was still around.

Nothing is as easy as it seems with Lana rushing into decisions as well as rivalry and jealousy causing distrust between siblings. There are also some great relationships starting to develop with some lovely moments away from the palace.

Alongside Lana and Finn, and her siblings, the other great characters are the guards who were assigned to protect them in the first book, the Feathered Fae (the King’s elite) particularly their ‘captain’, the King, the Queen, his rival, and the people of her kingdom. No-one is who they seem at first.

There are plenty of secrets to be uncovered by Lana and her siblings while they learn about the new land they are living in and the rules and traditions. Friendships are made, tested, lost and renewed and I found I couldn’t put this down.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Lana is struggling with the fact that she is a Princess and that her father is a Fae and to top it all off she has just been assigned General to her father’s army as well as second in line to the throne. Oh and being Princess is really upsetting her siblings. They are not so thrilled that Lana is the Princess and heir to the throne and they are not. They try to undermine Lana every way they can. They don’t like following her orders. Lana just wants to help out the kingdom by trying to get their magic back.

Lana’s first assignment is to assassinate the neighboring Queen but before she can do that she needs a bigger army so the first thing on her agenda is to of course get a bigger army. To obtain the training she needs in the field so to speak she has to go out and find that army. So she takes her team of soldiers and her siblings to see the giants to make a deal with them to fight with her march against the queen.

There is a lot of squabbling going on amongst the siblings to start their own war right inside the kingdom. Lana must somehow bring the siblings together long enough to accomplish her task. Can she pull it off? Will the siblings stop fighting each other long enough to take on the Queen?

Assassin Witch is filled with action from the first page right up until the last. There is betrayal in the kingdom. I have my doubts about a number of characters like the King is he the person we are lead to believe he is or maybe the Queen is not the person we are lead to believe she is or what about one the siblings are they the person we are lead to believe? Assassin Witch is a very intense read that will keep you flipping the pages unable to put it down trying to figure out who can be trusted and who can’t.

I highly recommend Assassin With to all fans of fantasy and the paranormal with Fae and witches and magic.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review :)

Assassin Witch is the 2nd book in the Bonegates series. The book begins with Lana getting her much-aniticipated conversation with her father, the king of Lyonesse. She has such a desire to talk to him and get to know him, she is so happy to finally get some one-on-one time with him! After they talk about her life, make other small talk, etc., he drops a bombshell on her: he wants her and her siblings to assassinate Queen Pari of Buyan!

Naturally, Lana has her doubts, because she barely has control over her powers and doesn't feel quite strong enough to carry on an assassination attempt. Nevertheless, she tries to fake it til she makes it, and it is painfully obvious for her that she is unprepared and knows little about how things work in Faerie. Because of this, she finds it hard to gain her sibling's respect.

Lana struggles quite a bit throughout this book, because she finds it hard to balance becoming a more knowledgeable Princess General and becoming more friendly with her siblings. In the end, she devises a half decent plan to go after Queen Pari... though it doesn't go exactly as planned. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and definitely leaves me wanting more!

One thing I wanted to add: at one point, a strange fae approached Lana and said to her "Your father is a bad man. He brings the darkness with him and will drown out the light... especially yours, princess." This makes me wonder just how benevolent the king actually is, and what his true intentions are. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

I received a review copy of this book. Fortunately, I very much enjoyed it so that won't impact my review.

This is shaping up to be a really terrific series! I absolutely love the world building Ashley McLeo has done here. The Fae world that the "old world" i.e. our world, kids have come from and are now trying to understand and navigate makes for very intriguing situations and challenges for the characters, and super engaging reading for the reader!

I love that all the female characters - even the not-so-nice ones - are strong, capable, intelligent and kick-ass. They are none of them perfect, but all of them handle things themselves, there are no white knights rescuing them, and I love that! Especially as these are younger people, this series offers absolutely EXCELLENT role models of how women can do things for younger women readers. We need more of this for sure!

The action, suspense and twists and turns in the story make for a very exciting and fast-paced read and there are a few surprises along the way, as well as what seems to be some foreshadowing of perhaps some surprises to come in the next book.

I am hoping that Lana will get past her insecurities about her position and role in the next book. I love her as a character and I really rooted for her to believe in herself more than she was *quite* able to manage this time around. We all grow over time, and I hope Lana will too.

Overall, I find this series - and Ashley McLeo's other books - to be well-written, engaging paranormal stories with very likable interesting characters and exciting story-lines.

This is the 2nd book in the Bonegates series and it begins where book 1 left off. In the first book many of the new princes and princesses discovered new magical abilities and that continues in this book.

Our protagonist, Lana, likes that she gets to spend more time with her father but she also spends a considerable amount of time trying to impress him. Sometimes she succeeds and sometimes she fails. The problem is that Lana has a lot of growing up to do along with learning how to be both a princess and a General. This is not an easy task. When Lana and some of her siblings are sent on a mission she learns that she’s not as knowledgeable about Lyonnesse as she should be and one of her other siblings has to fill in the gaps. This makes Lana feel incompetent and is convinced that she has failed the mission. She is then determined to study everything she can about Lyonnesse so this doesn’t happen on her next mission. Finn and her other siblings try to help Lana, but does she accept their help, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

As the book progresses there’s a little romance, a lot of action and lots of magic being performed. The book does end in a cliffhanger.

I really enjoyed this book and can wait to read the next one.

I love The Bonegate series!

I have to say, after book 1, it seems a bit surreal how this book picks up right after the ending in book 1 and there the MC is immediately thrown in the proverbial deep with becoming the Princess General. Being a General is no easy task and it does feel surreal that there didn’t appear to be a certain schooling for the MC’s rol as General. But the MC feels the same so it’s not that it’s not believable to read about. We follow her struggles and we see that it does take time and practice to be seen as the General. Just a trip to somewhere (keeping it vacue on purpose here), shows the difficulties they all have to face, not only the general but we are reminded that this world is new for all the siblings. Of course, we have the not-so-nice siblings as well but the inexperience, the training, learning and getting better is great to see it all evolving.
And of course, not everything is as it seems, some things were fun to see it play out, other things were a fun discovery and the ending leaves you (or at least me in any case) curious about the next installment so I can’t wait to see what book 3 will entail.

Assasin witch picks up right where Hawk Witch left off and it follows Lana as she learns to be a Princess general while also dealing with a variety of challenges that come with it.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot and I found it to be a faster read than the first book. I liked that we finally got to see more of the Fae Realm and other nearby realms. I also liked the character development while Lana did win the succession things didn’t magically become easy for her and she still has plenty of things to learn. I also liked the development of her relationship with Garrett. I’m fairly wary of romance in young adult books as it usually tends to be toxic or just another love triangle but they both handled things maturely and I’m looking forward to seeing how things develop.

The book also has a lot of foreshadowing elements (potentially) that imply that there might be something else going on in the kingdom that none of the heirs are aware of so I’m looking forward to seeing how that potentially develops in the next book. Overall 5/5 stars.

I was provided a copy of the book from the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Book two in the Bonegates Series continues Lana’s story. Now the Princess General Lana Fullfeather, her life is irrevocably changed. The king has brought her into his confidence, and into the plans for restoring the magic to the kingdom. Now Lana just has to make it happen!

She continues to struggle with her relationship with her siblings, developing her magic, and finding her way through this new life. Her attraction to Garret continues to grow, but now is not exactly the best time to investigate that option! Queen Pari needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. The Lyonesse people need relief. After a less than stellar first mission, she pours herself into preparing for the war.

I was shocked by her discussion with Crystal toward the end, because I did not see that in Lana. But we will see how it factors into the third book! The characters don’t always bring us into their heads all the time. I hope she has learned to use the ‘tools’ around her instead of trying to be everything herself. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Enjoyed the story

Enjoyed the story and I look forward to the next installment.

I would’ve liked just a few more pages to explain the ending. Looking back at the story I could see certain hints that something was different.

Spoilers:

Lana kept pushing herself for her people and the one time she tried to relax she was called out on it which is why she didn’t let herself relax for the rest of the story...instead she trained and trained in order to improve herself and prevent Crystal from attacking her-which she does because crystal is a spoiled brat.

I don’t agree with Crystal’s attitude nor her jabs at Lana. Lana agreeing with her towards the end of the book was incorrect and I think Lana should have stood up for herself and told crystal off. Crystal needs to learn to support others and Lana needs to learn to stand up for herself. Maybe the two can bond and if not become friends at least not enemies.

Anyways I want to know what happens and I will buy the next book as soon as it comes out.

This book starts right where the last left off and there is no time to breathe for the answers you seek will be revealed…

Lana is still trying to please her dad, still trying to him to see her as worthy. I love Lana's relationship with both her father and her siblings because it shows how great Lana is, how strong and independent she can be with a little growth.

Lana tries to become a better person all while realizing that her opinion of herself is the only one that truly matters. Through she is strong, this book read to me like her “teenage years” if you will… she had a lot of growing and learning to do so I didn't always like her in the moment.

I liked the action in this story, the plot kept me interested and left me with as many questions (for book three) as answers I got from book one.
Well written with detailed and interesting characters this book is sure to tantalize!!

After winning the Successional, Lana is not really trying to learn what she needs to know as Princess General of the Lyonesse army. She is training with the rest of her new siblings but has been spending her time reading or going for walks with Naela, her familiar. When King Oberon sends them all on a mission to the Kingdom of Buyan for the purpose of killing Queen Pari, Lana takes it upon herself to learn the kingdom and palace of Buyan, not letting anyone else in on the information. This proves dire as Lana and her sister Crystal are captured and thrown into the dungeon. This story is full of magical abilities and lots of exciting moments of fighting plus it ends with a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.

Book 2 starts immediately after Book 1 as the door to Princess General Lana's father's private chambers opens and Lana gets to finally meet her father. She is asked to be an assassin targeting Queen Pari. There is a lot of interpersonal friction among different cliques of the siblings, fae, and guards. A mission to Zatus to hire mercenaries ended unsuccessfully with a hasty retreat. Negotiations with the giants were more successful. Lana realizes she needs to grow into her new role, develop family bonding, friendships, alliances, and get with the program. The trek to Castle Dalir was difficult. The plan started unraveling once inside the castle. Lana's reluctance to share the mission preparation with the others comes back to bite her. The book ends in a cliffhanger, so have Traitor Witch ready to start for an exciting conclusion.

Cool ideas and interesting magical, Fae setting. Enjoy all the action and intrigue! Lana is still trying to impress her father; a Fae King, which causes her to make some less than smart decisions. She’s trying too hard to gain favor; it gets annoying. Lana is tasked with killing a rival queen, but things aren’t exactly cut and dry with this whole situation. Lana has some interesting magic; she still has lots of room to grow as a person, but I appreciate that she’s a fighter. Overall, another entertaining book in this series; looking forward to reading more! This is book 2 in this series, so I’d recommend starting with book 1 before reading this. This book doesn’t have full resolution, so you’ll need to continue on with the series for the full story.

Fantasy version of “A Lion in Winter”
Parents can’t always stop their children’s sibling rivalries, but they definitely shouldn’t be adding to them!

Having said that, I’d loved to live in a world that has a tome entitled ‘History of Faerie’, wine enhanced by dwarves & elves, and ‘a mythological sunken land off West Ireland’.
Sign me up for the next portal opening!

Some sage advice from the author:
Fave line:
‘Nearly everything could be used as a weapon if you looked at it the right way’

I’ve already enjoyed the first book (‘Hawk Witch’) and I will continue with ‘Traitor Witch’ and ‘Illuminator Witch’. Also, other books by this author (on my second audiobook and I rarely listen to those).

I will admit that it took me longer to get into this book then the last one. Not sure why but once I got into the book I didn't want to out it down. I love how Ashley makes the characters real. Lana struggles with the same thing we normal people struggle with at some point at life. She reminds us that it is ok as long as we recognize it and grow from it. ***Possible spoilers*** I am so happy Lana and Fin are getting back on track with their friendship. I CANNOT WAIT until Lana and Garret gets together. Something told me since Hawk Witch that King Oberon was the "Bad guy" I can't wait to read Traitor Witch to confrim (I assume)

Lana's story continues in the Assasin Witch, which picks up right after book 1.
The story is still really captivating and will darg you inside and hold you till the very end. Lana is a character that I think is one of the most real ones I have ever read about. What will happen when Lana will settle in her new position? Will she manage to achieve everything that she needs to?
The plot was going really smoothly from point to point and I can promise you that this series is getting better and better!

ONE WHIRLWIND ADVENTURE!!!
Chaos and mayhem! Scenes, characters, location and details are written with such realism there's no trouble interpreting each scenario as they play out catapulting this baby to life colorfully. Dealing with the trials and tribulations along with this intense storyline and swirling plot mixed with a myriad of emotions as they meld this jewel together piece by piece. Their personalities are well matched as the revelations and speculations blend and flow. Outstanding job Ashley, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

There was good continuation from book to book and the story progressed very well. The characters are struggling to adjust to their powers and new situations in life, some better than others. It could just be me but I think there is something fishy about the King. I certainly don't think he is handling the situation with his children very well. I am anxious to find out who is leaking info to the enemy and hope the rescue attempt goes off without a hitch. Without giving away too much I can't say more but I recommend this set. They are well worth the read.

All I can say is Ashley McLeo has out done herself with book 2 in the Bonegate series !! If you like Fae in your Faerie this is the series for you !! Lana and Finn embark on a grueling mission, along with their other 8 siblings and the lives they think they are saving might just end up being their own !! 5⭐️‘s for a well written, fast paced story that leaves you screaming I want book 3 and I don’t want to wait until July !! Highly recommend this series for ages 13+ due to graphic death scenes. No true curse words or sex.

The Struggle Goes On . . .

Assassin Witch picks right up from the first book. The world-building is done very well and puts the reader right there with Lana.

Lana has finally struggled to win her rightful place in her father’s kingdom as supreme general of his forces. But this only means she will have to prove her worthiness to everyone else or they won’t respect that hard work really is what earned her the rank. And she also wants her father to be impressed with her. Can she bring herself now to sneak into Buyan to assassinate the most powerful queen in Fae history?

Epic adventure awaits.

Lana is now the Princess General and is in charge of the fullfeather army. The story is pulls you and leaves you wanting to know what is going to happen next. Finn, Crystal and the other siblings are great characters and can be of good help to Lana. I hope Lana grows with strength and becomes the leader they need. I really can’t wait to see where this next book goes!!

A forbidden love, a dying kingdom. Now that the Successional is over Lana and her siblings go on a mission to first find allies then kill the Queen of Buyan in hopes of improving life in Lyonesse. In Assassin Witch (The Bonegates#2) by Ashley McLeo, which I received through Booksprout, not everything went according to plan. I definitely want to know what happens next.
