"They called me the Whore Queen. Some even called me the Evil Queen. But they could call me whatever they wanted. I was still queen."
Rhiandra Tiercelin hungers for power and her charm has always been her sharpest weapon in hunting it. So when a brutal attack leaves her physically scarred, desperation drives her to make a deal with Draven, a magic-wielding stranger who is inexplicably compelling and definitely dangerous. She knows she can’t trust him, but when he offers to make her a queen, the temptation is too enticing to resist.
Armed with a glamoured face and an enchanted apple, Rhiandra is determined to scheme her way into a crown, even if it means risking the deadly punishment for unsanctioned magic use. But Draven is playing a bigger game, and she is just one piece on the board.
Can she keep her wits about her long enough to uncover his secrets, or will he lure her down a path she will come to regret?
Her Dark Reflection is the first book in a new dark fantasy series perfect for fans of Raven Kennedy, Jennifer Armentrout and Sarah A. Parker. If you like cunning, ambitious heroines, morally ambiguous men and slow-burn romance that toes the line between love and hate, then you’ll love Hailey Jade’s dark reimagining of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
Trigger Warnings: this book explores dark themes and may contain content that is inappropriate or triggering for some readers, including explicit sex scenes and depictions of sexual assault. Please see author website for a full list of triggers.
Her Dark Reflection is the first book in the The Dark Reflection series. If you like dark world setting and dark romance, i would recommend this book to you.
The story starts with Rhiandra who was injured and physically scarred by the trio of mens. She couldn't work in a place with the scars in her face so she left and she tried to sell her some things made by her mother. She met a strange man with the forbidden magic and he offered her that he would give back her beauty and promised that he would make her a queen if she did what he asked for. Rhiandra accepted the bargain and the stranger named Draven gave her an enchanted apple and told to give it to the King if she wants to become a Queen.
The plot was good, the world building was different and the characters are good as well. It was sad at the beginning when Rhiandra lost her beauty to the fire and she tried to accept her fate but that's when she met Draven. She didn't trust him a bit but did everything he told her. And he reminded her of the glamour she wore when she questioned him. The story was mostly politics and court intrigue. The romance was okay but it would've been nice if we got more of Draven but he was mystery throughout the book. Ending was a bit of a cliffhanger but good one I think.
- Strangers to lovers - Slow burn - Dark fantasy romance - Dark and grumpy MC - Fierce and Strong FC - Hurt/Comfort - Physical injure - Royalty - Forbidden magic - Changed identity / Glamour - Politics intrigue - Court drama
4 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1- 🌶️
What I'm excepting in book 2 is, i want Draven POV and his hidden secrets and motives. More tension or romance between Rhiandra and Draven. Why magic is forbidden and why royalty punish magic users ?. Maybe i just need answers to all the unanswered questions in book 1.
I thank the author and Netgalley for eARC for my honest review.
Solid 4.5 stars! I absolutely loved this book! It's a great retelling of Snow White, and I love that it focuses on the "wicked" queen. The love interest was 🥵 My only complaint was that it ended in a bit of a cliffhanger, and I wish there was a tad bit more romance. I can't wait for the next one.
Written from the “villains” point of view, Her Dark Reflection follows the story of Rhiandra, a strong-willed woman who loses her means of supporting herself after being attacked. She works (somewhat unwillingly) with a handsome, dark stranger to gain back her beauty, and her life. By far one of my favorite reads this year! Rhi is assertive in her thinking, and while I don’t always agree with her methods, her initiative is fascinating. Draven, the magical stranger, is rough around the edges, and mysterious. There are a lot of open questions between the two of them by the end of the book, and a promise for some (dare I hope) steamy scenes in the future. Beautiful writing, in-depth characters, and a land in chaos made this an easy read that was hard to put down. Highly recommended for those interested in fairytale retellings and/or dark romances. Anxiously awaiting the next book! ***I received an advanced review copy and am leaving this review voluntarily***
Firstly, I am not ok with that ending! What am I supposed to do until the next book? Sigh, this happens every time I binge read a book that has me hooked from the beginning. As of late I’ve been reading a lot of fairy-tale retellings where the villains rule the day and get their HEA, so when the opportunity to read this ARC came up I knew it would be right up my alley. This book is a Snow White retelling about the Evil Queen.
Haley has managed to create a wholly unique take on the classic fairy-tale, with unique characters set in a world that I imagined to be like mid to late 19th century Europe while at the same time being a completely fictional place in time with magic, monsters, princes, and princesses. The story is gritty and dark while also maintaining that fairy-tale-esque quality. It’s also reminiscent of Grimm Fairy-tales but I’m hoping this one has a HEA.
Rhiandra aka Vixen aka the Evil Queen is a character that’s easy to have a love hate relationship with. I had major Cersei Lannister vibes from her. She’s a woman in a man’s world trying to survive, trying to conquer the world. She’s strong, self-assured, speaks her mind, and is fearless. She’s the queen on a chessboard, plotting and waiting to make her move (queen does after all take king). So it’s no surprise that at her lowest in a moment of weakness she makes a deal with the devil. Though I’m not sure she would have chosen differently under different circumstances.
Draven our MMC aka (who I like to call) the devil is everything you want in a true villain. I still haven’t figured him out and I think it may take a couple of books for that to happen. He’s dark, mysterious, and powerful with a whole lotta sex appeal. He reminded me a bit of Desmond Flynn from Laura Thalassa’s Bargainer series but more so of Luc from The Invisible Life of Addie Larue.
Rhiandra and Draven are everything I wanted from Luc and Addie in The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. What can I say, I have a weak spot for the devil! This was the Snow White retelling I’ve been waiting for and definitely needed in my life. It’s Addie Larue meets Game of Thrones while being a story unlike any other I’ve read. I can’t wait for the next book (and yes I realize this one hasn’t been officially released yet) to see where the story goes, how the characters evolve, and to just enjoy the journey that Hailey has set out for us.
This one is perfect for fans of Katee Robert and Emily McIntre.
The first 40% was very enjoyable, but it fell off and seemed to drag for the other 60%. This book was actually a lot more political than I was expecting, which I suppose I should have realized when it’s about a woman becoming queen. The romantic subplot is nice but few and far between. The love interest makes very rare appearances, and I still know very little about him which makes me not care too much about his character. A few times I actually forgot he existed. The main character, Rhiandra, was a likable character in the beginning but at some later points in the book she seemed so arrogant, pretentious, and short-tempered. I guess that makes sense since this is supposed to be a retelling of Snow White from the Queen’s perspective, but it made me dislike her character quite a bit at times. Near the end I began to dislike her even more after the second apple incident, not just because of her lack of guilt even when seeing Snow White, but also because of her arrogance and selfish attitude. Maybe if this book had been a little less political, a little more romantic, and a bit more suspenseful (running into old friends or coworkers, facing actual attempts at her life, less anticlimactic conclusions) this would have been a 4 star book, but instead I’ll rate it at 3.5. I thought half the point of her becoming queen was to get revenge on the people she once knew that harmed & shunned her, but there’s barely even any mention of them after entering the palace. So who exactly was she supposed to be getting revenge on? I still recommend this to adult fantasy lovers, but if you’re looking for romance or an actual revenge story, this one isn’t for you.
I just finished this book and wholly cow am I DESPERATE for the next instalment! Talk about a morally grey heroine, who has been through it and is making some rather intense choices (to say the least). I love complex female characters and Rhiandra is one of the best I've read in a long time!
Now what can I say about Draven? He's insanely sexy, he'll have you melting and he is even more morally grey than Rhiandra. Do we know his intentions? Nope. Am I obsessed with him? Yes.
Thank you netgalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this Arc. 🍎
The Evil Queen in the making.
I found it very easy to follow, fast baced, mildly fine world building. I got hooked from the very first page. This was definitely heavier on the political schemes and cunnings than other aspects of this world.
The Evil Queen has always been a vociously powerful character and Rhi isn't quite there yet by the end of this book.
Romance? Where? There was alot of tension and physical attraction between them, tho. And no great emotional development. We barely see the love interest. and when we do he's usually a jerk. I believe their relationship might be a slow burn throughout the rest of the series. There wasn't any emotionally significant moments for their relationship in this one. And let me tell you they do have quite the chemistry, however, he does spend the duration of the story manipulating her. I don't think he's going to stop any time soon. But I got a strong feeling once they get on the same page they'll make a powerful couple.
Her Dark Reflections was such a gripping, unforgettable read. I adored the vivid characters, how they all stumbled around in the morally grey area for the majority of the novel while also gripping the reader to want them to succeed, creating a compelling cast of characters full of colour and characterization.
The amount of worldbuilding and lore for this kind of novel was astounding and so vivid and I could barely believe it at times. Lore plays a huge part in this novel and it is so perfectly done and vibrant.
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed any book like it. I’m usually not a fan of snow white retellings but this one following the “evil queen” is so brilliantly done it was agony to have to put it down and return to real life. Hailey Jade writes some of the greatest adult fantasy that I’ve read, as well as fairy-tale retellings, imagined for a mature audience that allows you to explore more adult themes while still loving the original idea and already having an idea of the characters already.
Besides the fact that they are fairy-tale retellings I adore the fact that while you imagine you’ll know how the story ends and what certain characters will do, Hailey Jade still shocks and surprises with her cunning and sneaky twists and turns throughout. Completely throwing you from what you expected to read.
If you love to read about cunning heroines, morally ambiguous men, steamy adult dark fantasy romances, and relationships that border between love and hate, Her Dark Reflection will absolutely thrill you.

Now here is an interesting female character. I don't see a lot of villainous women in fantasy romance, and as another reviewer mentioned, Rhiandra is very much a Cersei Lannister. I'll be interested to watch how other people react to her. She makes some pretty dubious choices and can be cruel to others, but she is driven and capable and I enjoyed watching her wrap the court around her finger. You probably don't want her for your new best friend, but I can understand her actions and trying to figure out what she's going to do next is compelling. She's a classic unreliable first person narrator, so I don't know if everyone around her is as untrustworthy as they seem, or if she is just paranoid, but almost every other character is awful. Except for Draven. I don't know why I have such a thing for devilish, mysterious men, but he pushes my buttons, and the push-pull he has with Rhiandra is delicious.
This is a bit of a political read, with a bunch of characters that are a little hard to keep track of, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment, and if you've read much fantasy before then you'll know to sort of let it wash over you and just hold out for it to click into place, with some unexpected twists and turns along the way. Spice was good, though not a lot of it. Didn't see a lot of the world since the story mostly took place in the palace, so I'd like to see more in the next book. Actually, while we are making wish lists, I'm hoping for more magic, some fantasy creatures, and more Draven. But overall, this was a bloody good read. 5 stars.
I've been cautious about picking up ARCs before now, since I am pretty picky when it comes to my books, so I was surprised by how much I loved this! There were all these unexpected elements that enriched what could have been a very run-of-the-mill fantasy. The explanation behind the magic system, the friendship arc between Rhiandra and Senafae, the slow descent into (sort of) villainy.
The protagonist, Rhiandra, was my favorite thing about the book. She's strong, but not in that stabby-stabby way that I'm getting tired of reading about, and she is definitely not a Mary Sue. She's bitter, manipulative and selfish, with some moments of scathing humor that had me unexpectedly bursting out laughing. The one thing that sort of annoyed me is how vain she is, but given the whole story behind her scars and how she hides them, I'm predicting there will be some character growth that will move her away from that vanity. I'm excited to see whether she will be able to hold on to her beauty or whether she will have to learn to accept her real face. I'm also looking forward to seeing more of the dynamic between her and Gwinellyn (Snow White), this sort of weird need to protect her yet some deep resentment of her at the same time
I am intrigued by Draven and I can't decide if I'm going to love or hate him i the long run (or which the author wants me to feel). I can't get a good read on him, but I love his wit and his dark energy, and that ending makes me think we will find out a lot more about him in the next book. I like the way he and Rhiandra challenge each other and I'm thinking there might be a sort of Bonnie and Clyde pairing going forward, but I'm also wondering if there is something with Cotus?
I hope I don't have to wait too long for the next book!
A fairy-tale reimagining with a crafty and seductive heroine, who joins a stranger's intricate ploy for the thrown. As long as she becomes Queen, and can retain her false mask of beauty, Rhiandra takes the plunge into politics, royal affairs, magic, and scheming. . . From the start I was hooked! This isn't just another fairy-tale adaptation, this is a complete reimagining from the "Evil Queen's" perspective. It had a few similarities, but its unique enough to set it apart! Rhiandra is crafty, after having spent her life in the city, where she was poverished and learned to charm the opposite sex to survive. After a terrible attack leaves her disfigured, she finds herself selected by Draven, a handsomely & mysterious stranger, with a ploy for the throne. Following along her journey had me on edge! I never knew what was going to happen next. The world building is fantastic, enough detail is provided so you can picture everything, but not too tedious to make it overwhelming to remember everything. And there were sprinkles of magical creatures, romance and on edge situations, just enough to provide uniqueness and jolts of spontaneity to keep your attention. The politics were easy to follow, and the heroine often had enough inner dialog going to help explain others motives or her own, which was definitely helpful. It does end on a cliffhanger, so be prepared! Can't wait to read the next installment of the series!
*I received a free advanced review copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving a review*
UNEXPECTED 🙋🏼♀️ I have never been in the shoes of the "villain" but, is it a villain when you try to survive and keep your power? I am mesmerised by the writing of the book, every single detail is well explained, the characters are great, however I am dying to uncover more of Draven's personality. Also, Rhiandra's chatacter development is huge, I do not know what to expect of her, but I just hope that she has made the right choices. If I recommend the book? Of course I do! I expected a little romance or desire and ✅

Thank you to NetGalley and Hailey Jade for my advanced copy in exchange for my unbiased opinion.
"Her Dark Reflection" is a retelling of "Snow White" and gives us the backstory for the Evil Queen who tries to kill Snow. In Jade's story, the queen isn't evil, she's surviving. Our queen is Rhiandra Tiercelin, a woman who has fought tooth and nail for her survival in a world that isn't kind to her. After a traumatizing accident leaves her hideously scarred and unable to make a living, Rhiandra meets Draven who offers her a chance. But not without a price.
I absolutely enjoyed this one so much. Rhiandra is so whip smart and the way Jade described her, she seemed just so attractive. I loved her as a character and how frank her observations of the royals and life as essentially a prostitute were. I also loved how sexually charged and tense her scenes with Draven were but my god, he gave me the ick the minute he sexually manipulated her. And while this book is tagged as romance, I didn't really see any romance between them? It was definitely just sex and that's fine, but I think the romance tag is a bit of a mistag.
I also docked a star just because I found myself getting really annoyed with the Snow White character; similarly to how Rhiandra felt about her, I wanted to both protect Snow but also throttle her with how disgustingly privileged she was and yet, she was fine to just lay back and let things happen to her. I did love how Rhiandra was so conflicted about her feelings with Snow. It made her feel grounded and realistic especially considering her background and watching Snow just waste her opportunities. I mean, by the end and despite knowing the tale of Snow White, I was cheering for Rhiandra.
Another nitpick I had mainly had to do with the cast of supporting characters; aside from Rhiandra and Gwyn, we don't necessarily get a whole lot of depth from anybody else. I would have loved to see that same care and attention with characters like Rhiandra's maid. I also would have liked if maybe we had somehow gotten a little bit of backstory about Draven and the King. I know the King served a specific purpose but it would have been nice to get a bit more understanding about why he was the way he was with Gwyn other than the blanket explanation of him being a powerful man/patriarchy.
Other than that, I fully enjoyed this and thought Jade did a great job breathing life into an overtold story.
4.5⭐️ I loved this! I became hooked about fifteen ish percent in and then couldn't put it down after that. this is a unique take on the story of the Evil Queen and I was definitely invested in her story. I love seeing retellings from the villains POVs and this one didn't disappoint. I'm very interested in seeing where the author takes the story after that ending, and how close she's going to stick to the original story. The world building was also super cool and I hope we get a better look into the guild and what goes on behind those doors, the peak that we got had me literally leaning forward in my seat. you know that thing we do when something big is dropped and you're like woah hang on? yeah that was me bc it was just dropped and then the characters moved to the next bit and I'm sitting here like umm is nobody going to acknowledge what he just showed her?! anyways, I have a feeling that's going to be revisited in the next book bc I have a hunch that it may or may not involve Draven 👀 I'm not going to say more than that bc, 1) no spoilers, and 2) I don't like making theories and being wrong 🤣
but now that I've mentioned Draven I need to chat about him for a sec. obviously I love him, but I'm wondering why exactly he needed Rhi on the throne so badly. I mean aside from what happens in the last few chapters, but there's definitely more to his story and I *need* to know. I'm gonna jump into the next book in a bit so I'm hoping we learn what that is... and that he maybe gets a few POVs bc I'm here for that.
overall, I loved this. the story had me invested, the characters were interesting and the writing was really good. the pacing felt a little slow but not enough that it really affected my overall opinion? I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a Snow White retelling - but it's the Evil Queen's story. it sort of gave me Once Upon a Time vibes, specifically the flashbacks from the Enchanted Forest, and I'm here for that. so if you loved that show you'll probably enjoy this story :)
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Her Dark Reflection by Hailey Jade is a dark and steamy adult retelling of Snow White from the "evil" Queen's perspective. The story revolves around Rhiandra, who is brutally attacked one day while working at a tavern. She makes a deal with Draven, a handsome fae with magic. He will give her a glamour to disguise the scars on her face, and she will become the new queen. In return, she will have to obey all of his commands, including assassinating the king. Can Rhiandra go from lowly prostitute to the most powerful woman in the nation?
Here is a captivating excerpt from Chapter 1, which introduces us to the setting:
"The Winking Nymph was always flooded with patrons after the Burnings. The atmosphere wasn’t the same as it was on a busy night at a regular tavern; the dim lighting encouraged the shadows closer instead of banishing them, leaving pockets of space where patrons could lurk without being recognized. People came to drink, either alone or in groups, but for the most part they didn’t sing bawdy songs or tell dirty jokes. Perhaps the place was debauched enough on its own so they didn’t feel the need. Women drifted in and out of the shadows, flirting with the light as it caught on their spangled wrists and ankles and throats, and at the front of the room a beautiful redheaded girl sang with a voice as sweet as sun-warmed strawberries."
Overall, Her Dark Reflection is a romantic fantasy that will appeal to fans of From Blood and Ash or The Selection. One highlight of this book is how well-written it was. The prose was beautiful and as good as any traditionally published fantasy book. Another highlight of this book is the political intrigue. I loved how the author incorporated the politics of the fantasy world into this romantic fantasy. I also loved reading the origin story of a character who is traditionally depicted as a villain. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of fantasy books in general, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in June!
Basically, I subtracted a star simply because I wanted more angst and smut 😩 but I have high expectations for book 2 because this book was 😘👌
I'm just gonna list the tropes and elements instead of a wordy review because they speak for themselves:
🍎 DARK Snow White retelling 🍎 Evil Queen POV 🍎 Intricate magic system 🍎 Snow White suffers from chronic illness.. we'll just leave it at that. I found this to be such a compelling element 🍎 Fae 🍎 Slow burn romance 🍎 Reluctant allies to lovers 🍎 Did I mention EVIL? Yeah... she's morally gray but I love her 😩 🍎 One semi explicit scene 🍎 Very "high fantasy" with political rivalry and deviousness
I LOVE retellings - and I didn't see this one coming. But OH so well done. I have not seen Snow White from this perspective before but I love it. And Snow White is one of my favorite fairytales... I don't think it is an easy one or even a common one to try to retell so I was thrilled with this one. I was pleasantly surprised and will look forward to the next one! Oh, I can't wait!
TL;DR: Foreshadowing! Characters who aren't dumb and may even be Complex! Occasional sexy times that don't take over The Plot! An Actual Original Plot even though it's billed as a retelling! Look at that cover, check the trigger warnings, then read it. Read it now.
Oh my dark and sexy goddess, this was one of those wonderfully unexpected NA reads that took a fairy tale retelling, mashed it with all the things you expect of a good NA series starter and served with it with hot sauce. It has pays vague homage to the idea of the rise of the Evil Queen in Snow White, but it's far more original than your usual. Think Lunar Chronicles, only high fantasy sprinkled with folk lore and spice.
Our story starts with a girl named Rhiandra working as a courtesan, selling her time and maybe her body to the men who cross the Winking Nymph's threshold. That is until a cruel act robs her of her beauty and sees her cast out, suddenly at the mercy of the mysterious Draven and his illegal glamour magic. He makes her a deal: he'll magic her looks if she'll work for him against the royal family. All she has to do is deliver and apple to the widower king... And become queen.
Where to start? Writing skill? Check. Perfect for the older audience without being obtuse, and well narrated by the future Queen herself. Pacing? Check. It's a series starter so keeps everything simmering low and slow, careful enough with information to keep us in the loop while not overwhelming with detail. The world building? Fantasy gold. Maybe a few things could have been clearer (there's a religion involving a number of gods who get named but for a while I didn't even know they were gods, let alone what the reference to them meant; then there's the magic system that people seem to know about yet know nothing about at the same time which was... weird) but otherwise the keep it simple approach works to the story's advantage. The three pronged governance system (the church, the "druthi" magical-types, and the royals), the Burnings to purge illegal magic users, magical monsters being captured and curtailed... Yes, it's familiar stuff for fantasy readers, but it works a treat when the important thing here is the character story.
Did I mention the complex characters? Rhiandra's development is slow and subtle, filled with foreshadowing. She's utterly believable as the ambitious female without being utterly repellent; if anything that foreshadowing without actually spelling it out for us about why she's changing and doing what she does makes it all the more delicious. I love a good foreshadowed mystery that's both blindingly obvious and yet you still want to wait and see how the characters react when they put two and two together. Side characters are kept interesting even if there are a few cliched Mean Girls types about. I was fascinated by the changeable Gwindolyn a.k.a Snow White, Rhiandra's semi-BFF she brought into the palace with her. Again, both are steeped in such heavy foreshadowing and I am so ready to be proven right (or wrong) later in the series.
If you're looking for romance, back away now. There's steam and attraction, but nothing like emotional baggage. It can get graphically spicy, which isn't to my taste, but it doesn't overshadow the plot or happen just because. Plus between Rhiandra and Draven we have this strange frisson of dark spice - arguably the best kind because it's not all about gushing romance, more #itscomplicated #sobaditsgood. And once again, the foreshadowing of what's happening between them, Draven's motives and where their story is going to go... Oh, chef's kiss it's good.
We end on a good pause point, mildly cliffhanger-ish but without feeling like a cruel cut off. The story isn't anywhere near done, and I for one am so ready for part 2.
Her Dark Reflection by Hailey Jade Spice 4 Overall 4 • Dark romance lite • Impressive Worldbuilding • Ambitious and Flawed FMC • Anti-Heroine Vibes • Morally Grey Love Interest • Cliffhanger • Incomplete series. • Magic system was a tad confusing • Snow White Retelling Featuring the Evil Queen • Exploration of What Makes a True Villain • Love the Twiss • Unique Perspective Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it completely took the Snow-White narrative and gave it a slightly feminist bend while keeping you on your toes with a slightly dark romance. I loved the mid-book scenes from within the place. And the antihero/flawed perspective of FMC. However, I felt cheated out of loving the MMC due to the “mysterious nature” of his character. I’m looking forward to seeing where this story leads.
This book is a Snow White retelling but with some twists. I found this read to be very interesting as I both liking and not liking the MC throughout the book which definitely kept it interesting. Also, you very much do not know who is friend or foe throughout it. I enjoyed the magic and royalty aspects and am very intrigued to see what will happen next (as the book ended on quite the cliffhanger.)
An excellent and gripping retelling of the Evil Queen! I am not used to reading dark fantasy romance but this one got my attention and I just devoured it. The main character is quite a character, she reminds me of the audio ‘I support women’s rights, but most importantly, I support women’s wrongs.’
1. Since the book is written in the first narrative, the main character is very important to the enjoyment of the plot, and I think Rhiandra is a great one. She has a nice level of wickedness and realism, especially with her background, it’s nice to read something with the main girl having a solid autonomy. However, I think her infatuation with Draven is a little out of pocket. I believe they have no chemistry at all except that they’re both hot and that’s why she’s so smitten with him from time to time. I have a feeling that she doesn’t actually love him, and... [point 2]
2. ...so the bargain they have with one another has to be very solid for their relationship to make sense. They are the types that would drive each other mad. They literally used one another to achieve their own means. So while I think Draven poses a good deal, it depends solely on Rhi’s obsession with her beauty for her to take his deal. Other than his appearance, Draven has no use for Rhi as a love interest. If the author intends to make them two opposing forces, however, I would like that.
3. I like seeing how different roles from the original story fell into characters in this ones. I was really surprised with the role of the hunter, and that was a really nice touch.
4. Speaking of nice touch, I love the political aspect of this book, despite people not welcoming it. I think it makes this book more grown up, and not just because it has some spice in the book, no, it deals with actual governing problems. I like it a lot, but I would have loved it more if it was explained a bit beforehand, and not just when it is relevant. The same goes for their religious and magic systems.
Overall, it is a really nice book, I think I am going to request more ARC from Hailey Jade in the future. Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity to read an arc for an honest review.
Happy publication day for this wonderful story! You can find it on KU too! Thank you to NetGalley, Hailey Jade and Midnight Tide Publishing for the opportunity to read this eARC. All thoughts are my own.
If you like: Morally grey MC Spice 🌶️🌶️/5 Dark Lord (think kind of like in Addie LaRue) Magic Fairytale retellings
Then this book is for you!
This is a retelling of Snow White, but with the Evil Queen as the MC that you actually want to root for, but also want to throw out the window at times.
Rhiandra works as a badass maisera (sells beauty, and talents and sometimes her body in a tavern run by a madam) until a horrible attack leaves her face burned and unable to work.
Enter dark, hot and steamy Draven who offers her a better life if she can complete a few tasks that involve an apple and a king and a kingdom run by men.
Also the spice is nice, not too much, but the descriptive words used definitely put it in NA vs YA for me. If there's a book 2, I hope for a lot more spice! 😂
This reminded me of "The Shadows Between Us." It was a quick read but definitely left me on a cliffhanger!
Solid 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
There are some trigger warnings, so please look those up before jumping in! 🥰
Effortlessly beautiful. An exceptional read. And an enchanting storyline. What more could I ask for? I was drawn in by that captivating book cover first and the description, second. And by the time I know this is a retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, I was sold. This have to be my next ARC, I decided. But this one’s definitely a different take from your typical fairy tale though. It was so different from what I used to read. It was a dark reimagining for a reason, I gathered. One wrong choice leads to another. Rhiandra the maisera is now the queen of Brimordia.
You know what? I never thought I’ll be rooting for a villain until Rhiandra Tercelain. But it is what it is. Gotta read it yourself to know what I’m talking about, yeah?
This book seemingly promising enough to be the next big series in the market. I just hope the author keep the perfect momentum going in the next book. Ehem.. A little exploration of romance between our hero and heroin might flutter a hopeless romantic soul like myself. I’m already thrilled for what Hailey Jade have in store for Rhiandra and her mysterious Draken. This Draken character intrigued me like no other. Ugh! I’m dying to unveil his secret. And I promise you Rhiandra, you’re not alone on that matter.
Thanks to #NetGalley for my copy of #HerDarkReflection
This was a book I didn't know I needed! And excuse me, but that ending? I need book two immediately! (this is going to be long because...damn)
There was so much to this book, I don't really know where to begin. The world that Jade has built in this book is so intricate and incredible. The writing is so rich and it paints a beautiful picture. The plot is fantastic, all the scheming and machinations? Yes please!
Rhiandra was a great character, I just loved her. She has such a big transition in this book and no doubt she will continue to grow throughout the series. Her journey starts in such a dark place, it's no wonder she's a little bit selfish. No one ever looked after her except her. It's great to see a character who takes this to a darker place instead of being good and pure despite it, very refreshing!
Draven is delicious. He made far too few appearances in this book, but as much as I hate to say it, the story wouldn't work if he was there all the time. Hopefully he'll be in book 2 a lot more...I can't say why I suspect this, you have to read the book!
I'll wrap this up by saying if you like political intrigue, morally gray characters, and a fantastic fantasy plot, this book is amazing. I couldn't put it down. Go read it!
So, I’m gonna need book two now, please and thank you!
Her Dark Reflection by Hailey Jade is a fairytale retelling told from Rhiandra’s point of view. She is a strong-willed character and is definitely the villian! She’s ambitious and cunning, and she is a great lead. The rest of the cast of characters were also great. I enjoyed the character building the author was able to achieve in this book and look forward to the growth in the next.
The plot kept me hooked from the first page. The writing is intriguing and I enjoyed the world building. It is so in-depth, and I wad drawn into the world. This is why I read!
This book is deliciously dark. Sinfully dark romance, dark fantasy, dark, dark, dark! When I decided to read this one, this is what I wanted, but Her Dark Reflection blew me away! If this is your type of read, you will be disappointed if you miss out on this!!!
Can’t wait for the next!!!
Thank you to R&R Book Tours for the review copy and tour invite. All opinions are my own and unbiased.
I adore origin stories, particularly if said stories involve villains. HER DARK REFLECTION is the origin story of the Evil Queen from Snow White and how she went from your normal, average young woman to the dark (and fabulous) queen that she inevitably becomes.
A unique and interesting take on the familiar fairytale, this book manages to feel like a completely different story, all the while holding true to the elements of the original tale that we all know and love. This story is fantastically dark with plenty of danger and intrigue, and there are very few people that Rhiandra can trust. The romance was a delightful aspect. I liked Draven from the beginning, and it’s a painfully slow (and brutal!) burn romance at its best. I’m hoping the second installment brings a fair amount of steam, because I was certainly expecting in with this book.
All told, well-crafted characters in a dark and dangerous world makes this classic tale feel unique and brand-new. I loved Rhiandra and Draven, and I’ll certainly be picking up book 2 once it’s available. Many thanks to @rrbooktours and the author for gifting a copy of the book for review.
if you like dark romantic fantasy, morally grey love interests, and ambitious heroines, Her Dark Reflection by Hailey Jade is the book for you. this snow white reimagining is unique from all others, since it follows the story of the “Evil Queen”.
things you can expect from this book: 🪞political intrigue 🪞dark and mysterious love interest 🪞strong, and intelligent FMC 🪞mild spice (romance is more of a subplot) 🪞snow white reimagining
Her Dark Reflection follows Rhiandra, an ambitious and smart-willed woman, whose life changes after a brutal attack. she boldly makes a deal with a mysterious, darkly handsome stranger to achieve her dreams of a better life. Rhiandra’s intellect and cunning shown throughout the novel is genius. this impacted my enjoyment of the book greatly and it makes Rhiandra’s character ever more compelling and admirable.
one of the only problems i have with the book is that some of the characters’ relationships felt underdeveloped at times. her friendship with Senafae seemed short lived and it became disappointing later in the novel. there was a similar situation with the love interest but i think the romance was intended to be more of a subplot, so we could focus on Rhiandra’s journey.
i am so excited for the next book and i 100% recommend reading this book!!
⋆⁺₊⋆ a huge thank you to Hailey Jade and Xpresso Book Tours with giving me this eARC ⋆⁺₊⋆
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book!
I need the second book to this series…like NOW! I think this is a really good retelling of Snow White “Evil Queen”. She didn’t start out as a villain, she was just a woman trying to get by, that had something terrible happen to her and then a chance for a way out. Whether or not the way out offered to her was right or wrong, I’ll let other reads decide that.
I absolutely LOVE Disney retelling stories but I really loved this one because it was a villain retelling instead of the normal princess retelling. If you like Disney and retellings; I highly recommend you read this book.
Also, can the next book hurry up and come out as well lol 🤣
Her Dark Reflection by Hailey Jade is an intriguing new twist on Snow White and gives a new background story to the wicked stepmother. We follow along Rhiandra's rise in the kingdom and find out who is truly pulling the strings along the way.
I found myself enjoying this retelling immensely, despite a few qualms that came up by the end of the book. The main one being I wish that other characters and their relationship with Rhiandra had been fleshed out better! Her only female friendship seemed shallow and short-lived. I have no idea why Senefae lasted in the book as long as she did. Their connection didn't seem that strong or well developed to justify Rhiandra's care for her. Similarly, her attraction to Draven didn't make sense. Perhaps something magical was influencing that, but it's clearly manipulative, and I'm very curious what Draven's backstory is. He would flit in and out throughout the book to help propel the next part of the plot, with no meaningful connection to Rhiandra herself, so I felt a bit misled about this being a romance.
However, this book is very well written, and I found myself invested in watching the "evil" queen begin her ascent to the top. I'm very interested in finding out how the rest of this series will go!
