Roan and Dylan's life has changed since harboring a runaway infected, and weathering Roan's notoriety from the Profeta case. Still, it's not all bad news – a mid tier celebrity wants to hire Roan for an unusual case. Only it takes a dark turn, and while trying to deal with it, Roan also has to deal with a medical issue. It falls to Roan's family – including reckless Holden and imposing teddy bear Grey – to figure things out, and find a killer before he kills again.

Back with the latest of Roan's adventure... well, Roan and Co. since Roan is hospitalized (again) in this book, so Dylan is getting reinforcement from Holden (who comes to B.C. with Chai and Dee) to help with Roan's current cases. As well as Grey, the asexual hockey player who is also, basically, a tame grizzly bear, who comes to give help in anyway he can.

Roan's cases involves a woman looking for her biological father, and a TV series actor looking for his latest hook-up (who turns up dead). The latter if the one Holden takes over when he arrives in Vancouver. And Holden, being Holden, takes a dangerous way to close the case. Luckily Holden has a hidden bodyguard to save him in time of needs.

And there's further update on Maya, the Asian teenager who now lives with Roan and Dylan. Maya seems to start questioning her identity, as well as taking this new "life" with the gang, a lifestyle that is so far away from the life she lives before with her religious parents.

We are being reminded that Roan cannot live forever with his virus and aneurysms... but as long as he still can, as a reader, I will be there for sure.

Few bookish things make me happier than spending time with my book boyfriend, and this latest book in the Infected series was no exception. This is a much gentler story than what we’ve been used to but, quite frankly, I was here for it. The mysteries take a back seat and are resolved rather mundanely because the whole purpose of this book is simply getting to spend time with Roan and Dylan, along with their new ward and some of their assorted friends. This is a softer and slightly more fragile Roan than we’ve been used to, but he’s also more open about his love for Dylan and their new “niece”. So while the action is dialled down, the emotions are dialled up. Like I said, I’m here for it, and for every moment we have with Roan. I just hope we get lots more time to spend with him.

This one is for fans of Roan, who love watching him move through the world and interact with Dylan and the rest. The mysteries play a bit of a second fiddle, solved more easily than they would be if they were an intended focus, with a bit of "Roan is just that good" handwaving. The book works mainly as a vehicle to let Roan, Dylan, their foster kid and their friends including Holden and Grey, play out their mutual affection, their banter, their quirks and strengths. There's not a lot new here, although Maya adds variety and interest. It's fun to watch Roan trying to act as a mentor, especially since he's battling his tendency to fatalism and black humor and trying to be more upbeat for her. Those who love Roan will enjoy more time with him.

Reading this series always feels like hanging out with old friends. If you're still reading this series then you know what i mean. They always make me a bit melancholy though. I love Roan so much and it's so hard to watch him suffer. Of course Dylan is here but we also get to see quite a bit of Holden (my f-d up love), Chai, Dee and Grey. Also, Scott and Dropkick via telephone. And Tank.....well, being Tank. There are two cases in this one but they aren't as action packed as usual. They take the back seat to the relationships.

If you've never read this series I highly recommend it. You need to read them in order. It's a heavy series though and it addresses chronic illness, depression etc. And you'll cry. A lot in some books. It's all worth it though for this crazy band of misfits who will steal your heart. (it's not a romance per se. the main character is married through most of the series. there is a beautiful love story going throughout it though)

I still adore this series. I appreciate it more with every book. Roan is a complex character with some amazing friends and family. His story is that of a strong individual with an incurable illness.

This book showcases the impact Roan's illness has on his emotional health and how it affects people around him. I can relate to Roan's story on a multitude of levels, and I appreciate how well his story is told.

One of Roan's cases causes him to cross paths with law enforcement again. I struggled a bit with the negativity directed towards law enforcement. Roan was a police officer. He knows how the system works. I want to see him be the superhero who finds a way to change the system. He has had a positive impact on some members of law enforcement, but part of me really wants to see more.

I also want to see Holden get a swift kick in the back end. Holden and Scott both make an appearance in this story, which had me thinking about Holden's future. He deserves a happy life, but he refuses to give it a chance. Aargh.

Sigh. I will keep reading as long as Andrea Speed keeps writing because I am as addicted to this series as I am to superhero comics, although I do seem to prefer the antihero type of characters...
