Susan Clinton was falling in love with Jeff Stoner, but her rival held the advantage. Beautiful, glamorous, Patricia was from the same wealthy background as Jeff and she already had his ring. Though the friendly young lawyer-turned-detective was too apt to drop in on Susan, it was only to talk about Patricia.
In their romantic designs for Jeff’s future, neither Susan nor Patricia had anticipated the irresistible Ben Rodgers, who suddenly entered the picture and made some startling changes in both their plans.
Pluses and minuses here. The good? The old-timey department store setting is great and Sue-Ann actually works during the course of the book. Love me an old-timey department store! By the standards of the era (and I do realize that bar is set *low*) the dudes aren’t too terrible. And the last few chapters veer off into bonkers Batshit Crazytown, which was kind of fun.
And the bad? From mildly annoying, to boring, to offensive they are: Sue-Ann may as well have been named Mary Sue. The Patricia storyline was dull and pointless. We really didn’t need that much detail in getting rid of her to leave the way clear for Sue-Ann. Even my well-developed vintage glasses, though, struggled with this plot point — the baddies turn out to be Boo! Hiss!
Enjoyable, wholesome romance story. Small town girl goes to the big city and becomes the girl next door to a department store detective who gets her a job. Then things happen. This was fun and light.
