Town playboy. CEO extraordinaire. Monumental prick. And my blind date.
Tag Calloway is toxic. If you aren’t in his small inner circle of friends, you’re nothing. An inconvenience at best. And it’s just my luck that my first blind date—heck, my first date since ‘The Incident’––happens to be with him. I’ve spent years hiding myself from men. From life. Wallowing in guilt and camouflaging my body. I live for one reason. Gigi. The broken-condom accident who has become the singular light of my life. Why did I let my friends talk me into this? He’s the last person I should trust with my feelings. My body. My scars.
But when our night turns into something I never expected, common sense fails me and I fall hard, knowing this time, it won’t be my body that suffers gruesome damage, it will be my heart.
Oh, my word. I’m speechless, this was so bad. Just so, so bad. Save yourself and go pick something else up to pass the time. Anything else, really.
What did I not like about it? Let me count the ways:
1- why on earth non-American authors insist on using New York as a setting while they spew all types of actions and subtle cultural references that are clearly not American? Where is this burning need coming from for every setting to be Manhattan? It’s supremely distracting to this reader. Who’s behind this wholly misguided insistence that the story needs to take place in one of the five boroughs? A lot of this would’ve made a lot more sense if it had taken place in a burb of London, or some such setting. The fictional Calloway Creek here couldn’t even pass for Staten Island. There is no way that I’m buying a Hero with a bomber jacket in June in Manhattan. Let alone the fact that he’s actually wearing a bomber jacket (it’s 2022 for crying out loud, not 1989).
2- all of the non-American sayings (“skivvies”, for one) and settings. The pizza place, for example, is not one I can picture anywhere in NYC, or even Brooklyn for that matter. Stick with a town you can describe accurately. Leave NY to the New Yorkers.
3- back to the non-American customs - I gave the story a pass with the fire, cause I was hoping to get into a decent romance (originally expected a two or three star read), even though I was confused as to why someone would get sub par medical treatment in Manhattan. Even without decent health insurance, if you’re in NYC, you’re still going to get the best of the best. Made zero sense. Then with the final scene *MILD SPOILER COMING UP*, I just stopped reading.
This next paragraph includes a MILD SPOILER…
…….
What really brought this down to a one star, from what was shaping up to be a two star romance, was the final climatic scene with our heroine’s daughter. Gigi (the h’s child) is crashed into a storefront window by a skateboarder, and is seriously injured. What is she injure by? Plate glass 🤦♀️ Not to be heartless, but I actually lol’d at this point. I had already decided that this story was dying a slow death with the misguided NY setting, and then this happens. In case anyone doesn’t know, plate glass is highly regulated, and in NYC if for some reason someone still had plate glass, they would be subjected to all kinds of fines or insurance costs. That’s the one thing that’s so great about the good old US of A - we’re a highly litigious society. All of the accidents that befall this heroine would have resulted in huge lawsuits if they did truly happen in NY. Something someone who is writing a story that takes place in NY should have considered if she was trying to keep any kind of semblance toward plausibility…
END MILD SPOILER…..
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - for the love of all things holy, please choose a different setting that you’re more familiar with. Most Americans are completely capable of reading stories that take place in other countries. It’s insulting to think that author’s feel as if Americans aren’t capable of grasping other cultural mores. We’re not stupid, you know.
Finally, don’t even get me started on the fact that our supposedly professional, yuppy Hero has a set of nipple rings. I just can’t.
I should’ve stopped reading once I recognized the uncredited “My Best Friend’s Wedding” movie quote that occurs in Chapter Four. Super cringey.
One save yourself from this unholy, hot mess star.
Maddie was in an accident 7ish years ago and has essentially revirginized herself because she's ashamed? embarrassed? self-conscious? of her scars. Her friends sign her up for a Tinder-like app where she can basically break the seal and get back out there. Her date ends up being the town f***boy and things start out pretty rough. They end up spending the night (not doing that) and by the time she wakes up the next morning, she decides she's in love. Tag is attracted to Maddie and of course he's decided maybe she's the one to change his "bad boy ways" and he pursues her. But he hates kids and she has a kid. He's not usually into the shy girls, and she's (supposedly) super shy.
The idea was great and I was interested in seeing how this man who hates kids, avoids them at all costs, warms up to Maddie and her daughter Gigi. I expected there to be this whole transformation of him becoming a man worthy of Maddie.
None of that happened. They do the back and forth, will they or won't they thing for a while and then decide they're going to be together. Then everything skips ahead a few weeks and he's super dad with Maddie's daughter and they are couple goals. Everyone's jealous... blah blah blah.
Then Maddie flips the script and turns into a raging crazy person when Tag takes Gigi with him to Home Depot. . She loses it, dumps him, and everyone is miserable until something happens that drags them back together.
I don't mind when characters evolve over the course of the story, but Tag didn't evolve. It's like one day he was this asshole who gave zero forks about anyone other than himself and then the next he's Mr. Domestic. Also, Maddie was kind of annoying. She constantly judges Tag for his past and throws it in his face. He takes it, knowing on some level he deserves it. She's also super repetitive. We constantly hear about her scars and how they make her less than and she feels like she has to hide.
Anyways, I'm gonna stop my rant here. I didn't like it. Others will like it. But that's the great thing about opinions, we're all entitled to them. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Unbelievable. Wonderful story. Theres sadness and so much love . tag is a playboy who goes from one woman to the next. Maddie is a single mom with enough scars and sadness to make you cry. They meet in an odd situation. But just maybe there will be something good about that
But the first chapter was so off-putting, and disgusting, I couldn’t even finish it. Note to author, the first few chapters should draw the reader in, NOT drive them away. If the rest of this book is as bad as the first chapter, I’m glad I didn’t read any further. If it gets better, I’ll just have to live with my loss.
5 star review Unlikely Date by Samantha Christy Samantha Christy is a new author to me and I am surprised that I have not read more of her books. I enjoy single parent stories and found Unlikely Date to be a good example of the genre. It was well written with characters whose story you cannot help but become invested in. Tag Calloway is one of those me you love to hate. He is arrogant and yet there is something about this bad boy playboy that drew me to him. I knew that the woman who brought him to his needs would need to be someone pretty special and Maddie was that woman. Tag has a small circle of friends and keeps everyone else at bay but Maddie sees beneath the face he shows to the world and it is what she sees that calls to her. However she has been focused on her daughter Gigi and the last thing she needs is to go on a blind date, particularly with a man like Tag. It was entertaining to watch the push and pull dynamic of their relationship as it progressed and I loved the growth of both characters, particularly Tag. The relationship he forged with Gigi was heart warming.
I tried so hard with this book, but ultimately it was just not for me. I HATED the way Tag that women were put on earth soley to please him, and his views about the women he's had in the past just grated on my nerves so freaking much. I mean you're the one who's sleeping around just the same as they are dude, but THEY are the issue? Thank you, next.
I did really like Maddie, and her past just broke my heart. I loved how she was doing everything in her power to be the best mom she could be to her little girl, and I really loved how she didn't just fall at Tag's feet. She truly made him work for it, and I'm all here for that kind of energy, but because of his repulsive ideas on women in the beginning, I just never connected with him. I also felt that their actual love story was *really* rushed, and I just would have liked to see the elusive playboy fall harder if that makes sense.
Ultimately this wasn't my favorite book, but Maddie and her little girl are worth the three stars alone!!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
Tag is my newest bad boy crush. He is only out for number 1 and F everyone who doesn’t like it! But under every bad boy is “an insecure boy who doesn’t want to get hurt.”
Maddie is a strong single mom doing her best to be a great role model for her daughter, but is she protecting her too much? “You look at your scars and see death and destruction. You see flaws and imperfections. I look at them and see a road map of your life. I see everything you had to go through to become the person you are today.”🥺🥺🥺
The connection the both of these characters have is off the charts and that first kiss🔥🔥🔥 #holyhotness So many panty melting moments mixed in with true life lessons and angst that Samantha Christy is known for! Love love love this story!
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trope: enemies to lovers Angst: 😱😱😱😱 Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥
Maddie has closed herself off from intimacy since she was scarred in a fire 5 years ago. She allows herself to be talked into a hookup app by her friends in an attempt to gain some body confidence, figuring it wouldn't be so bad with a stranger. It all goes sideways when her hookup "date" ends up being Tag, the town playboy who is sick of women having expectations past the hookup. The hookup never happens, but the last thing Tag expects is to actually fall for the young widow with a kid.
Disclaimer: I almost DNF'd this at 25%. I enjoy a good alphahole story as much as the next person, but the way Tag is written at first is just too much for me. It wasn't just that he is an alphahole, he talks like a grade A douche-canoe, with the way he speaks about women 🤷🏻♀️. This changes pretty quickly after he gets to know Maddie and becomes interested in having a relationship, but it's what kept this from being a 5 star read for me. My line is pretty far out there, but Tag definitely found it, lol. After that initial part, I absolutely loved the book. The characters had a lot of depth and issues they both had to work through. The story is well written and moves quickly and there is tons of chemistry between the two MCs. Definitely an angsty and emotional read that will leave you with all the feels. This was my first Samantha Christy novel and it definitely won't be my last, I'm just hoping the next alphahole will just be dialed down a notch or two ;)
I love all of Samantha’s book, but some just hit home. This book rose to my top five favorites because of that reason. Such an amazing message written in an amazing way! Tag is a character you love to hate at times and my heart went out to Maddie. I loved watching them grow and change in the best ways possible!
Stop I loved this! Tag was such a unique hero, I loved everything about him. I felt for Maddie and her insecurities and just wanted to hug her. I wish that it took place over a longer period of time but otherwise, this made me swoon and sob. 4.5 stars
This was an enjoyable read. I loved how Tag changed his ways (this happens slowly). There was humour, struggles with self worth. Maddie was insecure and scared, possessive with her 5yr old daughter Gigi (who was a delight) Tag was so understanding and thoughtful considering he didn’t know what love was and never had a girlfriend. Really enjoyed his growth.
Omg I don’t even know what to say. I just speechless! I don’t think there are enough words to really describe the essence of this story. This story is gonna bring you on a rollercoaster of never ending emotions! All the feelings, all the emotions, and that chemistry will absolutely blow your mind! I won’t tell anything, you should just go blind into this one and just enjoy! Trust me! I gave it absolutely 5 stars! I hope you’ll enjoy it like I did! *ARC IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW *
Maddie's been hiding herself from everyone thanks to both exterior and interior scars. She lives for her adorable daughter and hasn't dated in a long time. Then along comes cocky asshole playboy Tag and he gets under her skin and shows he's more than just his reputation. She's very resistant to anything resembling a relationship, though, and Tag's got his work cut out for him if he wants to prove he's the right man for her and Gigi. Will Maddie ever see herself the way Tag does? Will she let him into their lives completely?
Ooooh I wanted to hate Tag, and I did, for awhile. But that man had a beautiful soul locked deep inside him, and when it came out, i fell hard for him, just as Maddie finally did. Their banter was snarky, witty and loaded with tension, and I laughed more than once at their antics. But really the best part of this awesome story was Gigi, the most precocious, adorable little girl that I've read in a very long time. She stole every scene she was in, and ones she wasn't in. The three of them plus their circle of friends and family gave me a fun, at times angsty, entertaining story. I am anxiously awaiting more Calloway brothers now!

You know those characters you really want to hate, but you know there has to be something more to them, so you sit with that anger toward them until they show their true colors. And when they finally become who they’re supposed to be, those colors are wonderful and brilliant, and so much more than you expected? Tag Calloway is that character. And Samantha Christy creates the perfect story and match for him in Unlikely Date.
Maddie Foster is really one of those perfect match characters. She's the girl every romance reader wants to be friends with. She's real, and a bit chaotic, and overprotective, and tragic, and a little broken. And all I wanted to do the entire story was hug her and have coffee with her. Christy has a way of building beautiful love stories around authentic characters that you really feel like you know. And you love them. Even when you want to grab them by the shoulders, give them a little shake, and help all of their broken pieces fall into place. And of course, you will cry. Because that's what a Samantha Christy novel does so well- it brings all the feels- and Unlikely Date is no exception. You'll cry, and you'll laugh, and you'll get angry, not necessarily in that order, but it will be a wonderful reminder of how human her characters are, and how real our emotions toward them are as well.
And you’re not going to get away with just loving Tag and Maddie. Nope, you’re going to love Gigi and Patrick, too; supporting characters who capture your heart really are the best kinds, too. Plus, you’ll get a wonderful sneak peak at what is likely on the way for even more Calloway characters.
Another wonderful thing about Unlikely Date is that it’s a new standalone (hopefully leading into a new series), so you can sink right into it, even if it’s your first foray into Christy’s writing. Characters from a prior series are incorporated seamlessly, bringing familiarity and a sweet smile to those who have read Texas Roses, but enough backstory is written in that makes Unlikely Date readable as a series starter or (interconnected) standalone.
Bottom line: grab some tissues, a snack, maybe some tea, and settle in for a steamy story, with some angst, tension, tears, and of course a beautiful HEA.
At the urging of her friends, Maddie joined a hook-up app to get herself out there for the first time in four years. When her match arrives at the bar they agreed to meet at she is horrified to see that it is the town playboy, Tag Calloway. She immediately ends the night but Tag can't seem to walk away. He is drawn to her and they end up spending the night together . . . not that way but they both connected when they didn't expect or want to.
This one started off rocky and didn't really improve. While I wouldn't classify Tag as a grumpy hero, he is a douche and while he does commit and man up with Maddie and her daughter I never really warmed up to him at all. Maddie and Gigi carried this story. Maddie's past was heartbreaking but I loved how she didn't fall at Tag's feet like she needed him and made him work for her. It was really fun to read but I didn't really feel their connection. It felt like their relationship was a bit underdeveloped. I enjoyed it enough but it didn't wow me as this author has in the past.
Actually not sure why I stuck this one out. It had promise, but unfortunately too much wrong with it. Tag was a complete and total dick and never redeemed himself IMO. He claimed he was scared of love. The shit he said was unreal. Maddie (Flower Girl, which was a way overused pet name) was okay, but also neurotic when it came to her kid. She did have a past that allowed for her insecurities for the most part (but she wasn't really innocent in how it happened), but not what she put her kid through being so isolated. Take an asshole and an insecure person and insta love and not a great story for me. He also smoked which is one of the biggest turnoffs ever for me. He also quit in a day.
Woof. This book is a mess. Tag is the absolute worst. He was not a grump he was a total toolbag poser. Driving a car he can’t afford and up to eyeballs in debt still letting everyone thinks he’s this powerful CEO? Every time he spent money trying to impress Maddie all I could think was, there goes the credit card debt you idiot. Live within your means. He was such a jerk and Maddie had NO self confidence which is why she thought he was the best she could do. And Gigi falling through a plate glass window of a STORE? Nope that’s not how things work. Or people from a small town running into other people from the same town at some random hotel in NYC an hour away? Definitely not how that works. The whole story was an uncomfortable car wreck.
This is a beautiful and wholesome book. The book has a solid story and very good characters.
It follows Tag and Maddie, this a very enemies to lovers almost strangers to friends to lovers, cause they knew each other even before we first meet them both. They match on a blind date app, and based on each other likes they eventually meet up and realize that they knew each other. Tag comes from a wealthy family, just like Maddie, but Maddie has been through hardships which she really didn't want to go through. what's worst is that it became her whole personality. Both characters have a huge attraction for each other but they only make it a casual thing as their chemistry is off the charts. Their relationship develops, and guess who fell first? Our baby Tag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He fell for her fast and hard, and made it his life's mission making her family his own. He hated kids and made friends with her's, he didn't believe in relationship and he fell for her, and even better loved her with all his might and made her love herself.
Maddie eventually realizes that she is indeed in love with him, and works with him in order to have a family of some sorts. She has gone through lots of loss, mourning and even fights in order to get to where she is. She learns to love herself, she learns to get herself out there and fall in love.
I loved how good it was written, i love all of the characters involved. I honestly loved this book.
Check TWs!!
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, single mom, reformed player, tragic past, family drama.
This is the first book in the Calloway Brothers Series and it was SENSATIONAL.
Samantha writes with her heart on her sleeve and her stories will captivate from beginning to end.
Tag is the kind of man that has it all or so everyone thinks... He never wants to go through what his brother and father have so he hides his true feelings where its safe.
Maggie hasn't been with a man for so long and taking this opportunity to step out of her comfort zone is harder than she thought. She has a little girl that she needs to think about. Not expecting this date to be anything more than a one night stand, she couldn't have predicted who her date would be...
Tag would never have guessed. Can he really be with someone like her? She is way to inexperienced and shy... but yet she stirs something deep inside of him.
This book had me in hysterics. I laughed so hard I cried. Although Tag was a little arrogant in the beginning you couldn't help but love him from the start. Never judge a book by its cover.
A story with all the feels. #heartbreak #understanding #forgiveness #sass #humour #friendstolovers #unconditionallove and so much more.
Loads of story to read... I cannot wait to read about the other characters next.

I almost DNF'd this early on because Tag was such an asshole. I'm glad I carried on because the romance actually ended up being really sweet. I liked the concept of him being a huge player who falls for the most unlikely person, and he was so sweet with Maddie and her daughter.
Maddie was a really interesting heroine with a heartbreaking story. She was both strong and vulnerable, which felt realistic to me considering her life circumstances, and I loved how she was super sceptical at first and really made Tag work for her attention. Her character development near the end (the way she learnt to become so much more confident in herself) was really heartwarming.
My main issue was the pacing. I didn't buy that 1) they could fall for each other so quickly and 2) Tag's personality could do a 180 change in such a short time. I loved that he changed and became so darn sweet, but I found it hard to believe that could actually happen.
Overall it was an easy, mostly light-hearted read that still managed to have some depth to it. It won't stick with me forever, and I have a feeling I'll like the other books in the series more, but I'm glad I read it.
Couldn't finish. (I think this is the only book I have ever given 1 star to.) Couldn't even get very far in, even though I tried because I have really enjoyed some of this author's other novels. The hero was a total douche bag. The heroine's concerns about her scars and appearance was not handled well; certainly not in a way that made me feel very sympathetic toward her. I didn't like either character, so had to stop reading.
I would have given more stars if the hero wasn’t so shallow and hadn’t made offensive fat phobic jokes in the beginning. We get it. He was supposed to be a shallow d*uche. The problem is that his drastic change wasn’t believable because of how he was in the beginning. Suddenly he was attracted to a woman full of scars. Sure Jan.
In ‘Unlikely Date’ we meet Tag and Maddie. Tag is the town Playboy, and a total jerk. Especially to most woman. But since he is incredible handsome, most people just accept the way he is. One day Tag and Maddie get matched on a blind date. And to make is best friend happy, Tag decides to go. When he realizes his date is Maddie, the single mom who hides away in her flower shop he is shocked but also intrigued. And the more time he spends with Maddie, the more interested in her he gets. Especially when Maddie seems to be the only one who resist his charms.
The funny thing about this read was that I absolutely hated Tag in the beginning. What a horrible guy! He said all the things, I did everything I hate in a guy. He was arrogant, very crude, damn right rude and just really unkind. But after a few pages I began to see that there was much more about him than we could see at first. And I was completely hooked.
Maddie’s character I loved. She was a hardworking single mom, who went through a horrific accident a few years ago that changed her life completely. She does everything to make sure her little girl gets the best life, and I absolutely adored her. The moment she realizes her date is Tag, she is horrified. She wants nothing to do with the guy. But soon she finds himself enamored by the guy. Even though he is everything she doesn’t want and need in her life.
The chemistry between Tag and Maddie was amazing. And I found myself devouring every page of this book, wanting and needing more. There also where a lot of moments I found myself laughing or smiling. This book was just charming all the way. And how amazing that a guy I found horrible on the first page, I adored on the last page. Bravo for the author!
I read ‘Unlikely Date’ in one evening, and loved every single page in this read. And boy do I want to read more books by Samantha now. And I got some hints there will be more books about Tag’s siblings, so hopefully we get to read more.
We met Tag in Amber and Quinns book and I love the cameos we got from them in Unlikely Date. Self described playboy Tag is looking for no strings attached hookups wich is what he plans to get from the dating site Amber sets him up with a profile for. Maddie at the urging of her close friends to put herself out there after the incident 5 years ago which left her with bith visible and invisible scars also ends up with a profile on the same site. The two show up for a hookup and are absolutely horrified to be each other's match. They are both living in the same small town and run in opposite circles. This unlikely pair have some of the best angst to date. They give each other a run for their money especially once Gigi, Maddie's daughter get thrown in the mix. The small town drama and mixed up family tree are what I expect from places where no one leaves. I love the town gossip and the never ending drama. These two deal with small town gossip, rumors and feelings neither want to accept in this story. A fast, heart warming and emotional read.
I love a single mom, bad boy romance where it is the kid, just a little five year old that brings the whole story together. Little Gigi stole the show in this one. Her mom has suffered unthinkable tragedy and Tag is the untypical, not uber rich, growing a company, chainsmoking ass. He doesn't want a relationship, he doesn't want kids, and his family has been through tragedy of their own.
But, you will see. Through a series of sweet, funny, sentimental, and scary moments Gigi is going to bring Tag around and teach her mom the most important lesson of all. It just takes a little paint, mac and cheese, ice cream, flowers, a picnic, a puppy, stitches, and some markers.
"For the first time in my life, I'm in uncharted territory. I like a fucking girl."
This us the first book I have read by this author but it certainly won’t be the last and if like me you love single parent romances, Unlikely Date should at the top of your TBR list. This is bad boy playboy Tag Calloway and single mum Maddie’s story but it was little Gigi who at times stole the show. Maddie has not had an easy life in fact her past is tragic so she hides away from the world as much as possible but when she decides it’s time to get back out in the world and start a life for her and Gigi she decides to try a dating app…..who would have thought arrogant, bad boy Tag would be her match. Tag has a face he shows the world and an image he hides behind so is he really only looking for one night stands or can a single mum and her adorable little girl find the real man and steal his heart…. One click and to find out. I loved everything about this book, Tag is a man you love to hate, Maddie is the girl you find yourself hoping and wishing for a HEA and what can I say about the adorable Gigi apart from she took this book to another level. Watching this couple get to know each was heart way and entertaining and if single parents your jam please one click this gem.
Maddie and Tag stole my heart from their first interaction. I couldn't help but root them on as their relationship advanced.
I loved how brave Maddie was for being the great mom she was after having such a traumatic experience 4 years ago. I was so proud of how much she opened up and became more of who she really was on the outside. Inside she is an absolutely amazing woman, and deserves nothing but the best.
Tag, Tag, Tag. Going from super cocky playboy to a one woman man in no time, says alot about someone. He was always looking for that special something and found it. In Maddie. He changed so much and embraced so much more once he realized that his life wasn't what he wanted anymore.
I couldn't get enough of this book and I am so excited to continue with this series to the rest of the Callaway Brothers!
Enjoyable read but I thought I would like it more. I didn’t connect to the characters as much as I wanted and it felt dragging in some places. I also would have liked more interactions between Gigi and Tag showing how he grows to appreciate her despite his general dislike of kids.
I am interested by the glimpses we got of other characters especially Jaxon and the whole family feud going on in the town was a fun touch.
