2,5 ☆ I have so many thoughts about this book.
I don’t even know where to start my rant… Because this feels more like a rant than a review.
It’s easier to complain about how the side characters were treated so I’ll start with that.
You can tell this book has been written by a straight person and this is not a compliment in case I needed to clear that up.
I hated how Rayne’s character was treated. I really feel like he was only gay so people wouldn’t ship him with Emersyn. He treated her like crap before coming out and he never made up for that. By the time he started to be nice again he was no longer an important character and added absolutely nothing to the plot. He got with Jude and suddenly became forgotten. Not cool. Not adding this book to my achillean shelf because what the hell.
You know who literally added nothing to the plot? Tate (I think that was their name). The only non binary character is literally mentioned 2 times and never opens their mouth so I don’t understand the point of writing it. If you wanna include any kind of representation do it well or don’t do it.
The wlw representation? Absolutely horrible. The fetishization and minimization of wlw relationships is wild to me. I am sick of reading about men wanting to see women kissing and not consider it cheating. It’s disgusting and creepy. No queer woman would ever feel safe around any of these men. At this point, Emersyn and Luella should’ve gotten together honestly, but like for real, not in a “lesbian adventure” joke way (yes that kind of joke was made).
I hated that Emersyn was sapphic but only kissed a girl for the male gaze. I seriously hate how sapphics are seen in this book and it pains me. Some sapphic characters also get introduced, but again they add nothing to the story.
I vaguely remember canonically bisexual characters, but they add nothing to the plot and they’re too chaotically written…
The queer representation is disappointing in general. There’s too much queerbaiting. I’m being too generous by giving this thing 2,5 stars.
I can’t talk on much the black representation, because I’m not black so I wouldn’t know, but I feel like it was better than the ones I already mentioned. You can’t know August’s or Rayne’s thoughts as this is written in Emmy’s pov, but I think that’s better considering how well representation is managed in this book… Could’ve mentioned it’s harder to get help because being neurodivergent and black isn’t something the system loves, tho.
Anyways, not everything in this book sucks. The mental health representation was ok. I related a lot to August, he’s so personal to me. I also understood Emmy’s ADHD and disordered eating habits. I don’t think I have an issue on how any of these things were treated. They were fine.
I’ll finish this by saying that August & Emmy were obviously toxic and messy. August was unstable so the last chapter made complete sense. The epilogue healed me, partly, but I’ll think about them for a very long time. Am I too dramatic if I say they’re my new Roman Empire?
The mark they have left in me is indelible *Wednesday reference*.
I know I should hate them, sometimes I do, a lot. But even if I do I’ll still read their next book and y’all can’t blame me for wanting to see August stable.
