Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I remember. I was published in poetry long before I caught the romance writing bug.

I always meant to write a book; I really did. But I was born in a horse-centered, fox-hunting part of Pennsylvania and put on a horse so young it’s a wonder I ever learned to walk. My early years were completely taken up with horses. When one of them knocked me unconscious for a rather long time, I began to have different thoughts.

Thus began an 18-year career in various aspects of psychiatric social services. And did I mention I married a man with five children? I wrote poetry because it didn’t take as long as writing 100,000 words. All of it was published and that helped silence the little voice going, “But I really want to write a book!” When I was widowed at age 41, I dealt with it by running away to Ireland, where the little voice kept getting louder.

The result was an outburst of writing. This comes after massive amounts of help from Romance Writers of America, Valley Forge Romance Writers, Celtic Hearts and Rome-antics.

Let’s hear it for all those great ladies!

Presently, I live on a small farm in Elverson, Pennsylvania with an assortment of rescue animals …mostly horses.

There is nothing I didn’t enjoy about this book. The author did a wonderful job engaging the senses and putting the reader right in the middle of the setting. I could hear the sounds of the battles, see the throngs of people as the characters rode through the city, feel the passion of the characters involved.

And, speaking of the characters, they were well-rounded – human beings with both positive and negative characteristics. No paper doll heros and heroines here. Ms. Newman shares them so you know what you are getting. I loved the character arc of both the main characters- to see how they grew from the beginning of the book to the end was a fun journey to be on.

I certainly hope this is not the last we’ll see of this group. I hope Ms. Newman has more stories to share.

I enjoyed reading Emperator by Mirium Newman. The story sweeps you away to different lands and situations, which is definitely what I need from a fantasy.

The ENJOYMENT factor is high.
The writing STYLE is smooth and flows well from beginning to end.
CHARACTERS are well-written and likable even when their flaws are shown.
The ATMOSPHERE suits the book. There is an edge of desperation you only find after a war.
The PLOT is believable and strong enough to carry the tale.
ENDINGS can make or break a story. This one was perfect.

So my ESCAPE score adds up to a 4.75 (rounded to 5 for star purposes).

I received a digital copy of the book for a Goddess Fish Promotions tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

This book was amazing - it's descriptive without going overboard, the characters have decent depth and are introduced in such a way that it doesn't feel like an information dump. Newman did an excellent job with making the reader feel like they were watching the story unfold instead of reading it in a book. The story flowed smoothly, and the plot moved along at the perfect pace, keeping you engaged without feeling rushed. Highly recommend for fantasy lovers who don't mind a side of romance.
