Ahmed Zewail is the Linus Pauling Chair professor of chemistry and physics, and director of the Center for Physical Biology at Caltech. He is the sole recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize for the development of the field of Femtochemistry. In the post-Nobel era, he developed 4D Electron Microscopy for the direct visualization of matter in space and time. Dr. Zewail’s other honors include fifty Honorary Degrees, Orders of Merits, Postage Stamps and more than hundred international awards. He has published some 600 articles and 14 books and is known for his effective public lectures and writings, not only on science but also in global affairs. For his leadership role in these world affairs, he received, among others, the “Top American Leaders Award” from The Washington Post and Harvard University. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him to the Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and in the same year he was named the first U.S. Science Envoy to the Middle East. Subsequently, the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon invited Dr. Zewail to join the UN Scientific Advisory Board. In Egypt, he serves in the Council of Advisors to the President. Following the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the government established “Zewail City of Science and Technology” as the national project for scientific renaissance, and Dr. Zewail became its first Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

كتاب متواضع، و ملئ بالتضاربات!
بيقول ان مصر فى الستينات كانت كويسة و البحث العلمى، اللى هو خلال كام سنة هنلبس فى الحيطة و هزيمة عسكرية هى الاسوأ فى تاريخنا!
يقول مبارك كويس و مصر ممكن تتقدم فى عهده، خلال كام سنة ثورة هتقوم و تخلع مبارك! و هو ذات نفسه هيشارك فى الثورة دى!!!!
طب لما مصر كويسة ليه سافرت؟ و ليه مارجعتش! دا كان فى جامعة بأسمك وسمعتك معاك و انت فضلت تفضل مكانك!
يا مصر مش كويسة زى ما انت ما بتقول، يا انت بتزايد و بتبيع الوهم و عايش بره!
كام مرة يجيب سيرة الصهاينة و انهم متقدمين! ياخى استلمت منهم جايزة وولف و قلت ان العلم عالمى و مش بيعترف بالحدود، دى يبقى اسمها بجاحة، بس تنافقهم بالشكل دا! دا هوكينج كان مقاطعهم علميا و هو مشهور اكتر منك و لا بينه و بينهم تار و دم!
علميا لا غبار على شغله، بس سياسياً، الراجل ما بيفهمش ببصلة دا غير انه مطبع مع الصهاينة!
ربنا يرحمه.

منذ أكثر خمس سنوات كنت قرأت السيرة الذاتية الصادرة عن دار الشروق المعنونة ب ( عصر العلم ) للعالم أحمد زويل ، كانت قر أثرت في تأثير جيد لدرجة أني جعلت من زميل لي يشتري لي ذلك الكتاب من معرض الكتاب حسن كنت غير قادراً على الذهاب إليه وقتها لأستكمال الجرعة من مذكرات هذا الشخص ، المفترض أن هذا الكتاب نسخة مترجمة عن نسخة انجليزية و هما ما جعلني أتوقع أنها ستكون نسخة أكثر ميلاً للوصف و عرضا للتفاصيل و سيجعلها مذكرات عالمية موجهه للمواطن في أي دولة غير مصر و قد كان .
السيرة بها العديد من التفاصيل التي أتذكرها بنفس الأسلوب و الوصف و الأحداث من الكتاب الآخر و لكن هنا جاءت أكثر في التفاصيل التي قد لا يعرفها اي شخص خارج مصر ، كما انها جاءت أكثر انظيما و عرضا لوجهة نظر زويل و إيضاحا لثقافته و قراءاته المتنوعة .
يحكي بها زويل بلا حرج عن ضعف لغته الإنجليزية حين وفد لأول مرة لأمريكا ، يحكي عن الصدمة الحضارية في نفسه و كيف انه مرة رأي طالب عاري يركض نحوه ف ردهات الجامعة ليلا و كيف يقومون بتقبيل بعضهم البعض بلا حرج في أي وقت و عن سلوك بعض الطلاب الغريب ، يحكي عن كيف كان يغلق درج مكتبه بالقفل في مصر حين كان معيدا و انه اعتاد ان يفعل ذلك حتى في أمريكا حتى وجد ان ذلك بلا فائدة ، و يحكي بكل أدب و صدق كيف كان الإختلاف بينه و بين زوجته الأولى و كيف انتهى الأمر بينهما بشكل ودي بلا صخب ، يحكي عن والدته السيدة ( روحية ) التى قد قضي أكثر من احدى عشر عاماً منذ سافر حتى رآها أول مرة ، يحكي عن زوجته الثانية السيدة ( ديمة الفحام ) و ظروف لقاءها الغير متوقعة ، يحكي عن ولده نبيل و كيف قاله له بلهو الطفل بعد حصوله على نوبل " أنت دجاجة غير ذكية " 😂 ، يحكي عن السبق الذي كان لحضارته الأم العربية و الإسلامية و الفرعونية و كيف أثرت في التراث الإنساني ، ثم يتوسع و يتحدث عن الحضارة البشرية عموما ، يتحدث عن وجهة نظره و رؤيته للعالم و لمصر و أمريكا وطنيه .
رحلة اتسمت بالصدق - و لم يكن بها نفس القدر من الجراءة - و إن كانت نموذجيه كأنها( كتاب الوزارة ) بسمته و بعض ألفاظه و ملله أحيانا- خصوصا في الجزء العلمي - ، و لكن كان من الممتع أن تتجول في حياة شخص كزويل و تتعلم منها .
بالتأكيد كنت أتوق لسماع و معرفة رأيه في المتغيرات التي حدثت بعد كتابة هذا الكتاب عام ٢٠٠٦ من الثورة و مرضه و انشاء جامعته فعلا و المشكلات التي لاحقتها و مستقبلها ، كل ذلك كنت منتظر أن اعرف رأيه فيه و لكن وافته المنيه قبل أن يدونه .
رحم الله العالم أحمد زويل ، و ألهمنا يا رب من سيرته ما ينفعنا .

Such an inspiration!
Dr. Zewail detailed in this book his early life in Egypt -home, school and university- and then moved on to document his studies and adventures in the United States. He tried and succeeded in making raw scientific material a dramatic, exciting story.
In the end, he takes to the jubilation of the accolades and recognitions he received leading up to the Nobel Prize. You could feel his enthusiasm during the festivities and the ceremony in Stockholm in 1999, how proud he was to be the first Egyptian to achieve such honor. He was careful to conclude his book with a tribute to his own country and offer solutions to its longstanding problems.

The late Dr. Zewail has been my role model my whole life. His achievements inspired me to always strive to be better. He made me feel it is possible for me to become a scientist one day. Reading his own autobiography after all those years of admiration from afar made me decide to pursue my goal and enroll in a M.S program the next semester. That’s enough, I guess, evidence of the success of this book and its great author.

كنت ابحث عن ذاك الكتاب لشهور عديدة لدرجة انني احتجت لوسيط كي يصلني بمن يملكه وحينما سنحت لي الفرصة بأن اقتنيه حتى وإن كان غلافه مهترء و صفحاته ممزقة، الا ان ما يحتويه هو كنز لا يمكن للسنين ان تتلفه، الخبرات والمغامرات اثناء رحلة قدوة الطفولة كانت ممتعة ملهمة مخيفة ومحمسة

Antara tugasan subjek 'Engineer and Society' kelas Dr Iqbal adalah membentangkan seorang tokoh sains. Ini tugasan berpasangan. Maka telah berpasangan aku dan Mimi. Pada mulanya kami berbelah bahagi aku berminat untuk memaparkan pada kelas nama Ken Yeang. Gagasan mulia bangunan yang harus berharmoni dengan persekitaran (green building) amat memikat untuk dibentangkan.
Namun akhirnya nama Zewail prevailed. Zewail lebih mesra dengan kursus yang aku ambil iaitu kejurutreaan kimia. Penemuan femtokimia nya tidak kurang hebat menarik. Antara buku yang dibaca di perpustakaan UMP, buku ini dijadikan modal untuk tugasan tersebut. Di antara Einstein, Edison, Ibnu Sina dan nama-nama lazim lain- presentasi Ahmad Zewail adalah yang paling menyegarkan tatkala itu (separuh riak). Dr Iqbal mengulas panjang mengenai Ahmad Zewail. Aah alam universiti adalah nostalgia sekali!
Buku yang wajib dibaca. Sebuah biografi dari pandangan Ahmad Zewail sendiri. Perkongsian yang begitu berharga dan begitu menuntut bacaan khalayak.

Ahmed Zewail narrates his story from growing in a small town in Egypt until reaching the pinnacle of the scientific world. It is a sad reality that such a great mind wouldn't have tasted similar level of success had he remained in Egypt. In a plain and simple language Zewail explains the development of his scientific work that led to his recognition as a Nobel laureate.
