Branko learns he will be sold into slavery when they dock in Charles Town, so he doesn’t hesitate to jump ship onto a neighboring sloop in the harbor. This boat will weigh anchor with him at the helm–once he decides what to do with the lady chained in the cargo hold who claims she’s a vampire.
Magda Dashkovari’s body has been given to science while she’s still living in it. Her prayers are answered when a pirate boards her boat, but she should have asked for her rescuer to be less bloodthirsty than she is…
Scientists hunt her in town, plantation owners hunt him from the north and south, Blackbeard blocks Charles Town Harbor to the east, and a war rages between settlers and natives to the west. These unlikely allies will have to link together to escape a life in chains…but will their trust in each other endure their journey to freedom?
Marilyn Barr currently resides in the wilds of Kentucky with her husband, son, and rescue cats. When engaging with the real world, she is collecting characters, empty coffee cups, and unused homeschool curricula. She is a sucker (haha) for cheesy horror movies, Italian food, punk music, black cats, & bad puns.
This was a terrific pirate romance with all the pirate lingo, sailing the high seas, and adventures lovers of the genre could want. Plus vampires! Branko learns that despite having served alongside sailors on his previous vessel, he will be sold into slavery when they dock at port. He jumps ship and discovers a woman chained in the hold. Magda Daskovari has been given up by her husband to scientific research and is being experimented on and held like an animal as an object of curiosity. I loved the dynamic of these two together. Spicy, snarky chemistry (loved “sea hag”) and plenty of comedic scenes as they get disentangled from Magda’s encumbering dress as well as her former life, though deep scars remain from her first abusive marriage. I particularly loved the challenges presented by her light sensitivity and need to feed. 🐊🏴☠️This presented some funny moments. The steamy scenes were hot! And as we got to the conclusion of part one I was left bereft, needing to know what’s next for these two. Fortunately book two is coming up right around the corner!
This was such a fun and easy read and the perfect length for the start of a series. Although it can get violent at times, it's not grisly, and the easy banter amongst the characters keeps it entertaining and lighthearted. I really liked Branko's character from the beginning, and while Magda's character took me a little longer to warm up to, I also liked her a lot. I definitely felt some echoes of Pirates of the Caribean, but it is definitely its own story. I never would have put Vampires and Pirates in the same story, but it ended up working pretty well for me. What I found odd was how some did or didn't believe in Vampires; it was hard to figure out how Vampires fit into this universe, especially if there was an island of them (her former husband). Ultimately, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story and I am looking forward to the next book.

I can't say I have ever read a book about pirates AND vampires. It was such a refreshing read filled with adventure, humor, and great chemistry between the characters. I really enjoyed Marilyn Barr's take on vampires in this book. I especially thought the ending was satisfying. After all Magda had gone through with her last husband, I enjoyed the direction the author took in ending the book and leading into the next one.

I think this book clearly shows skill on the author’s part. There were moments that were really well written and I could tell how much effort was put into fleshing out the environment.
That being said, I think the book fell short with fleshing out the characters’ respective voices. They weren’t strong or distinctive enough, and I finished the book feeling like I still didn’t really know Magda at all. Both characters had strong identities too, so I don’t think it was a matter of a character naturally meandering or feeling slippery to the reader — I really wanted to feel the difference in the cadence of their voices, and the particular way they approached situations. It felt a little muddied to me, and could have benefited from more small details about the characters’ preferences and perspectives being interspersed with the main action.
I also think the scenes where a lot of action was occurring were confusing to follow. I am a very visual reader and I like to imagine what’s happening as I read, and it was pretty difficult for me to do so throughout the book. The scenes needed more clarity in their set up, especially when there were two converging scenarios — I felt like the room Branko found Magda in was completely different from the one she described herself in.

This book was a fun read. Magda’s character was a force to be reckoned with at times, she chose the perfect moments to show her vampirism , thus terrifying those around her. Branko was an ultimate pirate, always thinking ahead, of the best way to stay in charge of the situation but not without action or danger. I was hooked from the beginning, wondering where exactly the story would take our characters. I liked the supporting characters, and I’m eager to see where the story takes them next as well. However, there were moments where the dialogue felt A bit flat at certain points during the story. Overall a very entertaining read.
Vampires and Pirates both – what a treat! (Or, potentially, what a mess, but I've read enough of Marilyn Barr's work by now to know she'd get this right.)
I was impressed at the level of detail and research the author put into her previous book DANCE WITH A WYLDER BEAT (and am eagerly awaiting the sequel to that!)... this new series shows that she can switch gears from the American Great Plains and the days of the White expansion to a different Wild, Wild West. In this case we're talking about the Western Atlantic and West Indies and the days of such notorious pirates as Blackbeard and Hornigold.
Branko – a West Indian man of African descent – has been a sailor on Blackbeard's ship for some years. He was rescued from slavers by Blackbeard and is loyal... until he finds out that his captain intends to sell him as if he were still enslaved. He decides to escape and runs into... Magda the abused and discarded wife of an Eastern European despot, who also happens to be a beautiful vampire. Magda is being sold by her husband to 'scientists' for dissection and has been transported across the ocean in chains for that purpose.
It's a match made in Heaven – or Hell. Their wild and clever escape is just the beginning of their adventures of course (this is the first of a trilogy), but their competing needs and desires and their growing affection for each other is wonderful. And, of course, there's Magda's need to drink blood.
Warning: if you read this book you're going to find yourself wanting to read the sequels!
(Caveat: I know the author IRL... and to my knowledge she has never engaged in sea-banditry!)

A pirate and a vampire? Okay, this is original, I've never read anything of the sort before, so sign me up!
Branko, the pirate and freed slave, and Magda, the vampire who's been sold to science, team up in this unlikely adventure during which Branko doesn't even believe Magda's a vampire at first (though how you don't get something's horribly wrong when someone's skin legitimately burns in front of your eyes too fast for it to be natural beats me), but eventually it all goes around what comes around, just as much as romance.
Because you KNOW there's bound to be romance!
But between dodging authorities, scientists, and ending up in a rag-tag team of former pirates from the Queen Anne's Revenge after Blackbeard ditches them (oh yeah, cameo from the head honcho himself here), our unlikely heroes figure out they're each other's ride-or-die really.
So you're actually surprised when Magda turns Branko down, though it DOES make sense when you think about it, from her point of view.
Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed it, though sometimes modern speech slipped through the editing clutches, and I'd have loved to know just what makes Branko so special, with his ability to literally bounce around like he's a bouncing ball, balancing high up and whatnot. I'm hopeful this gets explained in the next two books in the series, which I plan on picking up as soon as can be.
Overall though, I enjoyed Magda and Branko's journey of self-discovery, how they work well as a team, and finding a chosen family that would do anything for them.
So, I'll admit, I'm not usually a pirate-vampire paranormal sort of gal. (I don't usually use the word gal, either.) But, I loved this book and got a jolt from the reading.
Walk the Plank is the first book in author Marilyn Barr's series with more to come and soon. Branko and Magda battle their way into and out of everything from a tyrannical husband and ship captain to trudging through the mud and being held at gunpoint. "I curse my husband, the sea, and my dress with every stomp through the mud."
The fight scenes alone are fabu-worthy. Who knew I was a sucker for a boot-in-the-mouth, sword-in-the-belly, sweetheart of a smooching pirate adventure! The author has done her research on the geography and must be an expert in the art of piracy.
The pirates' antics are reminiscent of Johnny Depp's bluster and pranks, Caribbean style. Mix that with clever ways to get around the authorities and those who seek to harm Branko, Magda and the crew rather than relying on crude blood and guts scenes. (My way of saying there's not much gore and yet it works.) Lots of action and trash-talk make Walk the Plank a fast-paced read.
The smooching? Accompanied by just the right amount of steam.
I read an ARC of this book and the opinion is my own.

This wasn’t really the book for me. The premise of this story was interesting but the execution just didn’t quite work for me. I didn’t believe the love story, and honestly didn’t really care much for the main male character Branko. I would’ve liked him more if he didn’t flip back and forth between misogynistic pirate and worshipper of Magda(female mc). It played heavily into the “she’s just not like other girls” trope. However the representation of Branko as a black man fighting to have control of his own life in a time of slavery and extreme racism; as well as the representation of Magda as an abuse survivor and social outcast definitely made them a couple you could root for, I just wish the Author had focused more on their growth as people instead of pushing a relationship that really could’ve developed intensity later.
Thanks to Booksirens and publishers for this eARC of Walk the Plank.
Walk The Plank is a completely unexpected adventure. Vampires and Pirates combined is not a novel I've ever read before. Branko learns that despite having served alongside the sailors, he will be sold into slavery. He jumps ship and meets Magda Daskovari, who has been given up by her husband to scientific research. The story pacing was quite slow at times, though it was a fun and easy read. The tension between the two main characters was great though I felt the romance scenes were not very spicy, which I thought was odd since the novel did get violent at times. The banter amongst the characters kept it entertaining. I thought this was a great start to the series, as this book ends on a cliffhanger I assume there'll be a book 2 to pick up where it left off.
Definitely not my favorite variety of paranormal romance. Really enjoyed the take on slavery and pirates but it left a little to be desired.
Magda reads naive in some chapters and in others she seems very worldly. At times it gave me a little bit of whiplash when dealing with the chapters where Branko and her are interacting in interesting ways.
Branko came off as a sturdy character, one that I felt like the plot and the storyline kind of hung on throughout the book. When he first meets Magda and their interactions kind of rubbed me the wrong way.
Overall definitely an interesting book, didn't make me want to continue the series but it was well written and beautifully descripted.

Pirates and Vampires—Oh, my! I laughed and fell in love.
Walk the Plank by Marilyn Barr is the best book I have read this year. The vivid description reminds me of the magic I experienced the first time I read an Anne Rice novel. With lines like— “Fine, sea hag. Grab your shite and get off my boat,”—the chemistry between Magda and Branko made me gooey. The side characters add even more depth to this original pirate/vampire/multi-cultural romance.
I have just crowned Branko, the pirate, my new book boyfriend.
I wanted to really like this book due to the basis of it. Pirates and Vampires, two of my favorite things, but I just could not get into it. The story line was quite slow at times and even though there was tension between the two main characters, the "spice" scenes were more FTB, not very explicit. This book ends on a cliffhanger and from what I can tell there will be two subsequent books to follow with the same characters.
Overall Rating: 3/5 Spice Rating: 0.5/5. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I absolutely LOVED this book - there is such a shortage of pirate type romance novels that isn't just strictly historical. Sometimes I think there is an over saturation of wolf shifters and fae, so this was a nice change of pace. Branko and Magda are well fleshed out, and believable characters, and I was emotionally invested in the story. I did find a couple minor editing or formatting errors, but overall I really enjoyed the story and found this a nice introduction to this author.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a interesting story of a pirate and a vampire. Branko decides to escape his captain with a small sloop. What he finds on it is, Magna, who tells him she is a vampire. They end up blowing the sloop and soon they are on the run from bounty hunters and scientists. Their adventures start when Branko refuses to believe Magna is a vampire for the longest time and then it doesn't matter. There is a hint of caring between the two as Branko makes plans to leave the island. I am looking forward to the next book. I liked the MMC, he had moments of wit and was very caring in parts. I liked how the story progressed. However there were scenes when it felt like something was missing. The FMC was great when she would show her strength but then all of a sudden she would turn into this shy and scared character. I am not sure I will continue with the series, after I finished the book I wasn't immediately needing to know what happens next. I received this advanced reader copy for free and am leaving my review voluntarily. Thank you to booksirens.
Wish there was a half star to make this 4.5 starsI really enjoyed the chemistry between Branko and Magda. Their banter was fun and seeing how their partnership developed was a treat.
They are the strength of the story, as a few spots were slow in outside action. I was expecting more of a confrontation with those chasing them, but it was more small skirmishes.
The last 30% picked up steam - both in plot and romance and I loved every moment. I look forward to book 2!
Vampires? Pirates? Really? Yup! It works and I loved it. Magda the vampire is figuring out life outside of the awful life she's led. One of abuse and treachery. Branko the pirate is betrayed as a man of color when his captain decides to sell him to the slavers despite the pirate code. The two are thrown together and friendship grows. Swashbuckling and unexpected alliances make for an exciting and fun read. Some steamy scenes. Can't wait for the next book.
Once you start this book, you won't want to put it down. A sheltered vampire who is both innocent and powerful meets a pirate, former slave on the run who is very clever and moral. For a pirate ;) Together they make the perfect partnership as they each learn who they are and what they want to do with their freedom. Great historical and a fun read. Definitely reccing this one and looking forward to the next book in the series.
What a heart-stopping and satisfying adventure! I’ve never read a pirate romance, and I’ve never read a vampire romance, and now I’ve devoured both in one go! What fun! Set in a richly detailed world, Walk the Plank grabbed hold of me from the first chapter and didn’t let go. Full of passion and adventure, the story is simply exuberant! I can’t wait to see what adventures come next for Magda and Brando!
I really loved the combination of vampires and pirates, it was a wonderfully done story with a unique concept. The characters were so well done and I really had a good time reading this.

A quick read, some funny moments and some sad especially how people who are different are treated. Interesting dynamics between the characters. Look forward to seeing what becomes of Magda and Branko. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Walk The Plank was a very unique story - Vampires and Pirates together is not something I have read before. I generally found this to be a fun adventure and I am excited to pick up future installments in the series!
Marilyn Barr has created a wonderful story involving a vampiress, a pirate crew and a hero who has rescued her from being dissected for science. I can't wait to read Walk the Deck to find out how Magda, the amputees copes with being a pirate!
This is the first book I have read by Marylin Barr and it won’t be my last. I was in a book slump and this book had everything I was looking for, action, romance and some kick ass characters.
I read a fair amount of vampire fiction and a more than fair amount of Regency romance. Put the two together and add a dash of pirates? I'm in! When I read the description of this book, I thought this is either going to be awesome or a hot mess. I'm happy to report that I really enjoyed it.
Branko and Magda are both complex and multi-faceted with rich backstories that shape them and influence their actions. Supporting characters are also well developed and interesting (I mean they are mostly pirates so of course they are quite the lot).
There is plenty of adventure as Branko and Magda try to make their escape. The relationship between them is more of a slow burn while they try to figure out their complicated feelings towards each other.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the rest of the series.
I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a complimentary copy.
DNF. Didn't like the story. Couldn't waste my time to finish it, but did get through about half of it. No rating since it would be unfair to rate a book that I didnt finish reading.
