Abe Jefferson, a young black man, drifts into Pigeon Ford, Texas, and Sheriff Clayton Carter is faced with a dilemma. Jefferson is the subject of a recent wanted poster requesting the return of the ex-slave to his former owner. The sheriff is hesitant to comply with the poster. But things get complicated when the owner and his hired bounty hunter show up to return Jefferson to Sea Island Georgia. Meanwhile, Pigeon Ford is in the midst of holding elections for mayor and other town officials. The campaigning reveals latent prejudices that have the potential to tear the town apart. Following the elections rumors spread that Clayton's election to sheriff was stolen.
I don't have a label for western novels but given the few I read, I don't think I need to create one. This was a sequel to No Turning Back, although it can be read without having to read the first. Themes of racism and dirty politics are fairly central here, and somewhat disturbingly current. A good read.
