Artists and Athletes #2

The Moves We Make

Rate this book
Landon
On my university soccer team, people see me as an obnoxious loud-mouth, but this semester, I’m turning over a new leaf. Part of that involves supporting my best friend and his new relationship (with a guy!). Ravi being gay has really thrown me for a loop. The way he looks at Steven, it makes me feel… jealous? I’m not gay, but no girl has ever made me feel the way those two feel about each other. To top it off, I’m forced to take my university arts requirement in the form of a dance class! I have to fumble around trying not to fail while the teaching assistant Dane refuses to take it easy on me.
Still, the longer I spend in dance class, the more I get to know the real Dane: he’s fun, interesting, sweet, attractive, and… did I say attractive?! No way, that’s not what I meant. Because if I actually feel that way then… turning over a new leaf just got a LOT more complicated.

Dane
Dance is my life, and being a performing artist is my ultimate goal. That’s why I took this university TA position and why I’m hoping to secure an internship in the big city. I refuse to get distracted by some (admittedly handsome) jock that I’m tasked with teaching. He’s uncoordinated, but eventually, I can tell that he’s actually trying, so I cut him some slack. There’s also the tiny detail that he admits he may not be 100% straight.
That’s fine by me. It’s not like a guy like that would go for someone with a messed up face like mine. Still, as the weeks go by, something shifts and we become closer. I can’t let myself become sidetracked in catching feelings for a boy who’s new to being queer. I just need to disregard the burning chemistry we have whenever we’re in the dance studio alone. It’ll be easy to ignore the way he makes my heart flutter when he talks to me, or how charming he is when he lets down his guard.
Well… maybe one kiss won’t hurt, right?

[ “The Moves We Make” is a low-angst, male/male romance, opposites-attract story involving hands-on movement lessons, road trips, drunken dance floors, soccer games, and discovering what love and sex with the RIGHT person can actually lead to, HEA guaranteed.
It is the second of the “Artists and Athletes” series but can be read as a standalone.]

CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. At first it was all about superheroes and pocket monsters, but his genre of choice has expanded since puberty.

He’s been consuming young adult gay fiction since he was a teen, but within the past five years moved up to the big leagues of gay adult romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.

He lives in New York City with the love of his life and is a nurse by trade. When he’s not reading and writing, he’s playing board games and practicing music. He is honored to become a self-published author, and if you’re reading this, your support means so much to him that it’s giving him a tingly feeling (in a good way).

There’s a new student in Dane’s dance class, a jock. It looks like a joke but the guy is serious.
Landon is confused, he isn’t as straight as he thought he was, Dane makes him feel things he never thought he could feel, attraction, he wants to know Dane.
They become friends, and later on lovers, Landon is head over heels.
Dane never had a boyfriend, he was never wanted. He still isn’t sure about Landon and him.
He got his career and ambitions.

At first sight, I wasn’t sure about Landon, he looked superficial acting like a cool jock. He wanted to change, when he opened up we get a look at his kinder site, he cares, he’s insecure, feels dumb, and is afraid Dane will like his family more than him.
Landon can’t understand why Dane doesn’t believe him when he calls him beautiful and more.

A sweet story, about friendship, insecurities, acceptance, second chances, true love, and commitment.
Where I had my doubts about Landon? He became my hero, that’s for sure!
The storytelling was with kindness, the author created some sweet characters and a lovely plotline.
The story is mostly focused on the main characters, there was slow progress, maybe a tiny bit dragging, with no angst, some mild stress, nothing really upsetting is happening, a lot of sweetness, and thank goodness a hea!

Dane and Landon are so cute! I loved seeing them grow into better versions of themselves and finally accepting they an honest connection and to be loved.

Landon turned out to be such a kind person, so open with his feelings and not shying away from love.

I appreciated the low angst and all the good songs thrown in there, I discovered a couple of gems!

And can I say, I can’t wait for book three? I’m pretty sure I know the next two couples and I’m so excited for this next one specifically, I’m sure they’re going to be the cutest!

I am so happy to be back with the athletes and Jocks again. This time it is Landon’s story and his time to have to do an arts class. He may have thought he could avoid it but that so wasn’t going to happen. They only class available is a dance class and he is not to best pleased to have to do it. In the class he meets Dane, who is the TA for the class and his group leader. The sparks for flying form when these two first meet.

Landon has it all really. He is on the soccer team, handsome, and from a rich family. He has it made for him, but he is feeling a bit down. After watching his best friend fall in love, his is craving a real relationship and not the ones he has with women now. After what happened in the previous book, he is trying to turn over a new leaf and he is really trying his best. When we find out more about him, we find that he doesn’t have the picture-perfect life we all assume. He feels like an outcast in his own family as they are so perfect and super clever. He feels that his family doesn’t really see him, and I felt so sad for him.

Dane is a dance major and wants to get into a dance company. He loves to teach others dance and he is amazingly talented in all aspects of it. He suffers from an eye malformation, which caused his eyes to be unsymmetrical and him to only to be able to see properly through one. He isn’t very secure in how he looks and that causes him to believe he isn’t worthy of being loved.

When these two meet Dane doesn’t like him, but as they get to truly know each other they truly begin to like each other. Landon is questioning he is completely straight after his sudden attraction to Dane. I think he handled finding that out really well and went about finding it out the right way. These pair were destined to be together as they are both crazy about each other, it is only Dane’s insecurities holding him back. I did like the way they went about dating and getting to know watch other. They took is slow and didn’t rush into full on sex straight away. That is more realistic with-it being Landon’s first time with a guy and it would have been nut for him to go straight into the deep end.

Things are not smooth going near the end for these pair, but I knew that they would work out away to be together. Landon did seem a little too perfect to me in this one and he was a proper gentleman. He was never like that with the women he dated, and his view of things changed rather suddenly after how he acted in the last book. I am looking forward to the next books in the series and you can already see who the next two couples will be. This is a great start for a new author.

I am on a roll with reading some amazing NA romances lately and the Moves We Make slots right into that category. I really loved getting to know Landon more. There was so much more to him than that loud mouth jock who's besties with Ravi. He surprised me in the best way with his kindness and vulnerability with Dane. I loved how he was so open to exploring his feelings. He didn't need a million hookups to experiment with his sexuality. Being with Dane felt good. It made him happy and that was plenty enough for Landon.

One thing that made me happy was how Landon never went through the whole paranoid, people are gunna know drawn out stage. When people discovered his relationship with Dane there was no "big gay freak out". Landon wanted people to know Dane was his once his heart was all in. Though even Dane was surprised by Landons boldness, I really loved how the author portrayed his coming out as no big deal with everyone else. Sometimes I get sick of seeing all the homophobia and judgement, though I know sadly that's reality. I think some of that was what had Dane holding himself back for much of their blossoming romance. Dane just wasn't used to being the center of someones universe and it had him running scared.

This book was less angsty than book 1. It was heavy on the feels and romance which I really enjoyed. Dane and Landon just clicked in such a sweet way. A bunch of new side characters were introduced and I must say I'm hoping for a bunch of their stories in the future. I have a pretty solid inkling of who book 3 is about based on the title and the tiny hints in this one. It's definitely going to go to the top of my TBR pile once its release date is announced.

This one I considered boosting to 4 stars as I am weak for anything dance related. Add that Dane and Landon have a stunning hands on teaching moment in front of the mirrors, just all of the heat and that first glimpse at their chemistry. I was obsessed!

However the second half ruined a lot of what I enjoyed in the first half. Since it involved a deception and break up with a time skip, which is a major pet peeve for me. Also the fact they first sleep together, while Dane is planning to break up with Landon and he has no idea just ruined a lot of their relationship for me.

It just seemed unnecessary too as Landon is so supportive. He held my heart and I loved that he made Dane say it to his face, even if it hurt he deserved that at least.

I hated Dane for a while in those parts, just awful but made sense to an extent from his pov later and suppose had to have some angst eventually. But personally I wouldn't consider it low angst for me, even with fast pace and short read... They spend months apart with no contact, more time apart then together.

Still for the majority I enjoyed and Landon is my new favourite, which shocked me considering how he acts in the first book. It was great to learn about his family, why he acts certain way and trying so hard. The showing off and such made sense, he had a lot of character growth and i loved him.

The ending is so cute, gives a glimpse into possible future pairings and books. I'm excited to see the next story 💕

I utterly adored the first book in this series…and this book I loved just as much! Landon is such a fun and amazing character. He craves a real and honest connection. He sees what. His best friend has and he wants that. Poor Landon just can’t seem to find the right one. That is until Dane comes along. Dane has always felt that he was cast aside and overlooked because of his appearance. All he ever wanted was love and acceptance. My heart broke for him. When Dane and Landon start spending time together sparks fly. It is very evident that there is a connection between them. It built from the ground up. They started as friends and built this amazing connection. They had insane chemistry and it was truly amazing to watch this beautiful love grow. I loved this book so much a nd I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

Im not crying, you are crying.😭

Loved the second book of this amazing series.
It was amazing to read about Steven and Ravi again and the set up for the next books and multiple spin offs was really well done (Need more Dominic, Wei, Jung, Sly in my life rfn)

Watching Landon get his happy ending after book one (I hated him) was was so satisfying, his character grew so much and I was so proud of him.

The climax made me ugly cry a couple of times but the pay off was so sweet and perfect.

I ll never forget Landee and Dana. They will hold a piece of my heart forever ❤️

CD Rachels outdid himself with this book and I’m so excited to witness what’s next for him and his amazing characters.

I really loved this story! Landon is such a wonderful character. He craves the connection that his best friend has with his boyfriend but he just can't seem to find it with the people he's been hooking up with. Dane is used to being cast aside due to his appearance. It was heartbreaking to witness his need for acceptance and love. When these two start spending more time together because of a shared class, it is evident that there is something between them. I loved the way their attraction slowly got hotter. Their chemistry was fantastic! Landon melted me with his commitment to win Dane over.

This book is about an athlete who needs to take dance classes and his teacher...
At first there is a lot of insecurity and preconceived thoughts and then a beautiful interaction and acceptance is built... 🥰🥰
Landon (the dancer, artist, teacher) and Dane, (the seemingly self-assured, confident, badass athlete) right? Hummm… looks can be deceiving…😎

It's a slow-burning story, little angst, lots of music, lots of self-discovery, a little bit of family drama, second chances and self-acceptance.❤️❤️

So if you need a light romance and a lovely HEA, this book is for you!!

Another beautiful story, I found the character of Landon really appreciable. He wants to make up for the mistakes he made in the previous book, but he also shows more of his personality, he's caring, he's nice and sweet. All this aspect of his personality disturbs Dane who he's not used to people acting this way with him. It was so sad to see Dane's insecurities due to his appearance, and how it would interfere with their relationship.

Overall, it's a sweet and cute story that made an easy and light read - just what I needed.

I loved this book. Entertaining and steamy. Funny and sweet. Total opposites attract. Landon is a total straight boy jock. Never been with a man before. For his university arts requirement he enrolls in a dance class. Landon can't seem to take his eyes off the TA Dane in his tights. Dane is not impressed with the stumbling jock however hot he may be. At the end of the class the group must perform a program. His TA position is so important to Dane. It has to be a success in order to gain an at the internship and a career in dance. He has to get Landon in shape. The two get to know each other and things heat up. Can the two become more? Will the internship tear them apart? I highly recommend.

This is a sweet story about a couple of college guys who stumble through their first serious relationship. They both experience some self discovery. I wish there has been more show and less tell. Landon's visit to the Safe Space wasn't described at all. This should have been a pivotal scene and it ended when Dane entered the room.

ARC Review – In book 1, there seemed to be more involvement with the art & sport aspects – this one, not so much. However, it does focus more on the personal side of both MC’s. One is turning a new leaf (personality wise) and in the process discovers a lot about himself and ends up finding romance. The other MC discovers he doesn’t need as many walls around himself and that he’s allowed to be loved and can have the happily ever after. It’s a sweet, low angst story.

This was a lovely NA book with a lot of feeling. It was sweet and fun and flirty. Landon wasn’t just a soccer star, he was the star of this book. This was his redemption story, and he definitely got it. He continuously pushed himself out of his comfort zone, trying desperately to be a better person, to fight to be happy. He fought for Dane every step of the way, putting himself second even when he had every right to be hurt. He has a heart of gold, and so much compassion. I also appreciated the lack of coming out angst. I truly enjoyed him, he deserves all the happy endings.

But…I will die on the hill that I’m not convinced Dane deserves Landon. Though you’ll need to read the book to find out if you feel the same!

My heart is bursting with feelings after reading this book
Firstly let me say I got this book of gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
This is the second book in the series artists and athletes and let me tell you I thoroughly enjoyed the first book but this one, this one just had something more for me. I found myself smiling and just melting with the cuteness of these two.
Landon wants the turn over a new leaf this semester he doesn’t want to be the gobby loudmouth anymore. He wasn’t overly happy when he found out he had to take dance as a course he was more interested in staying on the soccer team and going from there but there was something about his teaching assistant that just grabbed his attention. His best friend had come out as gay in the first book, so when he started to think of a guy as cute he wondered what if.
Dana/ Dane has been a dancer since he was young and this semester he was going to be a teaching assistant. And if he was honest he wasn’t overly excited about having a soccer player on his group. He didn’t think he take it seriously. But as he got to know Landon better he found out he had other feelings towards him other than annoyance.
And once these two kissed everything changed.

I just could not stop reading about these two I was blown away. They are just so cute there’s of a little bits of this book that I’ve not mentioned as I want you to experience it yourself. But it’s about acceptance of who you are in. My heart sank when the child made a comment about Dane. Children are inquisitive they want to know everything as a parent it’s down to us to teach them. The parent should’ve said something and I felt instantly as a pair of myself let down by that woman. You will not be disappointed in this book and I am super excited for the next book in the series. And I’m intrigued to know if Landon’s brother will have a story of his own down the road He seems mighty interested in Dane.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Landon was surprised to find out his roommate is gay and is happily in a relationship. He sees what they have and is jealous, not because Landon is gay but because he wants someone to look at him the way they look at each other. He wants the connection, and he can't seem to find it with the girls he's been hooking up with. What he doesn't expect is to want to spend time with the T.A. of his dance class.

Dane is an amazing dancer but when people look at him, they don't automatically see that, they see the birth defect he has with his eye. He's become accustomed to people staring. He puts that all aside to follow his dreams to become a professional dancer. He is looking forward to being a T.A. this year and getting the internship of his dreams. What he isn't expecting is being in charge of teaching the soccer player how to dance. Finding the soccer player attractive is a consequence of being with him all the time.

I enjoyed watching the attraction and relationship build with these two characters. It was a sweet and heartwarming read. CD Rachels is a new-to-me author and I look forward to going back to the first book in the series and reading more from him.

A spectacular read where both of the main characters see themselves as lacking, and yearn for someone who sees them as more.

Dane is a college dance major who is self-conscious about his looks. He knows no one could ever fall for him yet longs to end his lifelong loneliness. Landon looks like he has it all on the surface: great athlete, stunning looks, tons of friends, but he feels invisible in his family of even higher achieving siblings.

Dane is a TA for a beginner dance class that Landon is required to take. These two do not hit it off at first - Dane is wary of the athlete who seems to be blowing off the class. Over time the two come to realize things about the other that they might not have wanted to admit at first - Landon is trying hard in a class that does not come easy to him and Dane is willing to admit he was too harsh in their first encounters. Over time a friendship develops, and soon the questioning Landon is attracted to a guy for the first time.

This pair is sweet and sexy - so caring for one another and diving in headfirst to their feelings. But while Landon is freely opening his heart to Dane, Dane is always holding a small piece of himself back for fear of getting hurt like he’s come to expect in life. They truly made me laugh and smile with their banter - Landon is full of life and it’s a joy to read how Dane gets swept up in feeling loved for the first time. They pull you in so much that it’s hard to read when things get rough. My heart broke for both of them as they struggled to find their way back to one another.

I loved this story, these characters, and the chemistry and emotion between them. I have not read the first book in the series and plan to go back and read it! I highly recommend this book if you love characters who need someone else to show them they can be loved despite flaws they see in themself. 5/5 stars

I honestly loved this book. The Moves We Make by CD Rachels is the 2nd book in the Authors Artists and Athletes series. Disclaimer, I haven’t read the first in the series but definitely plan to go back and grab it! The story of Dane and Landon honestly grabbed me from the start. Landon meets Dane when he has to take some type of Arts class for a graduation requirement and ends up in the dance class Dane is TA’ing. Through spending time together and some mutual friends, Dane and Landon discover how sweet life can be when you find that someone you just click with. Both men are dealing with personal issues in their lives when they meet. Dane has lifelong health issues that have molded how he sees the world and life in general. Landon is dealing with discovering new things about himself and finding the person he really wants to be. As they both figure out what being in a relationship entails, mistakes are made and sometimes fear is allowed to dictate decisions but in the end we get the HEA we all want for these characters. Not only did I love how strong the emotions were written into this story, I also really appreciated how the author didn’t relegate “real sex” into just part A and slot B. I find this happens in way too many stories, both MM and MF. Sex and Physical intimacy can and should be so much more than just what most people think of as the baseline and I really liked how the author presented this. Great secondary characters in this series and I hope to see Landon’s brother somewhere down the road as well!

What a SWEET and ENDEARING story!
I’m so glad I picked up this story to do a review because i absolutely loved the story! One of the best stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I loved the author’s writing style and how the story flow together. What makes this more endearing is the fact that it is an Opposite Attraction/ Jock vs Dancer kind of tropes. This jock is a very good looking guy and he falls for a dancer who has a messed up face which would normally scare the good looking guys away and he thinks the dancer is a beautiful guy! I want to grab the jock and tell him he’s pretty awesome!
This story is the 2nd book in a series. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

The story centers on Landon, a soccer star for his school who had to take a dance class as a pre-requisition. Begrudgingly, he chose this class taught by the TA, Dane, an aspiring dancer who took his craft seriously. It’s obvious that Landon did not take the class serious and he was awkward with apparently two left feet. However, Landon who is supposedly “straight” felt something for Dane. At first, Dane thought it was a joke. What would a very good looking jock want to do with a guy with messed up. He was waiting for the punch line to happen that Landon did it for the sheer fun of playing a cruel joke. But was that a cruel joke or truly falling for him in a genuine way. Definitely pick up the book if you want to find out how it ends. There’s certainly a twist!

The Moves We Make is a great second book in this college series from CD Rachels. We met Landon in book one and he wasn't bad but he didn't always think before he spoke or acted, especially towards LGBT+. This year he's determined to do better, though he arrives late to his first dance class and slightly offends his TA. Dane is looking forward to being a TA this year, planning their dance routine and is also waiting to hear back about an internship for a New York group but first, he finds himself working with, and attracted to, a complete dance novice.
I enjoyed the relationship build up between Landon and Dane, as they dance around each other. Landon is slowly learning about himself and isn't shy about knowing it, especially when it comes to Dane. Dane is the opposite and slightly unable to believe the hot jock would want him, with his disability on full display. The story plays out well, drawing them together whilst giving them a chance to grow individually as well. It's a fairly low angst romance, just a bit towards the end but they get a very much deserved HEA. There's a bit of interaction with those we met in book one, mostly in Landon's soccer team, but we also meet Danes friends and both men's families. There's a lot of support there for both of them which is always great to read.
An entertaining romance between two different men who click so well together. Definitely worth a read.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

The Moves We Make is the second book in the Artists and Athletes series, but can be read as a standalone. It is a sweet, new adult, coming out romance with a heavy focus on Landon’s backstory and both characters’ issues with low self-esteem. Dane’s focus on his facial scars and partial blindness impairs his ability to see himself as others do, given his talents in dance. While Landon’s family is not malicious, their apathy toward his interests and talents—and even his birthday—have left him feeling untethered, and lonely. Dane’s a caretaker, though, and his compassion fills Landon’s well over and over. They start a bit slowly, and there’s some low-level conflict regarding Dane’s position as Landon’s TA, however it’s not super important for the story; Dane isn’t the professor after all, and Landon does learn to dance as the semester moves forward.

The Moves We Make is book two in Artists and Athletes Series an m/m college romance that can be read as a standalone but better enjoyed in order.
This is a great second addition to the series. I had been looking forward to reading this ever since the first book The Lines We Draw.
We got to meet Landon then and granted he didn’t always make the greatest of impression’s but he doesn’t mean any harm, he just blurts things out without thinking. Now he’s trying to turn over a new leaf.
Dane has his own issues too. One of them being he doesn’t like jocks so he’s instantly not happy when Landon is assigned to his dance class.
They get off on the wrong foot that’s for sure and Dane has made it quite clear he no time nor patience for Landon. I actually felt quite sorry for him.
Whoever things progress through the book and they start getting to know each other better. But can anything come of two complete opposites?! Read to find out. I can promise you won’t be dissatisfied.
Another 5 star read. Can’t wait for book 3.
