Amanda Small was abandoned by her parents, and neglected by foster parents who only wanted the state money, until she was finally adopted by Joe Sharp Spear. He took her back to the reservation and showed her unconditional love. He helped her through college where she got a degree in social work and came back to the Rez to help the young people, who are faced with unemployment, poverty and gang violences. She has now lost three teens to what appears to be suicide, but she is convinced that there is something more sinister afoot. She turns to the Brotherhood Protectors and is assigned Cartet Manning, who recently left the SEALS. 5 years ago, after his wife was murdered in her bed- while he wasn't there to protect her. He carries the guilt and never wants ti feel that loss again.Their first impressions of each other are definitely not positive, but as they investigate what is happening at the Rez, they become partners in more ways than one.
As always, Elle James creates a fast pace, non stop action, page turner, with likable characters and witty banter. "Your killing me Small" The only negative I have, which I have had with other of the author's books (and many other authors) is I feel that jumping into bed together the first night they meet is not healthy, and doesn't particularly add to the story.
