Someone’s waiting for Eli. Somebody’s watching his every move...

Eli is used to looking after himself. Single for longer than he’d care to admit, he doesn’t need a man for more than a hookup, not when he’s got his loyal dog, Zeus, by his side.

But one night changes the course of his life. He meets Dominic, an actual copper and not the stripper he thought his best friend had hired for his birthday. A copper that has relationship written all over him and Eli set in his sights.

After his night out celebrating, another gift awaits him at home—but not a pleasant one. His birthday may be over, but the threats keep coming. Keep escalating. Keep hurting those close to him. Just how far will the monster behind them go? And how much will Eli lose before he can stop them?

Beth Laycock’s books are influenced by her time living overseas as well as the gritty, urban landscape of the north of England where she grew up.

She has been reading romance since she was old enough to tell herself that line every book lover does—just one more chapter.

As a teenager she attempted to write her first novel, and many more since then that are still gathering dust on her bookshelf. It wasn’t until she discovered the M/M genre that her muse showed up and refused to quit telling her stories about beautiful men finding love together. She hasn’t stopped scribbling them down since. Beth’s muse usually shows up when she is in the shower, is allergic to cleaning, rarely lets Beth watch TV, and insists she drinks copious amounts of coffee so she can turn caffeine into words.

Beth’s books range from sweet to sexy, long to short, contemporary to paranormal, but a HEA is always guaranteed.

This is my first time reading this author, and I liked her writing style. Major part of the book was dedicated to domestic animals, namely dogs, and despite me not being much of a dog person, Ms Laycock's light-hearted manner of speaking made me like and love each and every one of Muddy Paws rescue shelter inhabitants and all those who cared for them. This is a well-paced, mildly steamy romance full of doggy kisses, one prickly dog person and a copper whose smile is hard to resist.

Eli is a young man who does not want attachments or complications in his life. No on ever stays or wants him for long, not even his own father, so he is always the one to leave. All he wants is to learn a degree in business and one day operate his own dog rescue home. With his best friend Zeus, who is unsurprisingly a dog, because Eli seems to relate better to them since they don't judge him, he quietly lives his life. With a couple of friends his family is complete. But a chance assumption starts a friendship that will grow into something more if he lets it. Eli is a bit antisocial and skeptic but when he is with dogs at Muddy Paws shelter, he is so gentle and personable. He has such a kind heart that he hides behind slight surliness and blue streaked hair. All he needed was to see that the right person will stay and be there for him. And Dominic fits the bill.

Dominic comes from a large happy family. He as his father before him became a cop. He is truly genuine person willing to go out of his way to help others. When he is mistaken for a stripper, he takes it light-heartedly and strikes up a conversation with Eli. It would have ended with a night together if not for strange things happening around Eli. Protectiveness and attraction to Eli make Dominic stick close. And while good looks help, that is not what makes Eli love him - his kindness to others is what breaks the ice around Eli's heart and makes him believe that love is possible for him.

The mystery itself was not as prominent as I expected and had a slightly slower pace. Since the story is told from Eli's POV, most of police work is done out of sight of the narrative. I wished a little more of it and a tad less of dogs. The villain's angle was fine but it would have made the mystery better for me without it. The book ended very nicely with everyone achieving what they wanted. There were tragedies that made me so sad but author managed to finish on a happy note. I recommend it. Mad About the Boy was an immensely enjoyable book. One thing I am most intrigued by is Laycock’s choice of what I suppose is character design. Eli himself says his look is “more emo than boy next door” with blue streaks in his bangs and a lip ring. This felt like something of a juxtaposition for a character who enjoys his work as a waiter in a little cafe in Manchester, England, volunteers at a nearby animal rescue, and dreams about having a dog rescue of his own some day. Not only was this a chance for me to call out my own assumptions about someone’s grooming, but it comes up in the plot as well. In contrast to Eli’s gig-economy work and the freedom he has over his appearance, Dominic has a steady job with the police and definitely seemed like a clean-cut, heartthrob-in-a-romance novel type of guy: attractive, well-to-do, and kind to a fault. At times, Eli is hyper aware of the physical manifestations of their differences, commenting about how he doesn’t know what someone like Dominic would see in a guy like Eli beyond a one night stand. Later, after they’ve begun seeing one another, Eli again feels self conscious when he realizes Dominic’s family is both huge and well-to-do…quite different from Eli, who was raised by a single mother on the “wrong side” of the tracks.

Dialogue, Ms Laycock—it's a thing. Page after page of the PoV MC relating his thoughts is, quite frankly, boring. The stalker plot was thin and the romance thinner. Characters flit by who play no part in the plot (I'm looking at you, creepy man in the restaurant dubbed "Mr-touches-himself-inappropriately-while-he-eats").

The writing was functional and there were no proof-reading errors I noticed.

(Are my standards fallen so low that that's now a 2-star grade?)

It was a moderately good suspense plot although the writing overall didn’t really resonate, nor did the couple. Worst of all, and sorry (not sorry) for the spoiler but there was no good reason in the plot to have dogs and puppies brutally killed. Golden rule, never kill off the animals! Probably will never read this author again.

Mad About The Boy
By Beth Laycock

When Eli meets Dominic while out celebrating his birthday with friends, he thinks the man might be out of his league. After all, Dominic is a Police Detective while Eli works at a restaurant and volunteers his free time at a local dog rescue. Dominic is different than what Eli thought he'd be. He's sweet and protective on top of being gorgeous. When Eli aquires a stalker Dominic watches out for him making sure Eli knows he's not facing it alone.

A good story full of mystery, romance, danger, and a stalker. I really liked both Eli and Dominic.

The best birthday presents aren't always the ones you ask for and they don't come all wrapped with a pretty bow...

Eli's just an average guy who's trying to get his life together. He works as a waiter and spends as much of his free time as he can with his dog Zeus, volunteering at 'Muddy Paws' a local dog shelter and with what little time he's got left over he plans on going back to school with the hopes of one day running his own dog shelter...just an average guy who's about to go out with some friends for his birthday.

Dominic's a cop who's day hasn't gone well and he's just wanting to have a few drinks and forget about things for a while...well, everything except the cute guy at the bar who's celebrating his birthday. But Dominic's not the only one who's watching the birthday boy...he's just the only one who may be able to keep him safe.

'Mad About the Boy' is only the second story by this author that I've read but it's also the second story that I've really enjoyed...so far, so good. This one was definitely what I would call a romantic thriller. It seems that it's not just Dominic who finds Eli to be attractive and as these two men try to get to know each other not only are they being watched but things that are both unusual and frightening begin to happen.

When it comes to relationships Eli and Dominic are polar opposites...Eli is commitment phobic and tends to run when things begin to go from 'casual' to 'relationship possible', while Dominic is more decisive and not afraid to go after what he wants and express how he feels. It felt like this difference was partially due to the age gave between these two men but it was also partially due to their life experiences.

I was definitely impressed with how the mystery/thriller part of the story played out because it wasn't until the person was revealed that I knew who it was...I had my suspicions more than a couple of times. I just wasn't ever right.

The only thing that didn't quite work for me was that at times there was just too much focus on the dog shelter but at the same time I don't think it would have worked if this had been pushed to far to the background since 'Muddy Paws' was a really important part of Eli's life and had been for a number of years so while a little less focus on it might have been nice, at times it truly was an important part of Eli's story. Also in regards to the dogs...just a heads up for all of my animal loving friends there are a couple of scenes that involve violent acts perpetrated against dogs while the actual act doesn't transpire on page the results are clearly evident.

One of the things that I've encountered in this book that worked really well from my point of view was the fact that we were told parts of the story from the villain's perspective... not a lot but enough to really bring him into the story.

There's a couple of interesting characters in this story besides Eli and Dominic that I'd like to see more of...I liked Dom's friend and fellow police officer Theo. Most of what we saw of this character was on a professional level but still I think there's potential for more with him as well as Dom's brother Keiran...we're given really strong potential for more about Keiran at the end of this story...as in I for one want to know what kind of trouble Keiran's gotten himself into. So while this book seems to be a standalone story it's left room for Ms Laycock to give us more about this group of Brits.

This is a gripping, suspenseful story with a slow-burn romance between Eli and Dominic. They are each other opposites in many ways, but they fit perfectly together. That becomes all the more apparent when mysterious incidents happen, aimed at Eli.
The author has an engaging writing style and builds up the tension rather nicely. The setting is around a dog rescue center, the passion of Eli’s life, including the difficult demands of maintaining such a shelter. Even though the story is mostly told from Eli’s POV, I got a fair amount of what Dominic’s character. In between, we read snippets of someone else, and only towards the end of the book, we get more insight who they are, and the snippets become paragraphs. As that person is only mentioned once, I had to rack my brain who they were. So even though the reason for their involvement is clear and, from their point of view, understandable, the fact that Eli had hardly to no interaction with them didn’t make it an “aha” moment. Nevertheless the events were full of tension, increasing in intensity to downright cruelty, which I found difficult to read. In the front of the book, a trigger warning is mentioned.
I liked Eli and Dominic as individuals, but even more so together. They were supportive of each other, with a few minor hiccups born out of insecurity, but the chemistry between them was palpable.
The supporting characters are well balanced with the MCs, with Zeus, Eli’s rescue dog, playing a stellar role.
The story had a few instances that could have improved with a little more fleshing out or background. For instance, Dominic’s sadness, with which the story begins, is not explained. Also Dominic’s brother raises some questions that aren’t answered.

Mad About The Boy is a contemporary romance stalker story. Eli has things he wants to do with his life, like setting up a dog's boarding home and rescue kennels. He is working to do so, but strange things start happening to him. Luckily for him, he has his friends and Dominic there to help him.

I will be honest here, at points in the story, it is Dominic who comes across as a bit stalkerish. He was intense. However, it all worked out well in the end. As for the other characters, they are all very good. They do what they are supposed to, and that is to support the main character or move the story along.

There were a few loose ends that weren't tied up, not to me at least. I did enjoy this book and am very glad I've read it. I was wavering between 3 and 4 stars, and have gone with 3 simply because of those loose ends. Perhaps it's just me not seeing them. I definitely recommend this book, because then you can see what I mean, and tell me where I couldn't find them!

I was in the mood for a MM cop story for some reason and this satisfied it perfectly (bonus for being satisfyingly British as well). I had some issues with actions the characters took (mainly how unconcerned and blasé Eli was about his pervy customer at the restaurant). Cute dogs (the main one Zeus is a grey and white Staffordshire terrier). There's a warning in the intro that there is violence against animals in the book. There definitely was and more than I expected, so heed that warning.

Quotes:
The funny thing about people was when they saw that strong jaw they always assumed he was fierce, but in truth, he was a total pussycat, more so with me than anyone else. Staffies had a bad rep for being fighting dogs, but they learned the behaviour from humans.

A lot of people thought I was wasting my time at Muddy Paws, that the dogs would be better off being put down. Sometimes I thought the world would be better off putting some humans down instead.

3.5* rounded up.

Eli is a waiter who volunteers for a small dog rescue and his dream is to run a rescue/boarding kennel for dogs. The night of his birthday his friend (I HATE the pushy smirky best female friend trope) he meets a cop at the bar who walks him home and find someone graffitied the house he lives in with 3 other people (apartments).

The next day the cop Dominic shows up again and freaks Eli out by suggesting he may have a stalker. He had also received anonymous flowers for his birthday.

Before long Dominic is helping out at the kennel and then... Elil's house is set on fire. The relationship is ramping up and he ends up meeting Dominic's family which freaks him out. Now it's serious and another cop Theo takes over the case, the stalker also takes to attacking the kennel (yes, sadness happens) and the city wants to close them down because aren't up to code.

A lot is happening here but I did enjoy it. There is a lot going on however I wasn't sure how they determined so quickly that the stalker was after Eli given that three people lived in the house and the attack was never directly against him (until the kennel). It could have been targeting the female friend or the male tenant. A bit of a leap but ... And as I said, I didn't like the female friend. Also there was a LOT of ruminating by Eli about his absent father (he took off when his mom got pregnant) and he's been dreaming and missing having a father for 25 years, he often thinks about it and then... it just kind of vanished. Never to be brought up again.

Is it common in the UK to call the police coppers? Maybe it is. That always makes me think of Bugsy Malone "You'll never take me alive, coppers." Now in North American they are just cops. So every time the coppers were referred to it kind of make me pause. But that's a me issue. Just curious.

More about me, I was more or less an only child and I grew up in a bit of a crazy family though, lots of cousins and others around and I really don't get the onlies who wish they had lots of brothers and sisters. Those crazy big families who are picking at each other (in this case they are all in their 20's) gives me super anxiety. I don't find it cute, attractive or something to aim for. Again, a me thing so I never get the only longing for a huge raucous family. That's my nightmare.

The Romance I liked, the killings nope

It was going good even though slow until the bad guy went and killed dogs, puppies too, I won't give full stars to anyone who hurts animals in their books that was not needed at all.

Eli is being stalked. Words written on his building, flowers delivered, arson, and worst of all animals killed because of this. He had met Dominic who's a cop on night of his birthday and they started seeing each other which someone isn't happy about at all.

Dominic is doing all he can and so is his cop friend Theo. Things finally came to a head one night and Eli's dog Zeus saves him and Dominic also.

There is an animal rescue in here as well which I did enjoy and the relationship as it unfolded but the rest wasn't really into. I won't be reading it again. I was happy that things worked out and Eli got one thing of is dreams besides Dominic.

A side note the title and picture on cover are different on my Kindle it was called Obsession there. And dark cover instead this one which I love this cover but not the title lol.

Triggers Included in this book.
♥️♥️♥️A first read for the author with this book.
Right off this got me glued to the book with a mystery bunch of flowers. includes mental issues, stalker, cute puppies and a rescue centre, a hot hot chemistry and more. I loved Dominics family in this. Eli situation escalates which puts Doms protective instincts at work. This is a roller coaster for emotions, some scenes are not easy to read especially if your a animal lover. Brilliantly written with with Eli and the bad man's pov. all the ends of the story where sown up nicely. I'll be looking for more from this author. Highly recommend

Oh My Goodness, I loved this story so much! Eli and Dominic were so gorgeous together, Dominic being an absolute sweetheart while Eli was more hesitant and cautious, but Dom was gently persistent. The horrific events that unfold around them had me on the edge of my seat, being a dog lover and owner it was hard to read the cruelty but it was briefly described and gently dealt with. A beautifully written story, my first with this author and I’m hoping not my last as the book seemed to end with a mild cliffhanger, hopefully anyway. Some triggers here, animal abuse and torture, death threats, mental illness, and stalking.

Mostly first person pov from Eli's perspective, with the occasional glimpse into the "bad guy's" mind.
Eli meets Dominic while out with friends, celebrating his birthday. At first, Eli mistakes Dominic for a stripper, as Dominic is still in his cop uniform.
Thrilling story of a man obsessed with Eli & the craziness they endure while trying to identify the offender.
Warning: violence towards animals, arson, and other acts may be disturbing to more sensitive readers but are not gratuitous in nature.
Setting: England
UK English terminology is light enough that even the most basic US reader can follow along without a translator.

Dog rescue in Manchester

Told primarily from the voice/thoughts of Eli, this heartwarming novel tracks him as he find a forever relationship. A waiter and part-time volunteer at Muddy Paws, Eli encounters Dom at a bar. "Copper" Dominic gets involved as a series of vandalism occur. Laycock's plot intertwines several storyline but Eli and his dog Zeus with Dom end smiling. However the last paragraphs of the epilog do read as a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed this book a lot and it was my first read by this author. For an MM romance It had that extra excitement of trying to find out who was stalking and threatening one of the MC’s, a young man trying to get a fresh start at College as well as volunteering at a Dog Rescue Kennels. I had suspected two characters, and it wasn’t until very near the end that I found out I’m no Miss Marples and got it all wrong.

I’d definitely read more of this author, Beth Laycock again.

This book was more like two stories wrapped up in one big pretty bow but not everything that happened in this book was pretty. There is some terrifying situations that involve stalking, murder of animals, attempted murder, and an all around crazy individual. So those are your warnings for this book. If you can overlook the murder of animals then this book is an extremely good read with a lot of suspense.

Eli is content with his life. He has a fairly decent job at a restaurant. He volunteers at a place he loves and one day hopes to own, Muddy Paws, a animal shelter, and he has great friends. He for the most part is content with his life even though his friends believe he needs a man in his life. Eli is not convinced that is so.

On the night of his birthday he heads out to celebrate with Shannon and her boyfriend also another friend named Tom. Eli is not big on birthday celebrations but he knew that Shannon would not have it any other way. While at the bar, a man walks in and at first Eli believes his friend hired a stripper dressed as a copper for his birthday but it turns out that Dominic is truly a copper and not a stripper.

After Eli and Dominic get to talking and getting to know one another a little better Dominic decides to walk Eli home. Turns out this is a good thing because someone decided to leave Eli a not so nice message on his front door. Because of this instance, Dominic and Eli start to grow closer as more things start to occur. The more things happen the more it becomes obvious that someone is out for Eli. But the question is who?

While all this is happening the second story is also the story of how Eli wants to take his volunteer work and make it his permanent job. There is many obstacles standing in his way but if he plays his cards right he may be able to pull it off. But it is going to take some really bad and good twists and turns for that to happen. All Eli and Dominic can both do is hang on for the ride and hope that whoever it is that is stalking Eli is caught soon before someone is hurt.

I really enjoyed his book. It is quite the adventurous read that is for sure. It is hard to figure out who is behind everything happening to Eli but once all is revealed, it not only upsets you but also makes you a little sad as well. This is definitely a good read. I enjoyed all the suspense Nd the danger.

3,5 heart review by Cindy

Eli is a sweetheart who’s decided that romance isn’t for him. He has his loyal pup and his friends and a plan for the future, what more could he want?

Dominic falls for Eli quickly, drawn in by his sweet nature and dedication to helping animals in need. When it looks like Eli is in danger, he doesn’t hesitate to step up and help.

I liked this story. It’s sweet in parts and the author does a good job of showing Eli’s struggle with himself, and how he’s trying to let go of past hurts to move on with his life.

The storyline is pretty basic and there were no real surprises there. I didn’t get swept away by the story, but I did read it eager to the end because even though I knew how it would end, I was enjoying the ride anyway.

I wasn’t sure if I liked Eli’s friends or not, but his mom was sweet and Dominic’s family made me laugh, because I could totally see the family dynamics at work there and boy is that familiar.

If animals being hurt is a trigger for you, then this story might bother you a bit, but all the actual violence takes place “off page” and as the reader we are only left to deal with the aftermath.

The author sets a good pace in this story and I liked that it didn’t get bogged down in too much detail or side trips that can sometimes happen in a thriller. Building anticipation is one thing, but too much dragging your feet just makes a reader impatient and not in a good way.

The chemistry between the main characters was great and the sex was steamy without being overwhelming. I like it when the characters actually talk to each other to work things out instead of trying to fix everything in bed.

All in all, the story is enjoyable. It’s not spectacular, as I said, it’s a little predictable, but if you like a “who-dun-it” with a side of sweet men and adorable animals, then this book will be for you.

Mad About the Boy, by Beth Laycock, is a riveting stalker story combined with a sweet romance.

Starting with a surprise gift from an unknown sender, this story starts off with a creepy feel. In a great meet cute moment, Eli mistakes Dominic for a stripper. This is perfectly adorable and endearing, starting off the fun. And in a typical, yet fun, book moment, Eli he runs into Dominic again, as Dominic is the cop sent to work his stalker case.

The stalker element is written in an excellent manner, as the author includes the stalker's point of view. To me, this totally ups the creepy factor. I wish more stalker stories added this aspect. And as for the mystery, it's riveting without being the sole point of the story. In between all the scary moments, the author spends plenty of time developing Eli and Dominic's relationship. In fact, at some points, I found myself questioning myself "What about the stalker?" Love this!

A large part of the story revolves around shelter dogs and the plight to keep the shelter running. If you like dogs, you'll definitely enjoy this. As for a trigger warning, take heed that some animals are murdered. Avoid if this is a NO for you.

The author's writing is fantastic, with wonderful characters, a good pace, and plenty of suspense as well as romance. I look forward to seeing what she writes in the future.

Overall, Mad About the Boy is a great read for anyone looking for a stalker read. It totally reminds me of a fun little suspense movie.

Fast-paced, riveting and sweet! A gripping romantic suspense story!!

I loved Eli and found his sass and quirkiness matched perfectly in the hot, 'boy-next-door' style of, cop-not-stripper, Domanic. After a somewhat embarrassing first meeting and slightly mistaken identity, Eli and Domonic connect and sparks fly. They start a tentative friendship that is entwined with a dangerous stalker who has their sights set on Eli.

The suspenseful stalker elements of this story are done so well! A few of the chapters are written from the stalker's point of view and this just adds to the creepiness. As the stalker escalates; Eli and all who surround him are in more danger than ever. Eli volunteers at a dog rescue center called Muddy Paws and the poor dogs get caught up in the stalkers plan to get Eli's attention.

So much happens in this story and it's so well written and fast-paced I couldn't put it down. With the danger and suspense balanced perfectly with heart and love, this story is sure to keep you riveted until the end. I loved Eli and Dom and look forward to more of them and their made-family, hopefully in the next story about Kierran ;)

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This was a very good and emotional story. Eli is great person and I loved seeing his dreams come true. Dominic is absolutely perfect for him because Eli needed someone who wasn’t going to run away when he got scared.

Eli is such I sweetheart and I hated seeing him struggle with someone stalking him and then what happened to the dogs, it was heartbreaking. Dominic latched onto Eli quickly but it was perfect for the two of them and I loved how Dominic wasn’t going to let Eli go too easily no matter what.

I loved getting to know these characters and the others in the story. I was glad that even with the issues at the dog rescue they were able to find a way to keep it around and for Eli to live his dream and Dominic will be right by his side while he’s doing it. Now Eli’s stalker, it was pretty much a surprise though I was starting to suspect near the end based on the stalker’s point of view but man the Eli have a few creepy guys around or those that made you second guess their intentions, I think that was on purpose to make the reader suspect different people but it just made me feel bad for Eli having to deal with it.

The cover art by free to be Creative Co is nice, I love the visual of Eli and Zeus and then the creepy stalker in the background.

I really, really enjoyed this read. It moved at a good pace and had plenty going on to keep me engaged, but it wasn't OTT. Highly recommended!

Eli is on his own, living on the 3rd floor of a shared complex. His dog, Zeus, is his loyal companion when he's not working as a waiter or donating his time to Muddy Paws, a shelter for dogs.

On his birthday, he meets Dominic, a copper who sees something in Eli that he likes.

When mysterious things start happening to Eli, Dominic gets his hackles up. As the threats against Eli escalate, it's apparent he's in danger and Dominic might be the only one who can save him.

I loved Beth Laycock's writing style. It was so easy to read, easy to get into the story and bury myself there until the end. Both Eli and Dominic were the kind of characters that you'd want to have as friends in real life. I loved how deep Eli's feelings ran and how easily Dominic could read them.

This had great flow, great characters, lots of mystery and romance. Loved it.
