Can a single father with a challenging past teach his daughter to become a strong, successful woman?
Nick Johnson has always been an underachiever and borderline alcoholic. He soon finds himself in over his head when his affair with Vickie, an unhappily married homemaker, results in an accidental pregnancy. Vickie abandons Nick, leaving him to raise their biracial daughter, Lynn, alone. Overwhelmed by the difficulties of single fatherhood and seeking comfort and help for himself in that stressful journey, Nick dates numerous women who will change his life forever. Will raising Lynn force Nick Johnson to mature? And what about Lynn? Will a daddy's girl, raised primarily by her father, leave her destined to fail from a lack of female guidance?
Ben Burgess Jr is the author of the award-winning novels "Monster," "Wounded," "Love and Happiness," " A Father's Sacrifice: Daddy's Girl," and the new novel "Defining Moments: Black and White." He is an active performer of spoken word poetry. Ben Burgess Jr uses his love of writing to inspire and influence youths to strive for what they believe in and never give up on their dreams. His novels "Monster" and "Wounded" are used in schools on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Ben Burgess has a BA degree in Business Management and an MA degree in Educational Leadership. He is the proud father of his daughters Jaelynn, Jaclyn, and Jocelyn, and he is active in improving urban neighborhoods and communities. Ben Burgess's dream is to have his novels adapted into major motion pictures.
Just getting by, drinking with his friends and finding a woman or two along the way was good enough for Nick. He was young, a little shiftless and living for the moment. When a wealthy and bored housewife offered him sex and companionship, he thought he was finally in love, or as close to it as he could imagine, because Vickie was special, a wildcat in bed. But the day she told him she was pregnant his imaginary world would begin to crumble and he would be the last to know when it crashed. Vickie walked out, leaving him with his newborn daughter, no money, no reliable job and no idea how to raise a child.
Ben Burgess Jr.’s Daddy’s Girl is the difficult journey to real manhood for one man that is filled with multiple failures, successes and always the fear that no matter what, he would never do right by his daughter. To be honest, I feared Nick would never become a true father myself as he continued to live his nightlife, depending on others to care for his daughter, justifying it by saying he was looking for a mother for his child or he needed to unwind from the pressures of life. Through several failures in dating, his own lack of honesty cost him the one woman he would forever love.
What of his biracial daughter, Lynn? How will his lifestyle affect her as she grows to womanhood? Ben Burgess Jr. has done himself proud with this dark, gritty and gut-clenching read that is sure to evoke emotions from every reader who picks up this dramatic tale. There is no sugar-coating, no fairy godmother, just a raw look at taking responsibility for one’s actions when a helpless infant is thrust into the hands of a man who is more Peter Pan than an adult.
Follow the journey through the good times and the bad times as both Nick and Lynn grow up together. Painful scenes, scenes that will bring your temper to a boil and scenes that will break your heart, or even disgust you, Ben Burgess Jr. holds nothing back as he lays bare a world filled with selfishness, huge egos and an almost total disrespect for the gift of life or the power to use that gift wisely. Witness the cruelty of a world caught up in condoning hatred for the color of one’s skin as a little girl stands alone and afraid without the champion she deserves, and feel ashamed of humanity for ever allowing such a poison.
Daddy’s Girl has real meat, real substance and there is power in Ben Burgess Jr.’s words. Put down that romance or that fantasy and taste the bitterness of a fictional work that is far too close to reality as it pricks the conscience of everyone who reads it.

Children can change the direction in your life. There is not a greater feeling then when you look into the eyes of your baby the first time. The love is instant and the feeling indescribable and all you want is to give that baby the world and forever protect him or her from all the wrongs in the world.
When Nick started an affair with Vicky he never thought anything would come of it, until she became pregnant. A sort of drifter with no ambition for a future, the birth of his daughter changes his life. Vicky has no desire to be a mother and gladly hands the infant over to Nick.
Now a single father the author takes us through Nicks struggles and also the deep bond that forms between Nick and his daughter.
This book is very well written and so emotionally charged that one moment I was laughing, the next I was crying. I loved all the characters accept one, Vicky. As a mother myself, I will never understand how a woman could walk away from a child they carried for no reason at all. She was a selfish, uncaring woman and I absolutely despised her.
The synopsis definitely piqued my attention, but I honestly wasn't prepared for what was written. This book hit on so many issues and emotions. This doesn't happen too often, but I'm at a loss of words and am unable to write this review in a manner that will give this book the justice it deserves.
Daddy's Girl delves so much deeper than the daddy-daughter relationship. The content, the pace, the character development, the flaws, the conflict, the pace, the growth; all were perfect. This is by far Ben's best work to date.
Wow. Ben you've done it again. I give this book five stars all the way around. The story held my attention from the first chapter. The characters were realistic, and really touched on topics that many try to avoid. My favorite character was Reha. I was hoping that the story would bring her some happiness. If I were to pick an audience for this book it would definitely be for young ladies living with they're father's alone. Reading about the experience could bring some insight towards they're situation. FOOLS character was real. I know a lot of them. And Hazel was a darn mess.
Wow! The first part of Daddy’s Girl by Ben Burgess Jr. is brutal. I was really trying to give Nick the benefit of the doubt but for the love of God, he couldn’t make the right decisions to save his life! The only good choice he made was keeping his beautiful baby girl. Every woman he hooked up with was horrendous. He consistently missed the signs that they didn’t want his baby around, that they were gold diggers or lazy heifers. Will he ever grow up? This novel is an emotional roller coaster! Told from different points of views, all the characters extremely complex, you can’t help but feel frustrated with them, cry with them, hope for them and sometimes smile with them. This authors voice is very well received, his writing style unique. There are sexual scenes but I feel that they enhance the storyline instead of straying away from it, which is really hard to do. The intricacy of this story is amazing. The sad reality; this is how life truly is. The struggles and the hardships everyone faces, no matter the color of our skin. This is just one of many families living in our day in age where race makes a difference no matter what naïve people want to believe, where society says we all should get along and live amongst each other when nobody is really seen as equal by said society. The less financially fortunate people do their best to raise their children knowing that they have just ONE chance to get through to them before the streets dig their claws in. Some will want to work and better themselves, some will expect others to do it for them. Some will get trapped in gangs or drugs, usually with only one way out. Some will go off to college on scholarships and make something of themselves. But then… the cycle starts over. I thoroughly enjoyed this book even with, or maybe because of, the emotional turmoil. I strongly recommend you read this as there are life lessons to be learned, morals to uphold and loyalty that you just don’t see enough of anymore. Grow up with Lynn and Nick in this extraordinary story of unconditional love for family. My rating for this novel is 5/5.
I enjoyed the realness that the author let fall out from his characters thoughts. I felt that the main character (Nick/Fool)'s reaction to becoming a father were accurate and honest. Parenthood is scary to be put plainly and I found myself identifying very quickly with his fear and feeling for him as he struggled throughout the book to become the father that his daughter, Lynn, deserved. The way his life unraveled was entertaining and the books plot was filled with twists and turns that I did not see coming.
The author has a talent that most do not, being able to tell a story that gave you just enough details to let your imagination run wild. I enjoyed the ups and downs that the author painted for Nick as he matured into a man, including the long list of ill chosen women that he included in he and his daughters lives as well as the not so well thought out decisions that he made. The female characters that were brought into into the story were almost needed and even though I personally despised the women he dated including Jasmine and especially Hazel, they came with somewhat of morale lesson to their existence.
I appreciated the fact that the author didn't dog these women out, he only stated the facts, spoke on real life scenarios that either men fall victim to... I enjoyed the fact that the author brought multitude of different races into the story and represented each of them properly and well, never really going to the stereotypes that so many other author fail miserably at clinging to in their novels. With each chapter that I read, I felt like I was witnessing Nick's struggle first hand and by the time I finished this book, I felt like his brother Scout and Chance were my own brothers, I felt like Lynn and I had grown up together and each trouble that came their way was one I endured with them.
This book was truly a work of art and it is a must read, especially if your looking for something different than an average 'street lit/ urban read'. Don't get me wrong, there were drug dealers, there was baby momma drama, hood rats (Hazel) and plenty of skirts being chased included in this novel, but at the end, felt that I learned something... there was a morale to this story and I was able to live at least a few chapters in everyone's shoes which was enjoyable and gave me an extremely deeper connection with all of the characters.
I cried, I laughed and I was completely thrilled at the way that this book ended. Especially appreciated the fact that I got to grow up with Lynn and actually take a peek at how her life turned out, and why she became who she became... Such a beautiful story, and definitely different from what you could possibly expect. I didn't intend to cry, but ended up balling at the end as everything ended beautifully... very well written. Ben Burgess did an immaculate job with this one. This book hit me hard because, I have to admit... I myself am a Daddy's Girl... it was as if I was reading a book filled with the truths that my father would never share with me, but we're struggles I know he faced... Great job.
A 2:00am telephone call is all it takes to fully wake Nick Johnson. The mother of his child, Vickie De Luca, has gone into labor one month early and threatens to sign the baby over to the state if he is not there to prevent it. Panicked and hungover, Nick rushes to the hospital as fast as he can and is able to witness the birth of his daughter, Lynn, after receiving disgusted looks from the nurse at the disheveled Black man standing before her. Nick had met Vickie while doing renovations for her mobster husband, Frank, and after catching Vickie mid-dress, one thing had led to another, resulting in a highly guarded secret pregnancy. Choosing to continue her lavish lifestyle with Frank, Vickie makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with the baby, before handing her to Nick and disappearing. As Nick continues to go clubbing and brings strange women home for sex, he soon realizes that he needs to choose between his daughter and his drunken ways – a choice which becomes easy after a close-call with death. Lynn has many difficult questions for her father over the years – questions about her mother, her skin color and why her father never seems to have her back when she is in trouble. As Lynn physically grows, Nick grows up emotionally as he realizes that fatherhood is one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding jobs a man can ever have.
This story really hit home for me and gave me a whole new appreciation for my own father – a Black man who had no choice but to raise me on his own. Ben Burgess Jr. has captured every possible aspect of fatherhood while tackling bad habits and tough choices. Initially, the main character, Nick, relies on everybody else for help with his daughter and soon takes them all for granted, but when they all desert him, he is forced to wake up and fully face the situation he is in. The writing style of Daddy's Girl is so fluent and easy to absorb, painting the perfect picture in my head of the events in play. The sequence of events were brilliantly delivered, starting with the panic of a premature birth, then how he had actually met the mother of his child – a woman who is married to a mobster and wanted to get back at her husband after he had cheated on her – before continuing to Lynn’s childhood and Nick’s realization that he is solely responsible for his daughter’s well-being and safety. Every one of the characters was complex, yet believable. I fully enjoyed reading Daddy’s Girl and recommend it to mature readers who enjoy inspirational tales with full spectrum of drama, humor, heartbreak, tragedy and self-sacrifice.
Nick meets Vicky and during their affair Vicky gets pregnant. Not wanting the baby, Vicky threatens to sign the baby away if Nick doesn't get to the hospital. The way this little girl comes into the world and is shuffled like she’s a burden, ugh I have no words.
We read about Nick’s struggles as a single father and his still wanting to go out clubbing and being with other women. As his daughter gets older we see their relationship develop, of course being a natural child she has a ton of questions. Will Nick be able to answer them for her?
There is so much more to this great read.
This is my first read from Ben Burgess Jr., and I loved it. There are so many emotions you will experience while reading. I had a hard time dealing with how a mother could up and leave her child. So heartbreaking. And some of the choices Nick made were not always great. The secondary characters added a great element to the story. Also be prepared for an ugly cry towards the end such a great story. 1-click and get started today on this great story by Ben Burgess Jr.

Nick Johnson was a man with lots of flaws and it took him a little while to come to grips with all his demons. In the story, Nick had a baby with a woman who was married to a Mafioso. Once Vickie had the baby she wanted to parts of the child. Nick was left to care for himself and his baby girl Lynn. The story took us through the struggles of a single man caring for a baby and his personal strife and family issues. Nick's struggles with being responsible, and always having to depend on his brother and sister in-law financially and for shelter. As Lynn grew and Nick fell further into his problems, their relationship began to suffer. Nick kept choosing women for comfort and allowing them to have a place ahead of his own child. The Issues with his brother and sister in-law always seemed to be more enabling Nick rather than helping him. The story took us from Lynn's birth through adulthood and the emotional relationship between father and daughter.. A nice easy read..
I have read a few books by this author and he has never disappointed me. This novel touched on many relatable real life issues. Race, identity, illness, love, lust, addiction, sexuality, abandonment, sibling rivalry and parenting. This story showed the growth of Nick from a self centered screw up to a responsible Man, father and brother. What I liked most about this book is that it touched on the subject of what happens when a mother leaves their child. Eventhough it happens we rarely read about it in a book. I laughed, cursed and became emotional at times. I felt like I knew the characters. The author also brought in some characters from past novels. I always like that. I'm glad that Nick was a better man by the end of the book. This book is EYECU Recommended.
To be able to birth a child, never see your child's face & give your baby away is something I will never understand. Thankful the father was there to take her, even though he wasn't ready for it & to raise her with the help of family, was special. This book portrayed that & what the true meaning of love really is. Such a touching story of growing up, death, the love of family & finding that true unconditional love. I have never been disappointed with this author, always a storyline that will keep my emotions working.
This read was so sad but sooo loving...my heart ached so much..at the beginning..oh my.....and scout and rhea...solo sad...I really have this on my mind..and that Vickie....and hazel...a mess..fool went thru some stuff..and finally grew up....the ending.. PHONEMIAL......
It's rare to see a positive book about a father raising a daughter. I thought this book touched on a lot of topics that many authors shy away from. This was a great read for Fathers and Mothers.
Author Ben Burgess character Nick Johnson is an underachieving borderline alcoholic, who meets Vickie a homemaker who is married to Frank a wealthy man that pays little to no attention at all to his Beautiful wife Vickie. Nick and Vickie are in a toxic relationship if found out by her husband Frank it could cost him his job and a lot more. Nick has nothing to offer Vickie but yet she sees that Nick pays attention to the fact that Vickie longs for intimacy and companionship. Their relationship gets way out of hand when Vickie becomes pregnant with their daughter baby Lynn, A secret that Vicki tries to conceal. One would think that Nick has no family support at all, which is not the case Nick’s brother Joe and sister –in-law Rhea finds themselves covering a lot of nicks mistakes desperately trying to get Nick back on track so that Nick could be the father that baby Lynn needs. Nicks appetite for women and the money he spends on them takes a toll on his brother Joe and his wife Rhea lives. to add fuel to the flame as if their youngest brother Chance heroin addiction is not enough!. Joe and Rhea try to keep the family together while in the process of longing for a family of their own, it took some pain and tears and a couple of balancing acts to keep themselves together, as Nick foolishly doesn’t see that he has Baby Lynn. In this story you will cry laugh and even scream, you will find that the Johnson family have issues that we all can relate too.
Wow. This was my first read by Ben Burgess Jr. and I just have to say....Wow. This was such a beautifully written, heart felt novel that it simply blew me away. DADDY'S GIRL focuses on one man's ups and downs throughout his life as a single dad. It also focused on the various characters throughout the novel and really gave different insight to everyone's emotions, and feelings. This is a multi-POV novel, and I highly recommend it.A wonderful 5+ bars to Ben Burgess Jr. on DADDY'S GIRL.
This amazing story by Ben Burgess Jr is such a roller coaster ride for emotions Daddy's Girl has drama ,humor, and romance all rolled up in this one, this story will have you crying one moment and laughing the next. I like the way this author overlapped his characters from other books, which was so great. We as parents know what it feels like to look in our babies eyes and see that uncontain love that they have ,and the instant bond ,and that special feeling of giving of ourselves. And at that moment of birth we know we have a miracle from god in our arms .So tell me how does a mother turn her back and walk away from someone so special. Well in this story that's just what happens so be prepared for the journey that follows Nick Johnston and his beautiful Baby girl Lyn adventure in life. Nick started seeing Vicky ,who just happened to be an unhappy house wife . But Nick is a free spirit, and goes when the wind blows him. He's a carpenter by trade but he specializes in drinking and partying that was his job of choice . But to Nick's surprise Vicky becomes pregnant ,which Nick ever though anything like this would happen with them dating. Nick was like a drifter who really had no ambition for the future .But his like changed with the birth of his daughter .But not for Vicky she had no liking to be a mother and without a fight ,gladly hands the baby over to Nick. And that Nick is a single father the author takes us on this journey as Nick goes through the struggles with everything he faces ,and the bond that forms between him and his daughter is so deep. The emotions that I felt well reading this amazing story, had me laughing on moment and crying the next. I could tell you more about this touching story ,but that would totally spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this amazing story ,you won't be disappointed.
I love that he a man that did what he a dad should do. But he did have bad days and bad choices. I see he was trying to do his best but no the right ones. We all been there. But like when we fall down we must get up and do our best. And yes he fought with family and they did help each other even his brother Chance the drug addict. I can related with his brother Chance as me a addiction it's hard to stop. But I never stole from family. I did cry when he did good then went back getting high then he had it he die. Yes I do fill like that too. But he old bro man now that I cry the most Why Why. But they say it hard when God take the good not the bad. But the end it was good. Again I cry. Dude this was good book. I can related a lot.
Beautiful & well told story! This book certainly put my emotions on alert. Once I finally started reading, it was difficult to put down! It gave a great look from a male's point of view. Nick & Lynn's father-daughter relationship & his love for her was well expressed. It was good to see the growth in Nick with each situation. I liked Rhea & Lynn & the family closeness. Vickie & Hazel were 2 Nick could definitely do without. I really enjoyed reading this novel by Ben Burgess & like his other books, I highly recommend to all!
This book was written from a father's point of view which isn't written about often. Wow. It was wonderful and enlightening to see this situation from a different angle. The way this book was written was just amazing. We follow Nick from day 1 and through all his mess ups and victories as a single Dad. We see the family dynamics and how they change over the years. But best of all we see the love of a father and daughter bloom. I enjoyed this book so much . Every laugh and every tear. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. It was a awesome read. Every emotion known to mankind is found in this story. How a young man without any obligation transformed into a single parent raising a daughter. The different relationships that the father goes through trying to find a mother for his daughter. The daughter relationships with the young men in her life. Nicki had and affair with a married women. She gets pregnant. She didn't want her child. The the father Nick does. He raised his daughter Lynn. She has it hard she wants her mom. Mom wants nothing to do with her. She has a lot of life issues. And her dad is right there with her. And yes Lynn final Marry her king. Ben you did it again. Great read.
Another 5 star read from Ben. An emotional roller coaster that is INSANE! I don't give out much info because I think you should read books yourself, but I can say that I did NOT like Nick for quite a while. By the end, I loved the man. I also like how so many of the characters overlap in Ben's books. I definitely recommend this to mature individuals who can handle mature content.
I really enjoyed how this book started from when Lynn was born all the way up to when she was grown. It almost seems as her dad grew up with her. He frustrated me at times but eventually got it together. Great read.
OMG! Another great book by Ben Burgess Jr. this book took me through a range of emotions. I couldn't put it down. I also like the fact that there was characters from his other books in this one. I recommend this book. Also I'd love a sequel to see how life works out for all of these characters.
I was really impressed with this authors novel. He touched on a lot of topics that are important in the world today. I feel this book would be great for fathers, mothers, and girls in high school. It was definitely a five star read.
Daddy’s Girl, by Ben Burgess Jr., is a unique novel about the black experience in America as seen through the eyes of a father and his daughter.
Nick Johnson is an underachieving alcoholic and womanizer with little ambition other than partying with friends. After he gets a married woman pregnant, she decides to give the child up for adoption, but Nick has other plans.
Nick tries his best to care for the baby, but the man is totally clueless. Consequently, he turns to big brother Joe whose childless wife Rhea falls in love with baby Lynn at first sight.
The author does an excellent job in developing his characters. Nick has two brothers—Joe and Jimmy. Joe was nicknamed by their dad as Scout because he was a Boy Scout, the golden child, and the first-born. The youngest son, Jimmy, was called Chance because he could never do anything right. Finally, Nick was given the appropriate name of Fool because he was stubborn and needed to learn life’s lessons the hard way.
Each character was true to his moniker. Scout was the stable brother Fool and Chance turned to for financial help and a roof over their heads. Chance was the unemployed drifter turned heroin addict, and Fool was hardheaded to the point of pure stupidity.
Fortunately for Lynn, many of the characters entering her life helped Nick to raise the child in a positive way.
Burgess takes on many issues facing American families—single parenting, divorce, teen dating, drug addiction, and more. He accomplishes this through the backdrop of Nassau County, Long Island, New York where most of the novel takes place.
The biggest problem with Daddy’s Girl is descriptive settings. Burgess lets us know where the characters are chatting, but we rarely get a glimpse of the appearance of a specific setting leaving too much guesswork for readers’ imaginations.
Burgess does present a fast-paced plot and keeps it moving from first to last page as he draws on readers’ emotions of anger, sadness, joy, and tears. Guaranteed, readers will feel it all and more as they read Daddy’s Girl.
