Like all true romantics, Tiffany had always been fascinated by the great love stories of the past. The only child of two historians, she had always felt a pull towards British History and the epics that it spawned. But, instead of following in her parent’s footsteps, Tiffany chose to express her love of history in her own way: by writing about her favorite era. After obtaining a degree in English Literature, Tiffany decided to write her first book and never looked back. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her own Prince Charming, and their two beautiful children, enjoying Massachusetts’ natural wonders. Hop on for a unique journey in Regency England, filled with intensity and heartwarming romance. Let Tiffany’s words bring the enchanting heroes of an era long gone back to life and charm their way into your heart!
This is a light regency romance, probably set following the Napoleonic Wars. It follows a scarred duke, considered a beast by many, who is set to marry a wealthy young woman in a marriage of convenience. The book follows the familiar beauty and the beast tropes, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not super historical, but it's more meant to be a light, clean romance focusing on the two main characters. If you enjoy the original fairytale as much as I do and are obsessed with reading every Beauty and the Beast retelling you can get your hands on, this one will not disappoint you.
A good story for those who like gothic elements mixed into a regency romance. Warning: must be extremely typo tolerant.
Example: Blossom’s puppies were duein the summer, and the spanielhad…
Despite the rampant formatting difficulties like the above, another issue was tracking the gender of Mopsy, the Duke’s dog. Pronoun fail also preyed upon an additional minor character.
Back to the plot. The story wasn’t completely predictable, which was a big win for me. I was considering giving it four stars. Then, maybe it’s unfair to rate a book by including the preview, but when said preview was entitled “The Marquess and the Wallflower,” and the contents was for “A Spinster to Reform a Duke,” the overpowering sloppiness of the writing and nonexistent proofreading crossed a line.
I was unable to finish this book, though I got over halfway. My main issue was the characters.
Although for the most part, I enjoyed the female lead's chapters, she often came off as much younger in maturity. I felt like I was reading a 16 year old's thoughts, not a 20-something year old woman who is described as mature and independent. For example, the h views herself as extremely whimsical by going out for a walk reading a book during a rainstorm. I view it as really dumb/immature.
But the hardest chapters to get through were the male lead's. To be fair, I think these chapters may be realistic representations of the thought processes of someone with extremely low self-esteem whose gone through trauma. But the chapters are absolutely exhausting to read.
Every other paragraph in these chapters is a variation of "Someone smiled at me? I don't deserve that. They must be mocking me. I'm hideous, woe is me! I better yell at them to remind them I'm a monster deserving of nothing!" Seriously, you will read pages upon pages of variations of that theme over ever little thing in his life. Someone isn't rude to him? Time for a few paragraphs on why he's a monster. Someone looks in his general direction? Time for the monster song and dance again.
I know I'm reading from a modern lens, but all I could think is this man is not ready for a relationship. He needs intense therapy and it's annoying for the love interest to be given that role as that is actually a really unhealthy relationship.
Poor Amy. To loose her loving husband in such a terrible way, then the blow to learn her husband hadn't provided for her in his will so she was basically penniless. Before she could recover she realized she was pregnant so a heavier responsibility was coming and her mind snapped. The diary gives you the impression Oliver killed his brother while drunk. That Oliver contemplated suicide and when his brother tried to stop him was killed instead by accident. In truth Oliver was heedless with his gun because he was drunk but was nowhere near gun or brother when the gun fired killing his brother. Oliver might refer to himself as a murderer but the court acquitted him and deemed it an accident. Neither Oliver nor Amy wanted to marry but each did for their own reason. Ironically it was their mutual love of dogs that brought them together.
The power of love. Rachel and Oliver are really two lost souls both scarred by life but now being joined in marriage. This book had such a touch of sadness to it yet there is a bit happiness too. I liked Percy he was a super good character I really enjoyed what he did at the end of the book it was rather tricky. It is very clear that Oliver married into the right family. There is a bit a drama from another at the end and over all in was heartwarming but sad ending but that is how the whole book was sad and happy interwoven. It is a very good book.
Four stars, Oliver the Duke had serious baggage.. One being scarred from serving in the army.. Second he carry secrets, causing him to live a life alone.. Known as the beast.. Force to marry for financial reasons, Rachel had to to get answers.. In order to free him from the demons, she solve the mystery and she unlocked his heart.
Rachel is a beauty but is left at the alter and so she is to marry Oliver a duke with a scarred face and has isolated himself. They marry and love grows The characters are courageous and kind The extended epilogue completes the story with a happy ending Heartwarming read
What an amazingly wonderful story Tiffany has written for us. I enjoy reading her stories so much that I highly recommend all of them. I really liked this one and can't recommend it enough.
Tiffany Baton knows how to write wholesome stories of times gone by. This tale is no exception. Rachel and Oliver's story is full of what makes Regency fiction so fine!
Truly one of Mrs. Baton’s better works! I’ve read several of the Beauty and the Beast, but this one comes at it from a very different angle! Both are carrying scars, not all of them on the outside! Enjoyable read.
It was a nice sweet clean story between the beauty and the beastly duke. Enjoyed there progressive relationship, reading about the growing love and understanding between them. The butler was good. The crazy sister in law always fun. And then the happy ending!!
I read this book in one sitting. The heroine is very patient and loving with the beastly Duke. This is a clean romance with a great storyline. I loved this book. Well done Tiffany!
Atruly lovely love story! A story with twists and turns, some stops and some about faces but every bit of intrigue and need to read on. Touching on scarcely spoken topics but done so well.
This is one sweet read. Tiffany you did a magnificent job on this one. You created a story that was woven together with love. It was a joy to read from the start. Kept up the good work.
The leading lady was smarter than many in these books are. She understood the motivation beneath her husbands actions better than he did. Their courtship did not drag on painfully as too often happens in these novels. Overall, it was a great book and enjoyable.
I liked the story. Some places I found it difficult to follow. There were a few minor editing issues and some general continuity problems that should really be addressed. Could be much better.
This story has many emotions and is a story of guilt but love for his brother. As he comes to terms with his brother's untimely death it makes the reader wonder if there is something else going on with his sister in law.
An excellent easy to read story, well written, with wonderful characters and attention to detail. A romances full of unexpected turns and twist or two with a happily ever after.
What a great story, I am so happy that I chose this book . I enjoyed a great love story with interesting characters, story just ended before I was ready for it to.
I loved this book. Hated to have it end. Great plot and twists along the way. Very enjoyable to see the growing respect snd love between the Duke and Duchess.
