Ten spooky stories perfect for reading out loud anytime you want the fun of a good fright.
Boo! See, scared you already. This collection of ten short, spooky stories is perfect for reading out loud on Halloween night, at a sleepover, around the campfire, or anytime you want the fun of a good fright. Jeremy John delivers a frightening trip to the past, where Wild West criminals met the hangman and brave knights battled monsters in the forest, through to today, where young vampires use dating apps and home smart speakers manipulate their owners. Turn out the lights, grab a flashlight, and enjoy the fun frights of a pumpkin patch that hides a terrible secret, the real reason Sasquatch are rarely seen, and of course, what is buried in the grave of Mikey Dunbar.
Jeremy John is currently ranked as the sixty-second most famous person from Brantford, Ontario. (Look it up. There are a lot.) Jeremy’s career in broadcasting has included co-hosting shows on 680 NEWS, KiSS FM, and Breakfast Television. Jeremy lives in Sudbury, Ontario.
He has written two books, both for Dundurn Press. "Robert's Hill (or the time I pooped my snowsuit) and other Christmas stories", December 2021. "The strange grave of Mikey Dunbar and other stories to make you poop your pants", October 2022
The third book in the "poop trilogy" will be released by Dundurn Press May 14th 2024. A collection of short stories perfect for summer reading, it is called " The Death Swing at Falcon Lake: and S'more Summer Stories to Make You Poop Your Pants"
This was actually a super from read. My only real complaint is, I wish I read it more around Halloween and not Christmas 🤣. The Strange Grave of Mickey Dunbar is a collection of short stories, and every story was super fun to read. I definitely got some Are you afraid of the dark vibes from these stories, just picture yourself sitting around a campfire hearing scary stories, well these are the stories you would hear. Definitely a super fun read
Thank you Dundurn Press for sending me the perfect October read. I loved this collection of short stories SO much.
This book feels like being 12 again and running out of your house shoving a beat up old paperback in the back pocket of your jeans. It feels like speeding down old country roads on your banana bike to the fall fair grounds after dark. It smells like the damp red and orange leaves that have fallen mixed in with the campfire you and your buddies may have illegally constructed. And it reads like you have a flashlight under your chin while you make your friends squeal with both terror and glee.
I. AM. HERE. FOR. THIS.
I love Jeremy Johns macabre, but playful writing. I think the quartet of Mikey Dunbar stories is so great and clever. I’ve been thinking a lot about the unreliability of my own memories. As well how myth and legends form. How small town history is sometimes just like a long game of telephone tag. I thought the way they were spaced out amongst the other stories flowed really well. And just enjoyed the through-line of the last sentence. I must say, I’m partial to #2.
I loved all of these tales, and I can’t wait until I get the go ahead from my niece’s parents to read her these during some October in the future. I think some of my favourites were : Our Little Pumpkin Patch, A New Device, and The Young Knight and the Quest to Kill the Woldger. But just a spookily great time all around. I think this book will suffer from many creased pages, and sticky fingers from Halloween treats due to it being read over and over .
✨BOOK REVIEW✨ The Strange Grave of Mikey Dunbar and other stories to make you poop your pants By Jeremy John
I received this book in the mail the other day, and as soon as I saw it was a collection of spooky short stories I opened it, and read the first one!
Could not set this one down! I loved it. These scary little stories took me back to the days of Are You Afraid Of The Dark, you know “On behalf of the Midnight society, I call this story”…..
There are 14 short stories in this book, each one packing it’s own unique little burst of fright! John has an awesome writing style, and I really enjoyed the mixture of terror and humour.
Absolutely perfect for this time of year, but also excellent for a good old dose of campfire creep outs! This one will be coming on our next family camp trip, and I just know it will be enjoyed for years to come!
Apparently there is a Christmas book by this Author as well, really looking forward to reading that one for the holiday season!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This little book was absolute spooky perfection. I loved everything about it. This one came out on October 4th so grab yourself a copy…..if you dare! 👻🎃
Thanks so much to @dundurnpress and @jjjeremyjohn for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
QOTD: What was your fave Halloween show as a kid? I have to say mine was Are You Afraid Of The Dark? And The Simpson’s Treehouse of Horrors!
This was such a fun collection of stories. It was perfect for this time of year. So easily readable, short and snappy, with a side of spooky in there. I especially loved the online escape room that takes you to the bonus story. More content like that at the end of books, please!
Thanks to Dundurn Press for a gifted copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
This was a fun (and gruesome) collection of stories, perfect for Halloween time. The format, characters, and storylines were reminiscent of reading Halloween stories during my childhood (albeit with more violence lol). I think my favourite story has to be “New Device”. I also liked the different reiterations of Mikey Dunbar’s story. Solid spooky tales!
fourteen fun and spine-chilling stories perfect for sitting around the campfire, taking to a sleepover and of course it makes a great addition to any Halloween reading list.
